Actually squirrel meat is a reference to squirrels humping they go at it pretty CRAZY. I heard it discussed in a couple interviews CAT was asked about it specifically. But people in the South do eat some squirrel meat now lol.
I’m hoping people caught my use of photos in this review. None of them are happy and definitely no smiles. They are all of Prince in contemplation, angry, or seemingly depressed. I think that fits the tone of the album really well.
I liked your use of the photos, they matched the mood to each song perfectly. I could tell you really took your time putting this all together. Thank you!
Prince's Friend Prince was mainly offended by rap because Skooly D had a rap/anti rock song/video out at the time called No More Rock n Roll where he dissed Prince in a intro at the beginning of the video.....fyi it was not a good song
Actually, the Black Album is one of my favorite Prince albums. And I say that because, I feel like it’s gritty and dark. And to be honest, I kinda like that. And the grooves are amazing. I feel like it completely contrast to the Love Sexy album. I like how a Prince’s albums can completely change styles, images, vision, and vibe in very short amount of time. But I do prefer the Love Sexy album though.
So I 🤔 3 and a half stars ⭐️ is harsh. This album was pure genius. Knowing Prince, I truly believe that this was his playing puppet master with his fans and the label. This album was the other side of the coin to Love Sexy. The Love Sexy Cover is pure white = Pure The Black Album Cover is Black = Dark During that Love Sexy Era, any photo time period was very dark. He was caught barely smiled on photo. Just look at the concert book or the concert as a whole, it was like he was caught between his two spiritual worlds. Reminds me of the Purple Rain Concert as it’s relates spirituality. It’s my feeling that Prince made this Album for his Prince Friends who needed some of his more dark, edgy stuff. Where’s Love Sexy was the balance of the two. As I quote “ They love it when I’m bad.” Prince loved the controversy. But that’s just my opinion, Who really cares.😂
I love The Black Album. It's one of my favorite Prince albums precisely because it's so weird and so different from what he usually delivers. Bob George, Superfunkycalifragisexy and Rock Hard In a Funky Place are indispensable tracks. I suspect part of the reason you felt weird about this review is because you did the album in its official release order. I don't think of The Black Album as a 1994 album. To me, it exists firmly between Sign and Lovesexy, as sort of a weird, dark sister album to Lovesexy.
'When 2 R in Love' is one of my top five favorite Prince songs. First heard it on Lovesexy. That one and 'I Wish U Heaven' were the big big standouts on that album for me.
I have no issue with Prince giving rappers the bird. Sheila E. said when she did Krush Groove they were so rude to her, she almost quit the movie. They didn't like ANYONE from Prince's camp. Many forget that he was considered too fem or girly and the rappers didn't like him---even into the '90s they made fun of him. So if he had a beef with rappers. . .so be it. There's not one rapper who's talent is even on the same level as Prince.
I love the Black Album! For me, it's a continuation of Sign o' the Times, which is probably my favorite overall Prince album. Many great tunes. An excellent album.
The Black Album is a masterpiece. It's the most sought after Prince album ever. When it was reported that he didn't want it purchased and had it removed from the shelves it made us want it even more. It just sounds like underground Funk. Like he disappeared off the face of the earth and no one knew where he was and then all of a sudden you see gigantic speakers rising from out of the ground in the four corners of the earth tall as the sky. And Le Grind with that bumping beat starts up and you wonder what and who this is. And then he starts to sing... That's how my mind feels about this album. 5 star underground, hard edged Funk. 💜💜💜
I was excited by the mystery surrounding the album, I bought into the hype back then, What really got me convinced to own a copy of the album was an episode of a Nickelodeon show called Kids Court, on this show was an adult host who would bring kinds on a courtroom set to sit as a jury in order to debate issues, on one episode, the subject was bootlegs and wether or not it was morally right to own one, the bootleg up for debate was The Black Album. I don't remember the outcome, but the copy the host had was a vinyl owned by Paul McCartney. I was floored, If a former BEATLE owns one then this must be the most epic album to exist. I bought a tape copy in 1994, I liked the album, don't see negative aspects in almost any of the tracks except Bob George, I would play Cindy C all the time, my step brother heard me playing that song late one night, ran into my bedroom and busted a move, went crazy, so I think the album is extremely positive. The Kids Court story is real, no b.s
I bought this on CD all down-low secretive from a record store that had it behind the counter and was very insistent that I not tell anyone where I purchased it. I had to ask for it and at first they said no but I was 16 and very eager and the rumor was that they had it. It was $30 in 1988 so that would be exactly $63.45 (yay for inflation calculator). Can you imagine buying a CD for over $60? It was also not very good quality but I was able to cobble together my own Camille album mixtape. This was pre-internet so I had to guess at the track list and I was mostly right. Thank you Prince's Friend for another great review. "I hate to watch an erection go to waste" or something. Hilarious.
Same, I also bought the bootleg (vinyl) in '88 or '89 in a shop in Eindhoven (The Netherlands) for 120 Guilders, which would roughly estimated would be about a hundred dollars at the time. They also had Christopher Tracy's Parade but I couldn't afford both. I aquired CTP much later but I think I made the right choice at the time.
When 21 years old I backpacked (via jet) to N.Y City it was June 1988. One night I took the subway to St.Mark's Place. The market would still be trading after midnight. That night I bought myself a bootleg cassette version of The Black Album. This was stolen many years later, by someone I once considered my friend. You know who you are!? Well nice to see the Black album is on this channel.
Great to see you do this album. Superfunkycalifragisexy is amazing and west Compton is a really good instrumental but I love all the album! Always though Le Grind was a nice comparison piece with Housequake but that's just me. Keep up the good work.
To me the Black album felt somewhat like a bootleg of his own creation. I think this was a bit of the result of losing the Time as an outlet for the darker or humorous tracks that he came up with, and at this point he no longer had that. Sheila’s influence is all over this one as well. I think much of it is just him/them having fun. I have also heard that Sheila named “2 Nigs” as well. I think he pulled it cause he didn’t think that listeners would get the humor of it, and there would be a backlash that he would have to deal with and repair. Super funky album, but to me it seems without a focus like his other albums from this time. I got my hands on a good copy of it in 88/89, and for me it was refreshing to see that he hadn’t lost the touch of the old school funk. Bob George was my fav cause of the humor.
I like the context; the way you carefully and with balance offer your response the The Black Album. Great reviews. Thanks a lot for the time and effort you take in to these videos Prince's Friend...It's my 'me time' ;-) Gracias! Tony
💜 I first listened to this album last year. Way late I know. I was so curious about it and felt a lot of anticipation for what it was all about to have pulled it from the shelves and I have to say I really enjoyed the whole experience. Again, he revealed another side of himself to us in a very unique way which I find exciting and intriguing. I appreciate his creative side so much! This just adds something more to his legacy as the GOAT!!
This album was very underground, the funk and slow cut is very freaky, knew some djs who had the vinyl and their parties on throwdown in 1988, then was going to buy the vinyl then found out gone til 1994 it was re-released, got it with Come CD,,,Come was hardcore and still hardcore also Prince did an opera cut, which I like the guitar version of Come with Vanity_R.I.P. on the background vocals was hot, it is wild how both albums influenced today hip hop, rap, r and b that is really funk genres,,, my favorite cut of Black Album is hard to say, I will just like the entire album
I think this was truly a revelation period for Prince when he put this LP together...he was upset about a lot of things going on in his life that he couldn’t seem to get control over...this LP is clearly a break from his old persona...
Oddly enough I got a bootleg copy of the album. I was working for a label in NY. (1994) I think. Bob George is about Nelson George.(a writer for billboard & vibe magazine )the label frown upon me owning a bootleg cd. I have no idea where it went and I never got 2 listen 2 it in its entirety. They made me feel as if was tabu. Glad u could review. I only enjoyed 1 song and the cd disappeared
Great album! All songs are great and interesting I listen to, especially “Rock hard in a Funky Place.” It’s a phenomenal album and the cover is cool too even though it’s in black color background. Cool review. I give it a thumbs up. 👍🏻😄
Fun fact: there was going to be a compilation album called 'When 2 R In Love', which would be a ballad compilation that-as we all know-went onto be shelved. What is worth wondering about was whether Warner Bros was going to consider crediting the song to The Black Album or Lovesexy. I want to say that Lovesexy would probably be credited due to Prince's liking more for that album, but technically it would be Black Album's credit due for the fact that the song was on it first. What do you think, PF? Would it b credited to Lovesexy or Black Album?
I knew a Warner bros rep who gave me his PROMO copy of the album. It was shrink sealed . I then sold my first car and spent the the money on buying another copy from a dealer for £900 ,this copy I could and did play. The re release issue I play a lot today . It ranks up there in my top 5 prince albums . Pure funk ,pure naughtiness, and I 💜 It !
When the Black Album was in record stores, they didn't keep them on the floor. They kept them behind the counter. The only way you could get one, you had to ask for it.
I actually don’t find The Black Album all that dark in subject matter as a whole. Outside of Bob George and Dead On It, I don’t think it’s negative really. I was expecting darker tbh. I think if the album was called something else, (I would’ve liked the title The Funk Bible as mentioned in Le Grind) then ppl would’ve had a different perception of it. But I think seeing the black cover, knowing the backstory just already sets a dark tone. I agree with your review of it being middle of the road, it’s not bad but it’s not great or something that I’d revisit often. My favorites songs outside of when 2 r in love are Cindy C (my fav), Le Grind, and Superfunkycalifragisexy. Overall I just prefer the first half of the album to the second half. Great review!
Great insights. I don’t think The Black Album was any darker or angrier than his other albums. I think it’s just the power of suggestion with the title and Prince saying he was in a dark place when he made it. If he had titles the album “Superfunkycalifragisexy” or “Funk Bible” and stood by it, saying he was really proud of the work he and the band did on it, The Black Album wouldn’t have an ominous reputation.
I liked your perspective. I feel the same way about the Black Album. I think Black was 1 of those albums that I wasnt mature enough the 1st time i heard it...like Lovesexy. Now im tempted to pay $50 on Amazon. Warner should just be the vampires they are and release it digitally. Anyway, great 2 c the latest review. ✌🏾and b wild!
Thanks for this review Prince Friend. I have fond memories of the 80's associated with this album. I remember hearing this Funky Album back in 1988. Back then it was unobtainable to most Prince fans. I had a DJ friend make a Cassette Tape copy of this fabulous album from a bootleg he managed to obtain. It was a much sought after vinyl album and was a legendary golden nugget. It held cult status until limited commercial release in 1994. I still hold this album up as fabulously entertaining and essential listening. Any self respecting Prince fan should have a copy of this album in their collection. This album still holds up. It really does show Prince genius as a composer and musician. I love 'Rock Hard In A Funky Place', 'SuperFunkyCaliFragiSexy', I also love 'Bob George' and 'Dead On It'. In my humble opinion this album channels George Clinton of Parliament/Funkadelic fame. Prince takes the Funk to another level. Love this album, Love the Funk in it.
Agree it holds up but in such a weird way for me and my ear. Like I totally get why he pulled it back. Lovesexy is definitely the superior album, in my opinion. Thanks for the comment, by the way
@@PrincesFriend .Yes The Black Album, it really is very left field, although, Prince knew exactly what he was doing. Prince was a very spiritual man, you acknowledged this fact in one of your You Tube publications, Prince was a modern day sage. Everything has a positive and a negative element, a duality, the Yin and the Yang, the Black and the White, the Dark and the Light, the Day and the Night and so on and so Forth. The Black Album is twinned with the Lovesexy Album. The one album 'Lovesexy' was easily obtainable, the other album 'Black album' was hidden and difficult to obtain. As a Student of Prince, it is a must to have 'The Black album' alongside the Lovesexy album. Both albums were originally released in 1988. The Black album content of songs focus on the darker aspects of human personality such as Anger, Aggression and Violence, Greed, Sexuality and Lust. The Lovesexy Album content of songs focus on 'Love' as a pure force for Good (This is why the Lovesexy album was allegedly Prince interpretation of his perspective of a 'Gospel' message). The Lovesexy album various songs were morphed into One Continuous Song as 'Eye Know'. Thanks again for the review.
I recall buying my first copy of Black Album CD in 1988 which was actually a bootleg copy of the promo version of the album. A funny detail is that it contains an extra track 'Old Friends 4 Sale'. I do not know a reason for it being included. Anyone?
I totally agree with your conclusion. I give it between 3 and 3.25 stars. The album has a mystique about it because of all the things that happened at the time, and then again in 1994, but the music doesn’t really hold up to that mystique, in my opinion. And especially when this album came in between Sign O’ the Times and my absolute favorite Prince album - and one of my favorites by anyone -, Lovesexy.
This was interesting because I didn’t consider it “dark” and never understood why he pulled it. It’s not as good as Lovesexy but I was one of those people who had to have it. Where the album lacks for me is in the beginning 3 tracks but earned my money with Rock Hard In A Funky Place.
Had a couple bootlegs of this around 1990 or so and always loved it. Never heard any anger here. I listen to lots of angry music and there's nothing negative here. Bob George is just comedy. One of the bootlegs I have includes some bonus tracks that I haven't caught elsewhere.
I love this album for the context it gives to his next moves. This is the breaking point, the turning point, from here he spawned his lovesexy concept and album. I like lovesexy and this album both even more because they both exist and they are each others reason to exist. I also think the bucket of squirrel meat line is one of those weird concepts he used, just like horny pony. Its used in SOTT as well and the line is also in the final credits of the SOTT concert movie.
I never really bought this album, even though I only heard When 2 R In Love. Never knew that this release was only on Warner Bros not under Paisley Park. Especially while Sign o the Times still going strong and Lovesexy ahead of release in May 1988. There were times that the record stores had this hidden behind the counter or in the rear of the r&b Soul music category of the store due to its explicit advisory. Got to find this one
I loved loved loved The Black LP. Funky Sexy Fun Prince raw,, the way I liked him in from 70-80's. The LP did not feel negative to me at all!! It was loose, Fun & Free!! All the rules went out the window on the Black LP. It Kind of reminds me of a later LP 'Exodus' or Vanity 6's first album. Just Raw Sexy Funk!!!
I do like the black album, but lovesexy was amazing. I can't say I'm sorry it never had it's original release as lovesexy is a must have. I did buy the black album on cd in 94'
Bob George sounded crazy when my uncle bought this bootleg vinyl from Eat more records back in the day of 1989 and I was even in SHOCK as a little boy that it was Prince. It was definitely very DARK.
Every time I go record shopping, I look for The Black Album. They never have it. UNTIL yesterday, when I walked into Lyle's Place in Victoria, British Columbia. I nearly shit myself, I was so excited. Then I saw the price. I can't swing 150 bucks for a CD. Sorry. I know what you're thinking: "150 Canadian has to be like 20 bucks American, right?" No, unfortunately; it's still damn expensive.
It makes me crazy when people say “I don’t like certain Prince music because it sounds angry, it’s not the happy uplifting Prince”... I think it’s often forgotten that he was a human being with multifaceted emotions... perhaps at times tired of being everybody’s everything. Since he wasn’t the type to “talk about his issues”, where else but his music to express his anger, his resentment, his hurt? Where as the everyday person would just shout it out ... For me, The Black Album is his most stripped down emotional piece, besides “Wally”. That’s why he probably didn’t want it released...
I hear you! It's sum MJ fans that didn't like History for the same reasons. Either way Lovesexy was still the better album, even tho people had mixed feelings about that one too in the beginning lol!
The original release date was to be Dec 8 1987 (midnight). Dead On It was never intended to insult great rap/rappers, hence "the only good rapper is one that's dead on it". 500 copies were pressed for shipping. All but promo copies and mailed copies were scrapped. You had to live in the era to understand the album and the chaos surrounding it.
Have to go back to this one. I remember enjoying Bob George and obviously when 2 r in love. The rest don't seen to have grabbed me enough to repeatedly listen. Maybe because for me I got into Prince roundabout 1992 and this whole period (appx 1989 - 1997) is my favourite.
This is My third favorite of all the albums behind Purple rain and Dirty mind actually picked this up on vinyl way back in the day not knowing what the heck it was in one of them old record stores that sold bootlegs sometimes
Hey I’m working on a video about the black album as well and I was wondering if I could borrow The clip in where you spoke about the backstory for Cindy C i’ll credit you and everything don’t worry.
the black album is a funky album. the drums, bass & guitar licks are all on point. I could hear it all way back in 1988 when I bought a hiss filled vinyl bootleg for $50 Australian (which was a lot of money back then for a 15 year old school boy)
I know a place around the corner from where I work that has the black album CD with the 1999 era cover with two bonus songs " In all my Dreams" and "Others here with us", I think.....
When 2 R in Love- is a great very beautiful song. I remember reading somewhere that he asked a close music comrades if he should try "rapping" + was advised not to. "Bob George" is very dark- in the music + dark lyrics.
Lovesexy period, so it can't be bad. It actually sounds a lot similar. Maybe because of the band? It's not my favourite album, but liked it at the time. A lot more than Graffiti Bridge, by the way.
I’ve read a lot of the comments here and I see how most people here rave about the Black Album. I, however, am not one of them. Despite a couple of cool tracks, I think this has to be one of Prince’s weakest albums. I remember buying a bootleg copy in 1988 and it was hella cool because of how in demand it was due to it’s “not release.” I liked a few of the songs but now upon reflection years later, I wonder if this album’s release/not release mythology was really just a PR stunt. Think about it. Coming after of the excellent SOTT, this album sounds like a collection of demo songs not originally meant for public release (like it’s a bunch of in-house, in-the-know-only songs) but rather for Prince’s friends and musical associates. And coming before the well-thought out and beautiful “Lovesexy” album only illustrates my point further that the Black Album was just okay at best. And After WB released the brilliant double album SOTT in the spring of 1987, Prince toured Europe that spring (and he was supposed to tour the US in the fall but he changed his mind and released that concert film instead) and Prince’s “U Got the Look” video was killing it at that year’s VMA awards in Sept, why would WB agree to release a new album that winter, as some commenters have stated? Come to think of it, after “U Got the Look” blew up over the music video channels that summer, Prince released the video for “I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man” later that fall. It just doesn’t make sense to me that WB would allow Prince to release a new album that December. The whispered talk about the upcoming Black Album was actually brilliant marketing that seemed to take on a life of its own. It was supposed to be Uber-funky and a real return to Prince’s funk roots. Then allegedly, at the last minute, with all those records already printed and ready to be shipped to stores, Prince has a change of heart. He orders the halt of its distribution, although allegedly some thousands of copies had already been shipped out. He then orders the remainder of the albums not shipped be destroyed so that this wicked album never sees the light of day. Don’t buy the Black Album, he urges the public. Now, does Prince actually have the authority to tell WB to not only stop shipment of the Black Album but also to destroy all inventory on hand? If so, those actions alone would have costed Prince millions of dollars as WB would have held him financially liable for those costs/losses. And one more thing to consider: Before any major artist album is released to the public, or even shipped to stores, it is standard that a song is chosen by the artist/record label, weeks before the album release date, to be the lead single. Hell, they even record a music video to help promote the song and hence the album. Do tell, what was the lead single from The Black Album? Uh huh. I smell a rat.
I have always thought that Prince did this as a marketing scheme. Considering he performed a few of the songs during the Lovesexy. (Le Grind I don't think was ever performed live) Black had such a crazy buzz. I remember all the kids in my school passing the tape around (not an official but bootleg copies) by the time Lovesexy came about we were too into Black to care. I don't this would have been a hit LP had it been released (I love it) but at the time the new jack swing and hip hop were coming. Prince was not doing the most innovative things, he has settled into his sound by that point. Again I love the Black Album except '2 Ni*S United for Compton'
Also you didn't mention :all my dreams!:? Me personally give it a 5 star loved it bought it at a hard to find record shop, played it constantly it's everything you said and more!
In my journey of discovering Prince music, I've heard songs from the Black Album. To some degree, I understand why Prince pulled this. I'm surprised that he spent so much time on it, because it didn't have too much direction to me. It all seemed like kinda like the first things that came to Prince's mind, he wrote a song about it. I do like the funkiness of the album, and the LoveSexy band was included. Dead on It, while its a funny track, he is making a mockery of rap, I'm pretty sure some rappers were pissed off if they heard this. Hip-Hop/Rap being in its first decade of its inception in 1988, I dont know if he thought it would have longevity. This was the start of his opinions on Hip-Hop music going forward. When 2 R in Love was perfect for Lovesexy, I always link it to that album, it fits. Rock Hard in a Funky Place is the best track, very Camille-esque. As an angry album, I heard Prince talk about how he uses his anger with humor, so any negative feelings he had, I think they were done in a humorous way. I didnt get an angry vibe from this album. I heard the Bob George skit in the LoveSexy tour and it was super hilarious. LeGrind, Dead on It, Superfunkycalifragisexy, When 2 R in Love, Rock Hard in a Funky Place are the standouts to me. I think The Black Album as a whole was good for what it was, I dont think its enough for me to listen to it as much. But, to think if he didnt decide to pull it, we would've gotten the ultra positive and lively LoveSexy.
cassandra bradley Its a combination of the names: Nelson George, who supposedly said Prince was losing his urban pull and one of Prince's old managers, I believe Bob Cavallo.
sir jay Ha , ha. And I keep seeing this magazines for sale now on the Paisley 5 and Dime in FB. Guess I should invest and become knowledgeable. Sniggles.
@@PrincesFriend Actually I watched your video twice. You did a good job explaining it (Wendy, Lisa, Susanna not being in his life, as well as the Revolution...I think him and Susanna breaking up had a profound effect on him. Also being anti rap or maybe it was more anti gangsta rap etc etc). I sitll dont see it being that dark as a fan, I should say, Le Grind isnt a dark song for example...however it was a different time then. I will watch the video you suggested. I am trying to get caught up on them. I was in a "Black Album" mood so I watched this video today.

and let me also add the song Dead on it there's a verse when he says I'm badder than the wicked witch now the wicked witch part is actually a sample from one of Shelia E's song
I agree with u on that about Dead On It I think he was dissing rappers like Biz Markie like u said rappers who didn't make sense back in 88 u had good rappers like Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, Eric B & Rakim, Run DMC, Kool Moe Dee etc but agree with u that that's probably one of the reasons why he didn't release The Black Album back in 88 bcuz he didn't want hip hop artists to think he was dissing the whole genre
I dug it a lot too, but I know lots of rappers who were offended by it. But you're right, it was super hammed up. few gangstas have a sense of humor though. lol
@@PrincesFriend lol yea but u noticed later in Prince's career on the albums Diamonds and Pearls and The Love Symbol Album Prince as a few songs where he's rapping
I really enjoy your review on the Black Album. Now I understand the meaning behind it. Thank You 🙏 P.F. Did you cover the New Power Soul 1998 Album? What’s up with the blank tracks? Help!?🤔 Have a Blessed Day.
I just think this album was him in a much darker place and for that it’s still good but as fans it’s not what we we have grown with his positive and loving spiritual I would think.
I don't understand Warner Brothers and their thinking in 1987. On the one hand, they were against the release of Crystal Ball as a triple album, but they were going to allow the Black Album to be released in late 1987.
I bought this in 1994 when it came out (UK). Didn't know is was withdrawn until years later. I have quoted the line "that skinny mutha fucka with the high voice?" when someone said when liked Prince, obviously they didn't know this album ;) Bob George , Cindy C and Superfunkycalifragisexy I played all the time but it was weird getting old material when I thought I was getting a new album.
This is an interesting review. Spare me if I’m wrong but I thought Prince said he was doing Ecstasy at the time with Cat Glover and this made him depressed, and so he decided to scrap the album and move onwards. The tracks sound like a cross between Sign of theTimes and Lovesexy. I’d like to hear Cindy C, I heard she completely ignored Prince back in the day, don’t know why he was bothered about such a conceited woman, even her ex husband said she loved herself lol. Like the sound of the funky tracks and I would like to play the whole album
I had a cruddy bootleg tape of this for decades. When I finally bought the CD...............wow! One of my favourite Prince albums. I wonder if you've reviewed 'Come' by Prince. A much maligned album on initial release, but I thought it was a great album.
According to Susan Rogers none of the songs on the Black album were ever meant to be on an album. They did the songs for a Shiela E. Birthday party just for fun.
I love your review and take on this, but what's not stated is a very specific reason he did not like this album, and it has everything to do with when it was released. Just think in terms of "What if?" What if this album was released in 1987 as opposed to 1994? There's very esoteric meaning behind it that's never been discussed.

Thank you!
Prince's Friend btw... I am like #100
Prince's Friend Prince was mainly offended by rap because Skooly D had a rap/anti rock song/video out at the time called No More Rock n Roll where he dissed Prince in a intro at the beginning of the video.....fyi it was not a good song

This album was the other side of the coin to Love Sexy.
The Love Sexy Cover is pure white = Pure
The Black Album Cover is Black = Dark
During that Love Sexy Era, any photo time period was very dark.
As I quote “ They love it when I’m bad.”
Prince loved the controversy.
But that’s just my opinion, Who really cares.😂
I still don't like it.
Yeah, what is funny though, is he makes fun of rappers, then 3 years later, Prince starts rapping on many of his songs like Get off.
Wow that's new to me I heard that Prince came to the set of Krush Groove I wondered how they treated him
I love the Black Album!
"Don't buy The Black Album. I'm sorry."
I never even noticed that on the alphabet street video before reading about that 😂
I was excited by the mystery surrounding the album, I bought into the hype back then, What really got me convinced to own a copy of the album was an episode of a Nickelodeon show called Kids Court, on this show was an adult host who would bring kinds on a courtroom set to sit as a jury in order to debate issues, on one episode, the subject was bootlegs and wether or not it was morally right to own one, the bootleg up for debate was The Black Album.
Love it! Enough said!
Absolutely agreed
The Black Album was an angry album, but with all the epiphany talk he still played 2 tracks from that album live in the Lovesexy tour in 1988
To me the Black album felt somewhat like a bootleg of his own creation.
Thanks a lot for the time and effort you take in to these videos Prince's Friend...It's my 'me time' ;-)
Gracias!
Happy to see another album review I can’t wait for the later stuff, 2010 3121 gold experience, rave un2, and especially lotusflo3r
We gotta get through the 90s first. ;)
I think this was truly a revelation period for Prince when he put this LP together...he was upset about a lot of things going on in his life that he couldn’t seem to get control over...this LP is clearly a break from his old persona...
I've been waiting for this review for a while!!! Squirrel Meat!!!!
The wait is over. I'll never forget hearing this for the first time omw home from school. Bobbing my head the entire time.
Pure funk ,pure naughtiness,and I 💜 It !
When the Black Album was in record stores, they didn't keep them on the floor. They kept them behind the counter. The only way you could get one, you had to ask for it.
My second all time favorite Prince album!
What’s your #1?
SOTT
BTW....Ijust got hip to you and you are AWESOME! I'm a night owl so I've been watching you for the past two nights.
Oh thanks so much! Glad you’re enjoying!
💜💜
Great insights. I don’t think The Black Album was any darker or angrier than his other albums. I think it’s just the power of suggestion with the title and Prince saying he was in a dark place when he made it. If he had titles the album “Superfunkycalifragisexy” or “Funk Bible” and stood by it, saying he was really proud of the work he and the band did on it, The Black Album wouldn’t have an ominous reputation.
I love this album so much for the funk and the feel of it all despite the slight negative vibe💜
Great way to look at it! #studentofprince
I totally love the Black Album, it’s one I most absolutely favorite Albums. It’s so funky
Luved ur review (as always) , not too good , not too bad! Keep up the good work! 💜
My uncle used to always keep it in a brown paper bag and it was so fun looking with the orange label on the vinyl album itself.
I need to look into this album thank you fur the review 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜😀😀😀😀😀
I 💜 this Album, which I have
Awesome review
Always found Dead on it amusing because it was the song that followed Cindy C, a song which had rap verse from Kat [pre-Alphabet street] on it...
Yes! Another album review 😃 can't wait for the gold experience
Yes, I am panting to hear that review. I have not heard "Endorphine Machine" in years.
Yassss
Finally, one of my fav albums
Great album, love it! Loving the bootleg even more because.. "Others here with us" was on it. This track just creeps the shit out of me.👻
It makes me crazy when people say “I don’t like certain Prince music because it sounds angry, it’s not the happy uplifting Prince”...
I have a copy of Prnice "Black Album" and want to sell it. Any advise?
Prince: “Don’t buy my black album”
Everyone else: “Too late we still gonna remember it’s existence”
This is My third favorite of all the albums behind Purple rain and Dirty mind actually picked this up on vinyl way back in the day not knowing what the heck it was in one of them old record stores that sold bootlegs sometimes
Hey I’m working on a video about the black album as well and I was wondering if I could borrow The clip in where you spoke about the backstory for Cindy C i’ll credit you and everything don’t worry.
a small clip? yeah! go for it!
@@PrincesFriend yea it’s brief and thank you
the black album is a funky album. the drums, bass & guitar licks are all on point. I could hear it all way back in 1988 when I bought a hiss filled vinyl bootleg for $50 Australian (which was a lot of money back then for a 15 year old school boy)
Great review!
I know a place around the corner from where I work that has the black album CD with the 1999 era cover with two bonus songs " In all my Dreams" and "Others here with us", I think.....
Oh wow!
When 2 R in Love- is a great very beautiful song. I remember reading somewhere that he asked a close music comrades if he should try "rapping"
+ was advised not to. "Bob George" is very dark- in the music + dark lyrics.
I personally like Prince's raps, but not everyone agrees with me. lol
Lovesexy period, so it can't be bad. It actually sounds a lot similar. Maybe because of the band? It's not my favourite album, but liked it at the time. A lot more than Graffiti Bridge, by the way.
Bob George is my joint! I love it! So funky :)
He also wrote "Don't buy the black album" on the pamphlet to the "o(+>"-album.
Oh wow! I'll have to look for it again
@@PrincesFriend It's under "The Max";)
This CD should've been released after Sign O the Times and 6 months before Lovesexy. This CD was the bomb!!
Right
Also you didn't mention :all my dreams!:? Me personally give it a 5 star loved it bought it at a hard to find record shop, played it constantly it's everything you said and more!
I don't understand why I would mention All My Dreams in this video, since it wasn't on the Black Album.
Yes all my dreams was the song before old friends for sale, on the album that came out in 87? Right?
Old friends for sale was also not on the album. Not the one I have at least
Man I still have mine.
I heard Bob George is a real person who is a music critic and criticized him and still lives in NYC. But who knows.
cassandra bradley Its a combination of the names: Nelson George, who supposedly said Prince was losing his urban pull and one of Prince's old managers, I believe Bob Cavallo.
sir jay Now that makes sense. It helps so much to chat with others in this group who know. So much more than I do.
cassandra bradley aw ty..I'm just old prince fan, learned all my stuff from Uptown magazine and Kurt Loder.
sir jay Ha , ha. And I keep seeing this magazines for sale now on the Paisley 5 and Dime in FB. Guess I should invest and become knowledgeable. Sniggles.
So he's Billy Jack bitch?
Bob George a classic must have
I wonder why he thought it was so dark? I didnt get that vibe. "When 2 R In Love" was always my favorite.
I thought I did a good job explaining that. If not, check out the larger Lovesexy/TBA discussion I had with Chris Lacy
So I 🤔 3 and a half stars ⭐️ is harsh.
This album was pure genius. Knowing Prince, I truly believe that this was his playing puppet master with his fans and the label.
This album was the other side of the coin to Love Sexy.
The Love Sexy Cover is pure white = Pure
The Black Album Cover is Black = Dark
During that Love Sexy Era, any photo time period was very dark.
As I quote “ They love it when I’m bad.”
Prince loved the controversy.
But that’s just my opinion, Who really cares.😂
Track 2. Cindy C👌👌👌👌, love it just the way it is..
I love the Black Album.
and let me also add the song Dead on it there's a verse when he says I'm badder than the wicked witch now the wicked witch part is actually a sample from one of Shelia E's song
Exactly!
@@PrincesFriend honestly as hip hop fan I like Dead On It Prince went ham on that song lol
I dug it a lot too, but I know lots of rappers who were offended by it. But you're right, it was super hammed up. few gangstas have a sense of humor though. lol
@@PrincesFriend lol yea but u noticed later in Prince's career on the albums Diamonds and Pearls and The Love Symbol Album Prince as a few songs where he's rapping
yeah, because he didn't really have a problem with them. it was more lashing out than anything.
I really enjoy your review on the Black Album. Now I understand the meaning behind it. Thank You 🙏 P.F. Did you cover the New Power Soul 1998 Album? What’s up with the blank tracks? Help!?🤔 Have a Blessed Day.
We’re going in order of release so 1998 is a few albums away
I just think this album was him in a much darker place and for that it’s still good but as fans it’s not what we we have grown with his positive and loving spiritual I would think.
I don't understand Warner Brothers and their thinking in 1987. On the one hand, they were against the release of Crystal Ball as a triple album, but they were going to allow the Black Album to be released in late 1987.
I didn't think you would get a chance to actually review this. Well I'm glad I was wrong.
I finally got around to it, but it was a difficult one for reasons I talk about in the video. :)
Prince's Friend I share the same thoughts as you when I first listened to it. Yeah I don't belive its a bad ablum but not one of his best.
I bought this in 1994 when it came out (UK). Didn't know is was withdrawn until years later.
I have quoted the line "that skinny mutha fucka with the high voice?" when someone said when liked Prince, obviously they didn't know this album ;)
Bob George , Cindy C and Superfunkycalifragisexy I played all the time but it was weird getting old material when I thought I was getting a new album.
I have a question are you going to do a video of the cd beautiful strange?
Possibly. We’re not quite there yet (since we go in order)
He loves that pony reference lol Prince always cracks me up haha had a good sense of humor.
most definitely! Horny Pony probably my favorite.
Lol now I gotta run and tell my momma bout that! 😂😂😂😂
and while ya at it, tell ya papa bout this!!!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Where do i find it its not on spotify
Not there. Prince hated the album so there’s a reason it’s hard to find. He didn’t want it out on the market ever
Are you kidding me LeGrind & Cindy C is off the hook always play it along with Life Can Be So Nice.
Love Bob George. The Lovesexy tour was great!
Prince did the right thing by releasing Lovesexy album instead cuz its definitely a better album.
No argument here
You forgot old friends for sale, one of my favorites!
How did I forget it? I’m confused.
My favorite songs Cindy C. (so funny song) Superfunkycalifragisexy, (Cool track) and Rock hard in funky place!! ♥♥♥♥♥
John Gatling So are you going to actually say what is not stated and talk about what is not discussed?
Bob George is a beyond random song
