Recording Tips: M Audio Keystation 49es Review
This is a full review on the M Audio Keystation 49es also available in 32, 61, and 88 keys. In this video, I explain every feature of the M Audio key Station, and how it has helped me so much in the studio and live. If wired together with a high quality external sound source, you have a really high quality keyboard for UNDER $100. This is great for people who do not want to spend much money on a midi controller, and still have all of the sounds necessary for recording and playing live performances. I highly recommend the m audio key station 49 es to anybody. It is a gem to have in the studio, and amazing to have along with you on a live gig as a second keyboard or midi controller.

Best review on that midi controller. Thanks a lot.
the pitch sounds like a cool guitar riff
Great review. I'm going for the M Audio Keystation 49. Good to know I can connect straight to iPad without extra power.
Thanks for the great review! I just purchased this key this morning.
You can transpose notes and have touch sensitive and semi weighted keys?
Where is the Rhodes sound coming from around the 2:20 min mark? Built in library with Logic or Main Stage or is it a separate plugin?? It sounds pretty good! Been looking for a good one
I had an Alpha Juno 1 back in the day and now I have this with an assortment of vsts. Its just a shade lighter in weight.
Am I the only person who noticed how this guy has his monitors positioned ?????????
Nothing wrong with that! The problem is his stands! The look like miniture stools!
Francesco, You are my last hope. I have a M Audio Keystation 49es and I have to press the keys too hard to get a decent sound. How can I eliminate the key sensitivity feature on this keyboard. I read the manual up and down, I searched Google for two days and cannot find anything. I am sure that using Program Change can be done, but there is no place it tells you what to do. Thanks in advanced.
Hello Bro i wanted to ask that im using this keyboard of which you have given a well informative review with Cubase 5. Im having a problem that the play stop record and keypad buttons are responding in Cubase but the keys are not responding in cubase. Just want to ask whether you can help
just ordered one of these! excited
ASBØ it's such a great keyboard to have on your desk for the quick ideas, and layering. Great purchase, I'm sure you will be happy! Cheers!
I bought m audio keystation 49 &
CR4
Does anyone know how the 49es is different than the plain 49?
I also saw a review that said the keys aren't really full size.
I guess while I am asking questions, what are your good and bad experiences with piano VSTi's for the DAW's?
For production work, do the free ones pan out or do you have to pony up some $$$ to get production-level sound?
I really wanna know what are the “ch 1 - ch 16” buttons for
semi weighted keys or no?
Is there a difference between M-Audio Keystation 49 and 49es?
whast are the 5 cursor type buttons top left ?????
is it compatible with sonar? thank you
Yes. Pretty much any DAW.
Hi, is it possible for you to make a video of how to connect this midi controller to the software (ableton live lite)? Thanks.
Hi, thanks for the comment! I am unable to make a video these days because I am away for the summer, but I have found a link that maybe useful for you from the M-Audio Website. The following link shows you how to connect to Ableton Live Lite: m-audio.com/kb/article/1651
Ok! Thanks
+ΓandomPгoductions YT No Problem!
you need an AUDIO INTERFACE , more likely powered by USB that connects to the computer & DAW (digital audio workstation) . Then you might use something like ASIO4All to get the audio playback to sound thru your headphones and speaker monitors.. Audio Interfaces fix most latency problems and are ideal for recording MUSIC using laptops/computers/tablets etc etc. Good luck!
Transpose ??
Thanks for the heads up!! I have Been wanting to add this to my arsenal!!
Its a really nice keyboard, very nice to have :)
Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for your review! It helped me make my decision to buy it. Wish you lots of success in your music career!!!
+TVguy9999 Thank you! I"m glad my review has helped you out!
I have bought it last month still i cant operate it
Whats the problem? Maybe I can help? Which daw are you using?
Hi Francesco do you know how to turn on and off velocity on the keyboard?
Hi.
I have an old m audio radium 49 controller running into cubase ai4.
Is there anyway of splitting the keyboard?
Just get a VST plugin like the Korg M1 or Korg Legacy collection which has tons of combi and multi split sound patches/instruments to use with a midi controller... keep things simple Drew! 👍👍😎😂😂
You are awesome and obviously talented! What software should I download to play the keyboard on my laptop like you? Hail the Beatles! Thank You!
I know this video is really old but are your keys motion sensitive so the sound is louder whenever you hit the keys harder?
EVERYTIME I USE THE PITCH WHEEL IT CUTS OFF, ANY SUGGESTIONS
What does 'advanced' button do?
Advanced button allows you to change settings on the midi controller. On top of your keys, written in white, you will see different settings that you can change. Press the advanced button first, then click the settings you would like to change, and then press the last white key on the right. This last white key will confirm your change. Hope this helped! Cheers!
Do you still use this?
your skill in playing piano is so good, can u give me some adives in learning that? I'm new in piano ;(
Go to www.looknohands.com and learn your scales & chords in every key pitch of the piano for FREE! Click on the White letters in top left corner when You get to that website! Then learn important chord progression patterns on RUclips. Learn the MODES of each Major and minor scale because all Music comes from the scales and modes and chords we learn... Then you can play any style of music you want! 👍👍😎
Learn how to play Arpeggios! Once you get it down then you practice on your speed! Pantie dropper!
Does it support windows 10
Great reviews
Hi, in order for the keyboard to work with the sound, all we have to do is to plug and play and launch Garage Band for Mac?
bro im using Fl studio 20 its work perfectly but the volume on my midikeyboard is low not like a pc keyboard have you an idea? tnx
Hi, nice video! Can you explain me how you connect the keystation to the audio interface? Or you just connect straight to the computer and it's ok? (no latency problems).
I have an audio interface with MIDI input and output, but it seems it's not necessary in this case.
+silverfr3ak Of course I can explain :) This is a USB controller so it does connect straight into your computer. Currently, I have it connected to one of my usb ports on my computer. In another usb port, I have my usb audio interface connected. I experience no latency through my system, but the usb interface may have something to do with that (I am not 100% positive of this). What interface are you currently using? I have a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20, and experience 0 latency issues. As for the keystation, it connects via usb, and I experience 0 latency. I hope this helps, reply back if you have any other questions. Always happy to respond!
Manninofp thanks a lot! That's exactly what I wanted to know, the controller into one pc USB port, the audio interface into another and everything running fine.
I'm using a steinberg ur22 mkII.
I don't have any experience with that interface specifically, but judging by the specs and the product reviews, others are saying that there is no latency issues with the interface itself. As far as the keyboard goes, it is a pretty decent controller in that price range. If you have any questions, contact me here or visit my website at www.soundbreakingproductions.com
I have a blog there with recording tips and advice =)
Hi, I have M - AUDIO KEYSTATION 49 and its stop working. Only octave + button works and its orange. Can you help me please ? What to do ? Yesterday it works but today.......:(
What was that plugin you were using for the guitar? I love it
I used Main Stage 3 for the sounds. Very nifty app on the app store, and it syncs with the Logic Pro X Libraries. You can easily find it on the Mac App Store!
what do i need to do for the keyboard to play sound because i already have it plugged into my laptop?
Why won’t the Stop, play and record buttons don work with fl?
Hey man. I read that you are using the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 but you are connecting this keyboard directly to the computer.. I am interested in buying the Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 have you used the MIDI ports on that interface? do they work properly?
Hi! Thanks for watching the video! I currently own the Focusrite, but the thing is I don't own any midi controllers that can be connected through the device. Since I don't own any midi devices, I can't even test it for you to see if it all works. I am sorry, would have loved to even make a video of that, but I currently only own the USB Keys Station 49es which I connect via USB. They device is super clear though, and it was a huge upgrade from my previous M-Audo M Track Quad. I hope you will be able to find an answer, and if you do, please come back and comment a reply. Thanks again!
It has touch response ?
Yes it does. Harder you press, the louder it sounds :)
using it with maschine, any advice on getting the velocity fixed... so it's always at highest volume. Right now I'm slamming the keys
+Enrique Victorero From my experience, the velocity is usually adjusted in the DAW itself. I don't think the keyboard has a velocity adjustment button with it, I will have to check it out when I get home. I looked up on the native forums to see if it was possible to setup velocity for a 3rd party keyboard within the maschine software, and this is what came up.
"The velocity scaling of a 3rd party midi controller is controlled exclusively from the keyboard itself. There are no settings in Maschine software to configure this."
support.native-instruments.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/211805129-Maschine-and-midi-keyboard-Launchkey-25-Velocity-issue
The way I interpret this is that if the midi controller itself has no way of controlling the velocity, then it can't be done from the Maschine software (DAW) itself. I think this can be done from other Daws though including Logic Pro X. The MIDI settings are more advanced in these other DAWS.
Thanks for replying, I was told by m-audio to look into a program that could serve as a middle man that pushes the signal through at max velocity... idk
+Enrique Victorero I don't know if this will help you in any way, but I looked up a way to change velocity of a midi keyboard through 3rd party programs and other ways. I came up with a thread on reddit with solutions of changing velocity of your midi keyboard without using your DAW. I hope this can help you.
www.reddit.com/r/audioengineering/comments/2kdo75/how_to_force_velocity_to_100_on_an_old_keyboard/?
Enrique Victorero does it go well w maschine
Idk if I'll get a reply but I'm debating whether to get this or the akai 25 mini? I mean which had the better sounds or just better in general
Hi, thanks for your comment! These two keyboards do not have sounds that come from the keyboard itself, instead you will have to get a sound module, or use a DAW with sounds in it. There in the same price range and they are very similar. Here is my review on the akai 25 mini,
www.soundbreakingproductions.com/soundbreakingproductionsblog/akai-mpk-mini-mk2-mini-midi-controller-review
Hope it helps!
Just bought one of those for $5 in Goodwill, that's why I'm here watching this video. I don't play keyboards but I'm looking forward to trading it for a guitar pedal or something I could use
great review
Thanks!
can you create beats here like in the akai mpk mini?
i want to compose some music for my shot film, where should i start i have no knowledge of music or any instrument?
Music is something that takes a long time to learn. It maybe better to look up some royalty free music, or if you have a budget, hire someone who is able to help you. As far as composing music, you need to understand the basics of music theory first. Theoria has some tutorials on their website. Also, knowing how to play chords can help spark melodies. Depending on how good your ear for music is, you can experiment with a piano and play the melodies you made up.
i'm really glad you replied, can you suggest me some good book to learn composing, or may be some paid course on music composing... i really want to learn this craft.
Rohit Goswami I don't know much about books on composing solely because composing is something that comes naturally based on experiences the person has. I am sure there are books, just search google for a book on composing. I am sure it will just be a book with different techniques to use, but if you don't know theory, you can't put those books into use. A song consists of many different melodies which make up the piece of music. I can lead you to a textbook which I used to learn theory, and that textbook is called Tonal Harmony. It is jam packed with concepts and can be a little overwhelming, but its a good book to learn theory. As far as composing goes, listen to music, all types of music constantly. Immerse yourself in it.
Man are those Mackie CR4's ???
Awesome good review
what song was the one you played?
+Caca It's actually a riff from a song I wrote, plus I added a little solo after. Thanks for the comment!
Manninofp well i like your song!!
Thanks! Appreciate it!!
how to set up play recoding. stop with keystation 49 controller
Thank you for your comment! Follow the instructions below! It should work.
Logic X requires one extra step. Try this:
1) From the top bar, go to Logic Pro X>Control Surfaces>Setup
2) In the Control Surfaces window, select New>Install
3) From the list, select Mackie Designs>Mackie Control>Logic Control
4) Click "Add" below
5) You'll see a console like icon appear. Select this.
6) From the Device:Mackie Control menu to the left, set the Output/Input ports to the Keystation. Depending on your OS, you'll set it like below:
Output Port: Port 1
Input Port: Port 2
(some OS may show "Keystation" in the name as well)
Hope this helps!
I find the keys really spongey with this keyboard.
My Brother is going to get that piano
+Jayson Prejean Great! I really do recommend it!
SUPER BOS GOOD I WELL BUY ME TO
Ok tú las fabricas este danos una idea de cómo aser una

Your timing was off @ 4:30! Second you should look into (Yamaha Montage) get rid of the "K-Mart Keyboard"
Keystation 49 = $50 Yamaha Montage = $3000, that's a whole lot more green you have to burn.
no thank you just intrested in looking at the keybroad
