The Come album is great. I don't know why people didn't like it. His most explicit piece. Sexhibition to the fullest but also deep, introspective and soulful. Thanks for this review Prince Friend, this review is probably the best review I have had the pleasure to listen to covering this superb album 'Come'. Your analysis and metaphor comparison is truly outstanding. Come is probably one of Prince most underrated albums, as well as the 'Chaos and Disorder' album, which is also, in my opinion a fabulous album, misunderstood but powerful as a message of coming through dark times. Thanks again..
This is my favorite album, I never had it before until after he transitioned. But I can only play it on a Friday or Saturday night with some Brown liquor. :) Excellent review thanks for the inside information about Vanity too.
"Come", apart from "Letitgo", is brilliant, criminally-underrated album. "I always felt "Letitgo" didn't belong and "Space" should have been the lead single.
Thanks. I remember buying this on CD back in '94, and was intrigued not only by the music, but by the B&W photography. Later bought Terry Gydesen's, "The Sacrifice of Victor" picture book which has the same photography from the time. I think "Papa" may have been about his Stepfather, Heywood, rather than John-just my 2 cents. The horn lines on "Come" as well as the keyboard riffs and bass are KILLER, especially with "Dark" (an old-school Al Green vibe), and "Letitgo". Wish he'd done a video for that song. thank you for your great insights (i also didn't get that about space!). i have always loved this album and thought i was going nuts when it first came out and the reviews were so bad. i heard him sing 'papa' at an aftershow in a teeny club in sf, reading the lyrics from a notebook as i guess he'd just written it. i hope he knew how much he is loved.
sperrotta91 hahaha same here only a reverse quote that you can read in a mirror . I think he wanted to have that dark enigmatic aspect the physical album is an art object by itself
It’s an amazing album, I love it! Here’s my ranking: (I think the side B is so better than A but I love all the tracks!) 10- Orgasm 9- Loose! 8- Space 7- Come 6- Race 5- Pheromone 4- Solo 3- Dark 2- Letitgo 1- Papa
this is definitely one of my favourite albums by prince. It's a shame it's not more popular because i think it's gotta be as strong as his more famous stuff.
Love your interpretation and I totally agree - in terms of the pure sexual nature of the LP and the allusions to the record industry. Prince was just so SMART and talented to create this masterpiece! He was the master of innuendo and metaphor 💜💜💜
Another great review! I realised that I had heard most of the tracks individually and hadn't grasped that they were from the Come album. You have inspired me to buy it. I Your theory about the WB connection is also very persuasive!
The underlying overall concept and inspiration was an ancient story, yet it seems to totally go over the heads of fans. When Prince changed his name to a symbol after this album, and other Glam Slam club events and concerts, it all hit me, and it's rather amazing. But I'm not going to point it out to any of you, but rather I think so called Prince fans and fams, need to delve deeper and just really think about what you're hearing, every bit of this album. It's all there, I think the Come album has NOTHINg to do with WB other than maybe 'Lelittgo'. And Come was an album where he just kind of gave up and said, okay, here's my final album with 'Prince', just to jam WB. The Come album was kind of an after thought to a larger concept that expanded over from early Gold Experience, an opus, that started from around late 1993 through 1994, and then finally morphed into Gold. The inspiration still is there and you an see it in the photos of the band and Prince in the Gold Experience. Anyway, it's late, but I just remembered this album, how much I loved it, and the era, and realizing and discovering the whole theme and inspiration, references Prince was doing at the time to ancient history. -- Gary
Always been a big listener to this experience . I remember hitting play on track one Come and going through 11 mins and 20 sec of no words . The song took me to a place where I was lost in a good way. I thought to myself this man is in artistic captivity and he creates this song. OMG - its still on of my favorite hidden tracks . If you are a fan he tore it up. Now with this said - Space maxi single Universal love mix . I could spend so much time on that. Then let it go maxi single Cavi-mix with Ballad of Dorothy Sample smooth ! Keep it going Prince's Friend
i really like this era -- SOOOOO many good songs were recorded during this time (early '93 into late '94) . AWESOME !!!! - i heard EndorphinMachine was supposed to be on this album at one point in time .
On the pheromone page on 'Prince Vault': a fan asked where the story/lyrics for the song came from, to which Prince replied: "Carmen Electra and The Crazy Horse."
For the media and record companies to deem something isn't "radio-friendly" is highly ridiculous, because people eat whatever they are fed. Those who listen to radio and watch television on the regular are, for the most part, sheep and if told something is good, will agree. Had "Come" not been blackballed, it would have been a success.
Really like your interpretation of the track order and how the songs fit together to tell a story. I never caught that before. It worked on me subconsciously, but never realized why.
Sorry I am “coming” late to this party/review. I have just started as a Patreon and am trying to get caught up on everything I have missed. Maybe I am a raunchy, but I have always liked this album. I have this vinyl album artwork framed and on the wall. Interesting analogy of switching out WB for the woman. Now I will have to re-listen to the album and see if that trade out works for me. Great review! Excellent insight!!
Glad you’re catching up. There’s a a lot of videos to binge on. And yup, a slight change in perspective can change the entire thing. Wonderful thing about music. Cheers!
I have always love the Come album. From the first ti me i heard it. Solo i listen to the most because i was at a low place in my life at that time. It helped me deal with my own feelings.
I think this is a big album . Relaxed , full , no pretend , 10 songs - (enough) ,48 min - great timing . One musician said to me " Find and listen album "COME " if you want to listen Prince this summer ".
Received my Come Album today and love it. Been wanting it for ages and also got my Gold album too which I also love. I am a happy lady. I enjoyed listening to your review of Come album. 💜💕💜💕💜💕
I think this album is so f**king underrated, it's one of my favorite Prince albums! I love tracks like: Letitgo, Space, Dark, Come, Pheromone, and more.
Thank you. I never gave prince a chance after the mid 90s (many life distractions). But now thanks to your help I get to experience greatness again . Letitgo is my new favorite enough to add it to my playlist
I like the theory aspect it seems idealism since that was happening the war with WB maybe it's really the deeper meaning no one ever solved this is really a great review I hope you can touch on the remixes QD3 did let us see your review of that I love the dark feel of the album you can tell Prince went to underground clubs in London ect maybe even LA to check out the newer sounds to experiment that was emerging the driving electrical dance house music & sprinkling some funk so to speak on a couple of track's not to much but making it digestible for the ear I can't wait for the Gold Experience review I'm pumped already
Awesome Review, Bro. PF! I remember getting this album in my senior year of college. Ran out to the record store and then ran straight back to my dorm room to check it out. Another one of the most underrated, misunderstood albums P did IMO. . .Full of clever wordplay, clever double-entendres, mixed with some brainfood. I also remember playing the Universal Love remix of Space at a radio station I worked at that same year. Fave song on this album is Letitgo. I also agree it's a metaphorical articulation of his battle with WB, with the album Exodus finalizing his exit from WB. Masterful work by Bro. P. Thx 4 what U do! Peace.
Listened to this for the first time on Saturday since I'm just deciding to open my mind more and this will probably be my favourite album for a long time every song is perfect there is not a single part of this album I don't like. Truly amazing
Agree with your review...feel it is one of his most 'statement' albums, lyrically and thematically, there are legitimate classics. Come is moving, cutting and brilliantly focused. Standouts Papa and Solo, really untouchable. Letitgo had a slight Soul II Soul feel. Correct me, was June part of these sessions? Thank you. Great video yet again.
It was great album..I brought the album back in 95 when it was released or 94..I loved it.The album accompanied me during my tour with a Gospel Group back in 95.
I love Prince, but this has always been near the bottom for me (along with The Black Album). It just felt very “dark” and depressed, without so much of the joy that’s evident in much of his output. That said, I’ve always loved “Loose!” which I think is a killer track. And now you’ve got me thinking I need to give this one a fresh listen. One thing: I remember a lot of spoken/musical/sound effect interludes, which I don’t think you mentioned at all; those had always put me off too, for some reason. Thanks for all you do!
I never realised the lyrics to Space were a sexual metaphor. They must have gone over my head I think. LOL! But I love this album, literally every review you read on it tells you that it's just a bunch of throwaway songs to fulfil his contract, but they're wrong, it's a great album. I love the saxophones in Come (the song). I think this album went to No. 1 in the UK too.
This is one of my fav albums. I have been on it since Thursday. It was calling me this weekend. OMG!!! And I love there are different versions of both Come and Space. 💜💜💜💜
Great review!Very nice to see that so much people(including you) DO really rate this as the truly great album i think it is.His best 90´s album for sure!Though i have recognized some songs since that i have missed out in some of his 90´s albums, i still think he were so uneven in the 90´s.He got a little better after that, but only released a few albums of real greatness. But still almost every album has had some masterpieces on them!
Thanks Prince Friend. This album is really very underrated. The whole album is fabulous in it's mystery and supposed blatant shock value 'Title' statement 'Come'. In my opinion I would describe the whole album as a 'Dreamweaver' of an album. You may ask, 'What do I mean with this rhetorical statement (Dreamweaver of an album?)' Come is an album that opens up with the sound of flowing water, relaxing, soothing and cleansing. The song 'Come' then proceeds out of the swooshing sound of water as an atmospheric funky groove with mesmerising brass horns and sleigh bell sound hook throughout. The opening song 'Come' is just great. The song 'Space' continues on the atmospheric theme like a mystical soul in a state of coma that can do anything in his or her own dream. Hence the Dreamweaver atmospheric nature of this particular album. 'Pheromone' continues with the Dreamweaver theme, so Funky that I am floating in a state of pure sonic and rhythmic pleasure. The album creates a mood as if floating in outer space in a complete dream state. The song 'Loose' traverses as if in a futuristic world moving at supersonic speed through a new universe - high octane rhythms and tantalising synth and guitar hooks. The song 'Papa' is a haunting song of child abuse. This song speaks to me of Prince trying to rid himself of the ghost of that bad memory of his childhood, like a confession and a cleansing, and a driving away of that spectre. The song 'Race' is also a song confessing of pushing away the negative energy of Race discrimination, of how we all have to come together as human beings and move away from the separation by use of labels such as 'Race'. The theme throughout the album has the cleansing sound of flowing water as segues in between the individual songs. The song 'Dark' is one of my favourite Prince songs (I also love the Crystal Ball disc 1 version of 'Dark'). It is a truly beautiful song. 'Solo' is atmospheric and haunting, it is a beautiful song without musical accompaniment apart from the isolated sound of a heavenly solo harp. The song 'Letitgo', I really love this song, this song is uptempo laid back funk, an effortless groove of bliss. The final song, a short clip of the sound of a guitar with distortion is a little bit naughty with alleged sounds of Prince Girlfriend Vanity in a state of ecstatic enjoyment...great songs. This album is definitely in the top 10 of Prince most enjoyable albums on a par with, 'Emancipation', 'The Gold Experience', 'Musicology', 'The Love Symbol Album', 'Lovesexy', 'Lotus Flow3r', 'The Vault Old Friends 4 Sale', 'Chaos and Disorder' and 'Sign O The Times'.
You're right on point with your theory ... All though I didn't care for the COME album too much ... I felt our friend at a critical crossroads and he just wanted to move on. Thank goodness for the track "Let it go," at least we had one jam to funk to :-)
The guitar sound on "Orgasm" is a sample of a feedback guitar solo from "Private Joy", & the moaning is Vanity, from the unreleased "Vibrator". In the liner notes, Vanity is credited as "she knows".
Your theory on the hidden meaning behind the album just blew my mind. I really enjoy Come for the lyrics and how Prince didn’t shy away from the sometime dark and frank sexuality.
Oh wow thanks for that! I know my takes aren't the norm, but I like to look at things in a different way than the norm. And yeah, it's weird that the first half of the album is what people think of when they say that it's "sexy"but the whole second half really isn't. Weird that gets overlooked too.
Your analogy blew my mind!!! I never looked at it that way and now I prefer that take on it! I enjoyed the album Come! I feel like Come, Space and Pheromone may be one of his best three track runs. I also love Race and Letitgo! The other songs will take some time to grow on me. I don’t necessarily think a song like Papa is a like or dislike kind of song but instead a song with a deep message that you’re either in the mood for or not. Not sure quite where it fits in my Prince ranking yet!
I've been delving into "Come" big time lately. I didn't even realize it was the 25th anniversary. 💜💜💜 I've been soaking it in...every track...over and over and over. That's the way I love to process his genius. Tracks have been my fill this week...truthfully just about every track jaw drops me. I didn't realize there was an original "Come" album. Very interesting. ✌💜✌💜✌ I actually love the transition between Come and Space...takes me to a dream like space. I'm so in love with this album. I think it's just more pure brilliance. "Race" is so very appropriate to our current climate in the US. "Papa" rips your gut. 💜💜💜 More Prince "not even slightly subtle" sexy tracks that make you go....whoa. lol. Okay...I LOVE every song on this album. 💜💜💜 Learned a lot from your post. Thank you. ✌💜✌💜✌
I love your theory on this album and I agree with it whole heartily. Prince was such a master at spinning his lyrics to mean so much more. I absolutely love, love, love, this album from the funky dance beats to the sadness of Papa, it still makes me want to cry, when I hear it. When Prince “Letitgo”, I truly believe you could hear the growth in him and his music especially in the Gold experience album, and from that point on. Thanks for sharing the Abuse hotline #, awareness is half the battle. Just letting people know that there is help out there is monumental. Much respect. We must remember to take care of each other. As always, another great review!!
Only listened to this album in its entirety the other day. Loved it from beginning to end. Your theory about the album is incredible! Never thought of it that way!
That album has one of my favorite ravers... Loose! as well as two other favorites Space and Letitgo. I'm not a big fan of the rest of the album if I'm honest, but those 3 tracks made it well worth the purchase... That's my 2 cents on Come... Editing this part in... I forgot all about Race being on there until I saw more of your review. That's a great track too. I always felt like the songs on Come were meant for his Dawn opus which they wouldn't let him release, and therefore, I felt cheated but that truly shouldn't take away from the experience of listening to Come. I still wonder how much different The Dawn would've been to Come and Crystal Ball, but I suppose we'll never know... Peace friends :D
Oh wow, I had never really paid attention to the thematic evolution of the album, (cause as a French person I didn’t get all the lyrics). So if “Letitgo” is about letting go of the “Dark” sides of our lives (abuse, breakups, physical pleasure) maybe it means we “Come” & have an “Orgasm” not physically, but philosophically, in finding happiness in ourselves?! What do you think? (Just saying, my favorite song on Come is “Loose!”, which is definitely in my top 5 Prince’s songs). & also I really really love your videos, it’s awesome to have opinions from an other perspective on an artist I truly adore & your reviews are dope. I’m 27 which means I wasn’t born for most part of Prince’s career & was introduced waaaay later to him by my dad. But you’re American & you followed Prince while growing up, which makes your reviews so interesting. So thank U so much for your work 💜
Man you are awesome and I'm sure if Prince was still with us he would enjoy your work (even though he probably wouldn't admit it) ! I only wish you could interview him ! 🔥👍👏
Been searching for a while but I am ashamed I still don't have this album 😕. Funny but I've heard and know most of these tracks. Don't know how. It's on the list as is 1999 and Purple Rain. Nevermind it will Come 😁. Great review as usual and I love that you give these albums your personal interpretation and a perspective not previously considered by some. Prince's music is setting out what it intended to do. Thank you Prince's Friend.
+B B music is art and art is subjective. That one of my favorite things about Prince, you can take his words and they mean different things to different people.
Prince's Friend Absolutely and that's what makes it so personal and exciting. Your take is elightening and gives an elevated appreciation for the work even more. The wealth of material in front of me is overwhelming sometimes because I want to hear EVERYTHING and I only have 12 albums so far 😳. BTW like that background music it fits perfectly with the review. What is it?
Prince's Friend Prince's Friend I got the album very soon after your review and to my delight I've actually heard most of them before such as Space, Dark and Race. I am obsessed with this album. I think it tells a fascinating story. Love the segues such magical touches (I Wish You Heaven) Looking at the sleeve its atmospheric and revealing about tjings i thought about Prince back then. Didn't get what he was doing then cos there was so little information but i get it now. So now i dont need to feel ashamed anymore 😆👍💜 (btw collection up to 21 and climbing mainly replacing cassettes )
I remember when I got into Prince the first album I bought was Purple Rain and it automatically got me hooked next I bought Controversy and Come and remember listening to this album and I use to think it was a pretty awesome album.

My favs are space and let it go
"I feel like I am going insane" (9 syllable word) in this case. BRILLIANT!
It says he did all instruments. But could he play harp, like this track?
The harp may be a synthesizer. . .
@katygaston8777the harp sounds like a plug-in as in a keyboard
"Come" is criminally underrated, both the song and the album.
It’s kind of insulting that people thought it was just thrown together this album flows from track to track yes it wasn’t the sound of the 90’s but it is honestly one of his best albums numbers don’t represent greatness

Prince's Friend I love your insight on this album I’ll listen to it at that perspective now
Ordered it on the strength of this review
You’re gonna love it
Even his weakest album is better than anything onnthe radio these days
If Come and The Gold Experience were released as a double album it would have been better than Sign o the Times.
Keep up the great work, friend.

Sign o' the times beats anything from the 90s hands down
I second this

this is definitely one of my favourite albums by prince. It's a shame it's not more popular because i think it's gotta be as strong as his more famous stuff.
I've never listened to the album but you did a great job of providing your analysis/synopsis
One of his most underrated albums. It's my "late night" Prince album!
Agreed
3:26-4:15 Timeline (overlaps, parallels intersections, entanglements, hierarchy, power plays, thatchwork, matchmakers, inter-generational and complex trauma, artistic expression)
Thanks for watching!
There's a link in the description to grab a copy if you want. :-)
Come: come and witness the chaos and disorder between Prince and his record company. Not just about sex.
Agreed. Double-entendres are a staple of much of Prince's/O(+>'s work.
@@chj2 he got a lot on vault
@@chj2 he was such a dope writer
i really like this era -- SOOOOO many good songs were recorded during this time (early '93 into late '94) . AWESOME !!!! - i heard EndorphinMachine was supposed to be on this album at one point in time .
My fave era. His most creative, I think.
I'm waiting on the disc now
On the pheromone page on 'Prince Vault': a fan asked where the story/lyrics for the song came from, to which Prince replied:
"Carmen Electra and The Crazy Horse."
Thank you! Loved this review! 💜
Great analysis! Very insightful. This album is criminally underrated in his oeuvre.
Really like your interpretation of the track order and how the songs fit together to tell a story. I never caught that before. It worked on me subconsciously, but never realized why.
It all comes back to Vanity. Now , it makes me think Private Joy was another song written about her.
Cheers!
Great review ! Letitgo my fav, that played on the black radio , my friend reminded me of it
I remember buying this in '94, my first year in College at a Blockbuster Music Store! 😁 I still have it now! Wow! It seems so Long Ago!
It is one of my favorite albums. Space (especially) takes me places. 💜
Received my Come Album today and love it. Been wanting it for ages and also got my Gold album too which I also love. I am a happy lady. I enjoyed listening to your review of Come album. 💜💕💜💕💜💕
I really enjoyed your review of “Come” I agree it is a fantastic album and I listen to it quite a bit.
Thanks so much! Underrated album for sure
We are so lucky! We've found this artist and this album in particular. Many people have'nt yet.
Wow! Thank you for that! We got more reviews coming soon!
this is probably my favorite album. and it sure does remind me of Christmas due to the little jingles in the song!
I like the theory aspect it seems idealism since that was happening the war with WB
maybe it's really the deeper meaning no one ever solved this is really a great review I hope you can touch on the remixes QD3 did let us see your review of that I love the dark feel of the album
you can tell Prince went to underground clubs in London ect maybe even LA to check out the newer sounds to experiment that was emerging the driving electrical dance house music & sprinkling some funk so to speak on a couple of track's not to much but making it digestible for the ear
I can't wait for the Gold Experience review I'm pumped already
Brilliant album, & I agree with your synopsis of what the album represents/means.
Right on Prince's Friend !!!
That’s the way to do it
i always felt that Kenny Kravtiz REALLY ripped off Loose when he did Black Velveteen.
"Dark" is one of my favorites. If I was to make a Prince compilation playlist, this would definitely be on it.
Love that song too
It was great album..I brought the album back in 95 when it was released or 94..I loved it.The album accompanied me during my tour with a Gospel Group back in 95.
1 in the UK too.
that ruined my childhood lol
Ashley White "you are the reason there's bass in my boom...you are the reason I'm high"
loving your channel man love prince
This is one of my fav albums. I have been on it since Thursday. It was calling me this weekend. OMG!!! And I love there are different versions of both Come and Space. 💜💜💜💜
And Letitgo!
@@PrincesFriend Yes, thanks. Cavi Street.
@@PrincesFriend I think there is another one too.
"Loose" reminds me of " My Name is Prince" kind of vibe. 💜✌💜😎
That was a good review. I like when you said take the woman out and make it his record label, I never looked at it that way. But I could so see that.
Love your breakdown here. I think Prince as a Dream Weaver works wonderfully as a description as well. Makes you want to figure it all out.
Love your review on Prince love your t-shirt happy TBT to you hope you have a blessed day my friend 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜😁😁😁😁😁
You are allways on point with your reviews. I love it.
I just listened to this one. It's my new favorite Prince album. ❤️
It has a lot of wonderful cuts on there.
One of my favorites albums!!
You're right on point with your theory ... All though I didn't care for the COME album too much ... I felt our friend at a critical crossroads and he just wanted to move on. Thank goodness for the track "Let it go," at least we had one jam to funk to :-)
I love everything about the album 💜💜💜💜💜💜
Come is such a dominating song & then to end it with Orgasm....the album is bookended with sex.
DUDE
You just blew my mind with the hypothesis that the entire album was more about his record label …rather then sex….
That’s what I’m here for. 💜💜
💜💜
Thank you. ✌💜✌💜✌
ive watched loads your vids today being a muscian as i am wow you know your mj and princd stuff
If you like "Space" you have to listen to the Universal Love mix of it. It has different lyrics and is a superior version IMO.
Oh definitely! Check out my review o the whole Space maxi-single
Only listened to this album in its entirety the other day. Loved it from beginning to end. Your theory about the album is incredible! Never thought of it that way!
Which theory?
Well... about “Come” being the most explicit Prince track... on Dirty Mind you had “Head” & “Sister”, talk about explicit!
Pheromone is a great track.
I love Space. It's a beautful music. It's super sexy.
So thank U so much for your work 💜
I think that’s right. Reaching a spiritual climax in a way. Cheers!
OMG ive been waiting for this .... one of my favourite albums - just stunning/atmospheric/sexy/dangerous/passionate/daring......thank you for this
Man you are awesome and I'm sure if Prince was still with us he would enjoy your work (even though he probably wouldn't admit it) ! I only wish you could interview him ! 🔥👍👏
That would have been awesome!
Outstanding review!💜
I want this album because all I have is the song Papa and Let It Go
Oh here we go. We’ll get through this together. We all know this was beyond off because of the record label.
What is it?
+B B thanks! Changed the background music a bit ago and plan on switching soon again.
And 12 is a great start!
I remember Papa made me tear up the first time I heard it.
