What's crazy is that this was directed by Terry Zwigoff, who burst onto the scene with a critically-acclaimed documentary that he directed called Crumb (about the life of counter-culture comic book artist Robert Crumb). He also directed the cult classic Ghost World, with Scarlett Johansson, Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi. He's a weird director to pin down, but both Crumb and Ghost World are absolute must-watches.
"I know that music, it was in True Lies" That's the Tango, so you would of heard it in Scent of a Woman. This movie is a Xmas eve tradition in our house. My wife and I watch it was I wrap the kids present and usually as I'm over the wrapping we get to "Santa" being shot in front of kids and it brings a smile to my face.
One charm of the film is the side characters are well known actors from wholesome TV shows. Grandma was played by Cloris Leachman, famous from the Mary Tyler Moore show. The bar girl was played by Lauren Graham from the hit series 'The Gilmore Girls'. Then there's John Ritter from the 1970s sitcom 'Three's Company'.
Lauren Graham is miscast in my opinion. The part would have benefitted from a more interesting character actress. Do we really buy that she's into Billy Bob? I don't.
I like Terry Zwigoff's directing much more than you, and I think he makes the movie work just as much as Billy Bob does. I think in the hands of a lesser director there would be no character development regardless of how good Billy Bob Thornton is. I think a lot of directors would take the easy route and just emphasize the filth rather than the sadness in Willie. Also, the perspective shot with Marcus and Willie in the locker room after Willie beats up the bully (which you didn't include in this reaction video) is wonderful. If you want to give Zwigoff another shot, *Ghost World* is a great movie, and I also like *Art School Confidential* , although, not as much as *Ghost World* .
I remember seeing this for the first time many years ago; the line about Thatcher when he was talking about the quality of the safe at the end was an absolute cracker!
Welcome back and glad you're feeling well again! I almost pissed myself watching Bad Santa in theater way back in 2003. Thanks for sharing your reaction to this hilarious holiday classic! Cheers!
Billy Bob Thornton teamed up with the Coen Brothers again for the noir style black and white film The Man Who Wasn’t There. Co-starring, James Gandalfini and Scarlet Johansson. Also, please watch Sling Blade written directed starring Billy Bob Thornton. It is an absolute must watch.
The Bad News Bears theme song is playing when Billy Bob Thornton beats up the young kids and at the end when the little kid rides his bicycle away, which is funny because Billy Bob Thornton starred in a remake of the Bad News Bears, if you ever want to do reaction to the original 1976 film starring Walter Matthau, Tatum O'Neal and Jackie Earle Haley, it is definitely worth it.
It's an outrageous movie that's always threatening to become tiresome, but somehow, it works. And it's just so damn funny. The actors are completely committed. It's got a stacked cast with great faces and strong personalities. It keeps finding new ways to make you laugh at depravity.
Great reaction as always Shan. Have you seen the 1987 movie " the principal" with Jim Belushi and Louis Gossett jr ? A favoritte of mine in my childhood. Would be fun to see a reaction on that.
Gramma is the legendary Cloris Leachman if you didnt know her already. She was great in the movie Spanglish amongst many others. Jack Ritter was the store manager if you didn't know him. Check him and Billy Bob Thornton in the movie Sling Blade
2 movies I remember that starred Billy Bob...( but have never seen a reaction to...)....were 'Slingblade'....& 'One False Move' (....which I BELIEVE also starred Bill Paxton? )
I think the film implies the Grandma has dementia but the film doesn't spell it out for you to get a laugh from this. I love this movie, because sometimes adults need a R rated movie for them that is dark and funny and says to hell with political correctness.
Of course she is senile, all she says is "let me make you some sandwiches" and she doesn't bat an eye at Santa wearing a balaclava and him moving in to their house.
5:53 Unfortunately this was John Ritter's last movie role before he died of aortic dissection. He was a perfect fit for this role and delivered an amazing performance.
Billy Bob Thornton's great in Sling Blade. I believe he wrote it he was the main actor in it and he may have directed it? No one ever reacts to it and it's a wonderful movie.
Hi, love your reactions. Sorry if this seems kinda random, but there are three movies that you should be sure to watch the Theatrical Cut and not the Director's Cut: I Am Legend and The Butterfly Effect and Stephen King's 1408. No spoilers here, but the Director's Cuts for all 3 movies tested very poorly with audiences. So, powers-that-be had reshoots for all 3 movies and created extremely different endings. All 3 movies were released in the 2000s in 2-Disc DVD sets, with both versions. BUT, when the movies were initially released onto streaming services, only the Director's Cuts were available. Over the years, all 3 had the theatrical releases included on streaming services, but in my opinion, the damage was already done, because the 3 movies became known as having poor endings for the 1st decade of people who exclusively watched movies by streaming them. The 3 Theatrical Cuts are all very good movies, worth your reaction or viewing. I hope you found this information useful.
Lol so many funny moments in this classic. Me and some friends still reference the opening scenes. For other dark and vulgar comedy adventures at a mall, check out Jody Hill’s Observe and Report (2009). So good.
Y'know Shan...this has been my favourite Xmas movie. For us burnt out XGener's... Fuck, the World is hard to live in these days... All Hail to the people who actually show the shit like it is... The End...that's all I got... Thanks for the reaction...
You should watch Bad Bosses (just the first movie...much like the second movie of THIS movie...some movies just need to stand alone...and the fans would be happy...) next...it's just as funny!!
What makes this movie work is that it commits 100% to its premise. Willie is really, really bad. Even when he redeems himself (sort of), he does it in a bad way. Marcus is horrible. Gin is horrible. And the characters who weren't horrible were pathetic. Bob Chipeska was insecure and a bit dumb. The Kid (Thurman Merman) was really dumb, although not quite as dumb as he seemed at first. Grandma is non compos mentis. She just doesn't have much upstairs at all. What's unbelievable is that the kid was able to survive in the care of someone like that. In some ways, the least believable character was Sue. Yeah, she's attracted to Willie because she has a Santa fetish. But it's Lauren Graham, for God's sake. Lots of guys would gladly don a Santa suit to be with her. She wouldn't have to settle for someone like Willie. I love the use of music. Things like the Toreador Song from Carmen as Willie beats the crap out of the bully, and a Chopin Nocturne as the cops shoot Willie in the back. Hilarious. Willie was originally supposed to die, but Terry Zwigoff decided it was too dark, so he added the voice-over at the end. OK, now I'm off to make some sandwiches.
Always been a favourite and glad you watched this version. There are 3, the Theatrical version that noone seems to watch anymore, the Unrated version with extra r-rated stuff (this is the one you watched) and the Directors Cut which is the strangest version of all as it's much darker and has most of the comedy cut out.
Marcus says everything about Willie is ugly, but it was Marcus and his wife/girlfriend that committed murder. Willie is just a kinky drunk Santa. John Ritter's awkwardness really makes things so funny. He has this ability even in his TV show Three's Company.
Grandma was mentally gone. Indicated by the scene where the kids is bleeding after cutting his hand and grandma said I'll make you a sandwich, all she ever said or did was make sandwiches. That's why the judge had ”ms Santa” stay with the kid and grandma after Santa was shot.
I managed a cinema when this came out and we had to post signs everywhere stating that this movie was Rated R and in no way was appropriate for kids…..some parents still came and then requested refunds.😂
@@YourMothersMan The sequel sucks donkey balls because they bring the kid back as an adult and make him behave like he's still the kid. Ruined the whole movie. Guy.
Duhhhh... The Grandma had dimensia, or some other "brain ailment" that meant she wasn't "all there"... Essentially, she was "gone"... (Nuts if u wanna say so)... She had NO SAY in ANY matter... She was GONE ...
The Single most sweariest film i've ever seen is "Harlem Nights - 1989" Its Written directed and starred Eddie Murphy and had Richard Pryor ina major role.....the swear count is up there with Rambos Kill count :)
You keep calling the Grandma unbelievable. Unfortunately when you have people of that age dementia and Alzheimer's Disease can lead to people acting this bizarre. The Phoenix area (where this movie is set but not filmed), and especially Sun City/Sun City West, has a very large aged population so you see adds for Memory Care Assisted Living here quite often. It's really quite sad to think that we all have the risk of experiencing this tragedy as we age and the comedic way in which it was play here is, in my opinion, the most cringeworthy part of the movie.
As someone who likes Christmas and was born in the 60s many older people love a traditional Christmas this was not a traditional Christmas it was a comedy however those of us who like traditional Christmases hate new music for Christmas we want the old traditional songs so a new composition to fit this song would have been Christmas which would have been hated by all of us
I have a pitch-black sense of humour, but this film just depressed me. I hated it (except for Bernie Mac’s scenes). Afterwards I felt worse than I did after watching A Serbian Film.
The scenes with Bernie Mac and John Ritter together are classic.
RIP to both of them.

"Slingblade" is excellent in a bizarre way. I love the appearance of Col. Bruce Hampton in the jam sessions.
Billy Bob plays these type of roles well. Has a similar type of burned out character in Bad News Bears remake.
