I just got those same fork bags and they worked great riding the entire OTET 326 miles. I used them for my food and cooking as well as my air mattress and pillow
I've tried, the cargo cage with dry bags, mounted on the fork, around 2kg each. But i don't really like it. Especially with a narrow handlebar it makes too difficult to steering. really it's request a larger handlebar for these larger forks packs.
I suggest the smaller packs, if the biker use a standard handlebar (=shoulders). with a maximum weight to 1.5kg per pack.
Love these bikepacking videos. Thanks for doing them. I'm just getting into it myself with a hardtail. Would like to see a long term review of these after a full season or two. I just bought the Ortlieb Sport Packer Plus panniers from REI, and I can't wait to try them out this summer here in Alaska.
Bikepacking in Alaska in the summertime…😍😍😍
Have had the Ortlieb bike packing bags for 4 years now. Zero issues, zero wet gear. Some other good waterproof bag companies out there as well. My advice to anyone getting into bike packing, spend the money, get the good stuff.
Well timed video as these are on sale at REI. I’ll certainly be purchasing!
something I dont see mentioned it that the Quick Rack comes with a few bits of hardware than let you mount the Fork Packs to it. For my trips on my gravel bike even the Gravel Packs area a bit large and the 5.8L Fork Packs are a much better fit for me. 10l+ on the back each side and a little something strapped to the racks top deck along with the 4.1L sized Fork Packs on the forks is a great size for a light weight gravel bike. This video nailed the biggest pro to these bags over cages, dry bags, and straps... speed. love my cages and dry bags but a real pain to get to things while I am riding, no issue once I get to camp off they come but on the road you kinda dread unstrapping and removing what you need (also half full dry bags do not strap down as tight as full ones)
Great video, I use my hammock as a camp chair and I see no reason for the seat pack as I can just just strap a large dry bag to the top deck of the rack. I do like seat packs when I don't use the rack but only about 8-9 litters of light stuff like puffy coats, small down top quilts with any more weight/volume I would want an internal frame and clamps so I do not get waggle (think you didn't as it was half resting on the rack) The only up side to being 6'3" and riding 60cm bikes is I get a good amount of storage in my half frame bag... more than normal sized people with full frame bags :)
Yeah, with the bridge style hammock it’s harder to use it as a camp chair. You have to be careful that the poles don’t go up into the tarp and put a hole in it because it will really tilt up when you sit in it.
I would like to begin biking trip from Sicily to Calabria. I don't have anything😊 neither bike nor packings😊 1000 km. which bike I have to buy❤ thank you for this video ❤
A basic hard tail mountain bike would be the best all around for bike packing in my opinion.
My legs
My legs tend to hit frame packs as well. I have a "thin" frame pack (Apidura) that works for me. Not a lot of storage capacity, but nice for tools, snacks, etc. Great video - thanks!
I have the Ortieb seat pack. I did a credit card tour of the California coast with that bag and a small Ortlieb frame pack and had plenty of room. Tail wag is an issue. The way you used your quilt on the rack would help to stabilize the seat pack. My knees hit the frame pack as well. I have since bought the Tailfin rack and panniers. I haven’t had a chance to use them. The bags are 20 liters so there’s plenty of room for a credit card tour with these bags only. I was impressed by the quality of Ortlieb’s bags.
