In my opinion, supermaneuverability is the ability to have high AOA capabilities, good turn radius while still managing energy. It doesn't necessarily need to be a Cobra or flat spin. You can just stay on your enemy six no matter what they do.
That is actually the initial logic of supermaneuverability in Soviet doctrine, as a high AOA should have been enough to turn onto a bandit on 6 o'clock, lock and shoot the missile in a matter of seconds, and then returning to normal flight path. Basically surprise the enemy with a shock attack while being seemingly ultradefensive.
Great video, as always! Would you consider doing BVR and/or dogfight between the Gripen and F35? Gripen has lost out to the F35 in several deals lady years, so might be fun to see how they stack up against each other in DCS.
I would love a scenario where datalink capability is key. It's one of the selling points of the Gripen, but I can't see the advantage without stealth. Would love to learn about that.
In that last kill in the last round. Imagine you're just driving casually on the freeway and then BOOM, a Flanker just crashes and explodes right beside you. 😂😂😂
In my opinion i personally think that retaining energy is more important but if you give the right pilot a super maneuvourable plane they can be dangerous in dogfights
@@Editzify It's still stringently situational at best, gun fights aren't going to happen without getting 3rd partied or smoked by a wingman, or forcing your own wingman to have to help you out. The Flanker probably won't be using super maneuverability very often if at all in most instances.
Great video. It was amazing to see this. In general, many try to do such cool maneuvers on Flankers. But not everyone manages to use them correctly in dogfight. And after that, many say that the Cobra and other maneuvers are useless in combat. Actually it is not. Unfortunately or fortunately, only stubborn professionals can master these maneuvers and get their hands on what is essentially a big trump card in close combat. Personally, I have so far only sometimes and then by chance it turns out to win. But how beautiful it is!
Hey GS. Thanks for all the great videos! QUESTION: I noticed that when you use differential thrust, you always use the engine on the same side as the direction you are turning e.g., ussing right engine to yaw right, etc. WHY? Why not use the opposing engine to turn the opposite direction? Thanks!!
Hi man, soooo when that happens its either engine taking time to respond to input....OR I'm making a mistake in the input. it's always one of those 2 things. You're right if I want to throw the nose right I would be puttin in more left engine.
This is also correct, I may input the other engine in the middle of the turn to oppose the diff thrust I put in initially....sort of controlling diff thrust with more diff thrust.
Reminds me of the video GS did a while back - the dance of the sukhoi's, I think. Just beautiful watching these super-maneuverable aircraft twist and roll over each other.
"When you have the FCS off like that, you can whip the nose around and it doesn't necessarily have to be defensive maneuvers" *demonstrates by cobra into fox-4 building kill*
The thing is, I get into dog fights with people, oh you shouldn't fly f16 so slow... then I start thrashing them and it goes quiet. So I'm not sure energy is as important as people make it out to be. You can use a low energy state to draw an over confident pilot into a trap.
LOL I notice the Dubai skyline and Think.... "Yeah, there's enough wealth and excess that this could be an activity offered for wealthy tourists... totally! "
I always felt that supermaneuverability was better used in an offensive rather tthan defensive tactic, but then again having seen this video i realize the East Bloc might have indeed a point in keeping it available for their fighters when the opportunity arises, great video!

That guns kill in round 3 was probably the most brutal kill I have ever seen in DCS.
I could watch these supermaneuverability fights for hours and be entertained. Some of the turns and moves pulled are crazy.
