Thanks a lot for showing the game! I was born in Lübeck, so called "Queen of Hanse" and I totally love to see this theme in a boardgame. The colours fit perfectly. If you have a look on ancient/ antique maps those are the colours and the "design" which has been used by this time.
Hansa Tuetonica is among my top 3 most tabled games this year. I absolutely love this euro. It’s easy enough to teach and the player interaction to depth of play is so spicy. Placements constantly have people groaning, while moving your spread out cubes across the board to claim a route that you can now afford after being displaced always has the table gasp collectively by the clever play. Haven’t had a euro put a group butting heads with glee as much as this one since my og Agricola days when I first got into the hobby. Shux turned me onto this game months back, and you brought Vindication onto my radar… and now I’m finding myself loving these games with the minimalistic pure cube based gameplay. It’s incredibly refreshing in this land of chonky minis. Both of these games are ones that have unsurprisingly krept into my top 10 and I find myself teaching groups these two games back to back to show the joy of wee lil cubes.
Grabbed the old version of this game with the Eastern expansion from goodwill a couple months ago. Have not had a chance to play it yet, but looking forward to it even more now. Thanks!
Simply love this game. Yes bland artwork, but when you get into it you forget it completely. The added maps that block out areas unless you have control over an unlock city really adds more tension. If everyone is contesting an upgrade spot, I will try to sneak in, uncontested, someplace else and return later. Having 5 players all being cut throat is so much fun.
Very good game with the right group. It does have a dry theme but the gameplay is very tactical in nature. Interesting comparison with Endeavor. I couldn’t think of anything similar but that is pretty close in some aspects. Nice review.
Endeavor: Age of Sail is one of my favorite games and I have always been interested in Hansa Teutonica but the art kind of put me off along with its age. Might need to give it a go! It's amazing how often the games you mention that have some sort of similarity helps me decide rather a game might or might not be for me. Appreciate you going the extra mile and presenting these comparisons.
Absolutely Chad, it's one of the things I've always liked when I saw other people do it, and I generally try to create the type of content I want to watch.
Hansa Teutonica is one of the greatest games in existence. Not every game has to have a sci-fi space fantasy theme. Many times theme is used to try to cover up for shallow gameplay. HT does not need an overly elaborate theme. But it does have a theme and i think the theme does work for it. The maps looks pretty. The Ht big box is an amazing deal.
Just got this to the table this past thursday. AMAZING game. Instantly top 5 in my collection. I do feel like replayability could be an issue but they fixed that by including the other maps.
Hansa is really a masterpiece of game design. Easy to learn, easy to play, deep with strategy, reasonable play time, great experience at most player counts and wonderful player interaction. My only gripe would be the thematic integration is somewhat weak and fairly abstracted.
Now that we have the pretty Castles of Burgundy coming, Hansa Tuetanica is my top game I want a visual redo (preferably even a thematic one). A game I frequently compare to this is Brass, but while the actions and results all seem convoluted to me in Brass - in Hansa Tuetanica the package is just right (besides the looks).
Hansa Teutonica is a more complex and meaner Ticket to Ride. I love Hansa, but it does take a certain group. Some people I play with don't like "mean games".
Hey I have Brass Birmingham but I am not sure if Birmingham is worth it´s time because I have quite some of those longer games. Would it be a good idea to get hansa teutonica instead of Brass?
HT does play quite quickly compared to Brass, one of the reasons why I love HT is because it's a relatively quick play but gives lots of interesting decisions; a bit like Race for the Galaxy - not quite the best 2p board game in the world but easily the best I know of which can be played in 20 minutes.
Nice review - I agree this is a superb game! I actually think of it as similar to Caylus - elegant, with easy to understand rules / mechanics but hard to master, and not a "nice" game for overly sensitive gamers. A further thing in common, and an advantage over many complex more modern games, is they are a breeze to set up and put away.
Hi Alex, any ToBack or not to back, coming up,next week? Found my next huge and expensive KS. Do you know a Game "Company of Heroes?" They are doing a 2nd Edition Campaign currently. I discovered this Game a few days ago, and was flashed by Gameplay’s and Components, the terrain is huge and wonderful and even tactical! Also the inserts and strategy Gameplay even with 4 v 4 Players, if you see some videos (huge table space, though) I would love to hear your thoughts and comments on this one… I could imagine, you don’t like the war theme, that’s also not my Comfort Zone, but this one, the tactical Gameplay, somehow dragged me in. And we played Risk, when we were kids, didn’t you? So would like to hear your thoughts on this, for me it’s might be my most expensive KS of the year, if elder scrolls is not going to top it, but this one, came so unexpected… grrr my poor wallet, but hart to decide, which box isn’t needed here, lots of Fomo!

Moin, i was born and live still to this day in Lübeck. Königin der Hanse!

Thx for giving this Game a broader audience. for me a 10/10
Absolutely :)

It's solid, and good catch! Goodwill for a game like this is impressive.
One of my favorite games of all time ... The Chess of Euros .. I could play it everyday.
Totally disagree about the look of the board, I think its charming and fits the theme. Not every game needs to have super saturated colors.

Glad you appreciate it :-) And yeah, I really enjoy this.

I wish I had someone to play this with or that there was a digital version. Think I would really enjoy it.

I picked this big box up as the price was right and every review made it seem right up my alley.
Great review. Someone on BGG made a Star Wars-themed board and player boards, which gets around the very dull visuals, but you do need to print it all
Oh man, that sounds great :)
This game has been in my list for a while. Thanks for this

@BoardGameCo which one is better for you please? Hansa Teuronica or Troyes? :)
Troyes :)
Looks really good mechanics wise. Wait for that deluxe Awakened Realms version with all minis lol
Hansa Teutonica is a more complex and meaner Ticket to Ride. I love Hansa, but it does take a certain group. Some people I play with don't like "mean games".
Have you played the route builder game Polynesia? I have played Polynesia, but not Hansa T., wondering about their similarities.

How do you think _Carnegie_ compares to this one?
need this game for my 5 player nights.

Despite the look, I always felt interested in trying this one, but have yet to :D I don't get the colour schemes for a lot of euros

Jamie would hate this game. Jeff would be mad that Jamie would hate this game.
Not only 'beige', but workers/merchants are cubes? Unfortunately, this game would never hit my table.
Lol yep
How many stars?
Yup, have to agree that this is a pretty good game. Looks can be deceiving ;-)
Got this on sale for $21
Nice!
Beige and inaccessible red and green 😩
:)
there are other colors as well
