Terrific performance by a truly(!) first-rate orchestra. Thank you for doing this, even during COVID. I physically applaud every time I hear it; it is that good.

Good to see Franck being appreciated at last.
This is the first time I've truly felt/inwardly understood this symphony. Until this great performance, I had experienced it as overblown and therefore not convincing. Here its power and integrity is revealed by great musicians, solemn, magnificent, troubled.
I think that, to complete the work of knowledge, you should also be familiar with some historical recordings: I recommend those of Wilhelm Furtwängler and Guido Cantelli (my favourite!). Greetings!

To the reviewer who says the tempo is too fast I would say you need to be more open minded and listen to different performances/interpretations of the same piece whenever possible. You certainly have a right to your opinion. However, there is nothing invalid about this performance. It is wonderful. Listening to a greater variety of performances beyond your favorite opens up your mind a bit it and may make you even more appreciative of the performances you do value most. Sometimes you may be surprised when your preferences change.
Wunderschöne und detaillierte Aufführung dieser einzigartigen doch perfekt komponierten Sinfonie mit farbenreichen doch perfekt entsprechenden Tönen aller Instrumente. Der zweite Satz klingt echt schön und auch mysteriös. Der intelligente und geniale Dirigent leitet das hoch funktionelle Orchester im gut analysierten Tempo und mit sorgfältig kontrollierter Dynamik. Es ist sehr schwierig, dieses Meisterwerk ohne Langweile zu spielen. Diese Leistung ist eine seltene Ausnahme davon. Danke wie immer!

All those who claimed that French composers can’t write symphonies are here totally confounded! Here played by a German orchestra with sensitivity and power and emotion, revealing the symphonic structure brilliantly. A great conductor.

An exceptionally fine performance--and a "studio" one at that, without the added stimulus of a live audience. Maestro Altinoglu is not afraid to bring out the brass when needed, whereas some renditions I've heard don't do that, perhaps for fear that this will make the orchestra sound like an organ. The tempi and ensemble playing are spot on. Great woodwind playing, too.
One of the imbecilic criticisms of this masterwork was that Franck made the orchestra sound like an organ (Franck was a master organist and improviser--he actually went around France demonstrating organs of the master organ builder, Cavaillé-Coll, apart from his long organist tenure at the church of Sainte Clotilde). This is a ridiculous criticism, often leveled against this work, simply because there is no artistic principle that says an orchestra should never sound like an organ. Romantic-era organ builders worked hard to make the organ sound symphonic, after all.
The other imbecilic criticisms made included "no true symphony employs an English horn" and "no true symphony has only three movements". Regarding this latter criticism, Franck actually embedded a scherzo section in the second movement.
The poor D minor Symphony had a rough reception. Even Franck's wife didn't like it because of its sensual moments. Its premiere had to be given by the Conservatoire's student orchestra. True to his mostly serene nature, Franck was unmoved by all this and was full of enthusiasm for more groundbreaking compositions to follow. Unfortunately, he died of pleurisy just about a year after the symphony's completion.
This symphony is perhaps more maligned in print than any other in the active repertoire as being melodically and structurally uninteresting, pretentious, and unduly repetitive. But those maligners forget to mention one thing: IT WORKS, and therefore remains a popular staple in the symphonic literature and concert stage. Atinoglu's performance works also, even if the vigor and drama of his interpretation may compromise some of its breadth and beauty.
Actually, it's not really a staple these days - it's rather fallen out of favour. Once every conductor worth his salt programmed it, but nowadays it's become something of a rarity. This performance is therefore doubly welcome!

Je découvre moi aussi cette superbe symphonie avec très grand plaisir. Les musiciens sont toujours aussi généreux, expressifs et talentueux. La direction est impécable, tout est réuni pour apprécier toutes les subtilités et la grandeur de l'oeuvre. Bravo.
Une question me taraude depuis les différents confinements, l'orchestre s'est produit à maintes reprises sans public (c'est la cas ici ) : que ressentent les musiciens et le chef d'orchestre devant cette grande salle vide ?
Auch ich entdecke mit großer Freude diese großartige Symphonie. Die Musiker sind immer noch großzügig, ausdrucksstark und talentiert. Die Regie ist tadellos, alles kommt zusammen, um alle Feinheiten und die Größe der Arbeit zu würdigen. Jubeln.
Eine Frage beschäftigt mich seit den diversen Lockdowns, das Orchester ist oft ohne Publikum aufgetreten (hier ist dies der Fall): Wie fühlen sich die Musiker und der Dirigent vor diesem großen leeren Raum?
