    Like many people, I suffered financially during the pandemic, so I flew home to the US, and took up driving delivery last year. In my last month of Doordash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats, I earned a little over $12,000 in the entrepreneurship venture. This video shows how you can do the same-step by step. It was a lot of hard work, and I feel relieved to have the phase of my life behind me. I'm using the money I made in the last 5 months as seed money for our business, and to travel full time with my family. Currently in Tulum, Mexico.

      @@MsShelly32 I briefly used a second phone, but it turned into more problems than it was worth. One phone that works well is probably better than two you have to juggle while driving. There is no shame in being a delivery driver. Delivery drivers are the backbone of this country's commerce. The only thing people should be ashamed of is, if they aren't giving a 100% of an honest days work in the job they are working. You need to re adjust your outlook.

    • @callmelil

      I have addressed this in other comments, but basically it came out wrong. Lots of people who know me, know I do this job, and I’m in no way ashamed of it. Between my email subs and IG following, I have 25k people following me as a photographer and content marketer/creator. It’s how I’ve built my career, and I was reluctant to risk that image…has nothing to do with delivery drivers or their value, and my photography career DID suffer because of this video

      Just be careful, burnout is a real thing and can make you depressed. I think it was important for me to have an end date, or otherwise something to look forward to. $12k was my last month, but I’d have a hard time doing that month after month with nothing else to do. Memorize where the massive 6 floor apartments are on the map so you can reject/cancel them. Half the time on those is finding parking, trying to get a code from customer, waiting for an elevator only to find it requires a key card to use, going up the wrong side of the apartment, so you have to go all the way back down and find the right door. One time I got stuck in a parking garage because the elevator I used to get in had a keycode, but I forgot what floor I parked on so I got off on the wrong floor only to discover the elevator door on that floor was a key card instead of a code, so I was literally stuck on that floor shouting for help as I circled around looking for a staircase.

    I have learned to be more assertive with businesses. I have walked up to the counter at Mcdonald's and was immediately told by the manager to please wait because they were servicing drive-thru orders and someone would be with me in 5-10 minutes. I just loudly asked if they had my Doordash order ready and one of the girls working in the drive-thru handed it to me. I was the only person in Mcdonald's lobby and if I hadn't been saying anything I would have been standing there for 10 minutes while they already had the order ready. I get paid to drive not wait.
    Another time I showed up at Walmart and waited over 45 minutes for a $3 order. I went to the pickup door and went inside and asked them what the status of the Doordash order was for 4 items. They immediately started telling them that I couldn't be inside their pick-up area and I told them that I had been trying to call them for 45 minutes and that they wouldn't answer the phone. Walmart employees told me that they were too busy to answer the phone. I demanded to see a manager to find out why they were so slow and then someone quickly showed up with my order to get me to leave. As I was leaving a line of angry people had begun forming behind me because they had been waiting over 2 hours to get their orders. I have since decided to not take Walmart orders anymore because I am paid to drive and not to sit and wait.
    At Papa John's I was told that the wait was over 2 hours and the employee tried to get me to cancel the order. I told them that there is no way to cancel the order from the driver's end that all I could do is alert Doordash that the order wasn't ready and tell them why there was a delay and unassign the order.

    Am I setting myself back by driving til 4am or overnight? Your take on drive thrus?

    • @callmelil
      @callmelil  3 года назад +10

      Great questions. I rarely take the order and pay orders, but sometimes they are irresistibly large. In those cases, I will often call the restaurant ahead of time. I call in the order, if they answer, I ask how long it’s going to take, place the order, and then will usually go accept another order from another app, depending on the time they give me. Sometimes I’ll get lucky, and the restaurant will be on my route to another restaurant. I’ll drop in, place the order, and then go take the other order while it’s being prepared.
      Sometimes, it doesn’t work out and I’ll have to cancel an order, but I can usually make it work as long as I’m following my other rules (ie never accepting shitty orders to begin with an avoiding traffic). I would not take them if it didn’t increase my $/hour, and so I rarely take them.
      Some people in my area have been successful with late nights, but in my experience, orders are more scarce, and my money is (at best) as good as during the day, so if I want to work more hours, I do better in the mornings-I usually won’t work before 8am or after 10pm.
      Sometimes, I will accept a drive thru order if I’m right next to the restaurant, and can see how long it is. Rarely, otherwise-even really big ones often get so big because people keep canceling orders, so you’ll get there thankful for a $20 order and realize it’s going to take an hour + to even get through

      Ok the 4 orders per hour sounds impossible unless the order is ready, every time, the traffic is never bad, you find each customer location without incident and of course the order is about 2 miles. I think in over 2000 deliveries I've had 4 deliveries in an hour happen five times. Generally I would make 25 max in those hour blocks. I can think about hourly, I just set a daily goal and try to hit it. The business is just to hit or miss minute to minute to forecast much.

    This is a great video, I’ve done Uber eats for two years and within 2 months they deactivated me twice and now they’ve made their final decision not to reactivate me, I’ve never had any issues out of the whole time I’ve done Uber eats, their reason for deactivation is low rating. I loved Uber eats, it’s the best paying compared to door dash. In my area door dash is like pocket change but with Uber eats. I could actually pay a bill with that money,

    • @callmelil
      @callmelil  2 года назад

      That was similar in my market. Uber Eats was not as busy as Doordash, but orders were way bigger, so money was similar for less work. Delivery has picked up and I was thinking of doing this challenge for a month. I mean 10K would be fucking awesome for the nest egg Ive been trying to build. I want to haul ass for this goal. The only thing that's discouraging is the brutal 12 hour work days{My ave: $27/hr) which could lead to: 1) No time for friends & family obligations and 2) Possible burnout from ever doing delivery again and this is sort of my bread & butter . I could lower the hours for better work-life balance but I wont make nearly as much. How did you overcome those kinda challenges while trying to achieve your goal?

    • @callmelil
      @callmelil  2 года назад +11

      Really good question. My answer is pretty me-specific though. My wife is Swedish (and not American). We normally live in London, but I brought her and my daughters to the US. We stayed with my parents, we traveled a bit along the east coast, but my wife is only allowed to stay in the US for 90 days..so I sent her and my daughters off to Mexico at the end of it. When you have a family thousands of miles away, life outside of work becomes kinda meaningless. So, it was easy for me to just keep my head straight. I had my ticket to Mexico, and everything outside of delivery seemed kinda pointless.
      It is a quite depressing reality, I'm not going to lie. It was very hard and emotional at times. Because of that, I think having an end date or an end goal is really important. Having little things to look forward to is also important. It might not be the answer you were looking for, but I hope that helps

    The only time I take orders from different apps is if I am 2-4 minutes away from dropping off my first order. Then I am okay with doing that. Especially if the next order I am getting is a solid one. But I agree multi-apping orders at the same time doesn't seem ethical.
    Also I agree with your 1st point. REJECT ALL THE CRAP if you can. It really is about knowing your market and the time of day though. I probably will take those $5-$6 Dunkin orders on a SAT morning as long as they go by the $1/mile rule. But those same orders going 10 miles can fuck right off.
    I find it ironic how people shit on us delivery drivers when it's not just picking up food and dropping it off. I mean yeah that is the job. But to maximize your money you need to plan and know what your costs are going to be in terms of burning gas.

Anyways, with this vehicle change I started doing Instacart, but I've noticed when using the app and especially when using GPS at same time my phone slows down incredibly and even will have odd glitches ( things like back button quits working, or I try to message customer and my keyboard won't pop up anymore requiring me to restart phone which is a nightmare when say on delivery following gps to customers house therefore having to pull over). I have a moto Z4 so about 2 or 3 yrs old and only using 32% of my storage. Do you not have issues running all these apps or do u just have a top of the line phone bc I've for sure lost good orders from my phone not loading when just running Instacart even with Verizon coverage

      @@jacobwhicker8423 I use an iPhone 8 plus, and I have also had some issues. This might sound odd, but mine would act up when it got hot, my gps would quit working, my apps would wig out. If I left it in front of the fan/AC, I hardly ever had any issues. Maybe try that if you haven’t already.
      If you think your issues can be solved by using two phones, then by all means, get a second phone. Just note that it will present its own challenges. I was mainly referring to having two screens distracting you, and having to handle both while driving. If two apps on the same phone are notifying you of new deliveries, it’s easy to switch back and forth, but if two phones are notifying you, switching back and forth is more complicated.
      The problems 2 phones present are not insurmountable though, and maybe the upsides outweigh the downsides for you
      PS: I also tried Lyft, and it SUCKS compared to delivery. More money and you don’t have to deal with people or drive the speed limit haha

If you do it every morning 6 days a week it will get your blood flowing. Drink a smoothie with 7 different kinds of fruit after workout. You will have energy all day. After about 2 or 3 weeks you will notice a change in your energy level. Things will get easier. Blood flowing hard 1st thing in the morning is the best thing you can do for yourself. It will help almost every other aspect of your life improve. Good luck man, you can do it. At least give it a 30 day challenge and see if you feel different. Solid advice for how to maximize your earnings doing gig delivery work. Although this was also during the pandemic when deliveries exploded cause nobody wanted to go out for their food. So maybe now that the pandemic is over 12k in a month would be a lot harder to reach for sure. It’s funny, RUclips videos about food delivery seems to be divided. Half the videos are about how gig work is dead, that uber & doordash will go out of business or how you can’t make any money anymore…while the other half of youtube videos say how you can make $2,000 to $3,000 a week doing it. 😂 it’s either feast or famine.

      As per your feast or famine comment, it's kinda funny: around 2 months before this $12k month, I talked 2 of my 3 siblings into doing gig delivery. They constantly complained about it, while not making anything close to what I did (in the same market, at the same time). I did my best to walk them through my strategies, but they were never really able to pull it off. They're both still doing it on and off, and they are pretty much making the same amount of money as they were back then. I love my siblings, but the only conclusion I could really come up with is that there's a certain grit/tenacity required to make this kind of money-tenacity that they just don't have. And maybe most people don't, I don't know

      Restaurants do sometimes have waits. I’ll let you in on something I didn’t mention in the video: I am usually about 5 min late to the restaurant. I accept my next order before my current one is finished (running 3 apps), and I will finish that one up before moving in to the next one. It cuts down on wait time a lot more than you might think, and it’s not so late that anyone really notices
      Also, keep track of which restaurants make you wait. Even keep notes and compile statistics. Figure out which ones are ultimately losing you money and axe them

    Hmmm the idea of not sitting in a parking lot & instead driving around is interesting. Knowing the boundaries of the mini-zone is key... But I am unsure how to figure that out.
    I've just been parking, and then walking back and forth in a 100yd area, and it doesn't work that great as far as getting a ton of orders.
    Would you suggest driving back and forth in a .5 mile area? Or how do you figure out where this zone within a zone has it's boundaries so that you can go in and out of it repeatedly?

    • @callmelil
      @callmelil  2 года назад

      I believe, generally speaking, 100yds is too small an area to make a noticeable difference most of the time, but it will depend on the restaurant, market, proximity to other restaurants, etc..you can imagine it like this:
      Every order puts an imaginary border around a restaurant. Exactly where that border is will depend on the market, dropoff location, current road conditions, traffic, etc..and it's not a perfect circle. It will be based on the road. But you, as a dasher within that border, will make the same amount as any other dasher within that border for the same order (So you have the same chances as anyone else within the border to receive said order).
      Let's just say it's 1/2 a mile for a particular order. Someone right next to the restaurant would have the same chance of getting offered the order as someone right on the edge of that border...1/2 a mile away.
      The person who is right next to the restaurant is NOT within the border for any other orders/restaurants, but the person who is on the edge of that border, happens to fall inside the border for 3 other orders from other restaurants. ie, the second person has a greater chance of being offered _an order_ (because it can come from 4 restaurants instead of 1).
      Now, the first person can still get orders from those other restaurants, but not before closer people have rejected them.
      The reason I suggest driving around is because that border moves around. It depends on what the TOTAL distance is for the order-entirely on how much Doordash would have to pay based on their own model. What I used to do is drive back and forth along the main road-never turning into a parking lot or doing anything that would "cost" time if I got an order going somewhere else. The best spot is roughly a 2 mile stretch in my market, and it would shift throughout the day (breakfast is busy in the south, dinner in the north).
      To answer your question, it's hard to say, because it's market dependent, but hopefully the explanation of what DD has written about their algorithm can help you figure out your own market.

    • @callmelil
      @callmelil  Год назад

      The “zones” in this context are not DD hotspots or similar if that’s what you’re thinking. For context, I have to start with this: Every restaurant has its own pay zones-ie how much an order pays for a certain distance away from the restaurant. What those are will vary depending on your market, time of day, number of dashers on the road, restaurant history, and about 1,000 other factors.
      Each order also has a time threshold. Meaning, anyone in the zone in some time period has equal opportunity for an order.
      Driving around typically puts you in more restaurants’ “zones” at any given time for two reasons:
      1) As an example, an order going from restaurant X to house Y might pay $Z to any dasher within 1 mile. All dashers within 1 mile have equal opportunity to the order-but the ones driving around will often also be closer to OTHER restaurants. Meaning they can be competitive for MORE orders.
      2) briefly explained above, there is not an exact time but rather a window of when Doordash will deliver an order to a dasher. That window changes based on the location of dashers and the history of the restaurant’s ability to deliver on time, among other factors. If you’ve ever gotten on the freeway only to get an order that takes you the other direction (having to wait til the next exit to turn around), this is why. You just entered the time window of when Doordash thinks someone should arrive, when you previously would have been too early. When I was doing Doordash, I’d get those regularly, and more often than not there were people waiting in the parking lot when I arrived. Those people didn’t have a clue
      In large part, driving around gives you more options. That doesn’t mean you get “better” orders, just more of them to choose from. My running acceptance rate on DD was like 3%. If you want to read more about how the algorithm works straight from the horse’s mouth, look up Doordash Labs. They publish more material than you’ll ever be able to get through.

    • @callmelil
      @callmelil  2 года назад

      A couple things wrong with this. I haven't done delivery in over a year, but from when I was doing it:
      - I have done well over 10,000 deliveries and reject about 97% of what I'm offered. I would not necessarily expect to see a $16 offer in "80 deliveries". In fact, I have seen (and rejected) over 100 $3-5 orders IN A ROW from DD (when I get a 0% acceptance rate). The more you reject, the more you see/have to choose from
      - There are certainly differences from one market to the next, but that doesn't mean what you see is "standard" and what I see isn't. I have dashed in about a dozen markets, and generally the smaller the market, the worse it is. 75% of Americans live within the bounds of a market that is as big or bigger than mine. Not all, but most of those 75% should be able to hit numbers like mine if they really work at it. That might not include you, but don't act like your results are typical.
      - "15 min between orders sometimes." That is pretty normal during the slowest parts of the day in any market. It is really predictable, and you can choose when to lower your standards or take a break. I compiled stats on what to expect each hour, and generally do something else during those times (ie grab lunch, go hiking, record stock video, etc.). I go over that in a little more detail in my Q&A: ruclips.net/video/21ZzW-GrQPQ/видео.html

As someone pointed out in the comments, and I saw myself, Uber keeps track of all "online" miles in your year end statement, so I suppose you could also use that for simplicity's sake.
      Taxes aren't that complex, you just insert 3 1099's instead of 1. Miles are the same, it's not like you count them 3 separate times. I also add in my food expenses, etc..but that doesn't really change by multi-apping

      If you do this job for long, think about what a hybrid can save you. Going from $5/hour to $1.50/hour in expenses…at 40 hours/week, that’s $600/month in gas savings alone. If you’re working hours like I was, it’s $1200/month. My 2005 Prius was only $2500-well worth the cost. Hell, at 14mpg, you might be better off renting a hybrid or rental car week to week.

      Ok I saw the part where you said 350-400 daily. How many hours did you put in a day to reach your goal?

      If you can get on Uber Eats too, I’d recommend it. Even if not many orders come in, they’re often bigger. I was working a touch over 12 hours/day for 29 days out of a 31 day month. That’s the average, it was probably more on the weekends and less during the week-obviously just depending on how good the money is

    I told myself not to go to ihop on a “quick” $6 order. The damn employees were about to fight,😭 my order sat, and the customer address was inaccurate.

      That’s called “Tuesday”, man! They happen, you just can’t be scared to “unassign” yourself.

    Curious with these delivery apps, if you can deduct mileage expense on US taxes filing a Schedule C?
