Used to do all my exercises to this song. It's from the movie The Jazz Singer. The old man you see plays his dad. That is Lawrence Olivier. ❤❤❤❤❤ He wrote it in tribute to his grandmother who came to America.
It’s actually a remake of the 1927 version which starred Al Jolson and was semi autobiographical. It’s the first talking picture, although there were some scenes that were silent. Neil Diamond is from Brooklyn and is Jewish but his father wasn’t a cantor.
Please react to Neil’s duet with Shirley Bassey…Play Me. That sparkling red outfit…Diamond necklace and melting adoring gazes. Shirley was asked upfront she fell in love with Neil…she said she fell in love with his Diamond necklace. She can have the necklace!🔥❤️💎
This is from a movie. The Jazz Singer. Neil starred in it. It was amazing! It also starred Lucille Ball’s daughter, Lucie Arnaz, along with the great Lawrence Olivier. The music in the movie was SO great!
Coming home from desert storm in 1991 , they played this song when my ship USS Saratoga past the rock of Gibraltar into the Atlantic ocean head back to MayPort Florida. I didn't realize how much I truly love this country till that moment.

You're right about both. Neil Diamond IS a total showman. But not quite this glam. This clip IS from a movie. The Jazz Singer (1980). I haven't seen it since I was a kid at camp, but as I recall Neil Diamond plays a young man who is the son of a cantor. His father wants him to follow in his footsteps and he wants to sing - - well - - I guess Jazz. As I recall it was a very good movie; I've only thought of it again in recent years since I started watching reactions to this song. It's a beauty. He wrote it in honor of his immigrant grandparents. Hope you enjoy it. BTW, interesting tidbit alert: this gentleman went to the same high school (Erasmus in Brooklyn) as Barbra Streisand. They were in different classes and didn't know each other too well, but they WERE both in the school chorus. Thanks for reacting to this. All the best!!
So, yep. The people they keep focusing on in the audience are the characters of his father (the late Sir Laurence Olivier) and I'm pretty sure the woman is his wife or girlfriend (played by Lucie Arnaz). In the movie, I think this is when the father finally goes to see his son do what he loves to do. Some more great Neil Diamond (this is a VERY deep well, as in addition to his own performances and recordings, he's written a sh*tload of songs for other singers, the list is long). For songs that he wrote that he himself is famous for performing, I'd start with Love on the Rocks, Sweet Caroline, Hello, Again and the song I literally had in my head for hours at work today (it's what I get for watching reaction videos over breakfast) Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show (with the live opening intro/monologue - - it's interesting). Anyway, and yes, Ellis Island / Statue of Liberty. Neil's grandparents were Jewish immigrants who left Eastern Europe during the anti-Jewish pogroms - - here they came to be able to worship freely. He meant this song very deeply. Great reaction. Yes, his outfit is totally badass.
I remember when I first found out that little old man I had watched when I was little was Laurence Olivier! I was gobsmacked! I haven’t seen an actor who could so completely hide himself in a character the way he could. Best actor I’ve ever seen. His Richard III change the way I see evil, because he was so vile and charming! How he pulled that combination off I’ll never know!
When the Statue of Liberty was re-dedicated in July 1986 (after three years of having it cleaned up and renovated), this song was part of the festivities.
Yes this is based on the movie The jazz Singer I love Neil Diamond for over 50 I've been to and it brings me such joy to reacting to him. Keep listening to Neil Diamond you will totally fall in love ❤️❤️❤️
You would never know it by all of the hatred that abounds today, but there was a time, not that long ago when we, as Americans were proud to be that beacon of light that everyone wanted to touch! We recognized that diversity actually made us stronger as a country, as a society. I'm afraid too much damage has been done to tarnish that benevolent nature that used to thrive within us. We are jaded now.
So truly spoken I’m am scared of the thought they we could be in chains. I grew up loving this country and was a time so very proud to let my eyes gaze up the White House not now, we are tarnished and I feel sick about it daily. We have to get back to center quickly.
This was Neil Diamond at the height of his powers. The Jazz Singer was a powerful movie. There were lots of dramatic conflicts and a lot of really great music. Please, please, please do Brother Loves Travelling Salvation Show! That song is one of Neil's early hits in the sixties and it will take you to church. I promise you'll be pulling out the church flag for that one. I've seen him in concert three times, but I would not go to see him again. The voice is no longer what it was, and I want to remember it at it's best. He wrote nearly every song he sang. He did a few covers, and wrote songs for other groups too. He wrote I'm a Believer for the Monkees, and Red Rubber Ball, and several others. I'm a diehard fan, and have been for over 50 years.
He retired from touring in 2018 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. It looks like he’s made a couple of appearances since then, and I think he sang a song at one of them, but at 82 he’s not up to doing a concert, especially with his high standards. Thank God we live at a time when music can be recorded and enjoyed by all decades later.
The song is about his grandmother escaping to United States of America, at the time she was nine years old, she was not a grandmother yet that's what this is about Neil Diamond was born and raised in Canada.
Neil Diamond was touring in 2001. The Brooklyn boy scheduled his NY homecoming at Madison Square Gardner for October of 2001. It was only a few weeks after 9/11. My parents purchased tickets months prior. They debated whether to go out of fear, but with a strong NYPD presence, they went. On the backdrop of the stage was the American Flag drapped with a Black Ribbon. And it was this song that he opened the concert. Everyone was on their feet, singing with tears of sadness and pride. I wish I was there. To this day they still speak of this concert as a moment they will never forget.😢❤
My 7th grade year I was taking American History. It was 1982. My teacher set up a 3 screen slide show. Yes, actual slides and screens. The presentation was about America. They played this song for the music. When it got to him singing “America: My Country this of thee”and saying “Today!”, it was amazing. They had all 3 screens flashing at different times with the musics and photos. My little 12 year old mind was blown. My kids would think that was medieval in today’s standards. As I type on my iPad with my AirPods in, I still remember sitting in that class and being blown away with that slide show and this song!
I saw him in concert in the early 1980's. This was his opening song. He rose up from under the stage and started belting out this song - Goosebump moment - plus he was wearing a bright white shirt with beaded fringes down each sleeve and they had every spotlight on him! Very magical! I had great close up floor seats because I went to the concert with Neil Diamond's drummer's cousin! We also had backstage passes for after the show to visit with her cousin , the drummer. Didn't get to meet Mr. Diamond but it was still cool going backstage! That drummer also happened to be Elvis Presley's drummer as well. He was a pretty well known drummer! His name was Ronnie Tutt.
Neil Diamond is awesome one of my favorite live albums "Hot August Night I got it on vinyl as a kid and also have it on cd and listen to it all the time he has so many great songs
My all time favorite performer. Saw him in concert twice in the early eighties. This song is from his movie "The Jazz Singer". Listen to more of his music and you will understand why people love this man.
Hi! Love your reactions! Neil Diamond is so talented, I think you will really enjoy reacting to him. I was lucky enough to see him in Houston in 1976, and he really did have the audience on their feet clapping and having a ball and I think this was the song that did it. He wrote this for The Jazz Singer, which came out in 1980. But he’s such an incredible performer with so many fantastic songs, his audiences were always very enthusiastic.

This is a scene from the film "The Jazz Singer" if you haven't seen it, it's well worth watching it. Neil Diamond is a fabulous singer/songwriter ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
The original "The Jazz Singer" was the first "talkie" movie. It ended the silent movie era. It starred Al Jolson in the title role. Of course, Neil can really wear the hell out of a sequined shirt.

I've seen him in concert 5 times......AMAZING performer over the last 40+ years....... INCREDIBLE song writer and INCREDIBLE singer. He's AMAZING..... BTW.....Lucy Arnaz plays his lover/wife and OMAR SHARIF plays his father.
The movie is The Jazz Singer about a young Jewish man whose father wants his son to be the Canter in their Synagogue but he wants to sing his own songs on stage. The girl/soman they keep showing in the video and movie is Lucie Arnaz, daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. They were very famous in the 50's and 60's Can never get enough of Neil Diamond
You definitely need to see the movie. At this point the audience had no idea who this character was. This was like his introduction to the world. I saw him in Detroit in 2001 and this song was the intro to the concert - it was about a month after 9-11. We were screaming.
The Video is from the Movie the Jazz Singer. Neil is a Jewish American and the song is a tribute to the Ellis Island immigrants from the early 20th century.
Listen to the prologue of Neil's legendary Hot August Night concert. The build-up is magnificent. You will love it! Neil Diamond is one of the most successful artists ever, yet remains in my opinion grossly underrated. What a voice, what a charisma on stage. This man broke attendance records wherever he performed, all over the world. Fabulous!
The smitten girl is Lucy Arnaz…daughter of the infamous Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The older gent is Lawrence Olivier, who play his father in the movie. He wanted Neil to become a cantor in the Jewish temple. Great movie you need to see it!
Yes this was from his amazing movie “The Jazz Singer.” I grew up listening to Neil Diamond. He was a favorite of my parents. Great reaction. Check out his duet with Barbara Streisand “You don’t bring me flowers.” (Album version not live-you get a clearer listening experience) And another song from The Jazz Singer “Hello Again” just to name a few ❤
Neil wrote this song for his grandma, who came to this country by boat when she was 11 years old! He always showed her pucture and paid tribute to her at his concerts!
I was fortunate to have seen him in concert at the Hollywood (FL) Sportatorium on November 22, 1982. This was his opening song and... after his set and two encores...was his 32nd and closing song. After over forty years, I can still feel the pulsing vibes and remember seeing the American Flag unroll behind him! Thank you for the memories.
I did see him in concert with a friend (and grown kids) and we acted like kids!! You never miss for audience participation when he starts Sweet Caroline. What a showman!! America was the cherry on top for The Jazz Singer. I have the Soundtrack CD and there are many very memorable songs.
The movie is indeed The Jazz Singer, and it's fantastic!! You MUST watch it! My favorite song from the movie is Hello Again. You can listen to him for days on end - you won't find a bad song. Simply the very best singer/songwriter ever.
You're right on all counts! Neil's "Love On The Rocks" from the same soundtrack next maybe? It's a mature kinda song, similar to you don't bring me flowers.
Wow! This was glorious... I haven't heard Neil Diamond for years. How did I forget? I grew up with him, absolutely loved him when I was a teenager and young adult. This gorgeous song and the voice brought tears, remembering a lost land.
This is one of my favorite Neil Diamond songs. The anticipation of Neil singing as you listen to the introduction, WOW! I am a former music educator, and I loved this song SO much that I had the high school choir I was directing years ago sing this. I LOVE the lyrics to this song! GREAT job Neil!!!
I enjoy the "full orchestral sound", use of the violins helps set it off. Neil Diamond has been setting the tone for decades. Yes, this was from The Jazz Singer.
I had the pleasure of seeing this man in concert twice. His songs range from the spectacle of this song-America and Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show to the lovely poetry of I Am I Said. He is a prolific songwriter. He sure knows how to put on a show! He’s partial to those sparkly shirts! Enjoy.
The older gentleman was Sir Lawrence Olivier. He played Neil’s father who was a Jewish cantor and wanted Neil to follow in his steps. The lady was Lucy Arnaz who played his live interest in the movie. You really should watch The Jazz Singer!🔥❤️💎
I love Neil Diamond. When I was 20, he was impossibly old and corny. Then I was 30 and he was someone talented and outspoken and a little mysterious. Then at 40, it was WHOA he's amazing. Now, honey, he can be 80 and bald or frail or anything and I still think he's one hell of a man. He can reach right into you and grab you with that rich voice and that presence and delivery. He has written so many hits for so many bands and artists. He's a once in a generation talent.
So many more greats…He is ahhhmazing! You would love his movie The Jazz Singer( which is where this video came from).Have seen him many times in concert…never sat down. Almost three hours of pure Heaven. This song was written by him and dedicated to his grandmother who came to this country at age 11 by boat. He is truly a humble and amazing singer, artist, actor and song writer. Saw his 50th Anniversary concert which was his last, due to his diagnosis to Parkinson’s disease. Currently Beautiful Nouse…a okay about his life is on Broadway!

This is a great song! I grew up on Mr. Neil. My aunt was in love with him, [her era]. Cherry Cherry, and Cracklin' Rosie are very nostalgic for me too. He is talking about immigrating to America. Women used to bring roses to his concerts and throw them on stage.

Yes, Neil Diamond starred in a 1980 remake of the film The Jazz Singer about a Jewish cantor who longs to sing popular music. The older man in the audience is Laurence Olivier playing his very traditional father, and next to him Lucie Arnaz (daughter of Lucy & Desi) plays his agent and love interest.
Neil diamond has many great songs but if you want to listen to one of his tracks that probably never gets requested ,try Neil diamond " Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show" x 😊

It's a tribute to all immigrants. But yes, it was definitely inspired by his own grandparents.
He wrote this song to honor his grandma who came to this country by boat when she was eleven years old! Does this at every concert!
From the movie called "Jazz Singer" that's Lucy Arnez with Sir Lawrence Olivier. Loved this movie!
This song never fails to give me goosebumps.
Neil was such a showman. This goes way back!
Neil could sing the phone book to me and I’d be happy!🔥❤️💎
Listen to the prologue of Neil's legendary Hot August Night concert. The build-up is magnificent. You will love it! Neil Diamond is one of the most successful artists ever, yet remains in my opinion grossly underrated. What a voice, what a charisma on stage. This man broke attendance records wherever he performed, all over the world. Fabulous!
This is from the new version of the "Jazz Singer". The young woman and old man pictured are his co-stars, Lucy Arnez, and Sir Lawrence Olivie.
He has performed America at the Statue of Liberty and the White House on the Fourth of July!
The smitten girl is Lucy Arnaz…daughter of the infamous Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. The older gent is Lawrence Olivier, who play his father in the movie. He wanted Neil to become a cantor in the Jewish temple. Great movie you need to see it!
Neil Diamond could write songs hes voice this guy is a legend
Yes , he's talking about coming to America he was an immigrant, his family are immagrants!! He is so proud to be an American!!❤❤
It was a movie! Check out The jazz Singer... The story about a son of a Jewish Cantor who goes to Hollywood and gets recorded and becomes a star!
He knows how to do it! He’s a master, the best there will ever be!❤️♥️💕
Neil wrote this song for his grandma, who came to this country by boat when she was 11 years old! He always showed her pucture and paid tribute to her at his concerts!
Saw him in Baltimore in the 90’s; best concert I ever went to. Never go wrong with Neil.
He was basically a good songwriter with a good looks and distinctive voice and he had to be trained to be a performer which he did really well.
I share the same passion for music and Neil Diamond's voice...my favorite singer-songwriter
Check out the movie. You will love it Enjoy Neil Diamond singing "Love on the rocks," and many other songs he wrote for the movie he started-in.
I did see him in concert with a friend (and grown kids) and we acted like kids!! You never miss for audience participation when he starts Sweet Caroline. What a showman!! America was the cherry on top for The Jazz Singer. I have the Soundtrack CD and there are many very memorable songs.
Neil is great he has a whole bunch of great stuff. PLAY ME is probably my favorite song from him it's sooo good thx...♡
Definitely an awesome showman and I love this song and I am I said 😊😊😊
The movie is indeed The Jazz Singer, and it's fantastic!! You MUST watch it! My favorite song from the movie is Hello Again. You can listen to him for days on end - you won't find a bad song. Simply the very best singer/songwriter ever.
Yes, from the movie The Jazz Singer from 1980. About immigration and family. Neil is SUPERB!!!!
You're right on all counts! Neil's "Love On The Rocks" from the same soundtrack next maybe? It's a mature kinda song, similar to you don't bring me flowers.
Neil was amazing and he was backed up by an ahhhmazing band. They were like family!🔥❤️💎
This song was perfect for the resurgence of patriotism in the early ‘80’s. There isn’t a bad song that he does.
The smitten kitten in the audience is played by Lucy Arnaz the daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz of I Love Lucy,
The duet with Shirley Bassey was Play Me…so stinkin sexy!
Britt, I think you would really like Neil Diamond’s 1971 BBC concert. I think Brother Loves Traveling Salvation Show and Holly Holy are outstanding.
Wow! This was glorious... I haven't heard Neil Diamond for years. How did I forget? I grew up with him, absolutely loved him when I was a teenager and young adult. This gorgeous song and the voice brought tears, remembering a lost land.
Neil Diamond and his parents were immigrants to America and he is so patriotic for America freedoms!❤❤
Saw him in his prime. Probably the best concert I ever saw. He was a showman!
He always had the best orchestra and presentation.
Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes (Secret World Live)
Neil Diamond 's (America) is a very patiotic song!!❤❤
I saw Neil in concert when I was about 12-13, still to this day after about 20 concerts I've seen, Neil was hands down the best concert I've ever seen
From the movie The Jazz Singer. Saw it three times when it came out, I had a huge crush on Neil Diamond and he was definitely eye candy in the movie.
Great talent , Neil and Elvis. No better show men , they held the audience in the palm of there hand.
I saw him in concert. It was a Great concert. So glad I had the chance... Yes, great movie the Jazz Singer...
those coming with freedom in their hearts. coming the right way like a good neighbor does. coming to give, not just take the way freedom lovers do. and why this resonates with me. my italian ancestors came to america in 1859 and helped build a community beside their neighbors, neighbors of different nationalities, and make me so proud of their contribution!
This is a great song! I grew up on Mr. Neil. My aunt was in love with him, [her era]. Cherry Cherry, and Cracklin' Rosie are very nostalgic for me too. He is talking about immigrating to America. Women used to bring roses to his concerts and throw them on stage.
There is no explanation for the performances Neil Diamond would give. It definitely gives Elvis vibes. No one sings like Neil Diamond.
You like all of his songs I think. He wrote this song for his grandmother who was an immigrant from Russia a Jew time frame is somewhere WWI or Post WWII era. You'll enjoy think of all of his music.
If you really want to get into Neil Diamond songs, just start with the album Tap Root Manuscript.
You and any of your naysayers will be won over.
I promise you will not be disappointed.
I forgot about this album. Please do Done to Soon. But the album is a must.
Thank you, TY, TY, THANK YOU.
Neil Diamond has sold 130 million records. He is 82 in 2023. This is a live concert...
Would love for you to react to Neil performing Hell,Yeah and The Story of My life. These songs are underplayed and he does them magnificently!🔥❤️💎
Neil diamond has many great songs but if you want to listen to one of his tracks that probably never gets requested ,try Neil diamond " Brother Love’s Travelling Salvation Show" x 😊
Loved your reaction!!! This is a powerful song! Thank you for playing it!
The song, “Hello Again,” was also from The Jazz Singer & is a fantastic song.
The movie was "The Jazz Singer" ; the actress in the audience, Lucy Arnez; the old actor next to her, Sir Lawrence Oliver. This was the climatic scene for the movie.
It is a movie - "The Jazz Singer." But even when he's low-key in concert, it feels so much like this. A concert like none other.
Scene from The Jazz Singer. Woman is Lucy Arnez Daughter of Lucille Ball) Man you thought unhappy is Sir Laurence Olivier. Neil Diamond sang this song written for the Bicentennial in 1986. Inspired y his grandmother who immigrated to the United States
Neil Diamond has always been a favorite of mine. I have never heard a bad song from him and I’ve been a fan 3/4 of my life and I’m 60!!
Neil Diamond is so talented that he has a fabulous song that he wrote named "Crunchy Granola Suite." Yes, it's about Granola and it sounds great, and it's so much fun.
Yes!!! Love it! And “Porcupine Pie”.
@@terri2494 and red, red wine too
He was my moms favorite back in the day, she loves Neil so i grew up with as all his music. Theres a Broadway show in New York about his life n the guy playing the part of Neil also grew up listening to Neil because he was his dads favorite n hes fabulous, he sounds lust like him so iam taking my mom to see it for Mother's Day ❤️
It is from a movie The Jazz Singer! Starring Neil Diamond, Sir Laurence Olivier and Lucie Arnez (who is in audience). It came out in 1980, it was a remake of a 1927 film of the same name, that was one of the 1st films with sound.
Imagine this type of performance/showmanship while listening to the Hot August Night concert. Of all the concerts by all the artists of all time, that is the one I would most love to have attended.
He starred in the movie The Jazz Singer which told his story that began a 50+ year singing career. This is the final performance from The Jazz Singer. His Dad was played by Sur Lawrence Olivier and the smitten girl was The daughter of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.
Have been to many of his concerts…never sat! Can’t stand still while the music is playin’!🔥❤️💎
This was America once upon a time. Celebrating and welcoming
