@RUclipsBanned30timesButBack Watch Carte Blanch if you are looking for victims' perspective - it's too sad, but also a good platform. I do agree that the victims need to be heard and criminal activity must not be glorified. We also need the example of the person that went down the wrong path to prevent others from doing the same. We also need to give people the opportunity to redeem themselves or they will just do more damage. It's easy for you to say these things you have said, but it's not easy to bounce back from living that kind of life and going down that path and confessing your sins openly to those willing to hear and continue to use your platform for good. Jesus went out to the sinners to bring them onto the path of righteousness. Don't do damage with your words and your time, but rather be positive and do something positive and be part of the change.

Thank you for doing this, as someone who comes from The Cape Flats who has gotten a taste of this lifestyle and choosing to get out before it got anywhere. If I had made the wrong decisions I wouldn't be where I am today. I'm now a CEO of a startup in the tech space, I'm a software developer, graphic designer, 3D modeller, and business enthusiast even though I'm nowhere close to being a good businessman. All of these opportunities could've been taken away from me by the wrong choice. One day I hope to be able to be a vessel for change on the Cape Flats as it is really tough for most people to remain level-headed in these conditions.

      7. There are discrepancies in the story (WHEN COMPARED TO RELEBOGILE'S INTERVIEW), yet you still require him to name names. AND if he is going to name names he must name all so that everyone can corroborate the story. This is irresponsible journalism. Stop exploiting the issues in the black and coloured community for your profit and views. You better donate all the money you make from this video to these communities, since you claim to "care" so much about us. AND you better inform all your viewers. White boys like you go into our "zoo" (because it is voyeuristic) and watch us like spectators since you continually mention how much work you do in these communities. You have a cheek to blame these issues simply on the individual by saying these children are left unattended etc. Please do a video of how whiteness, Apartheid, the Group Areas act has created this whole mess. Please have a dialogue about how white privilege continually perpetuates this disparity amount white South Africans and non-White South Africans. If you want to be part of the solution donate this cash from this video. AND TALK ABOUT RESTORATIVE JUSTICE WHILE YOU ARE AT IT. We will be so proud of you

You just can’t force it on them and schools in the US will force you to read Shakespeare when it doesn’t help us at all in the real life! Why not read a book everyone likes?!

I think I remember this guy back in 2019 at Joburg. One of the things he said to us was to always think about the consequences of what you are doing now. Sometimes we enjoy doing bad things but they don't have a good ending, sometimes we do good things but we don't enjoy them like he was going to school but he was not really enjoying school. He was motivating us about to think of how good are the consequences of going to school and how bad are the consequences of crime or bad things we are doing. Most of the time in life we do things we don't feel like doing but we do them because we know where they are taking us.
I'm so happy to see Welcome again on this podcast. Thanks @Wide Awake Podcast .

Having grown up on the flats myself and with a father caught up in gangsterism and spending time in Pollsmoor himself, I've seen so many of my peers end up in the same situation as Welcome. The lack of positive role models in our coloured community has pushed many young men into gangsterism. The allure of "belonging" is so great for some of the kids that they see gangsterism as the only option and make them easy targets for the gangsters.
I was lucky enough to be raised by a strong mother whom believed in education and used education as a tool to keep us as kids in check but also as a tool to get out of your circumstances.
Kids on the flats do not know the pitfalls of gangsterism and can truly benefitfrom hearing welcomes story. I hope this interview goes viral and I hope Welcome's story reach as far and as wide as possible

Hey Josh! I just listened to a bunch of your podcasts, starting from the first ones and ending up here. And I wanted to say that I really can see the improvement in your interviewing skills from the first episodes to this. You don't interrupt the guest as much, stay more on topic, and the whole thing is just so much more smooth and more comfortable to listen to! Congrats on the progress and keep it up:)
Welcome was an amazing guest, really interesting and well-spoken!

Great podcast. Appreciate the honesty. Lives are real and my biggest wish would be for gangs to realise how much they are playing the systems game then they realise. Peace out as there is no 'other'.

We truly are products of our environment. Thank God my dad's absence didn't push me down that road. Now that my city has become increasingly gang infested, it's high time I came home to my kids. COVID has kept me abroad for 2 years and my family has suffered from the distance. I just hope my son doesn't give up on me.

The idea of doing things you don’t necessarily want to, in order to achieve your personal goals is quite universal. We can see parallels between Welcome’s journey and that of someone looking to climb the corporate ladder (for example) are quite apparent

This is so sad. People are so taken with gangsterism on the Cape Flats that they end up glorifying it through morbid curiosity. I hear a lot about circumstances, abuse, not having a choice in these interviews but I don't hear any real remorse for the lives they took, the hurt, damage and trauma they caused families. In our community we all have our own war stories, we just don't all get a social media platform to broadcast it from. I have many cousins and uncles who ended up in this life and in Pollsmoor. Their children suffered, their parents suffered, their partners suffered, their victims suffered. So many young lives in my family have been destroyed by this generational curse. Don't glorify criminal deeds even if individuals have turned their lives around now. I don't hear anyone taking responsibility for their actions in these interviews. Don't make rock stars out of people who are paying back a debt for the things and people they destroyed. Some of the hurt and damage they caused will never be fixed. They deserve a second chance sure, but their choices and actions shouldn't be glamourised.

Great content. I've been on the wrong side of the law to the extent that at one point I was facig substantial jail-time. I'm thankful for deciding to defend myself in court and this is truly the reason , I believe, that I stayed out of jail. The Legal Aid attorney who I was assigned to, couldn't even spell correctly, so I made the decision thus. Liberty was the result and I walked away with a huge fine and the maximum suspended sentence, with a sigh of thanks. Awaiting trial, I couldn't afford bail but because the courts weren't very busy and I'd pleaded guilty ( I WAS) , the state elected to procede with a speedy trial. All the time in the cells, I neverhad an issue with the numbers, other guys who didn't know respect if it poked them in the eye, did though. It was while waiting to get called that the numbers pounced and went through my pockets. The first guy whose hand went in got my instant and violent response when I broke all four fingers by snapping them back on his wrist. The ouens quickly encircled me and I knew there was no help coming from the wardens as they were conspicuously absent at thetime. I prepared for the worst but held the stare of the guy whose fingers I just broke and said, 'My bra', we shared all this time in the cells, now you want to rob me...What kind?" That's the moment a voice said loudly, "Los daai man uit." They immediately sat down and I looked across the cell to see who had just saved my butt from at least a serious hiding...he was a big shot in the numbers. He wore an embroidered Fez and waistcoat. I nodded my thanks, he nodded back and that was that. I know where this came from though. I've always had respect for the Fletse and the gangs, having had pleasant dealings with the guys during my time in CT. The numbers don't forget RAK's, ever. Respect is all it took when I assisted a member back in the day. I hate the crime, not the player. Never forget that, to a member, its just a job.
