Glad to see you review this game! Excited to see Xexyz hasn't been entirely forgotten. As an aerospace engineer I can tell you my love of space began with this game over 28 years ago. Your criticisms of this game are absolutely fair. But to a 4-5 year old boy, seeing the alien landscapes, saving beautiful space fairies, unlocking 'out of this world' weapons and ships, flying around in different spaceships, fighting off some of the craziest space monster bosses ever created, and exploring these crazy worlds was the ultimate adventure! This game heightened my imagination and sent me on countless 'adventures' in my youth that were no doubt inspired by this game. I too had multiple space ships (different cardboard boxes my parents let me decorate and cut up) that I would 'fly' around in and fight various giant alien bosses (my sisters large stuffed animals). I think the very different and varied gameplay helped me get sucked into this game as much as it did because it never became monotonous and always kept you excited for what came next. And boy did this game always have some crazy mechanic or villain for you to discover next. Ultimately this game remains as one of my all time favorites. When building my custom arcade cabinet I even themed it after Xexyz (which you can see in the link below), since to this day when I think arcade, I think space shooters, and no space shooter or adventure will ever be as adventurous, grand, exotic, or thrilling as Xexyz in my eyes! Keep up the great reviews 'snes drunk!' I always enjoy watching your latest videos for your quick, surprisingly detailed, and honest reviews of these classic games. imgur.com/a/5eePtjl Note if you look real close, you can see I placed the 8 bit Apollo riding his turtle space ship in the 'front' image of my arade cabinet, flying around with all the much higher resolution space ships :)
@@SNESdrunk hey thanks. Great channel and videos. I appreciate the sincere and honest reviews that you give without seeking hilarity by overreacting on the negatives. I always make it a point to catch up on your latest videos. Keep up the good work.
The music is top tier and the novel sprite design...... boss battles......... it really did have it all . Especially switching from your Double Dragons, Battle Toads... Marios Xexyz that game that is different, challenging and honestly fun.
I used to go over to my friends house as a kid and play Xexyz, Heavy Barrel and Adventure Island. Ghost n Goblins was absolutely impossible as was Xexyz.
Extremely underrated game. I remember first playing it when it first came out, I was 5 or 6 at the time, and then as I grew up, the name of the game fled my mind, but the musik never did. Several years later into my adulthood I stumbled upon the game musik and some remixes and was able to find out the name again, "Xexyz" lol, couldn't even pronounce it back then. Really is a one of a kind game.
The Japanese version released 2 years before Xexyz (called Kame no Ongaeshi) is based on the ancient Japanese legend of Urashima Tarou, since that version is a updated futuristic version of it at least. The main character in the Japanese version is a descendant of Urashima btw.
If i heard right and you said NES then its pretty good looking for the system and from what you explained it actually sounds like an underrated gem. Shhhh dont tell anyone that because they'll raise the price😁
This is the only game I ever (secretly) called the NES hotline for. And that’s where I got the last level password and more importantly, the correct pronunciation of the games title. Love the videos drunk, you are quickly becoming one of my favorite channels!
Nice ! That's a game I remember playing as a kid but I couldn't remember the name and the memory of it was to vague to actually find it. Thanks for bringing back the memory and good video !
Hm, this seems a lot like The Guardian Legend (one of my favorite NES games), which also has exploration and shoot em up sections. Thanks for letting us know about this game.
I love games that combine genres. This one didn’t quite work for me though. Why were there so many doors in the platforming levels? They completely broke up the flow. As did the ‘pick the right door’ thing in the shoot’em up phases.
+My Life With Lucario Pokemon Cartoon Thanks! I have "Blaster Master" and "Guardian Legends," and remember "Blaster Master" from my childhood. I've never played "Wurm" or "Journey to the Center of the Earth" before, So I'll have to give them both a try. :)
Well played Snesdrunk...well played. I have great memories renting Xexyz from one of those small video rental shops way way back in the day. The atmosphere is really what makes this game so enjoyable.
Loved this game as a kid. Own the cart but haven't played it in decades. Was kind of scared to because I was worried it would suck lol... But your analysis makes sense and is probably spot on. I'll give it a shot again one of these days..
This game was always one that was near and dear to my heart, and definitely a quirky zany adventure. Glad to see you did the game a justice. It's by no means an excellent game but it has a certain charm to it. Great video as always SNES Drunk! 😄
Me and my brother were just talkin' about this game earlier this morning. So you can imagine the ironic or coincidentally (whichever you prefer) amusement when we found this in the subscription feed today. P.S. I'm genuinely surprised you didn't talk about the music or giant bath women. lmao
This game seemed so epic when I was a kid. First game I played to completion after modding my NES Classic and even today I was impressed like you were at the things the game tries to cram in there.
You don't have to buy the power ups twice or even spend E to upgrade your new weapon you get from a stage. Just visit where you get the weapon for free twice and that upgrades it.
Love this game. Money (E) really only becomes a problem if you die and have to continue, but it's worth grinding out E to get the better weapons, especially right before the boss fights.
Such a fun game! It’s awesome that it’s still inexpensive. I’m guessing the title was a marketing disaster that caused very low sales. Definitely well worth playing though!
This game's ad hooked me as a kid, and i was glad to get it. I recently watched some speedruns on it and was surprised by how much is genuinely optional. I still love the vibe but I realize a lot of it is just padding
All these years I always thought the main character hand a bird beak. it wasn't until I saw the Javanese art that I realized the beak is just a visor to his helmet.
Finally, someone talking about this game can always count SNES drunk to talk about cool obscure games. This game is really good I enjoyed this immensely as a kid and still does, the music is awesome too. Managed to snatch this a few years ago 60$ brand new.
Wholeheartedly yes, especially for the Hirohiko Takayama soundtrack, as long as you're comfortable with the fact that any NES game this ambitious usually winds up a little janky around the corners
I'll have to take a picture of it sometime soon but... Back in 91 or 92 my dad bought me a cartridge of Xexyz from a garage sale, however this was an odd copy as the cover art on the cartridge was nothing even remotely close as to what was on the regular art. The cover art was the game's name with a full description of the game's synopsis. At first I thought it was maybe a page of the gameplay manual glued onto the front as cover art for some reason. However, after seeing the manual online, nothing matches. My only remaining thinking is that I have a beta/demo cartridge before it was fully released in the US. I need to get it looked at one day.
Only found out about this game last year, via MetalJesus Rocks. However, if i had not found out about it from him, and found out from you just now I would want to buy it, appreciate your run down of the pros and cons.
Duuude, I didn't know you could reenter a shop and buy the power up twice! That is a game changer! The game will probably be harder than heck but that'll make it marginally easier.
"A little bit like Super Mario Bros" was a great comment. That game may be great, but it doesn't mean we can let bizarre design decisions slide just because it's Mario!
I had this game as a kid. Never heard of it and i was looking at the back of boxes in either toys r us or Nobody beats the wiz, and i thought the graphics were so great.
Haa! This music kinda reminds me of Monster Party. i Loved that game growing up, it's not easy but it's do-able and incredibly nuts with the themes and explanations or lack of at times. 😄👍
Referring to what you said in your intro, I want to love Guardian Legend. I want to love it so much, but always lose steam whenever it isn't a shooter.
I agree with the shooter sections, they hurted my hand, specially because it doesn't have auto fire, so to finish the game, I has to use my NES Advantage.

I have fond memories of watching this video and hearing about this game, just now. It was cool...
me too, i would play it all the time but i dont think i ever beat it
I used to go over to my friends house as a kid and play Xexyz, Heavy Barrel and Adventure Island. Ghost n Goblins was absolutely impossible as was Xexyz.

I love waking up and having coffee while watching the new SNES DRUNK video. Juuuuust saying.

I wonder how did they came up with the name "XEXYZ"

Thanks for bringing back the memory and good video !
I was terrified of the bosses as a kid. One of the few NES games I can proudly say I completed on original hardware. Such an underrated gem!
Never heard of this game. Thank you very much for reviewing!
Exactly.
Hm, this seems a lot like The Guardian Legend (one of my favorite NES games), which also has exploration and shoot em up sections. Thanks for letting us know about this game.
No mention of the soundtrack? It's catchy! Sunsoft really knew how to use the NES soundchip to make some great tunes (see Batman, for example).
This was already a great game, but yeah the soundtrack was definitely hittin' too
Atlus made this game.
The Cyborg Rider level was my favorite theme. Also Blaster Master had a killer soundtrack. Dude, I remember Batman and that killer sound.
Xexyz review without a mention of the bath girls... come on now!
+FlareEX
Please elaborate. :)
One of the NPCs is a sexy girl in a bathtub, I don't know how can anyone miss on that.@@Fluoride_Jones
That was a weird side quest you had to do..beat a monster while she was bathing?! That confused me as a child..still loved tf out of this game
GOOD CALL ha ha ha
Reminds me of Monster Party on NES... with the whole going in the rooms and stuff. Solid games
I always thought as well!
Whoah! 2:33 looks like something from an early Genesis/TurboGrafx game.
I love games that combine genres. This one didn’t quite work for me though. Why were there so many doors in the platforming levels? They completely broke up the flow. As did the ‘pick the right door’ thing in the shoot’em up phases.
I couldn't get into this one either. On the other hand, as far as genre-combining games go, Vice Project Doom is awesome.

I love this game. I found the music to be the worst part
I finished this one not too long ago! Glad to hear the review of it.
The tag line for the game should be “Rhymes with Texas.”

I'm pretty sure I always buy other weirdly named games hoping it'll be this one. Adding this one to the list!
Dude I have been trying to search for this game forever. One of those games that has been stuck in my head since I was a kid.
This game is my childhood 🥰
I am enjoying the variety of reviews other than the standard SNES games. I do enjoy the Arcade reviews and hope to see more of those in the future.
3:56 hardest boss in the game by far, omg. Spent so much time as a kid getting killed by that boss.
Found a complete inbox version of this at my local video game store. I’m picking it up
COMMERICAL?! I never saw a commercial for this! This game was legit, I loved it.
I know the laser is the most powerful but as soon as I get Moon Ball, that's my go to.
LOVED this game as a kid. Forgot all about it til now. Time to revisit.
I actually picked this game up a few months back. Definitely a underrate gem in the NES library imo!
Xexy looking game!
I'll see myself out...
You don't have to buy the power ups twice or even spend E to upgrade your new weapon you get from a stage. Just visit where you get the weapon for free twice and that upgrades it.
I remember beating this game as a kid, and still having no idea what was going on. Great times :3
Shmup bosses look a bit like they are from a Darius game. And they could choose more hard name to pronounce.
The art in the commercial REALLY looked like a Darius game.
Love this game. Money (E) really only becomes a problem if you die and have to continue, but it's worth grinding out E to get the better weapons, especially right before the boss fights.
The best channel on RUclips
It was advertised a shoo em up. The commercial never showed the side scrolling. If it did the game might’ve done better.
Absolutely! I SEVERELY love Xexyz! Awesome music and great game play
Now that you mentioned it, you need to do a Guardian Legend video. One of my absolute favourites, so open and hectic and the music is fantastic.
So glad you covered Xexyz!
I played this game all the way through back in 89... loved it.
Inti Creates should do a Nintendo Switch remake, like they did with Blaster Master Zero, this game reminds me of it
Such a fun game! It’s awesome that it’s still inexpensive. I’m guessing the title was a marketing disaster that caused very low sales. Definitely well worth playing though!

Hey this reminds me of Guardian Legend a bit! Gotta play this one
3:33 It's weird but that one level makes it looks like a SNES game, as if there are more on-screen colors or something
Only found out about this game last year, via MetalJesus Rocks. However, if i had not found out about it from him, and found out from you just now I would want to buy it, appreciate your run down of the pros and cons.
Final Fantasy Ultra: Champion Edition combines the original Final Fantasy with Street Fighter II: Champion Edition... is that good enough?
So Star Ocean 3's gameplay with more shuryukens and a story not totally dogshit?
Would play
@@MixMasterLar hah, not really, but still worth checking out!
This was one of the very first video games to be made by the legendary Atlus.
If you like this and Guardian Legend, you might like Air Fortress. It's a mix of shooting and a tiny bit of metroidvania platforming.
Duuude, I didn't know you could reenter a shop and buy the power up twice! That is a game changer! The game will probably be harder than heck but that'll make it marginally easier.
I have a soft spot for this game. It was my first NES game alongside SMB/Duck Hunt.
i love this game's weird spacey soundtrack. never finished the game itself, but the music is great.
The whole thing looks actually fun. I wish I could have played this

Another great video!
Sidenote, who you rooting for in the Super Bowl?
This game has very nice music and graphics. I love it its one of my favorites.
Hmmmm. I will have to check this out, it kinda reminds me of Air Fortress were you have a shoot em up stage followed by a platform stage.
Yes! I even have the boss code uploaded on my channel.
Music is a highlight of this game. I never got past the 2nd level. I'm notoriously bad at video games though.
I believe there is a 5 screw cart variant that is a bit more rare/expensive... Just a bit of info for all us collectors who enjoy these videos

Referring to what you said in your intro, I want to love Guardian Legend. I want to love it so much, but always lose steam whenever it isn't a shooter.
This was one of my favorite NES games for a very long time. Made only slightly more sense than Magmax.
How about a Is Captain Skyhawk for NES worth playing video in the future?
Would love to hear your take on The Guardian Legend.
Your judgement is clouded this is snes gold
What about the Ultima ganmes? one of the most influencial franshises in the gaming world deserves to be covered. do it for Lord British!
Yeah just... the NES ones please and not the SNES ones...
Yeah the SNES ones are kinda boring, but Lord British needs some recognition.
Great video as usual.
Thanks for another great video. :)
I agree with the shooter sections, they hurted my hand, specially because it doesn't have auto fire, so to finish the game, I has to use my NES Advantage.
That music sounds awesome
Holy shit I’ve been looking for this games name for years!
This is one I discovered by accident as a kid. Rented it without knowing much about it and fell in love.
If I remember, Mirror let you plug a second controller in for a second player
I always wanted another xexyz game
As a kid, we just called this game X-E-X-Y-Z, just spelling it out each time because we thought it was supposed to be an acronym
How about a live drinking and play through session with a game of choice on the SNES classic? +SNES drunk
think you can do a video on 16 bit puzzle games?
