When Alonso said we couldn't use the ipod Nano to indicate the year the event occurred, I wondered if the device stored some of her late father's music. Lupita really made that pizza storyline work and I cried with her when she found that photo. Given this is the 3rd go at "sound is deadly" I thought this was really well done. As was the trailer - it didn't reveal too much... given I went in thinking Djimon had a main role! Joseph was a great scene partner with Lupita. And as unlikely as it was that the cat was mostly silent, I'm a sucker for cute pets. I guess that replaced having children at the centre. I almost wished the children at the fountain had a bigger part. It was strange to see the credits with a very short list of actors.
I really liked this movie, saw it today. I thought the use of the cat throughout the movie was kind of magical, a magical cat! My cat would have been gone at the first explosion. I liked the relationship between the two leads, Lupita is kind of mesmerizing to watch. and the moodiness of the city with the smoke and the rain, explosions etc was very well done. This might be my favorite of the three so far.
Saw it a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it. The trailer did a great job of not giving away the plot. The movie ended up being not what I was expecting going in but I really appreciated what they were trying to say / do. Well acted by all. Lupita doesn't miss. Beautiful score too. Solid film!
I personally felt the action/thriller sequences to be underwhelming. It didn’t feel like there was anything new or inventive to really get the tension up. But what did work for me in the film was the Quieter human moments. That bar scene particularly really captured the authentic intimacy that made the first film so emotionally good.
Alex Wolff was in Pig too! Lupita is always amazing, one of my favorite actresses. I like these films, and am excited for it. I can see how this could stop as a trilogy tho, b/c the stories may get a bit redundant.
Without being redundant, they have to do world building, which is almost impossible since the monsters are so powerful. They would have to set this in the past like Prey with Predator or the future like Jason X to make it sci-fi. So far, they done it in rural and suburb area. And now the urban area. There is not much variations they can do...
personally... i loved it.. and the whole "she's already dying" thing.. she just wanted to die at "home" in harlem... and she was determined to do such... she wanted him to go.. not cuz she didn't need him or his "help".. but she wanted him to get to safety, knowing that she was headed toward the monsters not away from them and she just wanted him to get to safety... i thought the way it was written was perfect... much more sentimental than most horror stories and that made me like it even more.. ..
I saw it earlier and thought it was a lot of fun and terrifying at times also was only 1 hr 40 minutes and the theater was packed too which was good to see
Great review. Grace from 'Beyond the Trailer' mentioned that the cat could be a reference to 'Alien' and I hope it is. I still need to watch 'A Quiet Place 2', which I'm excited to see.
This would have worked so much better if Lupita was in New York to get a special treatment that only one doctor knows how to do. Then have her and that doctor fight to survive and hopefully get somewhere safe where he can do the procedure. Her life should have been in the balance not already canceled.
I definitely disagree with Alonso here. Just because she has a terminal disease, it does not mean she has given up life or that she would not fight to survive or to live another day. And her priorities might be different... such as going to Harlem or to get pizza might have different significance than other people.
I was surprised how much emphasis there was on the cat. There's an incredible amount of the cat. I also liked how it's more about a testament on life than a straight action film .
Mostly agree with Christy. Very tense, and the two leads are fantastic. I thought the NYC setting was a fresh change of setting. And the final scene/shot is both sad and incredibly satisfying.
Was on the fence on this one until your Breakfast All Day entry....am now even more torn. The first one creeped me out royally, the second less so yet still worked, and am also not certain that dust-covered, in-disarray lower Manhattan wouldn't trigger some mighty potent and upsetting memories (lost two friends in the Towers). That said, we do love Ms. N'yongo, and THEN, there’s the cat, and, as we all know, dogs are loyal servants, cats are upper management. Will have to consider. "Pig" ruled, so Mr. Woolf's participation is another plus. Thanks as ever, Christy and Alonso.
I'm not surprised you two are split on this. I'm hearing a lot of mix reviews on it. I can't see it this weekend. May try and check it out on the 4th since I have that day off.
There were two iPods in the movie. The iPod (Classic?) Samira had at hospice was different from the iPod Mini used later in the movie. I get the feeling THAT iPod was owned by Eric.
I too wondered how they figured out the "BE QUIET!" part so quickly, probably shortly after first seeing the trailer. And speaking of the trailer, I thought I had fallen asleep because there wasn't the attack on the Mitch McConnell look-alike nor the diner scene with the map. Might those have been slotted out with the reshoots you mention? I still use my 160gb iPod daily when out and about walking. I was mocked for it with a post yesterday. Considering the aliens are so sound sensitive, WTF are they so noisy? Clomping around, constantly clicking etc. Definitely not as tense as the first one but still plenty of jump scares and other moments of anxiety.
As always definitely disagree with Alonso’s take specifically with not being invested with Lupita’s character because she has cancer. So let’s say an alien invasion happened today, you wouldn’t give a shit about the ppl who are sick and in hospitals?!
There's an early establishing shot of the New York City skyline with a completed One World Trade Center and Central Park Tower, so it couldn't be 20 years old.
My favorite reviews are the ones where you DISAGREE. I will always take hearing an opposing opinion on art that is articulated well and starts a discussion more than having my opinion parroted back at me. Cheers to you both!🥂
The hell are we talking about, the stakes are lower because the main character is terminally ill?! Ridiculous. If anything, I immediately *loved* the choice, because it makes her sickness and the invasion mirrors of each other - even when a seeming death sentence looms, the nature of the human spirit is to fight, fight, fight on.
So apparently the first one took place in 2021? At least according to google? It’s weird because the original cane out in 2018. I guess they were projecting it as something in our future at the time? From what I read the first film is set in 2021 so the invasion was in June 2020? Im not a big fan of the franchise, dont think Ive seen any of them from start to finish but I was curious and looked it up so if anyone else has better insight please share?
They know to be quiet per common sense. I'm pretty sure it's not that hard to figure out the noisy people always get it. Also if dealing with natural predators you know to keep quiet.
Saw this thursday night here and I was mostly bored with this and I think the conceit of a quiet / silence based alien has had its "diminishing returns" and its here. Too many daytime scenes because I guess that alien is out of the bag. Never scary, overly reliant on jump scares and they even repeated the big "assault" scene twice sort of. The second time it happened, all I can think I cant believe they're doing this again. So many jump scares which shows they knew it wasn't scary. Lupita Nyong was excellent though. The movie limped its way to the finale and we didnt need to see the "suicide: scene because it took away from the character. 3/10 for me. The trailer was terrific and had me hyped but the movie itself was kind of weak.
I liked this one. Decent story, entertaining. What it was missing was the daughter played in the John Krasinski movies that is deaf and played by a deaf actress. I like the representation and that she is the hero of the story. I look forward to whenever the third movies of that series comes out.
I agree with the woman she’s 100% awning understood this movie completely. However, the man, I don’t even know if you watched the movie. Every time they spoke or there was noise they were near water or something louder than Them. Also, When Eric read Sam’s poem, it describes how long she’s had Cancer. And at the end, when Eric gets on the ship, that’s the boat that is going to The island in quiet Place two. And when Eric chases the cat originally you were going to get why the creatures killed humans But Paramount cut it out of the movie, which made that scene seem silly.
I enjoyed it but there were so many moments where I was like “where is everyone?!” They’re walking all over Manhattan and yet after only a day or two the city is nearly desolate? We get that great scene of the huge crowd of people trying to walk through the streets silently to get to the boats, but after that they never really run into anyone in the streets or anywhere they go. Just thought it was jarring
I was disappointed with the film. It was a wasted opportunity to tell an interesting story about how the invasion began. The story we got was just bland. The guy was introduced too late and I didn’t buy into their relationship, nor did I understand what either of them wanted or were trying to do. The lack of terror and confusion amongst the characters also made the film less believable - the same scenario in part two’s prologue was a lot more effective. (I did love the brief shot of the creatures crawling/jumping on the buildings!) Also, like you said, how did everyone know that they had to be quiet and couldn’t even talk? While it’s not a surprise that they’d quickly realise the creatures were attracted to loud noise, they did seem to figure out the sound thing in just a few minutes. This concept worked well when told from the perspective of a family unit, that’s why the first two films were so effective. If ‘Day One’ focused on a couple, or siblings, or a family it may have worked better. Or maybe a different approach entirely, perhaps the perspective of the military? 6/10. (The cat was the MVP!)
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with how much praise this is getting. Aside from the moderately decent characterization, I’m struggling to figure out what this does differently from the other 2 films that have already stretched this premise thin. Someone walks quietly, accidentally makes a noise, and suddenly there’s an alien 10 feet away to jump out at them. Plus, setting the whole movie at the start of this apocalypse in a big city just forces you to ask a bunch of logistical questions that the first movie managed to avoid by being set when/where it was. I’m just tired of this franchise and am honestly pretty shocked no one else seems to be.
I feel like I would have preferred Lupita to play the Piano with the sentimental value of it at the end rather than play music with the iPod. If she is going to allow herself to die, wouldn't this have been a more impactful way to go?
I enjoyed the first one well enough (7.5), I have yet to see the second but this 3rd has me agreeing with Alonso based off what I have seen but maybe I will be surprised. One thing is for sure, and it is Lupito is beautiful, and her expressive face lends itself well to this.
I know genre movies require a suspension of belief but did you know that one and half million people live in Manhattan? Where did they all go? And why do 15-20 aliens attack 2 people? Does that mean millions of aliens landed? And the boat at the end would not hold the population of some single buildings in Manhattan. I loved the first A Quiet Place even though I had similar questions about the premise (8 billion earthlings and the aliens are hanging around farmlands picking off one or two at a time?!) Lupita is fantastic but the basic premise of the movie is totally unbelievable and I couldn’t get into it
@@BreakfastAllDay he LOVES it! The trick is to start early. I started bringing him out on a harness like 2 days after I got him when he was still a kitten.
Never seen any Quiet Place movies. Do they ever address the aliens being able to hear people's heart beats? Blind people whose hearing is very sharp can sometimes hear hearts.
The things that bothered Alonso don't seem like things that would bother me. I watched the trailers with all the downtown NYC chaos and dust and destruction, and I didn't really think about 9/11. (And I lived dowtown NYC when it happened!!) So, I think I'll be fine with that aspect. My one slight hesitation is that I was never all that into this franchise to begin with. The movies have been good, but they haven't knocked me out. I'll probably check this out though. Perfect AMC A-List fodder! Thanks to you both!!
Yeah sometimes I don’t know what his deal is, that was a really grasping-at-straws-to-take-offense nitpick to make. Are we really so sensitive about 9/11 after twenty-plus years that a modern disaster movie set in New York can’t show ash and dust?
It’s crazy to say you were less invested because Lupita Nyongo’s character was in hospice, that’s like leaving old people on the Titanic because they’re old and fuck them 🤣🤣🤣
If you dive into water holding a cat wrapped in a bag, you should expect the cat to be dead in a few seconds. Great movie though; I would have loved to see some actual fighting between the military and the aliens, it would have made the movie different from the two other installments.
I wonder if Patsy’s will get a Quiet Place bump. The 118th street location makes good pizza. I’m with Christie. I liked this. Makes me rue even more Juliette Binoche didn’t get the lead part for Godzilla.
When Alonso said we couldn't use the ipod Nano to indicate the year the event occurred, I wondered if the device stored some of her late father's music. That is a really good point you make about the iPod. That's probably it -- her dad's music is on there. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
This movie felt very spiritual. “You are not your circumstances” type of spiritual
Michael Bay's autobiography will be called A Loud Place.
The Quiet Place is a documentary, because it'll be the end of the world before Americans learn how to keep their mouths closed.
4.5/5. My favorite of the three by far.
Lupita and Joseph acted so well. Great at showing fear😢
They had a terrific dynamic, very believable.
As a fan of this series, I'm sat regardless. Always love hearing y'all disagree though! It's a friendly dynamic we don't see enough of these days.
I was thoroughly entertained. I will watch Lupita do anything.

Glad to hear your theater was crowded!
You can tell it's the same director as Pig. In Pig, Nic Cage just wants his pig back. In Quiet Place: Day One, Lupita just wants pizza.
Great review. Grace from 'Beyond the Trailer' mentioned that the cat could be a reference to 'Alien' and I hope it is. I still need to watch 'A Quiet Place 2', which I'm excited to see.

I'm between Christy and Alonso on this one. They kept the tension, but there is nothing new offered here. But probably not worth repeated rewatch.
