  • The Karangahake Gorge is one of the best displays of New Zealand’s rich mining history Taylor and I have come across so far. We were able to hike through multiple old rail tunnels and numerous underground workings.
    We planned on this being a quick hike but it turned into a half day worth of exploring and checking out various mine ruins and waterfalls.

    I friend of mine helped open that tunnel to the public back in the 80's apparently he said there was about 12 inches of soot stuck to the roof of the tunnel from the steam engines.

    It’s an awesome place I never tire of the beauty of the place, I have lived over the road form there for over fifty years and love the place

      I lived directly under the school in the big old house with the pool. I spent all my time in the bush and the river, walking, and exploring the mines. A fabulous beautiful place to be a kid... I miss it still
