Man..listen to the guitar undercurrents Keef is laying down.. Like a deadly cable of electricity making this song more threatening..and his vocals, rough as the ages anyway, ...Best version I have heard.
Yeah the guitar on ‘Shelter ‘ on a bootleg I had years ago from the 1972 tour his guitar sounds like a jet plane one foot over your head. Maybe it’s the sustain with reverb building behind it. I don’t know. It ain’t fancy but it’s really good. Kind of like Keith. Lol
Keith creates his own ‘wall of sound’ without the string section and Phil (crazy wig) Spector. Though he did work with the Stones in the 60s and the Beatles neither band could stand him but Lennon used him again on his solo ‘Rock n Roll’ but I really digress.
@cntrydb very concise assesment and I fully agree on every point. I have seen Keith from the front row many times and met him off stage often. The most exciting time is when he and his band are on stage. There is some excitement even they feel and makes them dig deep and switch on big time. It still gives me goose bumps to watch this masterful song being worked hard.
Keith looses place sometimes, and isn't ever perfect, because he never plays a song the same way twice... THAT is what is so interesting about him, and the stones live..He always tries for the mood, the groove, and sometimes the right notes gets sacrificed in the effort....I'll live with that any day.
This is a great tune played by Keith’s band,,as good if not better than the Stones,,read Micks book,,read Ronnie book,, just finished Keith’s book,, best of the 3,,tells it from the heart,,warts and all🎸🎸
@felixq78 Thanks!! Your comments reflect what I what saying, That the imperfection, is part of what makes him so interesting, The mood and groove always touch your soul.. and keep you listening over and over for more.
Only Keith and I have done this with Emmaretta Marks, who Really Sang It Created the Iconic Intro and Screamed the Rape Murders, She was Never given Credit..or Paid..!
On the Money! Slowed down intro much closer to the original! You can really feel the power of this incredible song. Much better than recent live Stones. which I think is much too fast. Thanks Keith for bringing this song back to it’s roots.
Totally agree Mattleematlee123 my ultimate desert island disc love if they'd release it on Blu ray , by the way thanks for showing me round your Stones Museum in London after Hyde Park 2nd gig Mid July ( just as you were about to shut up shop heading to Amsterdam for the next show 2022 you might remember me the Irish guy with my wife and sister all big Keith fans🔥🎸💯👍🌟
What you have to respect, admire and love about Mr Richards is that he is as honest as he is talented-An ex-junkie who never surrendered his integrity-amazing biography- He never seems to have bought into the megastar bull that Jagger embraces-Thanks for the music Keef and thanks for the post!
AS THE SAYING GOES ALL GENIUS,S ARE FLAUD IN SOME WAY, KEEFA HAD HIS BACK IN THE DAY, BOOZE AND DRUG, HE WAS BRILLIANT BACK THEN NOWADAYS HE,S A GOD OF ROCK AND ROLL. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER MR RICHARDS. PEACE TO YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S.🙏✌️😎🏴
Just got done (after viewing Stones first live tv rendering of Sympathy, on David Frost hosted show) writing similar comment--namely; Muhammad Ali, The Rolling Stones, George Carlin--three core elements of my soul. All three spoke Truth to Power, railed against the machine/the man, proved they were the best in the world at what they did, and did not give one solitary fuck what anyone thought of them.
Although I like this rough, down and dirty take on the song, it's not as rousing as it can be when Mick sings / performs it. What their solo stuff makes clear in the first place, for me, is they're most of all special as Glimmer Twins.
Hello, I would like to speak to you about receiving your permission to use the audio from this video. Please let me know how I can reach you. Thank you.
my name is paul s i saw keith and the stones when iwas 13 i am now 55 and again on there last tour fantastickeith is in my mind the best muso on the planetkeiths other band the expencive winoes unreal the songs wicked as it seams wow and i need your love to keep me happythe best v clip i have ever seen i think you should be knighted keith u r a genius
this is live rock & roll.. raw, grinding beat.. fuck the the perfect beat.. go listen to records.. I only wish, Keith would continue to go on tour on his own...
I saw them at the then newly renovated Fox theatre in Detroit Dec. 8, 1988. A concert I'll never forget! By far the best "Stones" concert I'd been to at that point in time. Thanks for reminding me!!
They're a pretty tight band. The Stone's 20 piece live band don't do it much better than this. Saying that, Keith Richards is a genius. Makes everyone else sound very very good
just him. Keith Richards: with his basic, elementary, sound guitar playing gets an amazing version, always looking for what it's missing. Not the best guitar player, certainly one of the hard workers on the guitar. Good guy, good guitar player, good team player ( not with a great guitarist like Taylor, though).
@Montylebrango You are right, my friend. However, Keith comes from a high level blues school, where thr time is a lot less important than in moder time rock music. For this consideration, only, knowing his examples (Muddy Waters, Chuck berry) this kind of "mistakes" are really less important than the main melody. Who never missed a right note in a not really easy tun elike this, raise the hand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was his book that made me listen to this. Nice to know the story behind and the musicans. I loved the book but he should have cut it 50 pages. And it is almost scaring what you can get away with with the right connexions - quit often, like Keith, other jewes

The best Gimme Shelter ever!!!

It's ALL about the vibe, and this has it in spades. Dark, driving, soulful...what more does one need?
Love it!
This is better than Micks version....Sarah Rocks it too

I see shoutouts for everyone except Steve Jordan. He’s killing it here
Like wine, it gets better with time...
HOW COULD ANYBODY NOT LIKE KEITH HE IS REAL NOT A FAKE
I totally agree with you! Keith is the most amazing person I would ever want to talk to,hang with,etc..
Saw the Winos live - when Gimme Shelter kicked in, I pretty much lost it...
Read Keith's book about when he wrote Gimme Shelter. It's odd without Mick, but it does capture the feeling he described. Love this.
Autobiographical. Keef was seeing red curtains.
Just brilliant, typical Keith, one of a kind.
what a fantastic and true song.
who the hell is the man singing the backing vocals ??? awesome.
I never knew that Keith could sing. And he is good. Love the post.
The book is great, best autobiographie i have read
Check out Rod Stewart's auto biography, 'Rod'.
It's also really good.
Both feature a lot of Ron Wood,, LOL
I remember what we were all doing when this song first came out . . . this version epitomizes feeling of it . . . wow--didn't expect that.
What you have to respect, admire and love about Mr Richards is that he is as honest as he is talented-An ex-junkie who never surrendered his integrity-amazing biography-
He never seems to have bought into the megastar bull that Jagger embraces-Thanks for the music Keef and thanks for the post!
Awesome opening riff KEITH
Sorry, Steve Jordan, the drummer, is from the Expensive Wino's, THEN helps John mayer get street cred 20 years later!!!
Bobby Key's baritone sax really helps make this a snaking, menacing version. Best live recording of this song that I have heard
yiou need to hear the live versions with Mick T
God, this is GOOOOD!!!!!!! : - )
not so much,no.
WHERE YOU TELLING, GOD, THIS IS GOOD OR JUST SAYING GOD THIS IS GOOD. PEACE TO YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S. 🙏✌️😎🏴
The beauty of Richards is in the imperfection of his genius!
It’s called edgy
AS THE SAYING GOES ALL GENIUS,S ARE FLAUD IN SOME WAY, KEEFA HAD HIS BACK IN THE DAY, BOOZE AND DRUG, HE WAS BRILLIANT BACK THEN NOWADAYS HE,S A GOD OF ROCK AND ROLL. LIVE LONG AND PROSPER MR RICHARDS. PEACE TO YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S.🙏✌️😎🏴

this is the best version of this song, ever. steve jordan's drumming is so fucking heavy

@cntrydb
He puts a lot of soul into the guitar - which is very very very hard to do.
Way beyond even people like Van Halen, and Steve Vai
wOH kinda strange to hear Keith sing this song
69MC97gc....buy Richards' book. He explains the whole five string thing at length. This is a man who is heavily into his craft.
Absolutely LETHAL! All the musicians are so fine and the b/u singer? OMG. Gorgeous version ;3
Those winos were a kick ass band.
Pour moi la meilleure chanson des Stones. Et quel plaisir de voir Keith s'éclater comme ça....
And nowadays we're stuck with U2 and 'boy bands.' Keef and Co. are the HEAT!
Keef - enough said ❤
The guy is real !!! That's what i like. Real Rock'n'Roll !!!
Keef is cool.
If I was asked to define “cool”, I would show this clip of Keith.
Although I like this rough, down and dirty take on the song, it's not as rousing as it can be when Mick sings / performs it. What their solo stuff makes clear in the first place, for me, is they're most of all special as Glimmer Twins.
This nothing short of embarrassing , really what the fuck was that? PS I am a huge fan of the man so no hate mail,
am not sure what you mean.
this thing is so damn great.
You get the conclusions.
Cheers!

Maybe the STONES should give Waddy a tryout, better stage presence than Wood , he fits better with Keith!
fuckin; Waddy

This song based on an idea of Keith....., there is nothing to add, fantastic!!!!!!
This is Keith Richards, attheOrphem in Boston . Saturday Feb13th
this is live rock & roll.. raw, grinding beat.. fuck the the perfect beat.. go listen to records.. I only wish, Keith would continue to go on tour on his own...
Hauntingly Beautiful! ******
Online dictionaries should have this link under the word "groove". Amazing.
Brian got it right when he chose the best front man. Keith ought stay with his writing and guitar. This version is lifeless.
I saw them at the then newly renovated Fox theatre in Detroit Dec. 8, 1988. A concert I'll never forget! By far the best "Stones" concert I'd been to at that point in time. Thanks for reminding me!!
This is Keith's band not stones
You only get that sound through a Tweed amp,,,,,with a burn hole on top....
el autor de las letras son de keith richards,,,,,el estudiò.
Pure dead brilliant!
OK, this is the opinion of a 20 year-old girl: Keith is great, nice, talented but also so HOT!!!...And I'm French, we know a lot about charm!
how do you feel now that you're 26?
The ringtone on my phone . I get alot of compliments.
Would love to see keith & the winos live. Assuming they follow the Stones and play clubs.
click like... i have but its just not enough god damn it
KEEEEEEF..!!!!!!
this is great but i like mick's singing a bit better
Is this off a DVD? Please tell me it is.
yessssssssss!!!!
keef, you're the best man in this world ....
So overrated as Guitrist yet a great act!
@badbob1946 you, sir, are terribly wrong.
'lost it' in the bestest delirious sense, I'm sure
The Spirit of Keef ♥

Oh Yeah ♫
What year & location is this? Thx -
This version is amazing.

@PeteTSSF soooo agree with you
They're a pretty tight band. The Stone's 20 piece live band don't do it much better than this.

Dark. Very very dark...
Mind fucking blowing
Awesome
couldn't have said it better
The father of cool
It's the greatest RnR song of all time. Keith wrote it,. Why shouldn't he sing it?
sings it WAY better than mick ..
just him.
Keith Richards: with his basic, elementary, sound guitar playing gets an amazing version, always looking for what it's missing.
Not the best guitar player, certainly one of the hard workers on the guitar. Good guy, good guitar player, good team player ( not with a great guitarist like Taylor, though).
creo.vistes.
That's the stuff!!!!!
Wow, this is the way I would imagine JJ Cale playing this song. And it's damned good!
Rock N Roll.
