One of my favorites. This guy is killing ! Takes you different places , 3/4, 7/8, Latin, Hip-hop. Plus, his use of the octopade is real musical. Groove, chops. He's got it all. Pity he didnt win...
I agree. I can't believe he didn't win. On top of the odd signature and styles you mentioned, his use of double kick was outstanding as well, he didn't just slam straight 16ths constantly, but set up syncopated patterns. Impressive indeed.
Maybe I don't get stuff...probably too old, but to everyone who are negative or looking for faults, WHY? The playing is stunning, the musicality is what it is. If any one of the detractors wish to put their efforts on the tube, then do so and please message me, so I can see why you choose to critique with so much authority - I'm sure your playing will do you justice...................!
Just met this cat about a week ago in Austin, TX. Very down to earth and humble. First time watching him play.........beast mode. Any negative comments about this performance is envy, haterism or just pure wackness
I am currently on internship with CymbalFusion and Fonz is a colleague of mine, he is probably the nicest guy you will ever meet, he gives an positive attitude all the time and he is always willing to share his chops to people whom ask him, Its rare to find such nice guys like Fonz out there now, we all thought that he should have won though..
To anybody denouncing the presence of the octapad in the drum-off, you've answered why you'll enjoy the luxuries that come with being at this level. Being a good musician means not only mastering the basics of your instrument, but keeping up with the times and MASTERING what today's world has to offer. Electronics are becoming more and more prominent in music, so it only makes sense that musicians in this competition should demonstrate competence with the technology.
I have been judging local Drum Offs in Illinois..and have watched the finals since it started..and I really enjoyed this. Great feel ...and while it tended to be a bit too similar at times...very well played and very entertaining.
I've been a fan of Fonz for a couple years after seeing him demo drumsets for CymbalFusion on youtube. This kid has such amazing feel, great fills, and wow, that right hand holding his stick between his index and middle finger is crazy! And the floor tom vent thing was awesome. I saw Gavin Harrison do something similar with a tube into the drum.
I watched this two or three times til I got it, meaning the brilliant musicianship and timing involved. Probably the most underated performer from '12. Should have won it with this, al things considered. awesome.
this guy needs to start recording his own albums. he's making entire songs simply by mixing synth pads with the solos on an acoustic drumset. amazing work, my friend
he blows into the hole in the side which makes the air pressure increase which pushes the head outwards causing it to make a higher pitch...or something like that. Gavin Harrison does it in his solo on letterman which i highly recommend checking out
Fonz plays keys & bass too so I could imagine how he put this all together. I'm like how he do all that and he those pads at the same time doing licks! I knew he was cold but this is way off the chain!!!!!!!!!! Like off the charts off the chain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have to admit. I'd love an album of shit like this. I miss a real drumset. Played for 10 years. Apartment life can destroy a dream : / . Playing on electric drums just cause pain in the wrists and blisters in the hands but it's nice to hear real drums played by real players. The nuances you can get out of the drums, the woods, the metals.
While I dislike the notion that the drum off is becoming more and more centered on the octapad, I actually loved the chords he picked to use on it during the first half of the show. While it wasn't very flashy or drum solo-y it had great groove, space, and it had loads of musicality. I unfortunately can't say the same for a majority of solos I've been seeing lately, they usually just end up in some 3-5 minute chop out session which gets old, fast. This guy has some serious self-discipline.
He's blowing into the air vent in the side of the drum. This causes an increase in air pressure inside the drum, which in turn bends the pitch up. #science
@@listaneramusic This type of trick can also be done by slowly pushing down on the drum head to add pressure and hitting it, a lot of drummers like to do that on the snare.
i understand your point when it was mainly just about the drums not adding more things but i like the octapad makes the drummer make his drumset make magic but either its just a matter of opinion
Then again, it does give oppurtunity to let us fellow drummers be more creative and still have a kickass time. Having fun is the most important part right? I love the sound of a droning note as you go ape-shit with it XD. I do admit the traditional set had it's own charm. But I love both :D
alright, wtf.. never heard a 4 piece sound like a damn 7 piece. This guy definitely knows how to get some sounds out of those toms and bass. Holy shit.

you have to admit though juan Mendoza is a genius player as well.
He won in my eyes that's all that matters
He been doing that since we was kids !!!
So proud of him...

2012 was illegal. The finalist were all monsters. What the hell?
i agree.
Good to hear a drum solo with an actual musical component. Well Done!.
I've watched this 4 times in the 2 days. This was performed so tastefully it just makes you feel good.

By far my favourite solo of the 2012 competition; best dynamics, creative, versatile and enjoyable to watch. Hats off to the Fonz
THE CYMBAL FUSION GUY

I cant even think of a response. My eyes are deer wide open.. I haven't blinked in nearly 2 mins..
This was storytelling in such a badass musical way.
alphonso is a beast in real life. I got a chance to see him live at my church. He is one of my faves too
Amazing how much difference triggers make! Very nice!

I love this guy's transitions!
Simply amazing!
I´m wondering how those guys can come up with so cool and different fills all the time.
one of my favourites !
This guy definitely has the groove on his veins.
Fucking amazing. I think the right hand technique thing is just the icing on the cake of his creativity, speed and perfect timing.
Very entertaining. Great beats and excellent integration of the synth.
Very well executed.. Great demonstration of musicality and discipline.. Keep chopin
this guy needs to start recording his own albums. he's making entire songs simply by mixing synth pads with the solos on an acoustic drumset. amazing work, my friend
You re up to something. Great going Fonz, really like your temperament.

He is a... monster! !! I've never heard him till now, but I'll be checking for him!
Really unique, I appreciate this.

That 7/8 was lovely
Amazing!
I love this dude.. I also think he should have one... amazing feel ...
I knew I've seen this guy before. He does all the CymbalFusion videos! Such a sick drummer.
Fonz plays keys & bass too so I could imagine how he put this all together. I'm like how he do all that and he those pads at the same time doing licks! I knew he was cold but this is way off the chain!!!!!!!!!! Like off the charts off the chain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How did he bend the pitch of the floor tom! That was awesome!
I understand the judging system, but this was still my favorite one.
Yes they are.
Very nice solo.
Amazing .. Good Job
He's holding the right stick between his index and middle finger. crazy!
dude smashes it. awesome

this guys' groove was sick!
VERY musical. Lovely.
That trick at the end with the floor tom...how is that done?

@@listaneramusic This type of trick can also be done by slowly pushing down on the drum head to add pressure and hitting it, a lot of drummers like to do that on the snare.
legend!!
He holds the stick in his right hand between his index finger and his middle finger a lot, I don't know if he had injury or its just his prefference
it's actually a kind of grip you can use mid play to lessen the pain when your hand is getting sore in the middle of a groove. A true life saver
i understand your point when it was mainly just about the drums not adding more things but i like the octapad makes the drummer make his drumset make magic but either its just a matter of opinion
It doesn't it is optional and shows the judges that you have creativity.
Awesome.
inspiring !

great drummer
Damn good!!!!!
That ec reversed dot snare head sounds great.
why are there several comments calling him the "cymbal fusion guy"?/?
PHILIP DEPASQUALE he does demos at the cymbal fusion store in houston
great groove
So let me get it straight. To be a finalist you have to use samples on a pad, use a cowbell, and use crowd participation.
love that technics 1200 shirt he's got on
Yes, it's obviously impacting his ability to perform amazingly. You should give him some pointers.
... i typed my last statement before I saw him pick up that floor tom. I get it now. He's an alien.
1:34 love that double time feel!
He's from cymbalfusion right? He's freakin awesome.
Actually, he's been playing like that since high school. Gerald Heyward plays the same way.
alright, wtf.. never heard a 4 piece sound like a damn 7 piece. This guy definitely knows how to get some sounds out of those toms and bass. Holy shit.
awesome
Some times, yes.
3:10 thru 3:35. Wow. Just wow.
