I am so (sew) grateful for this video. These are the exact steps need for Simplicity Pattern 8180. I am a beginner/intermediate level currently taking classes and would've had to wait to return back to class in order to finish this shirt. You are very thorough and easy to understand. Thank you for taking the time to share your talents and skills all the way down to the bonus cocktail stick. I may try that technique instead of using the button tool that came with my machine. I am making a dress shirt for my husband which was supposed to be done in time for Father's Day, but at least it is still June...LOL
I’m glad I could help! 😊 Best of luck getting the shirt finished. There’s another video on how to attach a shirt collar and one that shows the whole shirt making process, in case they offer you any additional help.
Outstanding video!! Thank you so much. The directions and play by play visual instruction are right on the money. I truly appreciate you doing this. To tell you the truth, I was ready to turn in the towel because I basically did not understand how to proceed and got very frustrated. Now I can finish my top, thanks to your excellent directions. You are a great instructor.
Thanks for this fantastic video! The instructions in my Simplicity shirt dress pattern made absolutely no sense until I found this. The pace, filming and clarity of your explanations are great.👏👏👏
Thank you so much. I'm from the Netherlands and although my English is pretty ok, I struggled with a McCall's pattern, especially the sleeves! Now I have the nerve to try it. Thanks again!
Thank you for making this video from beginning to end. I’m trying to learn how to sew a sleeve cuff to the first clothing article - a dress - from sewing pattern. Unfortunately, the most of the directions on the pattern assumes you know how to assemble the pieces together already
Great tutorial!. It is very tricky to add that continuous lap, but you have shown how well it can be done. I was hoping to get some idea of measurements for the actual placement of the placket or lap. (how far is it from teh back seam or midpoint of the sleeve? Want to add a cuff to an existing blouse and don't have a pattern at hand to follow. thank you and hope you do more as you cover the topics in good detail, especially if you are new to sewing.
I glad you found the tutorial useful. The opening for the placket / continuous lap is mid way between the seam and the centre line of the sleeve, in the back section of the sleeve. On my sample it's about 9cm in length from the hem but could be longer or shorter depending on preference. Hope that helps :)
Hi - this is copied from a commercial pattern - I think it’s either Simplicity 1327 or 4760 - both men’s shirts. I also have Simplicity 9818 which is a women’s shirt in this style but it’s quite an old pattern.
Perhaps you could say whether this is a right or left sleeve, and that the pattern needs to be turned over for the other sleeve! (By the way, the volume gets progressively quieter and I find it difficult to hear) Good video, thanks. The final cuff is perfect! Are man's shirt cuffs the same?
Hi - thanks for watching and for your feedback. There is more detail about the sleeve in the video description. I made the video for my students who had missed classes to help them to complete their sewing technique samples as part of a college course. I think the quality of the videos has slowly improved over time as I've got more used to the technology! 😊
Thanks for the comment. I am a 70+ male, new to sewing - occupying myself during lockdowns. Having mad masks, I am branching out into more challenging projects. I have made a waistcoat and am working on a shirt. I have seen the sewing bee contestants putting 2 same arms on a shirt or jacket and I wanted to make sure I had a right cuff on the right sleeve and left on left, but I was finding it difficult to work out which cuff went on which went where. I have now worked it out! Patterns tend to assume that users are more expert than me! Thanks again, Trefor
@@treforjones6289 Wow! - sounds like you've been very busy making up various projects. Pattern instructions do often miss out quite a lot of important information! It is also quite easy to out sleeves in the wrong armholes, particularly if you fabric is the same on both sides or you forget to add the notches and markings around the sleeves and armholes. I always mark an x on the wrong side of fabric where it's hard to ascertain the right side. Happy sewing!
Thank you so much for using fabric and cotton that makes it easy to see what you are doing. This is an excellent demonstration. Thanks
Thank you for such a lovely comment! - glad I could help 😊

I’m looking for a sleeve pattern similar to this one, with two pleats and a cuff. Did you draft this yourself or is it a commercial pattern?
Hi - this is copied from a commercial pattern - I think it’s either Simplicity 1327 or 4760 - both men’s shirts. I also have Simplicity 9818 which is a women’s shirt in this style but it’s quite an old pattern.
Thanks for this fantastic tutorial!! very appreciated! Can I ask you how wide is the dart at the bottom?
Hi squinternet1 there isn’t a dart at the bottom of the sleeve. There are two pleats, the distance between pleat lines is 3.5cm
I mean that triangular stitching you do before slashing
It's 1.5cm wide and 10.5cm long
thank u so much

Excellent so nice
Hello! The piece of fabric you used for the continuous lap was it cut on the bias? Thank you!
Sha-Leine Green no it’s cut on the straight grain. No need to be bias cut since it doesn’t curve.
