I think there's also something to the way the audio of the older episodes were recorded that makes his deliveries seem better than they actually are. There's something about audio distorting when he screams into a crappy old mic that is just gold.
I think that he should keep the old glasses, simple background and close camera shot. I noticed immediately the positive difference. Then when he does special episodes like Monster Madness he should go back to his video store set. Just my thoughts.
As someone who’s been toying around with putting HD stuff onto VHS just for fun, aesthetic reasons, they could’ve gotten an authentic analog filter just by running an A/V to HDMI converter box (which James has said he has) from the system to the computer for video capture. The analog signal is really all you would need.
I've also toyed around with this stuff, pretty fun and pretty simple process. James could literally make this look like an old VHS archive of his gameplay footage as a kid
Nah, he should totally go back to like it's 2007. Why not? At some point we have to decide if things really used to be better or if it's nostalgia and actually do things the old way if it really was better instead of everything having to be new and different because it's current year.
Thank you for saying this. I feel like this is a really valid argument that people ignore these days. Yanno what else springs to mind? The abundance of new media returning to old IPs, like X-Men 97, where it is painful to me how oblivious they act to why the new animation trying to emulate the old just doesn't capture why that old look and feel and energy was so special and timeless.
This is the problem when people don't care about small details, over time little things change and then add up to big things and take away from the experience
YES you hit the nail right on the head about the look, I couldn't put my finger on what it was but each of the small details really made that Indiana Jones video feel a lot more authentic.
This latest episode of the nerd was really enjoyable and at the time my wife and I couldn't put our finger on it why it was so much better than other recent ones. Could be a compilation of things, set, character design, lines, editing. It all went very well for this one. The ending was also pretty funny and left it open if I remember to go into future episodes.
They could have just ran through the gameplay footage through a device with composite output and record that. That would have looked much better than the shaky filter.
I get James' desire to mix things up. Audiences are fickle and trends have very short lives. He also said he didn't want to bore himself. Like you said, he is not an actor (except in the literal sense) and probably needs the genuine real life experience in order to perform well (see his very poor performance while playing that obscure handheld).
Funny I basically commented the same thing you guys said under the AVGN video with my main complaint being the gameplay footage made me dizzy and almost gave me a seizure.
I legit thought they had reposted an old episode I hadn't seen until I scrolled down and saw the comments. I definitely think there is something about low production value that enhances comedy. It's why the crappy effects of old Monty Python sketches are so hilarious. He definitely shouldn't go back and keep literally replicating the old style, but he should definitely take some notes and bring back the spirit of the old crappyness. Like maybe give less of a shit about those lights stuck in the ceiling and find a way to play with more creative cinematography? It's definitely a part of the charm of the old stuff. Newer videos always feel sterile.
His obsession with the lights and way he records stuff has detracted so hard in the material, I couldn't care if it was 480p if the episode entertained me
I mean all james has to do is pass the footage that they're gonna use through an old DVD recorder. would only take like 20 minutes max to do and all you need is a DVD drive in your pc to author a DVD
He used to record in cramped spaces, so he was forced to be close to the camera. I think that makes it feel more like he's yelling at you about how shitty "this" game is, in person. The original episodes felt like we were part of it... because we technically were.
One of my favorite AVGN moments is in bible games 2, "It's time to flick the shit switch, turn up the diarrhea dial, its bible games on C...D....I." Great discussion of the vid, the new nerd look is just way off and the "humor" matches.
I actually think he should do the "standard def" gimmick from now on. I can't think of a strong reason not to. Nobody else is doing that. I think enough time has passed that it would be novel again.
Just anything with a heart and passion, and I feel like the modern trend is always exclusively "the next big thing" instead of what can I do with it. Look at how Disney and the like have already butchered the use of the Volume stage
I was hoping y’all would talk about this. It is a catch-22. All aspects of the old nerd are funnier and more aesthetically pleasing to watch but to just shoot in 480p and imitate himself from a decade ago from now on would just be sad so hard to say what’s better.
I love how these guys talk all this technical jargon but in their video they look like Mac from sunny, all sweaty with a simple light shinning on their face
The biggest thing that bothers me with the newer episodes it feels like he’s trying to hard with the script. I feel like he’s reading a homework assignment to his English class where the teacher told him to use more similes and metaphors to “enhance his writing.” The old videos feel more like someone just giving their thoughts or opinions more naturally. This is probably one of my favorite videos he’s put out in years.
Something changed in his acting and writing after he came back from Hollywood. Not sure if he had some sort of coaching there but whatever it was it slowly ruined the character's presentation, like, the Nerd used to be someone angry (hence ANGRY video game nerd). For a lot of time he was been of a a Wacky Videogame Nerd he acts like a kid who had too much suger.
This really does nail another problem on the head. I can't stand his pronunciation of even swear words now. There's something so forced and inauthentic about it, God I miss the first 5/6 seasons...
I am convinced the game capture issue here was a capture mistake. I had similar wavy footage when I captured Gameboy Player footage, and I couldn't do anything to fix it.
Nah, it was because they recorded the tv screen with his old minicam like they used to do, trying to recreate the vibe of that time, but those things age badly. Not to mention the morons bounce back and fowards between Mac and Windows, so there is also codec issues.
@KonEl-BlackZero Well I had the same issue when I tried to capture GameBoy player footage for a GBA game, and have been trying to find out what I did to fix it so 🤷♂️

3:06. He's not crazy about the glasses. People to notice that. Just check out the interviews with j Michael strazynski about "the real Ghostbusters" when they were being bullied by "Q 5", some brain trust that supposedly knew how to target and optimize kid viewership and engagement. Basically, classic case of, if it's not broke don't fix it. They come in and one of many changes they insisted on the show, a show that was already top viewed kids show in it's network demographic, was changing Janeens glasses from pointy to round saying, "they were less scary and dangerous". Keep in mind, I'm not defending the decisions they made to the show, but something as small as glasses does get pointed out and analyzed for how it fits a character.
Yeah and compare the glasses to let's say Batman cowl. Each actor of Batman has had their own distinct cowl and when their suit might have changed (like Keaton and Bale did) cowl stayed almost the same.
I liked the new episode too. I know James can't help the balding (I'm 40 and have a receding hairline as well), but man... it's been so distracting in the last few years. I hope he either just shaves it or wears a hat. I also agree with the glasses and backdrop, it hearkens back to the older style of the Nerd.
IVE BEEN SAYING THAT FOR YEARS! The black glasses are awful.. I have no idea why he changed them. The old glasses Are great because half the time theyre crooked and it makes his rants so much funnier. James has lost it.
Hi, I'm the idiot that posted the "is this the new format?" comment. I was a bit frustrated because I had just seen The Flash and came for your take on it only to find most of the video was just a retelling of it, but if I hadn't watched it it would've been pretty entertaining so I accept the blame is on me for watching that piece of trash in the first place. Please accept my apologies.
Why is the baldness so hard to digest? If we can move on from Connery transitioning from Bond to Henry Jones Sr., I would think we can swallow James and his receding hairline.

It's not nostalgia. There are fundamental technical differences between old and new Nerd episodes that make the old one superior.

Totally! Other than the camera and framing, I couldn't put my finger on why this episode worked better, but the look makes a huge difference.
I think more than the glasses and the balding, the short sleeves exposing the tattoo do the most damage
The tattoo is so annoying to look at, the least he could do is have that written into his character in a review on how he gets it
