  • Very often we see players prepare a point well from behind the baseline, which then results in a short ball from the opponent.
Unfortunately, many players then either miss or hit a weak approach shot when dealing with that short ball.
This happens because most players never practice attacking these short balls properly.
In this video OTI Instructor Gregg le Sueur gives you several tips and drills for attacking these short balls effectively.
Making these shots can often be the difference between winning and losing a close match!

I’ve found switching to the semi western grip made this shot a lot easier/ more reliable personally. In fact it’s one of the reasons I made the switch from the Easter

    Nice video Gregg.
You give an explanation and some forehand hitting the balls. So I'm of Indonesia knew the tips clearly.
    Thanks

Some very good pointers, Gregg. When it comes to the kinetic chain and power coming from the legs upward, I wonder if the reverse is more correct. That is, the legs allow energy to be stored by twisting the torso in relation to the hips by anchoring the latter. The energy is released by uncoiling the upper torso which accelerates the arms and, finally, the hips and legs release their share of the stored energy. This would be, however, energy coming from the top (upper torso) downward to, finally, the legs.

Hey George thanks for you feedback. With any rotational sport, the kinetic initiates from the ground up. There is a ground reaction force, as we push down the ground pushes back up. Players usually miss this shot because they don't generate the force from the lower body, so therefore overcompensate with their upper body, muscling the ball and therefore end up missing. The best players in the world have a very 'quiet' upper body through the contact zone. Best, Gregg

A good drill to practice this shot is a three ball drill. You feed one short ball for the approach. The player moves forward and split steps when the second ball is hit. They hit a volley then move forward and split set for the third shot. I like to mix up a feed Dora closing volley or a lob to change up,and teach them not to hang too close to the net. The player then can turn an run in doubles ally back to the end of the line if you have a small group or have them run towards the other side of the and take a lap round the court to back of the line. Great drill for tennis teams or tennis training camp.

but shouldn't your right shoulder (if your right handed) be in front of your left shoulder when you contact the ball ?

yes, but he is stuck in the traditional instruction of hitting down the target line even though he doesn't do it with his own swings.

i find you need the right mentality as well, must be thinking that you will get punished if you hit a bad shot. unlike baseline shots, you need to hit a good shot for this, get a winner or make the opponent stretch for the return. need a ball deep ball with a good amount of speed. otherwise if you hit it too slow or not deep enough, your opponent will have time to set up and aim the shot, then will just be waiting in volley position and hope the opponent doesn't hit too good a shot or a lob

Hey Kxazzzzz, you are right you need to step up and be aggressive to take time away and hurt your opponent. See my comment above regarding the difference between a forcing shot and an approach shot. Best, Gregg

How about trying to take the short ball at the top of the bounce so you have more court to hit into? How about approaching the ball with your body more side on to the ball rather than straight on with the racquet in front of the body? What about not over hitting by trying to kill the ball? How about instead, thinking about putting your opponent under pressure in place of hitting a winner? How about hitting to the open court, or to the opponent's backhand, or down the middle, if playing doubles?

Dear Wally Friend! The body momentum doesn't provide any power or very minimum power. Dear Greg! The eyes don't follow the ball until the contact point!!! Dear Christopher elsas! You are totally right, the shoulder explanation in the film is not ok! Best wishes: Francis from Hungary

Body momentum creates some power so why don’t use it if you have time to do it

@@Marek333MM Dear Marek333MM! I can prove You that body momentum is not important to create power in your forehand. I have worked it out, I'll make a film and send it to you if U want it. Of course you can move forward during the shot, it is positive, but not because of the power. For many other reasons. On the other side it can be very counter-productive if the player has this goal at every shot in mind. Francis

Ferenc Makray Dear Ferenc, I totally agree that forward movement can be counter-productive. You should use it when the ball is short or/and slow. I think body momentum gives you a little bit more power although I’d love to see your film in that topic. Best regards
