The Garifuna of Guatemala

- The story behind this video starts on the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent. In 1635, two slave ships wrecked there and the African slaves escaped to freedom. They mixed in with the native Caribs, giving birth to a new Afro-Caribbean culture - the Garifuna (Gareefoonah). In the centuries since, the Garifuna migrated and founded villages along the Caribbean coast of Central America. Lonny Shavelson reports from Guatemala. Philip Flores of Livingston says their ancestors where there Before slavery
I was born in Guatemala. I love how diverse guate is and is home to different ethnic groups of people. It’s what makes the country more beautiful in my eyes. ❤️
With Love i watch from Cameroon. But with much regret i feel what your ancestors went through. Looking forward to pay you guys a visit of spiritual healing. To also share with you our experiences over here. Long live Garifuna.
I think it is good if you do not write that the Garifuna "migrated" which is actually a lie, they were robbed from their country, killed and sent away by the British.
Yes the culture is beautiful, but we need the whole history to understand it.
Thank you very much
Well they can always pack their bags and move to AFRICA.
GUATEMALA BELONGS TO THE NATIVES not to this new immigrants that were force to move, they free and move out my control.
@@alcaponeimgonnagyou5327 are you for real you maybe native but not indigenous do your home work and stop believing in lies...

QUE DIOS BENDIGA ESA SANGRE LINDA Y DULCE!
HERMOSO MUY LINDO I
Trust me i see alot of Cameroon and Congo in them Brothers
I am a mestizo Guatemalan (Maya/Spanish) but my DNA test said I also have Cameoon/Congo, Portuguese and British which totally surprised me. I think the Garifunas are mainly western African with some Carib/Arawak from Sint vincent. The boats that brought them from Africa were PORTUGUESE sailors but the slave trade authority in the lesser Antilles (Saint Vincent etc) were BRITISH. I bet many Fuatemalans with Garifuna full, partial or even trace ancestry like myself have also those Cameroon, Portuguese, British traces. Thanks for your startling insight, I am going to research, there aren't many people tested in that region that I know but you definitely made an interesting point.
I respect these people
I love going to Livingston
I miss it there!!!!!!
Set up video recording for them to speak their original Garifuna language and translate it in english, spanish and french. Upload the recording to RUclips, Instagram, Facebook and creat a website for this original Caribs people in Livingston Guatemala.

Garifunas as indigenous to ST. Vincent & the Grenadines
♥️🇬🇹🇬🇹🌋👑✨🔥Guatemala
The Garifunas from Central American should visit the ancestral nation of the Garifuna people, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
They will get a chance to visit the island of Balliceuax in the Grenadines where over 4000 "BLACK CARIBS" were rounded up by the British after they were defeated in the second so-called CARIB WARS.
Quiero a mi gente garifuna 🟡⚪️⚫️ pa siempreee 🇭🇳🇭🇳
I would like to visit your community
There is much more to the history. The slave wrecked outside St. Vincent. Later the British Invadors killed the Vincentians because they did not want to grow free crops for the Europeans, finally the British killed Chatoyer and Kidnapped 5000 Garifunas (Vincentians) and left them on a small island outside St. Vincent. There half of the original Vincentian population died and the other half was shipped off to Honduras.

Moreover, the Garifunas from Central America will get a chance to visit "CARIB COUNTRY" on the Windward side of the Island where most of the Caribs live and also they will get the opportunity to visit the town of Biabou (this is the town where the "BLACK" CARIBS" who were not sent into exile were placed on a RESERVATION after they lost the second Carib War) and the other villages where the descendants of the "BLACK CARIBS" still lives on the Leeward side of the island.
im not a garifuna i am a ladino but respect garifuna =]
Ladino, what is that?
@@myworld4257 they are mestizo, criollo/white, or native/Afro that do not belong to an ethnic group and have assimilated to mestizo/ white culture…
I like the dance :D
I am from St. Vincent/,/Hairouna/Yurumein, the ANCESTRAL LAND of the GARIFUNA people.
Paramount Chief, Joseph Chatoyer, is the FIRST and ONLY NATIONAL HERO of St. Vincent and the Grenadines
💜💜💜🙌🏽
I will be out that way in January and would like to meet local black folks
Do they ever consider visit St.Vincent.The history of the Caribbean is amazing. The koromantee people and Garifuna .Atleast some preserve the culture.

Nobody cares about your cult especially the Garifuna.
@@anthonyjeyworksout6568 No Shit that’s nothing new
@@Hiddenone00 I mean Garifuna don't care about your cult.

This took place after Paramount CHIEF of the "BLACK CARIBS," Chatoyer, was killed in St. Vincent aka Hairouna aka Yurumein.
Over 2000 of the "BLACK CARIBS" died after suffering from starvation and diseases. Those who were alive were then sent into exile on Roatan Island off Honduras.
First of we are not freed slaves tf👀👀 we the Garifunas/black carib were exiled from st. Vincent after loosing a war to the British soldiers for refusing to be slaves. Hence why we are the only black ppl that still holds it culture in totality language included. Put some respect on who we are.
I am going to Guatemala in January again and would love to connect with my black people out there
So a people that were never slaves have no african language, no african culture or customs, no african nothing, yea what ever. They don’t even look african. Stop with the lies, those are the ppl of that land
KEEP ON DREAMING
@@chandnikumarov4459 prove your point.
@@jimkingswood4914 I just proved it.
These are ethnically zambo people, a mix of African and Native American. Their africna ancestor were brought to be sold as slaves but due to the shipwreck, they were never slaves…then mixed with local population…
They literally consider themselves African
@got2bchapin Maybe you should go over there and find out for your self, but my experience is that, when it comes to laziness and F@cked up attitude nothing beats the blacks born in the States. I've met other black people from African Nations, and they are nothing like that. So this people here I will assume they are hard working. I love being Guatemalan. Ahora nomas lo que nesecitamos es educarnos un poquito mas. Vamos Guate adelante.
