Vanilla FFXI was definitely a trip. But the sense of camaraderie compared to XIV is what I miss the most. The sense of accomplishment hit a lot harder because the obstacles were pretty daunting in vanilla XI. Haven't played since CoP but from the bits I see of XI now it seems like they did away with a lot of what made it memorable, which is truly a shame.
I really regret not bringing this up. I had it in mind but felt it was piling up a lot in the Faf/Nid section and didn't know if FFXIV players would understand lol
Rose-tinted glasses but it was a trip in vanilla version. Unfortunately don't have the time to dedicate to it anymore so even if they kept it the same, I probably wouldn't play it because of time. But a small glimpse: boats/airships arrived on a real-time schedule, the possibility of death and XP loss was always present (minus towns OFC), you had to actually talk/socialize with people to make smooth progress post lv 10-11. Sounds bad when you read it but it was definitely one of the better MMO's I played back in the day as a young adult.
Funny note (commenting early in the vid) Any of us Windy natives had a more annoying trip to Jeuno than anyone from Sandy or Bastok. Starting from Windurst meant you had to reach Mhaura first, and then take a ferry. While Bastok and Sandy could just leg it the whole way through. And all transport vehicles in FFXI, were Real-World Time based. So if you made it to Mhaura but were unlucky, you'd make it *just* as the ferry was leaving and would literally have to wait actual time before you could continue your journey. It sucked. that's what made it *great*
I agree with this. It seemed like the game was out to get you. But man when you overcame obstacles, it felt so much better than it does when you complete a quest/objective in FFXIV. FFXIV, while having a great narrative (with some debatable bits), just feels a bit hollow when you are out questing. Just doesn't have the same sense of danger/urgency.
thanks for sharing. Your excitement has made me excited for the raid launch too! (here's hoping its more challenging than Myths of the Realm and does 11 Justice)
To make it truly do Justice for XI, it would have to be as hard as it was back in the early 2000s. You couldnt just pull everything in XI otherwise you would die due to how hard the enemies hit. Thats what i miss most about this game. The difficulty and community was actually nice enough to help people.
My FFXIV character still carries the name of my FFXI server, Titan. I hope that Maat is somehow involved with the raid, either as just another npc or possible boss fight.
I tried to create a character on the server with same name as FFXI but I think it was the wrong region so I was forced to use a different server. Midgardsormr server.
Great work, the wave of nostalgia I felt hearing about this raid tier but also the trailer and music hit so hard. Sharing this with friends who didn't get to play FFXI incase they want to learn more. Since XD explaining it to them has been hard lol.
Never played FFXI but I have experienced that Niddhog/Fafnir style of world boss in an other mmo. Same deal, best loot table at the time and the boss would spawn once a week on tuesdays at 3 am. Hardcore guilds would spawn camp (first one to right click on the boss as he spawned, not too different from winning an house in XIV before the new lottery system lol) and get the rewards every week while the entirety of the others players could not even dream about fighting the boss. The devs changed that because of a quickly growing dissatisfaction among the playerbase.
Thanks a lot for this. Although I played XI for years up to ToA, I never got into the endgame. I don't regret it with all the fun I had leveling and gearing (to level lol). I look forward to running this alliance raid multiple times a day for all the orchestral rolls.
Yes! I actually think they might have used the Ark Angels as reference for the Cardinal Virtues, I wanted to bring that up but I felt like it would have been way too much detail to actually prove.
I didn't play much FF past being stuck in the starter zones and not really getting into the system. But I did really get interested in certain things ever since Eureka was introduced. Back when people were freaking out AV was a boss in Baldesion I was like "Why are people going nuts about it?" XI has so many real world instances between people doing crazy stuff for things that it makes hearing stories about it feel like some grand epic. I'm really hoping they eventually bring in things from Abyssea. Getting to hear Melodies Errant in a boss fight in XIV, is gonna give me the same rush that hearing Onslaught in BA felt to me.
Played FFXI since 2004 when it was released over in the West and probably put in like 800+ days in-game playtime so I'm happy to see some love for it in FFXIV
Thank you for this! I'm a big FFXI fan ever since the days when it launched in North America, and have only just recently started out with XIV. Always great to see love for the incredible game that started it all.
Now's a good time to get into modern FF11 if you want to experience the story, especially since there's not much happening in 14. Just avoid Asura. It's mostly bots and gilsellers. go for the second or third most populated server. After I cleared Savage, I went back for the first time since 2015, and there's been a ton of QoL improvements to traveling and getting the main story quests done. The Rhapsodies of Vanadiel story also ties into the Iroha crossover event in 14, so you can better appreciate that when they inevitably bring it back in the next year or two.
I'm on Asura but I've never experienced the other servers. It just seemed like where everyone else I knew was playing at the time and kinda always stuck here post 75.
@@KaiyokoStar Bahamut is a good balance between population and gils ellers/bots. Like, on Asura you can't leave shout chat on because it's 24/7 bot spam and gil sellers/mercs I'm on Phoenix and the shout chat gets like 1-2 of those shouts per day.
You had best believe that - once I go into the raid series proper - I _will_ be throwing on my FFXI-inspired Monk glam for the entirety of the quest line. XD
Cool! Thanks for making this! When I heard the Vana'diel March in the trailer, it was like some time warp took me back to XI! But alas, I never reached endgame back then. So I'm looking forward to this now!
I played XI for 12 years from NA release. Being a single barracks dweller overseas in the military, I had ridiculous amounts of time to pour into it. As time went on though, I gained rank and responsibility, meaning less time to play. Then I started a family, so even less time. The unbelievably stingy nature of the RNG, mixed with the "F your personal life" amounts of grind, led me to finally putting it down after Raisenjima. I had already dipped a toe into FFXIV, but leaving XI pushed me to dive fully into it. The far less grindy nature pulled me in. I have and always will love FFXI. It was my first online gaming experience of any kind. The story was great, and the lore was heavy and robust. As much as I hated the dev team's idea of "balance" and their utter outright disrespect for the player's time, I still absolutely adored my time playing. I have always hoped and wished for CBU3/CS3 to add more of XI into XIV. There was alot of it in the early days (direct rips of armor and enemy models), but it lessened as more of the game was released and XIV became more of its own thing.
I played XI _on the PS2!_ In fact, I still have my old PS2 and it still has the HDD in it with XI installed even though I can't play it anymore. When I have some extra cash I will occasionally boot my account up. I love the job system and I love how I can just get lost exploring and how I might end up as a crushed splotch of Taru on ground because I forgot that mob over there has True Hearing.
Aw, bless your heart for making this video Kai. I hope FF14 people will fall in love with FF11 through the alliance raids like we all once were with the game. Gawd I miss the OST.
I played FFXI at the NA PS2 launch in 2004 to 2007. Then I started FFXIV in 2015 a few months before Heavenwards came out and I'm still playing it 9 years later, 3 times longer with FFXI. It was so brutal, punishing, and time consuming but yet I still loved it. FFXI is the first MMO I ever played when I was a teenager ❤
I loved the Myths of the Realm alliance raid series in EW. I hope this series will evoke the same for me even though I haven't played 11; I wish it won't just be nostalgia-fuel for the players who played 11.
I remember trying to play FF11 back in the day, and pretty much got trapped in Jeuno because that was when you *had* to party up just to kill basic mobs, you were at the level range where dying could cause de-leveling, and if you weren't the "correct" race and job combinations, you'd be left LFG literally all day long. I made the mistake of starting as a Mithra Red Mage, and the whole game just fell apart around me after reaching Jeuno. So yeah... unfortunately I *don't* have fond memories of that game, and I haven't touched it in over 20 years, so this raid series not only falls flat for me but I'm kinda soured on it in general.
Not saying it didn't happen, but I never heard of anyone being rejected from an EXP party in all the time I played FFXI due to being the wrong race for X job. RDM was one of those jobs that everyone wanted in EXP parties the second they got Refresh. Only maybe in an HNMLS would people get that picky. I was in a pretty picky HNMLS and we didn't really care about it beyond memeing, it really wasn't a real deciding factor. That sounds absolutely wild and someone just being a PoS especially for an EXP PT.
@@KaiyokoStar Maybe it was just the server I was on (honest to god can't remember which one it was, been a couple of decades), or maybe since this was shortly after the PS2 release that I was dealing with PS2 players that didn't know there was better etiquette about it compared to the more established PC players. I also tended to play later in the day (as I do now with FF14), so maybe folks were pickier because they had fewer hours to farm and didn't want any foul-ups whatsoever. I just know that at some point, I *had* to turn into a Thief and stay as one if I wanted to increase my odds of being picked up, but ultimately never made it far enough to unlock anything more than the starting jobs before I quit. I've heard the game plays radically different nowadays, but I was never sure if it was worth trying again while still being busy with FF14.
I was too focused on playing Armored Core 2: Another Age when FFXI came out. Teenage me had priorities beating The Hardest FromSoftware Boss until Last Raven introduced Ultimate Zinaida. So really I'm just doing this for the Raid Token.

@DuoMaxwell007 dark souls is only hard if you rush things, i had lvl 156 and fully upgraded gear before i faced gwyn and i could block his full combo without losing stamina so it was easy, but i died like 14 times to the hardest boss called NITO :D
I came back too (and I'm still playing) ffxi 2 years ago and it's still far funner than 14. I just started dawntrail today so I could beat it for these raids
FFXI was my first mmo, went to the gamestop to buy WoW 3 times and it was not available so on the 3rd time i just picked FFXI, never regretted that decision.
Played from 04 - 10 Went to XIV 1.0 Left when it was a dumpster fire and went back and forth between XI and 1.0 When they shut down it down to fix it, I went back to XI. Where ARR came, I left XI. lots of memories I wouldn't trade for anything.
I really like when you go back to the past yapping about final fantasy world in your streams, I really enjoy Kayapper hahah xD Love the video, I didn't know much besides what I read on the internet so this video was very useful, I even sent it to the members of my FC who, for the most part, don't know much about the FF's world overall. Obviously there's a variety of videos on youtube with FF lore, but hits different when is someone talking with passion, so I hope you maybe found a niche you can explore more! 💙
The game is still up and running, albeit only on PC, and you have to download the launcher from the official website, but it's still a good game and fully-complete. I'd recommend people give it a try, though they may not like the idea of paying a separate sub on top of their FFXIV, but it isn't much, which is good. But the game is definitely fun, and if you're into challenges, it's perfect, because even by today's standards, it gives you a taste of how tough MMO's were back then. FFXIV spoiled me and practically held my hand the whole time, whereas FFXI was hardcore and you had to actually figure things out XD Thank goodness they have a website with wiki's on it, and full guides. Still, there's no other game like it, and I'd recommend it, and it has a unique and interesting story.
I have mixed feelings. I did in fact play 11, but for a VERY short time. The game was absurdly, absurdly, absurdly grindy and punishing (at least back at launch, when I played.) I lasted until level 45 or so, so while there are bits and pieces I recognize.... most I don't. For the record, while the game was absurdly painful to die in, took forever to level in, was outrageously expensive (if you bought it) or poopsock-y (if you found it) to get gear in, and very slow and tough to get groups in.... I will say I still have some very fond memories. In particular, the fact that it was so punishing and merciless made exploring certain areas legitimately scary, because the monsters in them could absolutely take you out and it would HURT if they did. I will never forget deciding to do my racial gear quest, and it genuinely feeling like an adventure as I went all over and delved deep into undead-filled abandoned mines looking for treasure chests. Praying all the while my stealth wouldn't give out at just the wrong moment, and being super grateful when a handful of high-level adventurers took pity on me and pointed me in the right direction. That was some true emergent storytelling right there.
I was drawn to the HNM part almost like magnetism, and my god, we really lived like this. That was awful, and one of the biggest reasons why WoW took so many players like me. You could level solo, and top-end gear was between your party and the boss, not the party and every hostile party trying to MPK you. We had endgame communities like nuclear powers trying not to take the MPK genie out of the box, because once it started, it wasn't going back in.
I completely agree, this is one of the biggest problems. I don't think a lot of people are willing to pay $12.99 for subscription MMO from 2003. A lot of FFXI die hards are good with it, but trying to convince anyone who isn't already playing is gonna be hard. I really think they need to consider a discount or combined sub option with FFXIV to incentivize people, I'm gonna say something really scary to FF players but... similar to how the sub for WoW Classic works with Retail WoW.
Played it, still play it. ML20 PUP, and Just mastered THF. Enjoyed the hell out of it. Personally skeptical of this release... I don't want it to be butchered I guess. Hopefully they treat the game with respect.
They have free login campaigns like FFXIV does, and I'm pretty sure you get 30 days when you buy the game initially. So pending you canceled the sub before it reoccurred you'd be fine.
We don't know, there isn't enough information yet. They've implied that other FFs are not shards in the past, example FF13, FF15, FF16 collabs are the characters coming from that game/dimension. The shards just have similarities to other FFs. For example, Iroha from FFXI and part of the collab is still on Etheirys and never went back to Vana'diel. Most likely this is where we might be going or could always be FFXI's "representation" as a shard. We'll probably figure that out in 7.1 or a later patch.
FFXI could, possibly, very tenuously, be a hidden area on the Thirteenth. Reason being, the world of FFXI was more or less destroyed. Mayyyyyybe twice, but that's kind of confusing so lets start with the certain one- the universe of FFXI was consumed by the Cloud of Darkness. Vana'diel was protected by a barrier created by the mothercrystals, but bit by bit the Cloud started to encroach, up until the matter was resolved by creating a new mothercrystal to reinforce the others. Buuuuut, it'd be fairly obvious if there was a whole side of the world that never fell to Darkness. Golbez can't have missed THAT. But that's where the world being hidden comes into play- there's time travel shenanigans, alternate realities, and a dream world created to act as a shelter from the end of the world, and somewhere in that convoluted lore exists Vana'diel, safe from the Cloud of Darkness despite the world actually having been destroyed.
"You're a FFXIV player who just watched the 7.1 Trailer and know nothing about the upcoming Echos of Vana'diel raid." -> You don't need to know anything about the Game xD
Lots of the FF11 music tugs at all the emotions. Such a fantastic MMO with so many memories. So many good friends I still talk to today.

Wooow cuanto cariño y detalle 😍, espero hagan luchar el server del XI vs XIV y apaguen al que pierda jaja
FFXI was my first mmo, went to the gamestop to buy WoW 3 times and it was not available so on the 3rd time i just picked FFXI, never regretted that decision.
Played from 04 - 10
Went to XIV 1.0
Left when it was a dumpster fire and went back and forth between XI and 1.0
When they shut down it down to fix it, I went back to XI.
Where ARR came, I left XI.
lots of memories I wouldn't trade for anything.
I really like when you go back to the past yapping about final fantasy world in your streams, I really enjoy Kayapper hahah xD
Love the video, I didn't know much besides what I read on the internet so this video was very useful, I even sent it to the members of my FC who, for the most part, don't know much about the FF's world overall.
Obviously there's a variety of videos on youtube with FF lore, but hits different when is someone talking with passion, so I hope you maybe found a niche you can explore more! 💙
I played FFXI actively for eight years.
I played XI as my very fist MMO when CoP was released, and left before Abyssea, then came back before Endwalker came out, then quit again.
I've played like 30 minutes of FF14 but DAMNED if this video didn't hit all the nostalgia all the same. {Teleport-Holla} }{Do you need it?}
I never played XI so thanks for this!
You have the Joe Locke's voice. This is so crazy. Seriously crazy.
played it for 8 years i miss it
This sure bring back memories😀
The game is still up and running, albeit only on PC, and you have to download the launcher from the official website, but it's still a good game and fully-complete. I'd recommend people give it a try, though they may not like the idea of paying a separate sub on top of their FFXIV, but it isn't much, which is good.
But the game is definitely fun, and if you're into challenges, it's perfect, because even by today's standards, it gives you a taste of how tough MMO's were back then. FFXIV spoiled me and practically held my hand the whole time, whereas FFXI was hardcore and you had to actually figure things out XD
Thank goodness they have a website with wiki's on it, and full guides.
Still, there's no other game like it, and I'd recommend it, and it has a unique and interesting story.
Oooof talk about nostalgia!!
Great video review. ❤
XI is still around and still amazing. I'm glad XIV is giving it some attention.
YEP, I should have mentioned spike flail to be honest
Not me! I played FF11 for years
I’m betting SE will still require players to pay a second subscription to play FFXI though-mayhaps, I’ll watch someone else play it.
I wanted to try out FF11 just before DT launched but I couldn't beat the first boss.
(Making an account to play the game)
FFXI is simply the best game, and best MMO. Yes, even better than FFXIV- by thousands and thousands of miles.
I wish i had time to go through ffxi i got ninja unlocked last timee i played
Mhm.... "Dynamis" Lord...
Man, i really wanted a ffxi free trial like ffxiv, the sub is too expensive where i live in T_T
They have free login campaigns like FFXIV does, and I'm pretty sure you get 30 days when you buy the game initially. So pending you canceled the sub before it reoccurred you'd be fine.
What is FFXI? It's like FFXIV, but not, and better.
Kai has pink hair
THAT'S GENERIC CATGIRL OK
lol can’t wait for all the non FF11 fans to come out the wood works 😂😂😂😂
so ff11 is a confirmed shard?
But that's where the world being hidden comes into play- there's time travel shenanigans, alternate realities, and a dream world created to act as a shelter from the end of the world, and somewhere in that convoluted lore exists Vana'diel, safe from the Cloud of Darkness despite the world actually having been destroyed.
ff11 needs to be remastered. its an actual mmo not this rpg nonsense that 14 is
Why do you sound auto tuned?
"You're a FFXIV player who just watched the 7.1 Trailer and know nothing about the upcoming Echos of Vana'diel raid." -> You don't need to know anything about the Game xD
stay in ur mega simplified baby mode mmo
But I've already been deep in your mmo since 2003 😉
