When you described just letting the cultivator go over and over the stubborn clump until it finally broke up to a nice fine powder.. It made me think of how God is the cultivator and some of us are soooo stubborn, that He has to go over us a few times until we finally come around. Your videos are always so honest and for me, very encouraging. I'm glad you remind me that's it's not about " perfection " but about going forward with what you can do and with what you have. Thanks 😁👍👍
To help loosen your clay soil, pick up a couple bales of saw dust horse bedding, it works wonders to loosen the soil plus it'll decompose in the soil. You can find these bedding products at graineries, livestock feed dealers and some times at landscape dealers. Put down a heavy layer of this horse bedding down and till it into the top layer of soil. Follow by topping dressing with a layer of rich compost. Check your PH levels. Once the seeds behind to sprout give them a boost by watering with diluted fish emulsion (well worth the cost!!!!). The sawdust horse bedding works wonders plus it brakes down as additional compost. You can also use the sawdust around the chickens. They'll scratch through the sawdust, mixing the soil and manure together, the scratching will make a cooler compost than straight manure. Best of luck with your garden. ☺

Hi y'all. Continuing to grow....he he he. With progress comes nagging little challenges. Life is for overcomers...those who when challenges pop up who can come up with a solution and then implement it. You do this all the time. You are an inspiration to others. Don't allow yourself to get distracted by the little things press forward. Like you usually say grow on. How is Lacie doing? Hopefully she is feeling better. Children? You mentioned they were under the weather. I'm writing a letter here in the comments.....hm. Well know you have people pulling for you. May HE bless you mightily. ❤.
Thank you Jerome!! The kids and I are doing well. Micah still has a lingering cough but all in all we are good. Thanks so much for checking on us!! ~ Lacie
Man, What a great kid. Few things I like more than having my Grand Kids follow me around my garden and 'taste testing'. I grow beets and turnips JUST for the greens. The roots go to the pigs to make better bacon. Win, win! A BIT of stress is the 'spice of life' Mike. Embrace it! Thru adversity we GROW. (Pun intended). JMHO...God Bless....~Eli.
Mike, I don't know how I missed your "wheel-hoe" episodes. I love my wheel hoe, and our ground is pretty much the same kind of soil. I have been working on mine for 7 years now and it does make a difference! Yesterday I attached the cultivator teeth to my wheel hoe and sprang up the weeds. Then I decided to bury those weeds by using the little disc cultivator attachment. By turning the disc inward I was able to chop those weeds up a little and then sure enough bury them about 1" deep. I have found that the little disc is more controllable when I have the disc facing inward. It is almost impossible for me to control the direction with the disc angled outward. Keep having fun, with the wheel hoe, and a broad fork there is not much you can't accomplish in your plant beds!
I have a tiny garden, and keeping it weed free is hard work, but it’s sure worth it for the wonderful food we harvest and eat. You’re doing a great job and you have a wonderful family!
I have watched this vid several times bc I love its many important messages. People do get sidetracked by trying to be perfect. People need to hear someone say--and more importantly demonstrate, "Start where you are," and "don"t let people make you feel bad". Also, seeing you take care of your health thru exercise is a lot more motivating than just being preached to about it. You & your family are not afraid to show your humanity by discussing the challenges you face. It is uplifting to see y"all successfully deal with the ups and downs of life. Thank you a million!
What I love about your struggles is that they are real and you demonstrate what true resilliance(sigh..spelling) is. I know when I start all over from scratch next spring there will be many times I will likely feel defeated, this scares me a bit to be honest. But you my friend will be my lean to in those storms..thank you
Loved the video you are spot on about the ups and downs. You were so right about do something, that can be applied so many times in life. Have a great week
Now that was a much better, smoother and more productive day. Way to persevere. You do need the slow deep breathing and some calming music helps too. I'll say a prayer for you and the family..and your right just do what you can with what you have.. blessings to you and your family 😇😇😇
SUGGESTION: When you are first starting a new row in hard-pan clay, pick a day or two after a heavy rain, and DO use a tiller (several times), and go as deep as you can. Then dump an entire bag (4 cu ft) of Vermiculite down that row and till it again. Add your compost (lots) and till it in again. Not only will it help KEEP the clay from clotting up again, but grass and weeds will pull out easier. Sounds like a lot of Vermiculite for just a row, but if your clay is like mine, you'll never regret it. You won't have to use the tiller again.
97 degrees and you're out working the homestead?? I wouldn't be able to handle anything past 80 degrees lol. Mike you're one tough guy and so right about life's ups and downs. But you and Lacey (If I spelled your wife's name correctly) got this. Shalom Wado Mike to you and yours :-)
It's refreshing to see a realistic example of market farming on a budget . In costal Oregon the weed pressure is significant because of our temperate climate and abundant rain. The only way for me to keep the pathways clear is to deep mulch with wood chips . This is a readily abundant and cheap resource here.
Have you consider having rabbits? Their manure is "cold", you can use it right away. You can put some in the hole where you plant your seedling, the results are amazing. If you use landscape cloth it will help prevent weeds, to make it easier for you.
Glad to see you pushing that Hoss Double Wheel Hoe, Mike ! I wouldn't take anything for mine! The oscillating hoes are so dang effective! I've sheered a bolt on one, but never broken a blade, and I've used them hard for 4 years now. I bought replacement blades for all sizes, figuring I would break one at some point, but it hasn't happened yet! Touch them up with the file and they're ready to go again (wear gloves when sharpening them, don't ask me how I know!) The new "Winged Sweeps" are really heavy duty sod busters too! Heck, everything those guys sell is top shelf, and they are fine folks as well!
I know you've probably thought of this already, but i could feel your frustration. It would be remiss of me if I did not share with you, with all the wooded area around, seems there would be a lot of organic matter under those trees for the taking.. just a thought. Hang in there and keep the vlogs and good vibes coming!
A lot of people are using wood chips as opposed to compost. Maybe he could check local cabinet shops etc. for sawdust to blend in with the clay laden soil. Just make sure they don't use particle board as the glues may not suit the plants. But you have a great point. The innumerous microbes in the fertile woodland soil is impossible to recreate artificially. And it really boosts growth and nutrients.
@@MikeTheFitFarmer I did not think of copperheads, they do love laying coiled up beneath the lief cover. Number one is safety, and i have faith y'all will get the soil issue worked out posthaste. Keep on, Keeping on!
I'm really happy to see things go well for you, iron must be heated and hammered to be folded but it makes it so much stronger! Blessings be with you!!!
Shalom! Mike and Lacie, sometimes visiting California will send its negative spirits to grab yah. Our family lives in California and we now have our new farm in the Ozarks, can hardly wait to be there permanently. Sometimes visits to other places will try and make you think that city life, or their life or another lifestyle is a greener side of the fence....but it isn't. Keep yourselves in the mind of Christ and you will not go wrong. Be encouraged and know that Yah will never leave you or forsake you and He loves y'all. Blessings!
The natural soil in my area of Texas is a 'loomy grayish clay'. I had to literally dig OUT that soil and replace it with Miracle Grow for several seasons after I brought my house (flower beds) before I got to a point where I didn't have to do that anymore. Now I just add more Miracle grow or compost and whatever I plant there grows fine now.
Your families honesty and openness is so refreshing. Y'all keep it real, relatable, and down to earth. This too shall pass! I have been going through the same valley this week my friend. You, are coming from a busy life of personal trainer and very scheduled to a total different lifestyle. There is a emotional sense of loss you may be dealing with. The meditation and breathing is very well worth the time. Have you ever heard of wim hof and the Wim hof method? My son just introduced me to this and the breathing and meditation. I think you might find him very inspirational. I have not accomplished this technique but am working my way up slowly. I really loved the relaxing, stretching, and meditation at the beginning. Since you are a fitness trainer, maybe you could do a short segment on these things or several videos of workouts on different intensity levels . Starting one's day with these techniques and exercise, and Father's word, helps the day go better. Be encouraged and be Blessed!
@@MikeTheFitFarmer - His method will definitely get your mind off one's stress for sure. I grew up living off the land and vegetarian. I have done hot/cold on injuries my whole life, but this guy takes it to a whole new level. I spoke with a homeopathic doctor once and they stated letting cold water run over your head on down help increase the immune system. I do this at the end of every shower and use Wim's method of breathing and challenge myself as to how long I can tolerate it. Our bodies do not get enough oxygen these days so this breathing technique really oxygenates the body, which we need. I could go on all day on this subject. We are in the process of looking for property in East TN to homestead. Maybe we will have the pleasure of meeting you and your lovely family one day and share notes. Many Blessings to you and your family.
Good video. I always think of bad days as a way to make us appreciate the good days. Life’s way of balancing it self out I guess. I also agree this heat is ridiculous.
My fit brother, you got to talk to us more about your soil improvement operation. All us would be farmers and growers are on that same learning curve. I have an unused section of the yard that I pile everything vegetative from leaves, weeds, grass clippings , tree bark and raw vegetable trimmings. My workouts are 30 - 45 minutes of aerobic turning by pitchfork and scoop 3 - 4 times a week. I keep it wet and steaming hot. With fall coming and the leaves from my neighbors I can almost go into the compost business.
Now that summer is over you may find deals on play sand you could add to beds a few bags to loosen the soil along will compost and amendments just a thought also you have friends like Justin Roads that may be a resource for compost mulch from those pigs he was raising.
I always enjoy your videos and have great respect for your positive attitude and perseverance. I have been farming over 20 years and this was my worst growing season ever. Wishing you and your beautiful family all the best for the future!
@@MikeTheFitFarmer - I know the feeling of separating those red clay globs!! NO fun at all. I'm just northwest of you. We haven't had rain either. I did see some on the weather map, but it just missed my area earlier this evening. Mike, why don't you add the row covers to your Amazon wish list? I'm sure you're very busy, hope you can find my email in there somewhere. : )
doing good hanging in there no matter what it is some day's you just have to stop and rest your mind!!!! Also for that clay you need to start with a cover crop maybe of mix of crops you can take to the market...a good cover crop will break up all the hard pan and leave a nice blanket of material to protect the next generation of plants. Gabe Brown has a good set of videos on using cover crops to increase the fertility of the soil.
On the seeder, you can order custom plates for different size seeds. Each revolution of the plate is 19 inches, so you can customize the volume of seeds that are dropped within that space. So if you need a seed every 2 inches, then you would need @ 9 holes i the right size. Hoss tools will be in my toolbox and used regularly next year. You can order a blank plate for the seeder and customize it with a drill... Well, Maybe let Lacie do it for you. She seems pretty handy. Though Mike did a good job of turning a wrench in this episode.
Oh my I’m definitely going to try the mosquito repellent! They are so bad here and I can’t even go to the mailbox without being attacked. Warm ups are needed to farm. Smart.
I'm really happy to see things go well for you, iron must be heated and hammered to be folded but it makes it so much stronger! Blessings be with you!!!
Super positive encouragement! Thanks! Please be careful in this heat!
Just relaxing and thinking is good but doing hard work while thinking helps get rid of even more stress
boy what great meditation music
Keep it up and keep trusting yourself. Love the land and it will love you back - a nice simple equation :)
Blessings!
Congratulations on the new homestead in the Ozarks, I think everyone is headed there. lol Thanks so much for your kind words. Blessings to you!
Nice, I do a couple yoga moves to warm up my muscles before I work around the 'stead. Grow on and God bless you and your family.
Glad you was able to figure out which one to use 💚
for the water tote i watched a couple on you tube glue a pvc pipe on the in side of the out let tube on the tote, worked great for them.
Your doing great.💞keep up the videos you have a beautiful family.
FAVORITE CHANNEL !!! GOD BLESS !!!
I have the same picture on my computer .😁You look more rested.Take care.
For a minute, I thought Selah was trying to trick you… too funny 😂
Yep, so glad you talked about all of the things pilling up! Happens to all of us! Can’t wait to see y’all at HOA.
Staying warm late this fall. Maybe a late drop. Grow strong.
Thanks for always inspiring!💙🙏💜🥬🌱🌾
Yes I am familiar with Wim Hof. Awesome that you know who that is.
Hope your growing situation get better soon!! We know how it is. It hasn't rained here in about 8 weeks.
thank you for removing guilt for not having a ton of money
We started with pretty much nothing so we know exactly how it is to start from scratch. Just keep going!
Selah is beautiful.
doing good hanging in there no matter what it is some day's you just have to stop and rest your mind!!!!
We love Gabe Brown
Your torch cart is awesome!
The new bed is looking mighty fine:)
Great video, beautiful daughter. Tyvvm
Good Luck!!!
Have you checked with local stables and/or dairy farmers for manure you can compost ? Many will just give it away.
Oh my I’m definitely going to try the mosquito repellent! They are so bad here and I can’t even go to the mailbox without being attacked. Lol I’m so glad you stuck with it and have got the wheel hoe to work for you. I hope to invest in some tools to make gardening more efficient. Hope we get some relief from the heat soon. Thanks
Is it a special type repellent or in-store type?
Our friend makes it. You can find it at www.mothernaturesmountain.com and use code AUTUMN for 10% off your order. All of her products are awesome!
7:45 to 8:25 Great Advice for life in general 🥰
Have you used straw/hay , grass cutting, leaves and chicken poo in your compost? I also spay my veggies with a soapy water to keep bugs off it.
