sleeping next to the whelping box is a 50/50 for me. I stay close and constantly check on the pups if mom is inexperienced as ive had a new momma suffocate a pup, ive avoided it from happing again because i slept next to the box. But as long as i know mommas got it i usually let her be.
Just bred my miniature schnauzer. She had 5 . I was stalking mom to feed pups,and when I seen how chunk they're getting,I stop being a helicopter breeder.
Great tips! Do you use heat in the whelping box? Or is that also a case of ”overdoing it”, that the mom dog should be able to keep pups warm herself?
We do use a heat lamp!

Yes, listened and at a couple of days shy of 2wks they were already climbing out of the whelping box behind the mom, eyes still closed😅

great video! we are excited to be coming up on our first breeding in March 2024. we have a female pocket bully (Sadie). any vital info you can share in regards to a suitable whelping box? Is the old school swimming pool with whelping pads sufficient and is the heat lamps necessary?

Hi there, just newly seen your video… was in the process of searching what to feed my American bully after she gives birth which is any day and seen your video. I also had another question if you don’t mind?… this is my bully’s first litter and I was curious a lot of people are cutting the puppies umbilical cords is this something that should definitely be done or do we let the mom do it? Any help would be extremely grateful ♥️
Mom being on puppy food is helpful, but besides that we don’t switch anything up. We do csections so our pups have the umbilical cords cut at the vet. I do not recommend natural birth for American Bullies
@@bullybarn pups were born sept 14 natural birth and were really healthy. Mom did amazing and everything was better than I could have ever expected.🥰 May I ask why you don’t recommend natural birth? My bully cut the cords herself. My girl did amazing and she was such a proud mommy.
@@AngFit4Life in my experience with bullies,being such a extreme breed, it is very common for the pups to get stuck in the birth canal and can cause death in the mother, the stuck puppy , or several puppies. We have had a great experience with C-sections, and think it is the safer way with less risk.
Hello. I'm a new subscriber, and a beginner dog breeder. I like your hands off approach to whelping. It makes the most sense to me. But I have a question. What is the purpose of switching the mamas diet to puppy food 4 weeks before whelping? Just trying to learn as much as I can before having my first litter.
Puppy food is designed to help a puppy grow, for example has more calcium in it so helps pups grow nicely in the womb. Also if you keep the mom dog on puppy food after the pups are born up to the time they’re weaning they’ll adjust to the food easier. Hope this helps 😊

we just had a litter of puppies and Mom bite one and snapped its neck: and I hear of people that say that Mom steps on the puppies sometimes and kills them...... Don't get me wrong I want to not micro manage the litter but I am scared Mom is going to kill one of the puppies any advice or tips???and they are American Bullies
I think it just depends on the nature of the mother. Rather she’s aggressive towards her babies or not. If so I would not continue to breed her if she continues to do that with other pups. Just like with humans, not all moms are created equal and those are qualities you definitely want in your yard. Good mommas are a must.
Sometimes breeding very young females issues like this can arise. Maturity does matter. Don’t just leave them unattended for too long. Try your best to manage without micromanaging.
Let her know when she does well. Whelping pups is not always easy.
I’m Jsut scared of her stomping on the pups , smh she only a pocket bully at 50 pounds. . But damn she can kill em without trying. She’s already smashed a couple from behind when they crawled around to back of her .
Maybe she needs a bigger area. For more safety
