Nice intro to the principles. As a guy roughly your age I find you way more relatable than a lycra clad female instructor.

Appreciate this breakdown of the principles! What strikes me is how the set of principles you describe has so much overlap with that of a resistance training program as well, and it’s almost like Pilates sounds like a system of resistance training for your full core/midsection by understanding your body

Glad you found it useful! Yes loads of overlap and application to resistance training will make a big difference. When done right, it will affect your whole body from head to feet, it is very much about core, but it is also whole body 🙌

Thank you! This is what I have learnt at the Pilates school too, but these principles came from the PMA when they started marketing Pilates to the world. I wish we had them from Joseph! Later I also learnt the mind principles that came down from Romana, which I like even more: “Intelligence guided by the will using memory and imagination assisted by intuition.”

      Yeah totally get you.
I don't worry about these things too much any more.
I think either it is an ever evolving thing and we can accept what we find works and is backed by science. Or we must be absolutely puritan.
Anything that came from anyone but Pilates himself can be forgotten.
By all accounts JP never referenced any principles. Never mentioned any particular way of breathing. Many more things we take as Pilates did not come from him.
And half of what we are taught is not science backed and conflicts with other methods 🤷‍♂️🤣

My question is, is pilates spiritual in any way? As a Christian I don't do yoga because of it's spiritual connection. Is pilates related to yoga in any way?
    Thanks for the great video!!!😀😀😀

Hi there! Thanks for commenting your question. Only spiritual in the sense of a connection with body and mind. It's origins are totally different to that of yoga.
However sometimes you will have an instructor who perhaps is multidisciplinary and brings some of that in to it. Hope that helps 😊

This was helpful. Thanks. I've been doing pilates now for few weeks and it's helped me very much. I've been able to strengthen my core by bringing myself right up to 90degrees for the first time in years because of pilates.
