This song is their life story. Akmu is a brother sister duo. 4 of us is their family. They are talking about the debt collectors that kept coming to their house (dinosaur). They try to be brave and stand up to them. Dinosaur also refers a figure that would stop the debt collectors. If you don't know, debt collectors are exactly what it sounds like. People who collect debt, however the difference is that they are like mobs. They came to houses, trash everything, threaten and intimidate just so they could collect their money Fun fact: The brother is tye songwriter amd producer of most if not all of their songs. Although AKMU's "Dinosaur" may look like a cute and lighthearted song, it actually has a pretty heavy and deep story and message. AKMU is really good at telling stories with their music in a fun and quirky way that makes them extremely fun to watch and listen to, but when you look deeper, you will discover their songs often have a much bigger meaning or message. AKMU write and compose all their own music. The older brother, Lee Chanhyuk, is the songwriter and composer, who you will often see and hear play the guitar in their songs, and his sister, Lee Suhyun, is the one who is the main vocal. All their songs are inspired by real life experiences and are almost all 100% created by them. That's why, if you get to know AKMU, you will discover their sound and style really is unique because they are different than the typical Kpop artists. (I kind of think of their music style as folk-pop.) Growing up Suhyun's and Chanhyuk's family was really poor and they were even homeless for a short time. (Their parents were missionaries and they lived in Mongolia for several years.) "Dinosaur" is based on their childhood and it's about how they have learned to overcome the pain and hardship of the things they went through growing up. The song is inspired by the nightmares Chanhyuk used to have as a child, which included dinosaurs. The "dinosaurs" represent the real debt collectors, who they were constantly afraid of, who would threaten them by smashing their things and destroying their home while demanding payment, etc. However, after discovering the "Loch Ness Monster" and realizing that those "dinosaurs" aren't as scary as they seem, they are able to conquer their fear and we see them living a more carefree life. When we see them scream at the world it is supposed to show how they are now taking control of the situation and they are no longer going to live in fear. AKMU got their start on season 2 of the Korean singing competition program Kpop Star, which is a little like American Idol for kids who want to become Kpop trainees. The founder of YG Entertainment, the founder of JYP Entertainment and highly respected solo artist BoA from SM Entertainment were the judges on the show. Even as teenagers AKMU impressed everyone with their original songs and remix Kpop covers, eventually winning on Kpop Star and signing with YG Entertainment. Suhyun was only about 14 and Chanhyuk was 16 at the time. They debuted in 2014, so they have been in the industry for almost 10 years now and they are still only in their mid-20s. Now as famous singer/songwriters, they are supporting their family. After growing up poor, they no longer have to worry about money. Not only are they making money as Kpop idols, but as the one that writes almost all their songs, Chanhyuk also makes money from their song royalties. Plus, he writes and composes songs for other artists. If you like Suhyun's voice, if you haven't yet, you should check out some of her live performances on the Korean reality show Sea of Hope and another Korean TV program called Begin Again. Sea of Hope, which aired in 2021, was a show -- that also includes Onew, the leader of SHINee, and several other well-known Kpop artists, actors and comedians -- that teamed up to run an outdoor beach bar. And because the cast of the show are all outstanding singers, they do live acoustic performances of songs for the entertainment at the bar. Some of the songs are songs they have rehearsed together earlier in the day, others are songs that the customers/audience request on the spot and some are just songs the cast decide to sing spur of the moment. The cast of the show also have the job of being waiters and bartenders, who serve drinks and bring the audience food. The cast comes up with the menu and cooks the food on the show as well. The TV show that Suhyun participated in for 3 years prior to Sea of Hope was Begin Again, which featured singer/songwriter Kpop artists who teamed up to form a group and they spent several weeks busking all over Europe. In Begin Again, not only does the group sing the songs live, but several of the members are also musicians, so they perform the music live as well. In Begin Again you will see Suhyun perform with Henry -- who is considered a music genius that can play almost any instrument, and is known for his songwriting/composing and producing skills -- from SM's legendary group Super Junior, and several other famous Kpop solo musicians and singers as members of a group called The Family Band. This group was so popular that The Family Band actually did 2 seasons of the show. And the best part is, they busked on the streets all across Ireland, England, Switzerland, Portugal and Hungary, etc., so the people they performed for don't speak Korean, but they always fall in love with The Family Band's performances. And Suhyun and Henry also participated in a third season when they traveled around Korea to perform with some of their Family Band members, as well as other well-known Kpop musicians and artists. This show showcases real life busking performances with some of the best musicians and singers in the Kpop industry.
I've alway thought the Dinosaur is kind of a general metaphor for all the negative things one sees in childhood that make you afraid even tho you don't really understand them. Their family wasn't good financially, and so they had to move around and even leave Korea for a while, they didn't go to school while abroad if I'm remembering correctly, and I'm pretty sure they were bullied as well. I connect to this song through my family's own struggles and things my mom couldn't explain to me that made me uneasy (like why I shouldn't talk to our landlord or why I had to change schools again or why she couldn't rent a costume for my school play like the other kids had and I'd have to make do with what was available at home already), I later found out about all the reasons and ofc looking back it doesn't sit well with me that she had to hide all that, but also I have to be thankful that she let me have some level of innocent ignorance and I enjoyed those years as much as I could.
Su Hyun has such a wonderful voice, it is clear and bright like crystal. She has lots of live solos and duets on other shows like "Begin Again" (a busking show) and "Sea of Hope". All worth checking out.
You're totally right! You totally caught on to 'dinosaur' being a metaphor for something. It's always fun to see people guess what the lyrics or mv could be saying. Enjoyed this reaction. I don't remember if AKMU outright confirmed what the dinosaur symbolized but there are a lot of clues within the lyrics. Basement villa is the literal translation for the Korean term for basement-level "houses" (often nothing more than a couple of rooms) that are rented for cheaper than normal housing and are socially stigmatized. So their family were likely sleeping in one room all together and the conditions were terrible judging by the mouse hole and all that. Other things people have already mentioned so I won't go into that. It's one of my favorite songs by them and released around the time they were rebranding from their more tongue-in-cheek/witty music.
Rami of Babymonster covered this song on Knowing Bros. she was amazing.....btw the song might be upbeat but it has a traumatic past for Akmu...I guess a lot of the commenters already mentioned what the Dinosaur represents..debt collectors who used to trash their house in order to instill fear. in case you were not aware before AKMU won Kpop star 2... AKMU’s family used to be very poor-poor enough that eventually they had to move to Mongolia for a while and leave South Korea where the cost of living is expensive.
Omg AKMU ❤️🩹🤧 Plz, react to more of them. Ydk, but they're too good. Their songs are soo soft & easy to listen 🥹 I think dinosaur is a metaphor in this. I can't properly remember but this song is based on their family situation, not completely sure 🥲 I listen to AKMU more after my EXO. Both of their discographies are top notch. Not a single skip song imo. I'm soo proud to found AKMU this year after that rewrite the stars cover. I love suhyun voice soo much. Wait till you hear their ballads 🫠
@@yoohootube12 omg yes... I love them soo much. I think there isn't a single song that I've skipped. I love this type of music more. Soo soft, catchy 🫠 Waiting for their new album. My first AKMU comeback 🤭

For the sheer beauty of Suhyun's voice - please watch/react to "Lee Suhyun - If I Leave" on BeginAgain... one my favourite ever songs /performances. (I saw her perform on BeginAgain live when they came to film in Italy a few years ago and I was on holiday - amazing coincidence!! Its on RUclips!!) There's also a great live clip of Suhyun, Rosé (from Blackpink) and Onew singing "If I Aint Got You"...
I'm glad we have AKMU herr as both of them deserves this acknowledgement from foreign fans but I'm just curious if BP & BBM are coming or not as this was not in the weekly schedule so was this and additional YG artist reaction? (if yes then KEEP THEM COMING 😂) Edit - ohh never mind I got my answer in the intro of the video 😂
The clues: they woke up with a scream, It scared her enough that she cried, her mom said to watch TV and calm down but the TV kept flickering, it broke down their window, it roared at her family, and in all the outdoor scenes the sky is gray with clouds. I believe Dinosaur is a metaphor for a violent storm that she had never experienced. She said I'll see you again and shout louder than you. What do you guys think?

i read somewhere that the dinosaur is supposed to represent debt collectors that came to their home when they were children
