ℹFAQ ❓How do I create a 3D scene from a painting? There are several methods for this. I have a couple of videos showing the techniques: -- Camera Mapping in blender: ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.htmlsi=ufxSTv_FeHtst2JM -- Krita-Blender Texturing workflow: ruclips.net/video/IOuBC1OeODc/видео.htmlsi=61zToJYp5LNexSlO -- Making animated 2D illustration : ruclips.net/video/WmcmJqMQfbc/видео.htmlsi=UlVmN4nCZa2R1QaU ❓ How do I transfer an image between Blender and Krita? - To transfer from Blender to Krita: Render the sketch, then use Image > Copy from the top panel in the Render window. Alternatively, you can save the image as a PNG or JPEG and open it in Krita. - To transfer back to Blender: Use Add > Image > Images as Planes from the top panel. This imports the image as a single polygon, which you can then cut and modify however you like. Check the links above for more on modeling and cutting 2D illustrations. ❓Will there be a Grease Pencil tutorial for beginners? Yes, I’ll likely create a more in-depth tutorial in the future, covering the entire animation process.

Hey! Thanks for the question. It’s Krita - a free 2d painting software similar to Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint or Procreate. It’s fairly simple to import images there. You can render the image and save to file (eg png format) and just open it in that software via File-Open, like in any other programs out there. Or, in my case, I just copy-pasted the rendered lineart from blender to Krita. So you have bunch of options. For me copy-paste is most efficient if you don’t render mega resolutions. It’s fast and you don’t create temporary files on your hard drive.
That parallax thing is so cool !! Can you please do a tutorial about compositing animations on blender ? And maybe importing animation from other programs too ?
Была подписана на вашу группу в вк и как-то потеряла ее, рада, что нашла здесь! Помню вас по конкурсу с Джайной и вашему интервью, где вы говорите, что не умеете рисовать. я тогда очень посмеялась :D
The line should be enclosed and you might experiment with zooming in and out while using the Fill tool it seems like it affects the fill tool. At least it was before blender 4.3 To be honest, I’m using NijiGpen addon for coloring. It is much better imo
@@PolyPaint I watched another tutorial and figured it out. I just didn't know you had to manually switch between solid stroke & solid fill separately from switching tools.
Actually how? How did you create parallax? And why did paint it all in Krita? Ho did export that grease pencil drawing? This video left me with more questions than answers. Could you explain with more detail what actually happened in this video?
This is very good that you start to get questions. Each are those are very specific and now you can solve them one by one, understanding the process completely. Now for the questions. Parallax is created by making mid ground rock and the frog separately from the background and having them on a decent distance, on top of that, parallax works only when the camera moves, so I made the camera to move forward in the animation Painting in 2d is always faster and easier than in blender. You can still paint the textures in blender but if you do 2d art, it’s better to use the typical 2d software for concept art or painting with all the brushes you’re using for your 2d art. To export the GP object, you just render raw lineart( turn off everything else) and save the render as png or JPEG. Alternatively you can just copy-paste the render into krita. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to ask. But it a good thing to ask questions. Having a right question is a big part of the solution.
Hey. Yeah I have two videos about this. Camera Mapping in blender: ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.htmlsi=ufxSTv_FeHtst2JM and Krita-Blender Texturing workflow: ruclips.net/video/IOuBC1OeODc/видео.htmlsi=61zToJYp5LNexSlO Both touch the same topic
Yeah, that’s a valid approach. Although if it’s 2d animation, you’d have to redo that in blender. I used photoshop to do a concept of a coloring and lighting before doing that in blender and it definitely saves time . I then copied the image in grease pencil and used color picker to colorize it directly from the concept art.
Yeah, I like blender more to be honest. Although you don’t have the same toolset since blenders grease pencil like vector graphics in 3d space. You can still achieve painterly style, but it’s not as easy as just painting in photoshop. For doing flat colors and linear blender is fine. I’m waiting for the 4.3 version as they announced updated grease pencil. Should become even better soon
i need that part where you turn that rock into 3d. and is there a way to make it wrap around a 3d object or is it better to texture it manually if i want a 360 turn in a scene. I dont know mucuh about projection but i think 360 would work i guess. or if the scene is alot more complex.
i don’t have a video focused solely on that technique but I have covered it in this video. I cover 3 projection methods and the one you need is a 3rd one, using external 2d editor ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.html
@@PolyPaint so I have gimp and regular MS paint. blender does not seem to have regular copy and past functions so how do you get a drawing into another program? import? so many weird file types.
@@seacoast6351 To get the drawing from blender to any program, you should render it first. Then, in the top panel you will have Image menu and Copy option. This copies the image into the clipboard and you can now paste it everywhere, drawing programs, discord, presentations etc. both ms paint and gimp should work too. Its the fastest way. The normal way would be to render the image and save it as png or jpeg and just open it in any 2d software. The megafast approach would be to take a screenshot (windows button + shift + S) and paste that into drawing software. Not every software recognizes copied images with transparency. Photoshop for example doesnt, while Krita does.
Hello, Very good intro animation tutorial, thank you. I'm a first time user of grease pencil/animation in Blender, I have a question: The timeline really lags when I scrub through it, is there a way to speed up the performance? thanks in advance!
Hey! Thanks a lot for the quiestion. I personally haven't experienced any lags of the timeline. Maybe some sort of a bug or a hardware issue, idk. What may cause the drop of performance of your animation: - heavy scenes (lots of 3d, millions of polygons, effects, lots of lights or lots of modifiers that make real-time computations) - being in render preview mode especially in cycles( so basically it renders frames real-time hence the delay) Please check your scene and if you have anything computation-heavy. Other than that, hard to tell what can cause lags
@@PolyPaint thank you very much for the reply, since having the program lag just scrolling through the timeline before even starting a scene leads me to believe that perhaps it could be a hardware issue. I work in Adobe Animate on an iMac and I have no problems, it works smoothly, Perhaps it’s because Blender is such a beast of a program? I’ll look into all the possible issues you mentioned and see if I can trouble shoot a solution. Again thank you for the reply and I’ll get back to you if I resolved the issue. Happy Holidays!
Please, can you explain how you made the stone (at least briefly)? Just to get the main idea. I've heard about projection mapping before but never seen its being used like this in 2d/3d
hello! i have a question. for coloring, you used krita. are we supposed to export a png and then color it with krita, and then import the file into blender once we are done?
Hey. I used that for the background only which is static. like in any animation, backgrounds are painted as 2d image whether digitally on traditionally. I just copy-paste the render into krita. If you want to export png, you can do that too. But for me it doesnt really matter. Black line on a white background works fine when you use Multiply. The frog was colored in blender using grease pencil. Here is a video about coloring in Blender : ruclips.net/video/XyjRu38DK9M/видео.htmlsi=3rYWVzuYRr5gIKf6
Hey, do you mean the background and the stone layer? I painted them in a separate layers in krita and then just switched off the unnecessary layers before the export. Then I projected the stone onto separate 3d mesh to make the parallax effect
Hey man just one question, once you have drawn all the frames, after that, GP allows you to configurate in the timeline 1/1 (24fps), 2/2(12fps) ? Cheers.
Hey. You can set up the framerate in the Output settings at any time. But that doesnt influence your keyframe placement. It makes the animation feel slower or faster. if you go from 24fps to 12 fps, then your final animation will be x2 longer and slower. If you're animating on two's you can scale down your frames on a timeline relative to the start by 200% and you will get 12fps animation animated each frame. If you want to go from 24 to 30 fps... something will be lost or shifted on a timeline. Its obviously better to have final fps while you're drawing frames
I painted the background in Krita and imported that as images projected onto simple geometry. For the frog, I used Fill tool for Grease Pencil object in Blender.
It’s hard to say precisely. If you’re doing some heavy 3d stuff and rendering, the more you invest the better obviously. If it’s 2d animation, then it’s not that demanding I guess.
OK THIS IS GENIUS!!?!?!?!?!? You're SUUUCH a good painter, so you already have a huge advantage! I wanna get better at that for my background paintings! do you have or can you PLEEAAAASSSSEEEEE make a tutorial on the projection mapping you mentioned?!?! You explain things so well!! this is genius!!!!!!! I want to learn how to do painting and projection mapping so I can make my short film look awesome!!!!! :D :D :D :D thank you so much for this video alone!!!!!!!
While in fill mode, try disabling the Visual Aids in Advanced menu on top. Otherwise, you have to click twice to fill the lineart. Also check if you dont have any gaps and such things. might be an issue. And select the fill material when trying to fill. I caught myself filling with line materials couple times and though it doesnt work while it just created another contour under my lineart. XD
@@PolyPaint It seems that it fills the fill when all the contours of the lines are completely closed, in the previous version it was not necessary to close the contour, you could just paint the edges and then use the fill, and in the new version it is necessary that the lines are closed, am I right? I like the way the curves look now, the tool is more flexible now
@@1saitohajime You can still set up gap closing as before. You need to increase the gap size in the Advanced settings of the fill tool. Visual aids helps to see the guides where is will work. After you click with the fill tool once, you can adjust the gap closure size with the mouse wheel, visual aids will reflect that change.
@@PolyPaint and still I tried different settings and I have when coloring remain corners that are not painted, and you need to distance the illustration to paint small details, in the old version all painted without problems, but in the new version for me it has become a torment, however, in the new version is more convenient to do Line, if you know how to color in the new version can I contact you somehow to explain to me what I do wrong?

@@2DAnimax Start with youtube, get comfortable with the software and its UI and only then get some courses, i think this will be most efficient. and dont do complex stuff rightaway. Do small and simple exercises that are approachable, otherwise it may get discouraging fast. Learning should be sustainable in order to be successful. Take one small step at the time Regarding the pc specs, Im not an expert. Haven't updated my pc in 5 years at least.
Hey. It's called camera projection (or camera mapping). Basically you project an image onto 3d model. I have couple videos about that on my channel. All of them show different ways to make this 3d out of 2d art. I hope it helps ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.htmlsi=FU8xrG8Gql0shQIR ruclips.net/video/WmcmJqMQfbc/видео.htmlsi=SQpGj9PeIPWKGw4x ruclips.net/video/IOuBC1OeODc/видео.htmlsi=tUcJZHGV5edVi-_T
It was, but that is more about the drawing of each keyframe. You can basically draw 1 frame for still shots, and it will feel dynamic with that noise modifier.
I have a question if it doesn't bother you😅. How did you convert the background drawing to 3D? Because I saw that you drew it, and suddenly it became 3D. Thank you in advance.
Hey! Thanks for the question. I have a video dedicated to that here : The ABSOLUTE BEST Way to Create 3D Anime Backgrounds in Blender ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.html And the latest video is kinda the same technique too. You can check that out too.
You also animate objects in Z-depth? Like making an object pass in front of and behind layers, without adjusting/changing the hierarchy of the layers? & is there a shortcut for it?
If I understood the question correctly, then you should just place your strokes in a right order in 3d space. That’s the benefit of having it in 3d. GP doesn’t work too well with the z depth sometimes and you can get a fighting if you have lots of layered GP layers or object and it’s confusing to blender what’s in front. But for simple scenes with couple view planes placing them correctly in 3d space should work fine. Eg if in one frame your GP character is begins the stone, then you on another one you move the strokes in front of the stone and it will appear in front.
If you're talking about parallax , then I already have 2 videos covering those techniques. Check them out and please let me know If you have any questions! ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.html ruclips.net/video/IOuBC1OeODc/видео.html
How do we render the image in 3D ? Or that the image follows the 3D form ? I didn’t understand anything about this detail😭 But your work is incredible🥰

❓ How do I transfer an image between Blender and Krita?
- To transfer from Blender to Krita: Render the sketch, then use Image > Copy from the top panel in the Render window. Alternatively, you can save the image as a PNG or JPEG and open it in Krita.
- To transfer back to Blender: Use Add > Image > Images as Planes from the top panel. This imports the image as a single polygon, which you can then cut and modify however you like. Check the links above for more on modeling and cutting 2D illustrations.

The line should be enclosed and you might experiment with zooming in and out while using the Fill tool it seems like it affects the fill tool. At least it was before blender 4.3
To be honest, I’m using NijiGpen addon for coloring. It is much better imo
@@PolyPaint I watched another tutorial and figured it out. I just didn't know you had to manually switch between solid stroke & solid fill separately from switching tools.
Yeah, the tool fills with the selected material. If the line material is selected then it will do the outline instead of fill
Superb ❤
Thanks ❤️
Actually how? How did you create parallax? And why did paint it all in Krita? Ho did export that grease pencil drawing? This video left me with more questions than answers. Could you explain with more detail what actually happened in this video?
This is very good that you start to get questions. Each are those are very specific and now you can solve them one by one, understanding the process completely.
Now for the questions.
Parallax is created by making mid ground rock and the frog separately from the background and having them on a decent distance, on top of that, parallax works only when the camera moves, so I made the camera to move forward in the animation
Painting in 2d is always faster and easier than in blender.
Outstanding.👏👏👏👏👏
Many thanks!
just WOW!
Waw fast and to the point just how I like it I'm following you now.
Welcome!
0:40 what parallex projection? how did u create that 3d stone from 2d ? you can't just jump the steps
I will cover that topic separately and more in-depth
a full tutorial for beginners pleaseee,I'll watch it no matter how long the video is
Thanks! Will see if I can come up with something valuable
how did you paint in krita and then on Blender that part was really fast, is there a video for that
Hey. Yeah I have two videos about this.
Camera Mapping in blender: ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.htmlsi=ufxSTv_FeHtst2JM
and Krita-Blender Texturing workflow: ruclips.net/video/IOuBC1OeODc/видео.htmlsi=61zToJYp5LNexSlO
Both touch the same topic
Definitely would love to know how you did the parallax semi-3D background 😮
Working on that currently 🔥
I need a tutorial for that paralax with projection mapping, you doing black magic right there.
Working on it already XD
Thank you so much!! That really helps!!!
I'm glad it's useful!
amazing bro!!!!
Thanks bro! 🤜🤛
Can we, for example, paint the concept in Photoshop and then transfer it to Blender to continue the animation?
Yeah, that’s a valid approach. Although if it’s 2d animation, you’d have to redo that in blender. I used photoshop to do a concept of a coloring and lighting before doing that in blender and it definitely saves time . I then copied the image in grease pencil and used color picker to colorize it directly from the concept art.
@@PolyPaint Thank you for the useful information, I really appreciate it!🙏❤️
this is so good
aw, thanks!
Wait you're telling me I can switch from animating in photoshop to animating in Blender ?/? that's awesome!
Super interesting video. Nice job and thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
i need that part where you turn that rock into 3d. and is there a way to make it wrap around a 3d object or is it better to texture it manually if i want a 360 turn in a scene.
Can I have a detailed video on how to draw a background?
Maybe one day. I’m not really a background artist 😅
Please how did you do projection mapping..🤩🫶
Check this video, I explain the projection methods there -
ruclips.net/video/hM_uhazFOl0/видео.html
So I cant tell how you got from :30 to :31 with all the color texture brush options. is that a different program?
That's Krita. you can use any 2d painting software for painting backgrounds. Im working in Krita mostly.
What may cause the drop of performance of your animation:
- heavy scenes (lots of 3d, millions of polygons, effects, lots of lights or lots of modifiers that make real-time computations)
- being in render preview mode especially in cycles( so basically it renders frames real-time hence the delay)
Please check your scene and if you have anything computation-heavy.
Yeah, this video is in the works currently and will come next week hopefully
hello! i have a question. for coloring, you used krita. are we supposed to export a png and then color it with krita, and then import the file into blender once we are done?
How have you colored the backgroung and layer 1
separately?
Hey, do you mean the background and the stone layer? I painted them in a separate layers in krita and then just switched off the unnecessary layers before the export. Then I projected the stone onto separate 3d mesh to make the parallax effect
@@PolyPaint Oh thank you. It really helped me!
Thank you so much!
I didn't know Blender could animate an individual image like this.
I don't need to rely on AI anymore.
Awesome! Glad it helps!
i don`t get it. how you did you add color? looks like a different program
I painted the background in Krita and imported that as images projected onto simple geometry. For the frog, I used Fill tool for Grease Pencil object in Blender.
i want to make 30 secs shorts by using animation Blender Could you Please tell me How much vram we need and ram and RTX type
It’s hard to say precisely. If you’re doing some heavy 3d stuff and rendering, the more you invest the better obviously. If it’s 2d animation, then it’s not that demanding I guess.
"Paint like you normally would", and it's the one thing I'm the worst at 😂
More seriously, thank you for these tips!
Thanks!
Wow, thank you! I'm currently working on that video.
Hi,why is one-click coloring not working well in Blender 4.3.2? how to solve this problem?
While in fill mode, try disabling the Visual Aids in Advanced menu on top. Otherwise, you have to click twice to fill the lineart.
Also check if you dont have any gaps and such things. might be an issue.
And select the fill material when trying to fill. I caught myself filling with line materials couple times and though it doesnt work while it just created another contour under my lineart. XD
just checked 4.3 and apparently you still have to double click even with the Visual Aids turned off
@@PolyPaint It seems that it fills the fill when all the contours of the lines are completely closed, in the previous version it was not necessary to close the contour, you could just paint the edges and then use the fill, and in the new version it is necessary that the lines are closed, am I right?
Nice channel hope i learn some blender
I hope so too
Cool. Thanks btw nice concept study
Glad you liked it!
can we do same stuff which is you did here but PC with minimum system requirements(Blender) ?
I dont think i did anything heavy in terms of performance. Unlike 3d, 2d animation should require less computing resources
@@PolyPaint i have laptop with these spec.(cpu:AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 4650U ,iGPU: AMD Radeon RX Vega 6 (Ryzen 4000/5000)16GB RAM) ,hope it can handle 2d animations...i would like to try 2d anim in blender. any beginner's course/tutorial do you recommend ?
@@2DAnimax Start with youtube, get comfortable with the software and its UI and only then get some courses, i think this will be most efficient. and dont do complex stuff rightaway. Very Inspiring!

what did I miss, you drew in 2d all all the sudden it's 3d? how did you do that? 0:42
Hey. It's called camera projection (or camera mapping). Basically you project an image onto 3d model. I have couple videos about that on my channel. All of them show different ways to make this 3d out of 2d art. I hope it helps

The irony of using a noise modifier to state "It looks hand drawn", as if the frog wasn't already drawn by hand to start. :D
It was, but that is more about the drawing of each keyframe. You can basically draw 1 frame for still shots, and it will feel dynamic with that noise modifier.
@@PolyPaint True!
I have a question if it doesn't bother you😅. How did you convert the background drawing to 3D? Because I saw that you drew it, and suddenly it became 3D. Thank you in advance.

@@PolyPaint thanks bro❤❤.

Awesome great work
Thank you so much 😀
Awesome video...!
Glad you enjoyed it
You also animate objects in Z-depth? Like making an object
pass in front of and behind layers, without adjusting/changing the hierarchy of the layers? & is there a shortcut for it?
If I understood the question correctly, then you should just place your strokes in a right order in 3d space. That’s the benefit of having it in 3d.
GP doesn’t work too well with the z depth sometimes and you can get a fighting if you have lots of layered GP layers or object and it’s confusing to blender what’s in front.
But for simple scenes with couple view planes placing them correctly in 3d space should work fine.
Eg if in one frame your GP character is begins the stone, then you on another one you move the strokes in front of the stone and it will appear in front.
0:35 WE NEED A TUTORIAL FOR THIS PLEASE
