  • Although not technically a walk, the Whanganui Journey is classified as one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. Spanning 145 km from Taumarunui to Pipiriki, this one-way canoe paddle typically takes 5 days to complete. However, many adventurers opt for a 3-day version, starting at Whakahoro and finishing at Pipiriki. Paddle through remote hills, bush-clad valleys, and encounter waterfalls, rapids, and historic sites. The river’s beauty and cultural significance make it a memorable experience for all. If you’re up for an unforgettable canoe adventure, the Whanganui Journey awaits!
    Date paddled: April 2023
    Distance: 88 KM
    Duration: 3 days

Great video. Had an interesting book on the steam paddle wheel vessels on the Whanganui River, they had wear plates on the hull bottom, and they had cables in the river bed which they used to winch the vessel over the rapids and when the river was low.

I love all of your videos but really enjoyed this one. Something a bit different from the typical hiking ones. It was cool to see Chris’s Mum join you on your adventures.

That was very peaceful and relaxing..........from this side of the camera, anyway. From your comment after the Queen Charlotte Track, regarding this adventure being an interesting one to take your mom on, I kept worrying she was going to turn over the kayak in the rapids. Nice touch Danya calling out for slacking in the rear of the canoe 😂😂. Nice musical background with the ambient noise. As always, it was quite enjoyable. Thank you for sharing. Im looking forward to the next one. Safe/fun travels!!

There was a few hairy parts during the rapids that I didn't get on film, but overall it was mostly relaxing and peaceful 😅
Next video will likely be one from Western Australia as the hiking season over here will start ramping up soon. Still got plenty of NZ videos in the backlog though 😁

A gentle & enjoyable vlog. Tell me, what are the blue canisters for? Intrigued you carry them to the hut at night. Lovely ferns & waterfalls❤

They are "water tight" (not really) barrels to keep all your gear in. You'll have to cart them to the hut and back every day, so usually best to pack as light as possible 😅

I've never seen photos of it clear to be honest! This was near the end of the season with quite a bit of rain, so perhaps that is why
