      After just now revisiting this?
      I've concluded that perhaps you are the only other person I know, within casual correspondence, that is as equally obsessed with the "Homme sound" as I am.
      Unfortunately, my budget hasn't allowed me to venture as far down that gear rabbit hole as you have, but DAMN?
      I must honestly say that you've freaking NAILED IT! Nice freakin job amigo!!
      My main "tone chasing" interests basically still reside within the first three QOTSA albums. When I immediately noticed the tonal characteristics of mutual influences like Greg Gin of Black Flag?! Especially within songs like "Tension Head" from Rated R?! As soon as I connected those dots? My obsession began.
      The personally limited attempts I still mainly use are a Catalinbread SFT MkII with an OD-1/SD-1 and an EQ. Occasionally I will throw in a POG as well as various delays and modulations. My goal has been to capture some of that raw untamed midrange "bite", and develop my own diverse pallet from there artistically.
      Still quite jealous of that Eastwood copy BTW lol.
      Currently looking for a pair of Vintage DiMarzio Super 2's to throw in my LP, though I may settle for the current retail productions.
      You should seriously do a "How to Sound Like Kyuss" video, but you must remember...
      Josh exclusively played on the neck pickup throughout that time. That not only sounds like something that would awesome to watch, but seems like it would be fun as hell to make on your end.
      I apologize for leaving such a HUGE comment. I honestly do it everywhere. It's kind of my thing. LMAO!
      Great freakin video man. Stay Gold!
      Peace Love Unity & Respect

    qotsa first 3 records tone is basically always a combination of the Ovation with an sd-1 always on (vol. max, tone max, gain zero) used as a treble boost (remember that he loves Billy Gibbons tone) with different amps. Live tone until 2003 it's the same but with the V4b mainly. Live, when he didn't use the sd-1 always on, but only for solos, it's because he used a Dallas Rangemaster clone made by Dan Druff (his guitar tech). You can hear this very clearly on the 2002 tour with Grohl. The Maestro/Stone Deaf thing is based on the same principle, he's boosting the high-mids, in the same way and around the same freqs of the Sd-1 or the Rangemaster Clone (it's a one knob black pedal usually in the middle of his two boards from that period, except for the 2002 tour where's first in the chain). All these infos are solid gold :)
    For the bass sound try to cut out all the mids and push bass & treble to maximum as Oliveri stated in an interview, and crank the amp volume/gain (no pedals with bass).

    • @ItsAlwaysSammy

    • @meexiko
      @meexiko 4 года назад +12

      @@ItsAlwaysSammy 1998/1999 tour he used V4b with two cabs (They look like Marshall B-cabs, I don't know about the speakers) at least for most of the shows here on youtube. In the earliest shows from that period he also used the Tubeworks head from Kyuss, but mainly as a pre-amp connected to the power section of a V4b or a Sunn Micro-T with Ampeg 8x10 cab. Then for Rated R tour he started to use the VT-40 as main amp (look at the vintage vinyl show, NJ), usually together with the V4b with two Ampeg 9x10 cab. Later he moved on to Orange 4x12 cabs instead of the ampegs (at least in the euro-festival shows from 2001), or Mesa 4x12 cabs in other shows (they look like Mesa cabs, I'm not sure).
      2002 tour with Grohl it's vt40 or vt22 + 4x12 Mesa cab (one side) / Tech 21 Trademark 60 2x12 + 4x12 Mesa cab (the other side). Note that on the effect loop of the Tech 21 there are his Ehx Bass Micro-synth and I think (I'm quite sure) a Deluxe Memory Man (both pedals are on top of the amp). Listen to 2002 Southside festival here on youtube and you can clearly hear the micro-synth always on on some tracks, it sounds "weird" on Regular John or Walking on the Sidewalks.
      2003 tour it's Vt40 and v4b+2x12 Ampeg cab., while Troy was getting more space in the band.
      I don't bother too much about Josh tone after this tour, because Qotsa became a total different band, more complex and articulate in the tone, and I think that the Maestro/Stone Deaf is filtering too much with the hollow bodies guitars, it's too much "hi-fi" sounding, too "perfect", but that's my personal taste. I like what they are doing now, but I prefer way more what they did back then, when the Ovation was the axe. :)
      I have more info on the pedals too if u care.

    • @meexiko
      @meexiko 4 года назад +4

      I forget one thing: on the 2002 show at the Troubadour he used an Ampeg v50h head with ampeg cab instead of the Tech 21 amp. It's basically Ampeg's take on Marshall sound, so my guess is tht the Tech 21 was set to emulate the Marshall sound too. There's a show from 1998 (Stuttgart) where he used a Marshall head together with the v4b, and one show from the Big Day Out festival 2001, where his tech switched one Ampeg head because of malfunctioning after a power failure for a Marshall head.

    One thing that's really clear to me about Rated R through Lullabies is that he's using a guitar loaded with high output Dimarzios through an overdrive into a small combo amp (most likely different combo amps for each guitar take) On the intro to "Better living through Chemistry" There is NO WAY those are not Dimarzios. Either the Super Distortion, Super 2 or Super 3. Those are the only pickups that make a sound like that with the volume knob rolled off. Any guitar loaded with one of those 3 pickups, through an overdrive pedal into a combo amp will get you in the ball park of his early tone.

    YOYOYO Idk if you still respond to these comments but I'm planning to get this same guitar the Eastwood GP. I have a Epiphone Les Paul Studio that I plan to change the stock humbuckers to some JB Seymour Duncans, I considered getting my guitar setup with a new nut and heavier strings for lower tunings (as I was gonna get a different one for standard tuning anyway) but I just decided to get the GP instead for C Standard. My only question is did you have to change your nut on the GP or had issues with string buzz and such, and can you still tune to other low tunings comfortably like Drop C#, B, A, D Standard etc.

    • @sethkohlbus1846
      @sethkohlbus1846 4 года назад

      I use 10s with a higher set up and I've noticed it gives me more volume and pushes the amp. At the end of the day I keep using 10s because I like being able to really dig in which would throw 9s way out of tunning. You cant sound good if you cant play good.

    Hey great tones! However, there's something puzzling me... everybody seems to think Josh Homme was using the pdf 1x on riffs from "songs for the deaf" or "lullabies to paralyze"... however, the pedal did not even exist until aroun 2009 as far as I read from stone Deaf, so how is that possible? Did he use the Maestro Parametric Filter and then replaced it with the PDF once it came out? Or did he just use different pedals...

    • @lewismacdonald7218

    For the Torino you can't get, you can easily use the CB SFT,- or any number of open, full range Drives, like Bondi Breakers, or the even more flexible Sick As.
    I prefer the EHX Pitchfork to the Digitech; it has a buffer & noise artifacts like most Octave pedals, so they're all best put in a TB looper,( like the little Xenagama's).
    Big fan of QOTSA, but would say that for these kind of "sounds like" that you should just learn what you liked about the sound, and keep it moving.The world doesn't need any more cover bands,- or, for that matter,- bands that are such a straight rip off that they might as well be,- and the idea is to ASSIMILATE,not COPY ; (unless, of course, your big mission is to get paid squat at weddings and barmitzva's until you get married and get a soul crushing, do nothing job).
    That's how QOTSA happened; they took all the influences that came before,- from Iggy, to Flipper, to Green River, to Fugazi ,- and stirred briskly.The tunings, the broad format,- all of Rock ( and every other genre) in one.That's how a great band does it.

    Dude, these tones are spot on! Could you give a little insight on the base setting in Bias please? Or even upload the patch to Tone Cloud?

    • @LivingroomGearDemos
      @LivingroomGearDemos  4 года назад

      In bias 2 it’s just the Blue Line preset with the knobs set they way in the video. Some EQing in Logic and drive from the CLA Bass and CLA3 compressor

      @@LivingroomGearDemos what about tame impala part 2? maybe cover some more of the guitar tones from lonerism? kevin uses a KTG-1 preamp, and i'm curious if there's a way to create a similar tone without it.

    What string gauges for the bass strings on the C standard bass?

  • @dalodeper
    @dalodeper 4 года назад

    How exactly is the digitech drop being used on that up and down riff at the end? Does that just drop the tuning down to C while you do the riff?

    • @LivingroomGearDemos
      @LivingroomGearDemos  4 года назад +1

      Guitar is tuned to E standard. The Drop is set to octave + dry. This is the setting I use most of the time.
