This is the most beautiful DIY stirrer I've found on RUclips to make it myself. And I like how it's professional put together. The only thing that I change is a on/off switch in the front. So after 5 years, thank you!
Great vid Larry! I have a similar cigar-box setup only I used a cheap PWM controller from Amazon for the fan speed control. I also keep an extra magnet wrapped in electrical tape to pull the stir-bar off to the side of the flask so I don't drop it in my fermenter when pitching.
Lots of great tips, I have a Fresno chili mash going right now, and when they’re done I’m going to do a three day stir plate finish with them, thanks for the video Larry
and being a techno nerd I have had all the parts set aside for years upon years. Pft .. the women who said I will never use them lol ... the parts outlasted several girlfriends : )
That was awesome Larry! I'm sure most Homebrewers are DIY'ers to begin with. (Why would we DIY beer when we could just buy what someone else made?) I'll definitely be making my own stir plate!
Like I mentioned on the other channel they are 20 bucks on Amazon. By the time you order the Fan and assembling it you could have your stir table in the mail
Looking on Amazon, I didn't see any thing that cheap, but prices must have really fallen in recent years because they'd typically be well over $100; often closer to $150. This one was essentially free since it was mostly spare parts I already has lying around except for the stir bars themselves. Plus, it's more rewarding to make things yourself.
Using your informational video I built two of these thanks for the ideas, they work very well that being said I noticed that you have an airlock on your flask not sure if that defeats the principle of introducing o2 into the yeast to multiply ? .......... ( I'm just a novice with minimal experience lol) but learning every day. Thanks for the great youtube videos
Thanks enjoyed watching this video, and music is great! Just want to know if you have a link for the multi voltage dc adapter. I have tried using a potentiometer to control the speed but not successful as those I have tried have resistance that's too high. I have now gone as far as 100 ohms. Thanks again!
I didn't do the DIY. I'll do my 1st yeast starter tomorrow with a stir plate. It goes from really slow, to a really fast tornado that sucks air & bubbles in. Should I do a calm stir. Or oxygen is good for yeast to start & just crank it up?
I love the video. I subscribed to your channel and I am learning from you. I do have questions if you do have some time to answer. How long do you have the fan running to complete the yeast starter? And when you pitch your yeast on the brew day would give yeast starter 24 hrs or more to be ready to be pitch or do you give it some more time? Thank you for your knowledge on how to make great beer.
Thanks for the brilliant video! It's very informative and I'm in the process of gathering up the different bits to build my own. When buying the magnets online I am faced with a lot of options as to diameter and thickness. As a complete novice could I ask you the approximate size of the magnets you used in this project. Thanks again!
Hey LARRY, GREAT VIDEO. MY FAN DOESNT SEEM TO RUN FAST ENOUGH. IM USING A 12 volt 100mA power source, do you think that’s not enough power? It just barely makes a vortex in 750ml of water and doesn’t seem to move a yeast starter
If you're building a stir plate WHILE a beer is already fermenting then it's too late for that batch. LOL Seriously, if you are only doing small batches, you don't need to grow yeast since the vials/packages/packets are usually designed for a 5 gallon batch anyway.
@@BEERNBBQBYLARRY yes. i am trying to be cheap and save the yeast pitching rate. i am trying to see if i can pitch lesser from my packet by letting the yeast multiply in the starter first. by doing starter, i am also trying to make sure if the yeast is starting before i go make my wort. if no, i dont start with the wort. im new to home brew. I am not sure if my understanding above is accurate or correct. I have some table fan motors sitting around, so i am trying to see also if it is a good idea to make a stir platform for my fermenter
I want to make one for mixing my e juice. I didn't know how this magnetic repository lookalike was called and how the wire connection worked. Ty so much.
very good Larry, not to toot my own horn, however if/when you have a moment, check out my homemade magnetic stirrer :) i use a different technique to drive the motor(PWM), so as to not lose torque at lower speeds. i have all the plans and schematic freely available. GREAT VIDEO ! love your work i like the foam idea! i might add that to mine :) pm me if you want me to build one up for you!!! no charge for you pal
Great tutorial, mate!
As a lifelong aquarist, I have found that an airstone works well, as an alternative to a stir plate.

Thanks. I eventually did put a dial knob on the front as shown in this subsequent video:

good idea Dennis! i like that
Streamlined version; glue the magnets to the fan blades, use a 10K pot with any power wart to control speed.

You are one smart, resourceful guy. Well played Larry!
Great idea Larry
I looked around and found all the pieces in the garage. Thanks.
awesome project
A great DIY plate and it looks fantastic too. Cheers!
Nice easy way to make a stir plate. Thanks
Man this guy is brilliant I am going to copy everything I see in this video and you got a new subscriber thanks for the idea
Just made mine after watching your video, all for under £10. Thanks for the walk through.
I'm going to try this. I have an extra fan from upgrading my pellet smoker to a larger one. Should be a fun project.
Great video, I didnt realise it was so straight forward.
Great video. I just got the same cigar box tonight for 2 bucks at cigar shop. Will be building tomorrow.
I just built mine.. thanks Larry, you're awesome!

Acids are fine for an occasional stogie. Not too often though.

Another great video. I've learned a ton from your videos.
thanks for the awesome video Larry!
next time turn it on and come from the outside inward with the marker until your white dot in the center is the same diameter as your washer
great cheap alternative to just buying one
Very cheap if you already have the components lying around collecting dust.
Great build Larry, one of the best! Thanks.
Wow! Great video. Very easy then!

Really awesome idea 👍🏻
Fantastic! Thank you very much!
You have such great ideas love this one, Thanks
Great tutorial. Thanks!
Great video. I need to build something similar. Those stir plates are spendy
Sweeet! I just made one. 😎😎😎 🍻
Surprisingly i have all these parts
Great Build, Inspired Cheers
Thats so cool. Question: did you glue the 2 magnets to the washer or do they just stay there with their own magnetic force?
How many liters can this stir? would this be enough power for a 4 liter starter?
Can this be used to restructure water?
I enjoyed the video Larry and I might use some of your work to make one just to make it. I hope it is still working for you?
It recently died from the circuit board getting wort spilled on it. Otherwise, it worked fine for years.
Just watched the video and hope to work on this project this week. Where did you pick up the cigar box, local cigar shop?

Does the fan need to have blades? I was thinking of cutting those off to remove air resistance. Not sure how much heat one fan generates.
Do the magnets stay stuck in place or do they eventually drift out, due to the centrifugal force on them?
They held well enough without an adhesive. I think I only had to adjust them once the entire time I had it.
Did you have to add a fuse to the circuit by chance?

Maybe Julie’s Place? It’s been a long time since I last looked it up.
