    I prefer credit card touring, it's hard enough biking all day, I like to relax in a nice place for over night. I don't care if that's weak or whatever, it's just what I like.

    I have one of those bag clips for the Varia. I also have a bike rack mount for it, both are available at some 3d print shop. The bag mount can be a bit fiddly to set up so the varia actually points toward the rear and not towards the sky or the ground but generally works well.
    Also, on my touring bike I have a K-edge stem ount for my Wahoo. It's essentially a steerer tube spacer with a computer mount protruding forward and it works really well! Make sure to get the adjustable version, I believe there is a non-adjustable version too, the adjustable version allows you to angle the head unit up or down.
    It sure looks like youo have a LOT of stuff on your bike. I have found that making your sleep system smaller and ligher is one of the areas really worth throwing cash at. A camping mattress that takes as much space as a water bottle, and a sleeping bag that takes as much space as two bottles will really make your luggage shrink a lot! I sometimes leave my tent at home and sleep in public shelters (which you might not have in the US) in the forest, which means I only need sleeping bag, mattress, stove, and food. I can fit all of that in the handlebar bag and the saddle bag!
    You might also want to have a look at the British Tailfin rack system, they have a rack with an integrated 20l bag on top, that essentially makes the saddle bag redundant.
    And lastly, fork bags might be your friends. They are basically drybags that fit a big water bottle mount like the Chris King King cage, that mount on the fork legs.

    I will not ride without my Varia. Outside of my helmet, it's the most important piece of equipment I own.

    Get some compression bags for your quilts that should give you some extra room.

    If you're already using rack mount some trunk bag or if you don't need structure you can just use drybag

    The Ortlieb folks are pronouncing it the way they are because they are German and those are their language’s pronunciation rules. It is a German company so you could argue that that is the “correct” way of saying it but everyone is going to default to the pronunciation rules of their own language. Unfortunately English has no such rules. 😆

    What's the route for the tour? Sorry if I've missed it in previous videos. Wondering if you're going after a singletrack samurai route or if this is a tour all of your own making.

      It was the forgotten Florida route to put on by single track samurai indeed. We had 34 riders. Several videos to come!

    Hi Clint. I've been a follower of your channel for a while and I'm glad you're getting into bike packing and loaded touring. It will be really interesting getting your take on it I guess coming from your racier background. I suspect you may have some issues with the bungee cords. I would suggest compression straps or even voile straps to a better job for a fraction of the weight. Could Dawson be swayed for the next one?

    Clint - What a coincident I came across this video. Just got back from an overnight trip about 70 miles each way on my Cannondale gravel bike. Had similar setup on my bike with a few differences - no rear rack therefore, no panniers, 2 small fork bags, 15 liters handlebar bag. My frame bag is a roll up instead of the zipper style which I did have at one point until the frame strap came undone during RAGBRAI. Took it back to REI and they swapped out with the roll up since Ortlieb quit making the zipper model. I am hesitant in putting a rear rack since I enjoy gravel riding and don't want the back end to be heavy. If I had to put a rear rack, I'd go with the Aeroe system except they are just as expensive and I don't want to switch to another brand since I already own several Ortlieb bags.

    I didn’t like the frame bag because my knees hit it as well. The under quilt is good to help stabilize the seat pack. Tail wag is an issue with those bags. Packing the seat pack to minimize tail wag is a learning curve. I prefer credit card touring. I rode the central coast of California, staying in hotels only.

    Ortlieb fork bags, Revelate Design- Mountain Feedbags and Rok straps are your friends. I would loose the seatpack and get more weight forward. Also maybe a 13 liter Sea to Summit Big River dry bag as well. Your rear rack looks great and works well on that bicycle.

    I'm like you, I need lots of testing before I decide what's included for a bikepacking trip. With route and distance planning I'm tentative because it never works out the way I plan. I'm a solo rider/camper and Varia radar is always with me, even at night when camped near a pond so I get an alert if (ever) a gator approaches my tent🐊😮

    I'd like a Varia, but they don't make a mount that will fit to a rack. I guess Garmin thinks that only roadies use Varia. Noone else is allowed to use it.

    • @ClintGibbs

      @ClintGibbs  5 месяцев назад

      @@greghunt6183 it was literally my only option. There are no outside mounts on the bags to clip anything. It was that or the jersey. Worked perfectly fine for three days. I’d rather do that than ride without the Varia.

    Hey Clint, replace those bungy cords with non-elastic straps and nylon clips that allow you to make a loop and also tighten the loop. I‘ve cycle-toured several tens of thousands of kilometers over the past 30 years, lots of it on gravel, and bungy cords were nothing but trouble every time.
    The last shot you showed us with your plan-B packing looks top-heavy.
    Have a great ride!

    Did a 500 miler from north ga to daytona a few years ago in 7 days camping all the way. Only real advice I have is if the sand gets deep keep the weight off the front. I was on a steel jamis and the front was a little waggly. It wanted to knife in deep sand. The hills were not really to bad with the weight. the flats it might have even helped carry speed. The wind off the ocean was a whole different animal. That was brutal. The view did help take the sting out though.

    • @socaljoe
      @socaljoe 5 месяцев назад

      @twowheelslater7112 I get what you are saying about the front weight and cutting through the sand. I have a steel Renegade myself and have a terrible "wiggly"/shimmy going down hills unless I load the front end using panniers. In bike packing mode it's not a problem but in touring mode with panniers it's not a fun ride with the bike oscillating as I go down hill. I also run at least 47mm to help with the sand. Just wondering as a fellow Jamis owner you have the same shimmy since I feel it's a flaw in the design

    • @twowheelslater7112
      @twowheelslater7112 5 месяцев назад

      @@socaljoe I think it helps the ride unloaded. I just don't think its an ideal frame for bikepacking. I replaced it with a Niner rlt 9 steel. It rides far better with weight but rides stiffer unloaded. Horses for courses I suppose. Overall I love the Jamis though. I put over 10K on that frame.
