  • The purpose of my accordion videos is to introduce/demonstrate the Five-Finger Stradella-Bass technique, which was devised by the late jazz musician Clarence Edgar Roberts (1906-1983). He worked out this system at some point in the 1930s or 1940s.
ERROR ALERT #1: at 18:02, I should have said “down to the G7,” NOT “D7.”
ERROR ALERT #2: at 18:48, I should have said “C diminished 7 button,” NOT “A diminished 7 button.”
“Over The Rainbow” Chords (as used in this video)

I took accordion lessons when I was a child, prob. 6-7 yrs. 45 years later, I picked it up again. Looked up my old teacher, he was 80 and still playing.

Thanks for the video. All of the paper movement and fast playing makes it difficult to keep up from a viewer standpoint. However, your knowledge about the stradella bass is obvious! You have actually introduced me to a new way of looking at the bass! As a beginner, I am being taught the traditional waltz or polka method of playing bass. You have opened up a brand new door for me. Playing this style changes everything! Now, accordion can become much more expressive and beautiful! Thank you so much!

Ty sir for this video, I have been playing for a quit a while but I am new with combining bass to make different tones, your diagrams are helping to understand it better. Ty.

I have heard so many people "slaughter" and edit this song in karaoke that I chose to sing it not knowing if it would be in a key for my baritone vocal range. It worked out well. I will now use your chord progressions to play it on my "Stomach Steinway" to do it solo on accordion. Thank you. You have piqued my interest in playing accordion again.

I may have to take it slow, but I'm excited to learn this tune on my own accordion. Thank you for sharing.

At some point--soon, I hope--I'll map out the chords for the 12-button (bass side) accordion. It's a little tricky, but I think it can be done. Take care!

Hello, I try to learn playing accordion from youtube videos. This is a very useful channel. The problem is I cant play with both hands. My left hand fails if I concentrate on my right hand. How can I improve that skill? What do you suggest?

Hi. Thanks for watching. As I am NOT a performer myself, the only two things I can recommend are these:
      (1) At first, when learning, PLAY SLOWLY! Play adhering to the correct time signature, but play SLOWLY.
      (2) Tap the chords. In some of my early Stradella-Bass videos, I suggest that as you play the RIGHT hand (which I am not very good at), simply TAP the chord with the left hand, not worrying about absolute timing accuracy within each individual measure. The whole idea here is to learn--with SLOW practice--to mentally associate the right-hand melody with the corresponding chords--all without getting a headache or getting unduly discouraged.

Hi, i'm actualy studying your stradella bass method and i find it really interesting. By doing so, it's like starting from scratch all the ability i had on my left hand. I immediatly found out that by the use of this method i can play song with the right chord instead of filling a similar sound and at some other time being impossible to pick a chord that would resemble to the one shown on the music sheets. I' m looking at other songs chord that i have and i wonder sometimes what would be the best set of keys for some complex chords. Exemple; i have a song which call for A7b9b13. I looked on the stradella bass diagram and i think that all the keys are there to create the chord but i think that is kind of impossible to perform?? What would be the best set of keys in that kind of situation??? Thank you very much for any help....!!!

What chord PRECEDES the A7b9b13, and what chord FOLLOWS that chord? When using the Stradella Bass, it is mechanically best to consider how you "enter" and "exit" that chord space.

@@scalephrase Hi! Thank you for answering so quickly....The chord that is before and after the A7b9b13 is; Dm7....

OK, let's see if I can understand this. Remember: I'm NOT a performer, just a guy who "tinkers" around with the accordion. Considering what info you've given, I would likely do this:
      I would play a Dm7 using this:
"D" counter-bass button: I use my "pinkie" finger for this.
"FM" chord button: I use my "pointer" (middle) finger for this.
      This combo gives you a nice (complete) Dm7 chord (tones: D, F, A, C).
I would then move directly (i.e., right below) to a "Bb diminished seventh" chord INSTEAD of an A7 type chord, and I would do it like this, in one easy move:
"Bb" bass button: I use my "pinkie" finger for this.
"Eo" (E diminished) chord button: I use my "thumb" for this.
This combo yields a Bbo7 chord with a Bb bass (Bb, Db, Fb, Abb).
Reasoning: I sacrificed the "A" tone to secure a "Bb" (the minor 9, in this case). The "A" MIGHT be able to be "picked up" (included) in the melody (right hand). Likewise, you MIGHT be able to pick up the "F" (the minor 13) with the right hand. In this particular case, to include EVERY tone of the A7m9m13 chord (I don't use "flat"-note terminology) could prove to be incredibly difficult--if not impossible. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your help.... If i get it right, the missing tones for the chord, from the left hand, could be played with the right hand within the melody while playing the song. Now i kind of get the idea for the future chords i would encounter with similar situation... Thanks again ....!!! Oops, previously i forgot to tell you that the song i was refering to is 'I ONLY HAVE EYES FOR YOU' in 'C'. The song begin with these 3 chords; Dm7, A7m9m13, Dm7.....

      Hi Gilles,
That chord--the A7.m9.m13--is still haunting me. If you DROP (i.e., forget about) the m13, you could play this:
      A Bass (pinkie) + C#o7 (thumb) = AM.m9 (i.e., an A Major with an added m9)
      OR
      A Bass (pinkie) + A7 Chord button (middle) + C#o7 (thumb) = A7.m9
For "entry & exit" with the Dm7, DROP the "7th" and simply use a Dm: D Bass (pinkie) + Dm Chord button (ring) = Dm
If you practice, you can make these chords. Yes, it's a bit awkward, but it makes a nice sound.
