Thank you so much! I was nervous but hemmed my dress for a wedding yesterday & saved myself some money & a trip to the alterations lady
Your welcome 🤗🥳 I saw the pic on Instagram . The dress looked great!
I am so scared that I will mess up my dress but I really want to try!!!
taylor landry maybe make it a little longer then you want. That way if it doesn’t work perfectly you can cut the hem again & redo it or try it first on a thrift store garment that your not in love with ;) best of luck & happy sewing !
Sew Anastasia I am about to try!
Sew Anastasia I DID IT AND IT CAME OUT AWESOME!
Same :(
Never "try" on a good piece, always practice first.
As a 5'1 female, I think I need to hem just about everything in my closet 😂 thanks for this simple and informative video! 🙏
Same here! It’s going to feel great to have clothes that are the correct length now.
@@SewAnastasia absolutely!!
@@Valiantironlo
I'm only 5' and I feel that.
I’m 5’2”…. So I feel you
Thanks, this was helpful! Was a bit scared to hem my dress since I haven’t touched a sewing machine in 14 years, but I got it done and it was so easy and quick! Did it on my ancient Husqvarna Automatic from the 60s.
That is amazing!
Great instructional video! So detailed and not a lot of filler comments. Thank you - totally going to try this on my concert gown used for my choir.
excellent! Thank you for watching.
Anastasia, I searched "how to hem a curved edge" One hour later, I found this amazing channel. I'm 5 feet tall. Thank you! I've subscribed.
@@cfauria9171 I feel you. I hem everything!!!! Happy sewing 🧵
@@SewAnastasia 🙌
Hi ! As a untrained empiric sewer I always press the fold(s) of the hem with the iron first, pin as I go and then secure it by hand basting (large long stitiches, which can esaily be removed after machine or hand sewing). Would not have the confidence or skill to sew with all those pins attached, having to take care to remove them as I go while keeping my eyes on the needle at the same time!
Thanks for sharing! I am glad you have a method that works for you! Happy sewing!
This was an amazingly helpful tutorial! Thank you for showing how to do this hem with out a special foot. I feel very confident that I can hem my daughter’s prom dress now. Wish me luck! 🤞
I'm so glad you found the tutorial helpful! Good luck with hemming your daughter's prom dress!
Thank you for this!!! I have law school prom this weekend and my house flooded so I wanted to save some money on alterations! This 5 foot girlie is eternally grateful!
You are so welcome!
Thank you for showing where you sowed! Lots of these videos don’t show it they just say “now I’m gonna take it to the machine”
You're welcome!! 🩷
This video is a few years old but still is exactly spot on for how to hem a dress. Just what I needed!
Love this, thank you so much! Quick question. In your video you said find a similar measurement from the marked pins to make them the same and then mark to cut. But when I do that, the back of my skirt is shorter than the front. How would do the measurements for the back of the skirt (I have a bigger butt ) to make the skirt the same length all the way around?
Thanks , this really helped. AND right to the point of what i needed done. I've just shorten a long skirt. Really helpful. Thanks for posting!
Thank you! You saved my work christmas party dress and explained things so well and clearly.
Woohoo 🥳
This was super helpful. You helped me hem my first skirt and it turned out great. Thank you!!
You are so welcome! ❤️❤️❤️🧵
Thank you, I have to hem a dress and was so nervous to try it that I was about to find an alterations shop. My mom is there seamstress in our family so I've never needed to seek outside help with sewing. Unfortunately she's developed tremors and it's shaking so much that it's making sewing difficult for her. I just have to figure out that hem allowance that you talked about and get over the fear of cutting off the material! Wish me luck!
Kelly Clark your so very welcome!!! Good luck! You can do it!!
Helpful tool: - a straight-stitch presser foot. Available for almost all machines.
Thanks for this video! I was able to fix my dress for a performance, and it worked like a charm!
Awesome 👏 🥳 so happy to help :)
Ight I got it now I’m going to definitely stay on your page so you can help me more
Glad I found your channel--I appreciate the detail of your videos, and I love your positive energy! Thanks so much!
Best explanation ever. Thank you!
Idalis Roldan your welcome! 🎀
Can you do a video on how to turn a long skirt into a matching set with a mini skirt and crop top?
thats exactly what i want to do with my plaid skirt !!
I totally can!
I will try it this weekend! I’ve been planning to hem one of my dresses since I’m 5’3 and it’s very big on me. I’ve been very nervous though since right now all I know how to sew is to make a pillow. You video was easy to understand and I think I’ll be able to handle it! Here goes nothing! 🤞
You got this!!! If anything maybe cut one longer then you want it to practice & then cut it again at the correct length.
I've got you beat. I bought a pattern for a shift in order to learn how to sew. Followed the instructions religiously. Cut out the correct size except for one thing. I'm only 4'11". Now I get to learn how to alter a hem that I've already sewn. It was supposed to have 5 tucks in it, but first tuck reaches the floor. That's how off I am on the length.
Thank you so so much! I did my very first hem on my daughter's orchestra dress as I was watching your video. It was a success!!
Thank you! This was very helpful since my machine didn't come with a rolled hem presser foot.
Woohoo 🎉 I’m happy it helped 🎀
I'm exactly 5ft and I needed to see this, thankyou 😅😭
Very welcome! Thank you for watching. Now all your skirts and dresses can fit!
Best tutorial ever!!!! Thanks
Thank you! 🎀
This is so helpful I was able to hem my daughters costume
Glad I could help! Thank you for watching.
Please enable subtitles.
You can turn on CC on all of my videos.
omg i love how the foot on that machine has a gap 1/4 inch wide..... i need that. so clean
You totally should get one!
This was so clear! I'm gonna go and hem my dress, thank you so much
You're so welcome!
Brilliant! 👌🏼 I was able to do my daughter’s prom dress easily following your instructions 🤩 Thank you @sewanastasia!!
I am so happy to hear this!
Thank you, Anastasia! I’m
Shortening a dress into a shirt!
Awesome 👏 Thank you for watching :)
Never used a sewing machine a day in my life but finna try after this video lol
awesome!!! Thank you for watching.
I have a long, full, velvet dress I am trying to shorten a lot to make it come above knees. I am nervous about doing this. Not much experience at doing this at all. Is it possible to do it this way: make bottom of hem meet all way around pin to keep stable, measure from bottom up at center which is longest point and cut straight across to get rid of length and then hem to desired length or will that not make it even all the way around? HELP PLEASE AND THANK YOU.
um that ring is so CUTE
Thank you 😊
So, the dress I want to hem is kind of stretchy, does that change how I would do this? The current hem stretches as well.
I would use the stretch lightening bolt stitch or a zaig zag stitch for the stretch fabric.
Soooo helpful 🙏🙏🙏
I can't sew in a straight line lol
MRH oh no!! Try tape on your plate .
What does that mean? I have the same issue when sewing
You make it so easy. Could you please show how to shorten a satin pleated skirt ? I have several to make, I bought a machine, but never used one. There's no ham on my skirt the stitching is at the end, no idea how to do this. Thank you
Thank you! Awesome tutorial!
I got a long skirt for Christmas, but it would be perfect for my cosplay if it were a bit shorter. Thanks :>
Thanks. That was exactly the help I need.
Excellent to hear :)
If you can iron the hem before sewing, might it be easier?
I think it’s harder when it’s a small fold but that’s the great part about sewing, doing what works for you. Happy sewing 🧵
Nice to see you again, thanks.
Constance R Garcia totally!!!
What am I doing wrong? When I put my skirt under to see, the bottom thread with the bobbin is sticks out over to the right causing my sewing machine to jam upon the first few threads. You help me I don’t understand what I’m doing wrong. I’ve watched 1 million videos and I can’t figure out how to get the bottom thread to not be over to the right side at the beginning of sewing
It sounds like you do not have your machine threaded correctly. Make sure you are putting your bobbin thread in correctly.
If I don't have a sewing machine, what kind of hand stitch should I use for this?
its probably to late but bernadette banner has a video on hand sewing seams the could be useful :)
@@emilynidhuinn1614 Yes, I saw that video and it's very helpful!
What if I’ve already cut off the extra length but am pretty sure it’s not even. And the fabric is very stretchy - what do I do?
Yummy skirt material. Luv your big heart ring❤️❤️! Great tutorial.
Lois Casey thank you !!!
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you soo much!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you for watching.
Is there anything about this tutorial that I should change for working with a more slippery fabric, like rayon? I got some comfy dresses that are 95% rayon and I’m very not confident in my abilities 😬😬
I would make a very small rolled hem
I can’t quite figure out what to do about the pins being crooked. I can’t just measure and insert a pin, it just ends up crooked/misplaced.
Do I just free-cut and hope?
Then, the chalk… I don’t have any that is narrow, only the regular size stuff. Same issue, crooked or misplaced when I go to draw the lines.
I get practice helps or something but it seems a bit out of my control and I’m not sure how to keep that from ruining the skirt
Other than that, this video seems very helpful
Thank you for the clear instructions!!
Your very welcome. Happy sewing
Hello, can I use this technique for a pleated skirt ? Thank you !
Océane PEREIRA yes you can!
Gotta take up a robe and the sleeves this was very helpful thank you!
Wow this is amazing ❤ thank you and so helpful
I feel your pain I am 4' 9" and always have to hem all my clothes. Usually my mom helps me with it. This time I needed to hem a dress for a wedding but couldn't get together with my mom in time. 😊
Thanks for sharing!! So happy you where able to hem your dress.
You made it look so easy. I will have to try it. Lol. Thank you 😊
You can totally do this!!! 🎀 Happy sewing 🧵
thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Thank you! The skirt turn out amazing! Would it possible to do by hand with that kind of materiel?
Yes of course!
Thank you! That was really helpful!
I'm so glad! Happy sewing 🎀
Looks easy ima try this ❤😌cause its much needed!!
Time to make things fit better! Thank you for watching Sew Anastasia and happy sewing!
What allowances do you make for the back of the dress since the butt may make the back rise higher than the front?
It really depends on your shape. U can measure from the ground up to get an accurate even hem
Any tips on cutting the skirt if you want an unregular shape? I have a long skirt that I want to shorten in the front and just a bit in the back.
Yes! I have a video for creating the hi low hem. It’s in my upcycle vids!
Always a fan!
Hi. If the fabric was one that frays easily, would you zigzag near the cut edge before doing the two 1/4" folds?
Yes!
I'm confused. You didn't show the final product up close. The inner hem looks nice but I didn't get to see the outer side of it, so I'm not sure if itll look good.
The outside is just a stitch line close to the edge. Hope that helps
i'm 5'10 but i'm a mini skirt gal!! and i really i wanna do this but the skirt is corduroy and i'm scared of messing it up even more 😩
You can do it! jUt keep the hem allowance very small and it will work out.
Hey can u help me? I tried to hem my skirt, but as im folding the fabric its twisting and it become ugly...i will try making smaller ham as yours do you have advice for me
You need a smaller roll. Try 1/8 roll
Excellent tutorial.
I subscribed!!
Your very welcome. I’m happy it helped you & thank you for subscribing 💕💕💕
Grreat start, and getting into the businass right away! I need to know how to better find the right length while im wearing it, by myself.
When I’m wearing it I usually bring some pins over to the mirror & start picking lengths & pinning it up a few inches to see if I like it. Also u can buy something called chalk skirt hem marker & it squirts chalk on the skirt while you turn in a circle ... you choose the length. Check them out!
So I had to wash my fabric and dye it. The whole bottom is frayed. I’m hoping to save by trimming it and do a hem.
Helpful video but I had to turn the volume down so I didn’t hear you shouting!
Thank you for watching. Try CC
This is a great Video. I'm so afraid of cutting crooked, it will take some practice. Yikes
Just measure the heck out of it. Measure twice & cut once.
@@SewAnastasia How do you know if your ruler is straight??? skirts/dresses are not square, so I cannot even use a graphed mat.
With a twin needle and a zig zag stitch, should this method work on tight, stretch fabric?
How do you do it without getting lumps?
It needs to be a narrow hem. Like 1/8 or 1/4.
Can u make captions available?
They should be. Just click the Cc button.
what if you have a floor length skirt that you are trying to shorten to say, knee length or mid thigh length? does the same process apply?
Yes it is the same process!
@@SewAnastasia thank you!!
Love ur glasses
Love this video! So helpful!
Thank you! I have 4 dresses to hem.
Thank you!
Welcome!
thanks!
Very welcome 🤗 Thank you for watching
Hi please could you tell how to sew stretch material dresses on an ordinary sewing machine!? Do we need a special sewing machine for stretch materials.
Hi Anastaisa! will it work on all kinds of fabric? (my skirt is 100% polyester)
Yes it will work on all fabrics. If it’s knit you want to hem it differently.
Why do I have a leftover when hemming a circle dress? Is there a special way to sew circle dress compare to a pencil or straight dress? Thank you.
What do you mean by leftover? Yes hemming a circle skirt can be different from a pencil or straight skirt. Your hem allowance needs to be smaller on a circle skirt. 1/8 or 1/4 rolled or flipped hem. A straight skirt can have any amount flipped up into it but you should always cut off the extra if it’s beyond 2 inches so it doesn’t weight down your hem. Hope that helped. 🎀
@@SewAnastasia Thank you.
At what point do you iron? After it’s sewn? Thanks!
Also, if sewing a longer dress into baby doll length do you leave extra length around the butt? Thank uuu
I iron it flat at the end. You can leave it about 1/2 inch to 1 inch longer in the butt but it really depends on how bootylicious you are.
Ur voice is so cute 😭😭 also great tutorial it worked super well!!
Your welcome 🤗
I can do this!!!!!
yessss you can!
Has anyone done this? What is the stitch length? 2.0?
You can use any stitch length. It really depends on how thick your fabric is but 2mm is standard. Happy sewing. Thank you for watching.
As I fold twice to hem and pin the fabric doesn’t want to stay in place 😭 an open tube starts to form and the pins shift.
make your roll smaller and do not use pins. Just roll it as you sew. Thank you for watching Sew Anastasia & Happy Sewing!
Awesome
Do you know what I can do if I don’t have a sewing machine???
Does this work on a pleated skirt?
Yes!
If the material is rigid should I first iron the hem ?
Make sure your hem is flat with no wrinkles before you hem.... so yes
Wow
GRETCHEN PENN 🎀
Hi! Does this works to skirt with pleats???
Yes!
Can I use some fabric glue instead of sewing?
I mean you could but I do not recommend it.
What foot did you use ?
Just a regular foot
You are adorable! Can you also use a clothing marker instead of chalk? Thanks!
