  • Gobedah, the religion of the Garifuna people, probably has less than a million followers. But its roots go back many centuries, to Africa, and then by way of countries like St. Vincent, Grenadines, Honduras, and Belize. Now the Bronx and Brooklyn neighborhoods like East Brooklyn and Brownsville play home to the Gobedah religion.
Joining us to tell us about the meaning and ceremonies of Gobedah and where they comes from, are Jose Francisco Avila, Chairman of the Board of the Garifuna Coalition USA, Inc., and "Wanny" Alvarez Angerer, a performer who was just given a lifetime achievement award by the Garifuna Music Awards.

Let the gentlewoman/expert speak! I felt the interviewers interrupted way too much..

I’d say the Maroons & Garifuna are familiar in lifestyles. They’ve sustained their African & Native fusion culture for centuries! 🇻🇨🇧🇿🇭🇳 🇵🇦 🇯🇲 We are all connected

A very interesting interview. It is very sad in some way, how we are losing our culture. I hope we adults will start teaching our children how to speak in Garifuna.
