something about when he sings "and that little boy stopped crying and that mother is smiling, for death couldn't hold The King." just brings me to tears. Absolutely love this song.
This kind of music has more power than any other genre of music because it's anointed by God's Holy Spirit. I was moved to tears, just as the folks in that video, and as many folks here, as well.
I had heard Donnie sing this a long time ago, but I didn't know the name of the song or Donnies last name! I tried numerous times over the few years, and finally found it today, but it didn't sound the same, two different artists yet I didn't get the same heart feeling. Well now I know! Only Donnie can sing this amazing Love story the way I remember it. Thank You Lord Jesus for your Love!
Donnie is a great singer when he went to the church ofgod in oak cliff church of God his daddy preach for us his wife mother and daddy was there also i Parker isC ofgod also and is a great singer also I hope he is doing well God has Bless the church ofgod with some great people and I won’t to thank God for a great man of God Kenny Hinson and all the Hinson Kenny is in heaven waiting for his love ones
my cousin used to sing this song in church, he passed away 9 year's ago this coming December, everytime I think of him I think of this song. God bless you Mr Sumner
God had a plan today... To lead me here. To touch my soul in a very deep, profound way. My heart broke wide open and love poured in. Tears flooded my eyes and as grace flooded my soul. If you say music is not medicine for the soul... I beg to differ! Thank you for using this song to draw me back to you Lord !! Feel far from God ? Guess who moved !!!
I remember the year this came out and he won Top Song. He sang this several times and LaVerne Tripp sang I'll Get My Reward several times at the Hutchinson Kansas All Night Sing. Both GREAT songs, but Donnie ended up winning that the end of the year. Also that year my dad died the night before Easter so this song means a lot to me.
I have liked this song since it came out. At an all night sign in Hutchinson, Ks. he was singing this song and LaVerne Tripp was singing I'll Get My Reward, both over and over trying to get the song of the year and as you know this one won. Both are awesome and LaVerne's is going to be sang at my funeral. I am retired law enforcement and that song is very fitting.
What a lovely testimony. To whom much is forgiven, the gratitude is palpable. Donnie's testimony is amazing. The group singing with him would understand for they prayed for Donnie with his Daddy, J.D., for years. They knew he was singing from his own experience . . . and he co-wrote the song!
I am crying watching this in University. It makes me think of my mum and how she used to cry for me, and my family and the people she loved. I felt the love of a true mum and makes me think of Mary crying for her one and only son taken away from him.
The night was so different from all the rest And a silence covers the Earth; The stars have no glimmer, the moon tries to hide, For in death lies the man of their birth. Chorus: Then a stone moves, the Earth shakes (and) birds start singing, The sun shines, the Earth warms (for) new life it's bringing; A little boy stops crying, a mother is smiling, For death could not hold their King In a room filled with sorrow, a mother cries For Jesus, her Son now is gone; Her child sent from heaven was taken away, Heart broken she feels all alone. Repeat Chorus At the feet of his mother a little boy cries Saying "'momma' I don't understand;" I remember the look of love in His eyes, That I saw, by the touch of His hand. Repeat Chorus The King of all ages, the Giver of life, For a moment lies silent and still; But a power sent from heaven comes breaking the night, And death must bow to His will. Repeat Chorus Optional Ending: When death could not hold their King. Read more: Gaither Vocal Band - The Night Before Easter Lyrics | MetroLyrics
I had the honor and the pleasure of meeting this amazing gentleman in Tennessee at the Gospel Country Music Awards and had the honor of singing on two records produced by Mr. Sumner. The two songs were released by Ready Records, Curtis Andrews, who gave this incredibly blessed opportunity. Donnie Sumner has one of the MOST impeccable and truly beautiful male voices I have ever heard! Precious memories that I hold dear. XO
I remember hearing that song when I was a teenager by a local gospel group. Even though, it was at the end of the song, I'm glad they finally showed Calvin ❤️.

Donnie's father, Russell H Sumner, was CoG Overseer of Southern New England. It was at the annual CoG Camp Meeting in Connecticut that we first met Donnie. This was a year after Donnie had left ELVIS & had returned to the LORD JESUS. At the annual CoG State Men's Fellowship meeting on Saturday, Donnie gave his testimony, played piano & sang from his heart just like in this song! What a blessing Donnie's testimony & singing was to everyone. . . much rejoicing & praising God, our Heavenly Father!
Donnie's real father was killed in a bar fight when Donnie was a baby. His father's brother, Russell Sumner, raised Donnie. Donnie's mother was absent, also.

Dear Donnie we love you so .
The night was so different from all the rest
And a silence covers the Earth;
The stars have no glimmer, the moon tries to hide,
For in death lies the man of their birth.
Chorus:
Then a stone moves, the Earth shakes (and) birds start singing,
The sun shines, the Earth warms (for) new life it's bringing;
A little boy stops crying, a mother is smiling,
For death could not hold their King
In a room filled with sorrow, a mother cries
For Jesus, her Son now is gone;
Her child sent from heaven was taken away,
Heart broken she feels all alone.
Repeat Chorus
At the feet of his mother a little boy cries
Saying "'momma' I don't understand;"
I remember the look of love in His eyes,
That I saw, by the touch of His hand.
Repeat Chorus
The King of all ages, the Giver of life,
For a moment lies silent and still;
But a power sent from heaven comes breaking the night,
And death must bow to His will.
Repeat Chorus
Optional Ending:
When death could not hold their King.

His father was pastor of my home church (Crisfield, MD Church of God) when Donnie was a teenager.
His father was my pastor in Lexington, Ky. In 70s.
