Chat was absolutely right, that koi fish online was absolutely pre-painted and they just put some color over the top with white and did the pull to basically reveal what was painted underneath. I also noticed that they cut a portion of their squeegee out so that all the paint could pool in one spot off the edge instead of running the full length of the squeegee. But yeah that look definitely wasn't created by that pull.
It's super interesting to see their process actually, I wish E+K had seen some of their videos so they could tell that the pulls were more of an additive thing to the larger pieces than the thing that made the whole piece!! A lot of their work has underpainting or uses the squeegee as a base for more painting after which would probably have made E+K's pieces come out a little better and give them more control ^_^
I appreciate these uncut videos because they make DIY's so much more realistic. You get right into the process and see the time/effort that goes into things like this. I see you already addressed the paper concern lol. Katelyn is right though... you should let it sit for a minute. The top might dry a bit, but the bottom will soak into the paper/canvas, and there will be a layer of wet paint as long as you do it thick enough, and that is what you'll scrape off is the semi-set top layer and the ooey-gooey wet paint.

OK so... I really love the sheer effect of the fancy squeegee, it somehow looks more professional. I like the abstract art with the curves and the criss-cross lines, I think with just a little practise to get the curves smoother, that would look great. The cats are AWESOME nothing more needs to be said. And the koi technique seemed really complicated and unlikely to turn out right BUT I love the dolphin-duck-dude you ended up with. So I'd say 2.5 out of the 4 worked, and actually the double-dots pic kinda worked, I just didn't enjoy the concept as much as the others. But the most important thing of all isn't the finished product, it's the paint we squeegee along the way 🥰😻
Marbling paper is fun, you could try scratching soft pastels on water, spray paint on water, nail polish on water, shaving cream, inks, and more. Then turn it into artworks of what they kinda look like, pareidolia, or like how a coat hanger on a door looks like an octopus. It's entertaining 🤣
I know right usually katelyn comes up with an idea, Evan refuses it then when the initial idea doesn't work after several attempts he then says to do what katelyn said to do but makes it seam like it's his idea 😂
Putting a bunch of white paint under the fish’s fins (the armpits of the fish) might have kept the color paint from staining the paper to the left and right of the fish, preserving the shape of the fish. What a fun video!
EDIT: So I kept watching and I take it back. Thank you! 😂 I say this with all the love in the world… it makes my skin crawl that you tested to see the paint spread with different paint and a different squeegee each time. 😅 What if the shower squeegee would have spread the nice paint farther? You only tested it with the cheep paint. The shower squeegee spreads so nicely!
Cleaning the brush in the little cup puts the phrase, "cram the devil out of it" in my noggin. haha loving the very experimental experiments. It's very fun to watch y'all go through the process of acquiring knowledge of what works, and how you might use each to achieve various effects.
I wonder if this works the same way screen printing does. With the screen printing squeegee, a 45° angle is ideal when pulling the paint and they have the rubber bending portion like the metal shower one. No idea if the same thing would work with squeegee art but could be some tips!
Similar yeah! But there’s is a bit of difference with the material you’re putting it on. I don’t think they’re using actually canvas for this, at most maybe a canvas board, which is very different to most fabrics. I’m sure ink vs paint also changes how it works. Most of the people I’ve seen doing screen printing do use what looks like a bench squeegee though!!
Haven't finished watching yet so this might be brought up later in the video, but I wonder if the thickness of the tape would affect the result as well? A thicker tape border would raise the squeegee off of the surface by slightly more and allow more paint to be left behind as long as you don't press too hard when pulling. Like the squeegee rides on the tape instead of the surface of the paper. This also depends on whether you use a wide or narrow squeegee.

The thicker the material, the more pressue and angle you need because it does absorb ink different on paper, cadstock, T-SHIRTS ( depending on weight of fabic) and colors have their own sets of rules as well. metallics and glow in the darks 🤫😉

So glad to have a chill video to watch while I decompress after work! I really enjoy watching y'all explore and learn through the process of starting a new project. Also, definitely not me wanting to flip the canvases so they are pulling towards themselves instead of away/ to the side ':D
You have to learn the different ways to hold the squeegee. When you curve the pull (like the rainbow example), you hold the squeegee up and perpendicular to the paper, using just the edge of the squeegee blade. Practice squeegee pulls in the shower, on a window, or on a mirror; they make bathtub paint for kids that could be fun.
I've seen people hating on the squeegee artist and said that is not art and it doesn't require talent. Those people should try it for themselves and see if it was really that easy. That artist experimented on the medium and gained a great understanding of how the paint works. And they explored their options by painting first, then use the squeegee in a very calculated way. That's a really great artist there.
I think for the first test (two sided dots) part of the slight difference was the original had larger gaps between dots, which allows the paint to spread more.
Most of the acrylic paint vids I have watched use a wet black or white undercoat, the colored paints flow a lot better that way, and most of them mix the expensive paint with other things like pouring mediums or elmer's glue mixed with water to help them flow better.
I need to find time to watch the whole stream as I'm so curious as what you did differently than I did a couple of weeks ago to see where there is room to improve 😊❤ Always love watching the whole process as you learn way more that way ❤
I love how yall experiment. I think my mom and i, and maybe my roommate, would love to try this. Now I know what to get and use lol we're all crafty women in my house lol
Using a paper towel also works excellent! Spray bottom of paper towel with water and gently lay onot the wet edge onto the paint while holding opposite end, gently drag it across the canvass in one continued pull.
Experimenting with different colors, angles, and directions ( puposeful) lol .. please do more beause this really IS a art teqnique that a lot of people think is simle.
I think you are supposed to swipe the colors first then draw the fish using the natural shape of the paint. Like with a Bonsai tree, you visualize the fish inside of the streaks of paint and draw the outlines so they pop.
I would definitely watch more of these in the future. Thought on the koi. If you do all the details and outlines first, it may show as an outline without being such an obvious outline.
The first hour and a half was kind of a bummer with Katelyn just wanting to START and Evan not letting them move forward. Art is supposed to be fun!!! I know you two are trying to create nice end results, but I'm sure most of us would enjoy seeing you guys just create and experiment. We needed Chaos Evan on this one.
I'll be honest, I fully expected the koi to turn out as one giant grey-brown smudge when Evan didn't just paint the spots and let them dry beforehand. I'm pleasantly surprised that the outcome, though duckish, turned out a decent koi
Me sees the cheap squeegee: *war flashbacks to my first job as a donut decorater* looks very similar to the ones we used there if not the exact same (they were used to scrape the frosting buckets)
Looking at the first squeegee art i half wonder if the dots were too full and close together bc the colours are crowding together in some areas. Also does seem like the referenced arti s using nice paper instead of canvas. Those dots had a graphic sorta hippy rainbow effect to em which made it have those cool vibes.
The squeegees you see 90% off the artists using are from the Dollar Tree and they seem to work the best...I would recommend trying this again with that squeegee!!
When Evan was filling in his koi with white, y’all are talking about how much the paint costs and how much is wasted when you use the squeegee method. I have a suggestion!! Take all the paint you scrape off, in this case it was just black, white, grey, orange. Mix up the excess paint and save it!!! This would likely make a dusty peach color, certainly one you’d happily use later on :). For other squeegee projects that have more colors, generally the excess paint will be mixed up enough that it would be impossible to separate the colors, BUT if you just separate them roughly by cool and warm, or just enough that you’re not mixing a whole rainbow to get brown, you’re likely to end up with some interesting colors to save, or to use on the next project. Or, the easiest way would just be to get in the habit of scraping up and mixing all the excess paint and if you like the color, save it. If not, don’t.
A lot of paper, even fancy art paper will get wavy when you apply wet mediums, and that's why you're supposed to tape down the edges and keep it taped until it's dry [maybe tape to boards you can move around?]. Back in high school in the 90s we did something called paper stretching, where you'd take a piece of thicker smaller paper and carefully stretch out the fibers, by pulling and taping it, to make a bigger piece of paper for art. IDK what the exact application of that is in real life in any instance where you could just buy larger paper, but they sure showed us how. The rule was that if a paper was wet at all it should be taped down until it isn't. Oh! also the other difference between hot and cold press paper is that cold press is rougher but it's more absorbent, so the texture with wet mediums might not make as much of a difference, but it will take in more pigment. With hard mediums like pens and pencils you want hot press so that the implement doesn't scratch up the paper fibers, and so the pigment just sits on top. Cold press might actually work better for this? I haven't done it myself at all, but in theory it should. Duck mermaid [also I see 2 ducks]
Lol, I was about to write a comment about hot and cold pressed watercolor paper when I got to the part where chat got to you about it 😝 Instant feedback beats replay crew, lol
Really late to this, but as for the water color paper texture thing, you have two types. Hot press and cold press. If you want a smooth water color paper, go for hot press. Cold press is the one that has a lot more texture to it. I know you can buy it in large sheets roughly the side of the average poster, and they likely bind it into sketchbooks too. I recommend checking a hobby lobby if you want any, that way you can check to see if it has the texture you want.
I think the squeegee Sharece uses is somewhere in between the fancy one and the cheep one. I have one that looks the same and it's thinner and a bit more rigid than the metal one, as well as lighter if that makes a difference.
If you wanted to do this project more in your down time, prep a canvas for flow acrylic and scoop all the excess swipe paint onto that canvas, and then just tip it around and see how it comes out. At least it's less of a waste to make extra paint into bad art than to just trash it.
Well, this was an interesting experiment. Was sorta bummed you didn't try on the wood in the end but everything else was still fun. The Cats won for me in the end. They were so cute and derpy, lol. 😍👍 The Koi/Duck actually turned out okay. 😉 I think the problem was not just the amount of pressure on the squeegee but also the amount of twist. Didn't get the turning radius quite right. 😅 Also, you possibly needed to start with the black color, then the orange and grey and let those soak in completely but not fully dry before adding the white on top. Still, you managed to save it in the end so bravo! 👏😁 It was a fun learning experience all around. 😊👍
I have the same blue & white squeegee that is being used in your 1st reference video. Found it at the Dollar Tree. They might have it on their website.
You can get smooth non-textured watercolor paper. One is cold press one is hot press..... One textured one smooth. Because what i use for my watercolors is completely non-textured and as smooth as marker paper.
Not sure if anyone has said this but that blue and white squeegee in the videos looks like the one from the dollar tree or from walmart. I've never done squeegee art but what I have seen online I feel like the paint is thicker not on the thinner side though. Like in the cat one you can see the paint stays 3-D and doesn't spread on its own.
I definitely think the koi was painted first and let dry - at least the first half. I’ve seen where the fish is painted and the fins squeegeed I.e. Siamese fighting fish.
1:18:06 it is same day delivery but they're probably other drivers and like Walmart you have to have a certain time that's needed. So yes it same day if you asked by a certain time
Hot-press watercolor paper is smooth. Cold-pressed watercolor paper has the grainy texture you know. Said she, days too late to help E&K but maybe it can help someone else.
Painting with hot sauce is more viable than it seems. That stuff stains things. Perhaps not great for water coloring paper, but it sure leaves long-lasting artistic impressions on my shirts and patio concrete. There's something there with 'natural' stains for a project. Beets, carrots, hot sauce, rust, charcoal, etc.

Idk why this video was recommended to me but i couldn’t be happier!
Y’all are a DELIGHT I tell you!
Sitting here screaming in my head “you need watercolor paper!!!” Lol this is definitely going to help people though.
The squeegees you see 90% off the artists using are from the Dollar Tree and they seem to work the best...I would recommend trying this again with that squeegee!!
I'm pretty sure the squeegee used in the reference videos is the shower squeegee from the Dollar Store. I havw that same one for my car
Evan's piece at 24th minute is very impressionist, I like it 😂
A lot of paper, even fancy art paper will get wavy when you apply wet mediums, and that's why you're supposed to tape down the edges and keep it taped until it's dry [maybe tape to boards you can move around?].
Jazza's art is a good reference if you want a diy like this
Use Acrylic paint on plastic and do a design and you can put peel it off and use it as a cling
Omggg another 2 hour videoooo yeyyyy
About to watch this entire vid, wish me luck on not falling asleep lol
If you want to try this again, or something similar, tape down all four sides to prevent warping and to make a nice border. 😊
I actually like the first piece, the more transparent side reminds me of water reflections
I dub the kitties Meowris, Meowry, and Purrcival 😸😻
I think the squeegee Sharece uses is somewhere in between the fancy one and the cheep one. I have one that looks the same and it's thinner and a bit more rigid than the metal one, as well as lighter if that makes a difference.
If you wanted to do this project more in your down time, prep a canvas for flow acrylic and scoop all the excess swipe paint onto that canvas, and then just tip it around and see how it comes out. At least it's less of a waste to make extra paint into bad art than to just trash it.
Those cats would be an awesome sticker series!!
Add holiday hats or costumes or lights…
OMG! the first test looks like cartman from southpark! At 3:20 😂
Its a mermaid duck 😁 it's the happiest lil duck I've ever seen lol
Evan blatantly ignoring Katelyn to clean something😂 “nope I’m gonna do this”
Love the fails tbh I feel like with art being so subjective the learning process of a technique in itself could be considered art.
I love the koi duck and the cats 🥰
Well, this was an interesting experiment. Was sorta bummed you didn't try on the wood in the end but everything else was still fun. The Cats won for me in the end. They were so cute and derpy, lol. 😍👍
The Koi/Duck actually turned out okay. 👏😁
It was a fun learning experience all around.
Excellent art guys 10/10 duck!
Cold pressed vs hot pressed watercolor paper is more textured vs less textured respectively
This idea is neat. I would try mixed media paper.
Not me over here screaming DON'T PUSH SO HARD!!!!😅😅 so frustrating to not b able to talk to our creators lol
Just store the darn paint bottles upside down!
I actually loved the look of the test at 22:08/22:50
