I grew up with Kieron - we went to the same church and I was close with his sisters. He is one of the kindest people I've ever met with the most beautiful heart and a warm and loving family. So cool to see him out here on RUclips!
@@alanjacobs2169 Wow, so far as I didn't know that you grew up with my favorite cousin, but I really like to say this that our country needs more good people like him. 👍🏻
This prison guard was so well-spoken and he presented himself very professionally. He was courteous and kept the conversation light-hearted and honest. Wishing lots of success for this man!
I get the feeling that the warden is having to speak very carefully , and not for fear of reprimand by his superiors but rather from the gangs themselves.
Thank you for sharing Kieron... Over 20 years ago, I took my 16-18 year-olds on an excursion to your prison...I was teaching in one of these troubled schools. I understand that fear tactics are used in creating awareness, but this was the message from the wardens that promotes this fallacy... "Every day we kiss our families before we leave for work and we don't know whether we will ever see them again. Sometimes inmates will actually tell you, 'Jou nommer is getrek', meaning that you are going to die. Part of the torture is that they will send you daily signs to remind you. The attack on you will happen and not everyone survives it". We were shown all the weapons and how inmates knew the exact spot on your body that will kill with one stab or cut. The message from the inmates...they shared that as you enter the prison for the first time, these leaders already decide who will rape you tonight...a few will hold you down...no one is too strong. Outside you might think that you are someone big...inside, you are someone's b*tch (excuse the language). The picture that was painted to us of the prison was horrific. Clearly, it certainly has evolved. Over the years, I have shared this experience many times. I can say with certainty, the visit traumatized me. A word of encouragement Kieron...when a colleague told me that I was wasting my time with these kids, that they were all going nowhere...maybe except for one, my response was...I am doing it for that ONE. That is what Jesus asks from us...do it for that ONE, Kieron. Once again thanks for sharing, and for serving in the field of safety and security that helps us all sleep better at night.
Awesome interview - Kieron is a good man, you can just see. We need more people like you sir in this country. It's such a pity that these prisoners generally come from crappy backgrounds and get led down the wrong path. Be greatful if you were not brought up in circumstances like those prisoners. Bless you Kieron
I spent some time in prison. I can assure you that this man handled this interview like a PR officer. I mean he is still working for the correctional services he has to be careful. Pollsmoor is rough
That’s what I thought. Absolutely hilarious. Take away privileges and they will behave like little puppies. Just look at some of the lifelongs. They live there, they handle the system. One way or another. Complete and utter PR talk, zero honesty. I don’t know what to take from this.
I done a small amount of time in prison. I had the pleasure of serving my time at Diepkloof ( sun city ) my first impression was being robbed of my civvy clothes and shoes on the trip to the prison in the prison truck. They gave me what ever shit they were wearing which were faded prison garb. A couple people worth mentioning i met was a lad found guilty of throwing a rock out the back of a bakkie that killed a black kid he was about 19 and had been transferred from pollsmoor. His name was timothy. The second chap was the brother of charmaine phillips and he was inside for home robberies and he was known as monster. I did my time around about 1990 so you were segregated from black prisoners , so the numbers gang was something a white prisoner rarely saw. I could never survive a term in a south african prison these days. For your average person the thought of doing time in one of those places today should be enough to keep you on the straight and narrow. !
Amazing interview, you could really start to see Kieron opening up towards the end and providing some quality insight - I particularly enjoyed his reflections on the relationship between prison and society. As always great questions man!
What an interesting interview, great work Josh. This is probably the best person from corrections services that can represent them, articulate gentlemen. i feel so comfortable by his demeanour. This guy should be the blueprint for what one would look for in a warden, great work sir, thank you.
Josh this is a amazing interview 🙌 👏 what a humble and respectful guy Kieron is . May you be blessed Brother 🙌 and remain the person that you are . Respect 🙏 is everything and you surely have it and definitely get it too . @Josh keep up the good work Brother
This guy is pure gold! He should be a radio presenter. Keep safe at work! What an epic interview. I already subscribed weeks ago. Sorry it took me so long to find this channel. Hope to meet you one day as I'm also in Cape Town. Keep up the stellar work!
You have a new sub! This guy should be the head of prisons or at least be warden at Pollsmoor. He’s extremely intelligent and eloquent. Great video! 👍💯
Great podcast, thank you for your hard work and shedding light in to these issues. What a great guy you are interviewing was a pleasure listening to him. And to you my brother great stuff man. I pray God multiplies the work of your hands.
The thing about rape I find hard to believe. I have a ex-colleague who got arrested for having a bit of alcohol in his system coming home from lunch with his family on Sunday and is traumatised. He started crying and refused to talk about it. One can only assume he was raped
You know its so easy to say lock someone up and throw away the key but these interviews really shed light on the fact that we are all human beings who need to be treated with dignity and respect we must do better for our kids.
should interview my uncle, one of the biggest prison guards in the SA corrections services. He was a warden at Westville maximum security prison for over 20 years, then was at Pollsmoor and currently at Paarl prison. He has manhandled prisoners who have attempted to attack him, he's the South African equivalent of Sgt Hightower from police academy due to his natural strength and height. Also played rugby for the prison services for many years
We need more Awsome people like you this world will be a better place stay safe you personally is outstanding your parents must be very, proud of you and so are all South Africa 🇿🇦 God BLESS I'm 72 now I belive there are good people, 👍
Until he mentioned simons town I wondered where I knew him from! He was in matric when I was in grade 8. I think he was some kind of leadership. Either headboy or deputy
Very protective in his answers regarding the prison conditions. The industrial prison complex is and has become a big international business, don't let them fool you.
This guy is so eloquent and articulate in his speech that for us the smart South Africans and internationals can see right through him..I can bet my money on this whole talk just being a PR thing for the prison he works for image and reputation, nothing more nothing less just another day this well spoken lad doing PR for the corporate he works for people don't fall for it, prison is hell on earth more especially if you were born with a gold spoon sharved up your month for your whole existence..One positive is that the guy would make one hack of a salesman, lawyer, motivation speaker etc cause the all require you to have the gift of gab like he does to excel.
@@wideawakepodcast Awesome! CAN'T WAIT. would be great if you could have a interview with Raphael Rowe. Cast member of the Series "Inside the world's most dangerous prisons."

This man radiates a sort of tranquility that you wouldn't experience with a prison guard from the US
I get the feeling that the warden is having to speak very carefully , and not for fear of reprimand by his superiors but rather from the gangs themselves.
He still works there so his interest is to be as positive about the image of the DCS as possible to protect its reputation and his.
