Ende November fand das SWR NEWJazz Meeting zum 50. Mal statt. Kurator des Jubiläumsjahrganges war der 24-jährige brasilianische Gitarrist Pedro Martins. Vom 24. bis 26. November präsentierte das Sextett Spider's Egg die Ergebnisse des SWR NEWJazz Meetings in Mannheim, Tübingen und Karlsruhe.
Das SWR NEWJazz Meeting ist das legendäre Klanglabor des Südwestrundfunks in Sachen improvisierter Musik. Für den Jubiläumsjahrgang konnte der Gitarrist Pedro Martins als Kurator gewonnen werden. Er stammt aus der brasilianischen Bundeshauptstadt Brasilia und zählt zu den großen Jazzstimmen Südamerikas.

This is some of the most beautiful music I've ever heard in my entire life!
That Bass! I mean (nearly) everything about this is amazing but the sound of a bass that doesn't have the strings flapping against the frets is truly wonderful, and the playing was immense.
Beautiful sound, beautiful performances. I add that beyond the influences of Kurt Rosenwinkel, Hermeto Pascoal is something of Milton Nascimento in the sound of Pedro's guitar and voice. The presence of Genevieve shine and enchantes all.

Genevieve: Yet another captivatingly beautiful and iridescent hue from an artistic chameleon with a seemingly infinite and rich variety of colors. A striking contrast compared with Knower; completely different energy here, and the pensive & floating qualities of this ensemble serve to evoke emotionally intimate & vulnerable aspects of Genevieve which are rarely on public display. A truly wonderful performance from everyone.

There are so many live videos on RUclips where the sound quality is so muddy that you miss out on a lot of what's going on.
This concert was not only brilliantly played, but also brilliantly recorded so that all of us who where not in Karlsruhe that night can still get a really good experience of the music. THANK YOU! :)

Oh my kind of Jazz - I am of the old ECM school of chamber and ambient jazz - this has all the elements i love, and I have seen Pedro before performing with Kurt Rosenwinkel - but never as band aficionado and leader. This is wonderful and seeing the strikingly beautiful Genevieve sing so well with interesting songs and magnetic lyrics - this is golden in my mind - I hope they visit Britain - a fantastic band.

Is it my headphones, or are the drums quite a bit further back in the mix in this? Maybe I'm showing my biases, but I'd like to hear more drums. Any mixers out there that can tell me if I just need better headphones, or if this is not a very drum-forward mix? I can hear them, but not a crispy as I'd like and there is a lot going on that I am just getting hints of.
