5:43 be sure to put some sturdy gaffer tape around the headtube. That will protect the frame from getting severely scratched by the bag when mud and dirt build up during a ride. I also used two additional Vaude fastener straps to keep the bag high enough and above the front wheel even when the suspension sinks in completely.
Thanks Mikael...great demo, and that adaptor for the front fork is genius. I currently use a P-clamp on my suspension fork, which is okay, but I really like their solution. Thanks again for another fine video...hope you and family are well and surviving the lock down. Cheers!
I only use ortlieb for serious touring. 4 pannier bags and a small 24 litre duffle bag style ortlieb that sits transversely across the rear two. bags. Reliable, waterproof and high visibility. Thanks Mike.
I use a similar system. I can't get on with any bag that sits on the tubes as I sometimes feel it on my knees and it gets annoying. I think I'll stick to tried and tested touring set-up though I like the idea of a lighter gear set-up.
Hej, they look even better on the bike. Can’t wait to see them in action. I always pack, ride around the block and then see what needs tightening. The accessory bag looks ideal for bear spray 😂. Enjoy your trip, Ed
Sounds wise Ed! I might have jumped the gun a little bit. Looks like we're having -10C nights for the next week, so the trip is postponed a couple of days.
Few days ago I’ve bought new ortlieb framebag (the 4 litre one) and I’m amazed with it’s quality. I wanted to buy apidura but thanks to your previous movie I’ve decided to try out ortlieb. It’s great! Ps. Great vids, we need more :D
I probably won't go out cycling with the Sutra for a couple of weeks. To much ice and gravel still on the road. But I can post a photo on Instagram with the bags mounted on the Sutra. Watch out for that during the next couple of days.
Excellent! I have the full range of Ortlieb Bikepacking Bags, & the only issue I have is with attaching the accessory pack to the handlebar pack - when doing so you lose the option of using the very useful ‘bungee’ on front of the handlebar pack - luckily I have the Jones Bar so can attach the accessory pack separately to the front of the bar, although this is not ideal & bounces around a bit when going ‘off-road’ - apart from this excellent all round range of bags!
I thought about that myself when I set up the bags for this video. I have only usen them once since (damn snow that won't go away). But I still managed to get all the gear that I wanted with me so for now I can live without the extra packing opportunity on top of the handlebar bag. But I guess for a longer trip it might have been mode useful. Thanks for the insight, I'll include this subject in the review video when I'll finally get down to doing that one.
Thanks Mike. Yes I’m sure on a longer trip the extra space / bungee would definitely come in handy. I have been living in Thailand (Koh Samui) for 20 years so never have the problem of the snow not going away! Fantastic bikepacking / touring over this end of the world...
I'm curious to see how the suspension forks clamps hold up over time for the fork packs. I hope you get the opportunity to try them out soon. Atb, Tony
The mounts seemed pretty solid when I installed them. But like yiu say, after a some time on bumpy trails it's going to be interesting to find out. Thankfully Ortlieb has a 5 year guarantee.
I'm sure you know, but for anyone who doesn't, there's a silicone lube specifically for this type of zip which works really well and saves you ripping anything with excess force. Lots of types available from Amazon or canoe stores- it's used on dry suit zips.
Tip: Instead of naked flame, use a kettle and boil water and use the steam as it comes out to shrink wrap the tubing. You may have to boil it more than once but you do not risk damaging the rubber with a naked flame.
Sorry about that. I guess Amazon hasn't updated their stock yet. There are however plenty of different reseller. I'm sure you're able to find it if you just do a Google search.
I usa a Canon G7X Mark II for about 97% of the time. I also use a Sony action cam now and then, mostly for long decents and when it's raining. The G7X is fantastic to take on a bike tour, I can really recommended it. It's really small and at the same time it takes almost as good pictufes as my DSLR. Plus it has built-in stabilization which helps a lot.
@@BikeTouringMike thank you so much (or Tack så mycket , now i'm learning Swedish ,I am hopping to come back in this beautiful country as soon as possible ) .Now i have only a gopro hero 6 , but the sound quality is not so great and i want to buy another camera and probably will be a G7X Mark II . The quality of sound it's good when is windy ?
The sound quality is perhaps the biggest problem with every camera when it comes to filming bike rides. That is perhaps the only thing I don't like about the G7X, that it picks up wind noise. And it also makes some weird kind of sound when the shutter is trying to refocus when I am filming my videos indoors. So I use an external mic for thkse videos. The G7X Mark III is supposed to have a little bit of better sound, but I think you won't get rid of the wind noise no matter which camera you choose. That's why so many cycling videos have music in the background, to kind of hide all the wind noise.
I don't know, it all looks a bit fiddly to me with all those straps. I prefer the quick release systems modern panniers have. It seems to me that the pannier system is easier to handle when I need to take my stuff from the bike, in the tent or when I travel by train. Of course it is not as aerodynamic as bike bags, but if you don't take to much stuff with you the difference is not that big.
I’ve had this set up since it came out..the frame bag sucks..after a long day of riding you have to stick your hand into it,passing all those orange teeth that rake your wrists just to retrieve needed items while riding..like a dog biting your hand every time..I saw ortlieb USA two years ago at a show and mentioned it..no change in that horrible zipper.
I believe that they have just come out with a bag with roll closure system instead of having a zipper. It might be a bit tricker to get into, but might be gentler on wrists.
I really don't know how to repond to this comment. In what accent do you want me to speak then? French, German? This is how most Swedes speak English, mostly due to the fact that almost all of our pop culture references including TV, films and music come from the US. We hardly ever watch any TV shows from the UK, instead I would say well over 95% of the imported shows on TV are from the US. Hence the 'American' accent. It's nothing that we do to please anyone, it's just how we speak.

Love my Ortlieb bags. They are well made and easy to put on and adjust.
Excellent Mike ...thoughtful design... look forward to hearing how new kit compares to traditional tour set up🎥👍

Very thorough thank Mike. I have no further questions! Looking at a similar setup for use on my tourer too.
Glad you liked it Mike!
Great video Mike
Looking forward to seeing your next video

Thank you Patryk. Glad you like watching them. I too chose between those two brands when I was buuing mine since I wanted to have waterproof bags.
Very informative video, thank you Mike!
Great review. I would love to see the bags mounted up on your Sutra. I have the same bike.

Great tip Derek. I'll have to look into that.
Great video, what tape are you using, I’ve got a brand new bike and want to protect it but don’t want something as permanent as hell tape.

gosh that’s awesome update, but the price is so steep :D full sets of those is the same as my frame price
So the handlebar pack fits really well on the Sutra? No cable problems?
None whatsoever.
