- In todays video, we are looking at the brand new Origin Effects M-EQ DRIVER
This cleaver liitle overdrive pedal not only sounds fantastic but it has a great trick up its sleave.
About the M-EQ Driver:
The M-EQ DRIVER is a Mid Booster & Drive pedal, based on a vintage Pultec® studio EQ. These passive EQs from the 1950s are still sought after today, thanks to their highly musical, versatile EQ curves and the ability to overdrive their push-pull valve output stage. We have recreated the behaviour of this timeless, passive EQ and optimised it for electric guitar.
Important Features of the M-EQ Driver:
The M-EQ DRIVER offers three different mid boost frequencies and is capable of a clean mid boost, all the way to thick, resonant distortion. With a moderate mid boost and higher DRIVE settings, amp-like, mid-forward drive tones are available. Pushing more mids into the push-pull output stage will result in more overdrive at the chosen frequency, resulting in some howling, “cocked wah” sounds. Try balancing the DRIVE and MID controls for a range of subtle and not-so-subtle tones.
The M-EQ DRIVER also features our Adaptive Circuitry, applied to the CUT control. Based on the High Frequency Attenuation band of a Pultec®, the CUT control progressively removes treble as it is increased. With the ADAPT switch engaged, this high-end roll-off is reduced as the pedal cleans up, allowing for a smooth transition from warm overdrive to bright clean tones by adjusting your guitar’s volume knob or playing dynamics.
M-EQ Driver Features List:
• Based on the legendary Pultec® studio EQs of the 1950s
• Choice of mid boost frequencies
• Adaptive Cut control responds to volume changes and playing dynamics
• Transformer driven circuitry
• Valve-like push-pull output stage
• Ultra-high input impedance
• High-quality buffered bypass
• Premium components throughout
• Designed and built in England
For this video we are plugging the m-eq driver straight into a matchless independence 35 amplifier
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Another great video guys. Just one thing tho...we didn't hear the 'before' tone of the base amp sound with the pedal turned off so there wasn't any reference to what the pedal was actually doing. Just always nice to hear the before tone first. Still a great vid and a great pedal 👍
Thanks for checking the pedal out!
If anyone has any questions, feel free to give me a shout here or via our own social media accounts where we'll be hanging out all day
Seemed quite noisy when not playing, but volume up on the guitar. Is that the pedal, or perhaps lights or power, or....? (Love you guys, no insult intended to your studio environment!)
@@gnormmusic3172 Thats P90/singlecoil noise
Those tones are a thing of beauty. Keep up the good work guys.
The adaptive demo switching pickups was a great demonstration, nice job guys.
It’s only mid January but I think it’s already up for pedal of the year. I’ll definitely have it on my board next to my origin revival drive and my Cali 76 very soon! I think the only thing that would make it better would be if they made it 2 channels for a separate clean and dirty!
Good pedal and good report on it, too. Best from Munich
Another great video, as usual, and James’ technical terminology (“we’re feeding it more beans”) is what keeps me coming back for more. 😂
I think we need to make a t shirt with that printed on it.
@@TheStudioRats I'll buy one!!!
Great demo, great pedal.
I struggled with the RD Compact and the RD Hot Rod Compact due to the lack of a mid control, which I feel they really need. This one solves that problem, and the adaptive circuit is brilliant.
Sounds great!
Great sounding and useful tool indeed 😃😎👍
Tasty bit of kit!
Fantastic review, thank you. Mordi
That sounds great!!!!
In the last 24 hours I've watched lots of videos on this pedal. For me, the sounds you're getting are the best of the lot.
I want to buy it... but my wallet is aching after y'all convinced me to get the Jam Pink Flow. So worth it though, god that thing is amazing!
Nice one for buying a pink flow. What a killer pedal!
great demo! Only thing is I wish you guys would have used a real amp ~ that's got to be a modeler for the base tone, yeah? Also would have liked to hear more on/off a/b w/the base tone. That said, great video and nice playing.
Great box for that thing clean/dirty how's the shed coming along?
I don't like OD pedals much. I'm a fuzzy guy and amp in a pedal fan. But this thing sounds awesome. Origin Effects is killing it with the quality tone factor. I'm impressed with all their $tuff.
There is no way I could ever have just one overdrive pedal. Physically impossible. That’s just a fact.
Good good good good, freakin good!
Joyo sweet baby (and similar clones) can kinda do that clean dirty trick.
“Feeding it with more beans” 😂
damn, that sounds awesome! I don't "NEED" another pedal! ;) any idea of price?
“Pedals that fight back and hurt your feet.”😂
is it ok to stack with hot rod compact?
So, I don't need the Revival Drive Compact, Halcyon, Magma57 and Deluxe61? 🤔
Hey guys! Has anyone tried this pedal in front of the Boss GTK Core? Is it possible to still get the sound and responsiveness demonstrated here?
I stack the m-eq with the halcyon green. The notes sing out of the guitar.

Which amp are you playing?
It’s all in the video description, it was a Matchless Independence
@@TheStudioRats Was the amp mic'd or was it going through a loadbox / speaker sim
"The Only Drive You Need On Your Board?"
I've lost count of the amount of times I've heard this.....this time it may be true.
Until the next time 😄 GAS alert
every single time a new pedal comes out. It's tiring.
One word: Jars.
Pull as in dull not pull as in pool.
Pultec is Pulse Techniques.
Turn some knobs during play so people can see AND hear just what’s happening to the tone. Not just cut to a gloss set up with the pedal on already and talk about how unbelievable it is.
Shit for that matter the CORNERSTONE GLADIO.MO BETTA.
I love the studio rats, but origin is the most overrated stuff ever built. Wasted 600 on the big model hot rod paper weight. They'll not get any more of my money.
Why isn't the pedal bypassed regularly so that you can see what the pedal is doing and how much? So the demonstration makes zero sense. A pity
Pooltec? seriously lads..........
You say potato etc…..
@@TheStudioRats Lame.....
Try the BONDI DEL MAR. BLOWS THIS THING AWAY.ORIGIN ALWAYS NEEDS TOO MAY BUTTONS,SWITCHES,KNOBS.A GOOD BUILDER DOSENT NEED ALL THE BULLSHIT.
Don't forget ITS ALL ABOUT YOUR AMP.FULL STOP.
