David has explained this so well.
I think there's a natural detective in many people.
I always watch the FBI Programme on TV.
It is the forensic investigations that I love to watch

It not just a nation that’s obsessed….it’s the whole world…..we have tv series, movies, and true crime channels…plus RUclips to watch…and the majority is made and comes from America. If I watch “cosy crime” I look at them not because of the violence but as a puzzle putting the pieces together to see if I’m a good couch detective or armchair slueth

It's not that complicated. Most of us live boring, tedious lives and true crime stories provide a temporary dopamine rush.

Interesting though isn’t it how opinions have changed over the years. I’m 37 & remember being fascinated with the world of true crime etc when I was in my early teens onwards, often due to the psychology of it all, as well as ‘trying to be an armchair sleuth’ even at that tender age, however, the amount of people (friends AND family, as well as work colleagues!) who were very quick to point out how ‘odd’ / ‘weird’ / ‘disgusting’ it was - as if I sort pleasure in the victims pain (I did not, I don’t believe that’s any of our motives!) was quite alarming, so I kept quiet about it for years. Then all of a sudden documentary’s started coming out, more & more people started to watch them, talk freely about them etc. Attitudes have most certainly changed over the years, thank goodness too!

British true crime is MUCH better than American. Better written, better cast.
