We live in a world filled with suffering, where attempts to help have been split into largely separate scientific and spiritual communities. As a spiritually engaged neuroscientist I hope to communicate how these seemingly separate world views can be reconciled. I produce weekly videos on topics at the intersection of neuroscience and wellbeing, including consciousness, meditation and psychedelic science.

Thank you all so much for your wonderfully supportive reactions. Sharing these parts of my story was always going to be a huge moment for me and the way you've all received it is everything I could have hoped for. I truly believe encouraging vulnerability and healing is the most powerful thing we can do to improve our situation as a species and you're giving a master class in how it's done. Thank you all again.

Hi James, you're doing a fantastic work here. Thanks for sharing. It is efforts of people like you and others that slightly moves everybody's attention towards putting themselves in a vulnerable context and look inside and unveil the truth about themselves with the hope of healing and staying away from undue suffering.
I personally enjoyed this video for 2 reasons; First, because somehow I can relate to your experience in the past and seeing hope for healing in front of me. Second, because you have dedicated this video to explain the emotional and psychological aspects of the experience separate from the viduals of the experience. Again, thank you so much for sharing.

James, just want to say I have the utmost respect for the courage you have in doing this, not only as a neuroscientist speaking about topics that aren’t (yet) widely accepted in that domain, but also as a human being willing to put yourself and your history out there for the world. It’s all very timely and I hope it continues to catch on.

I wish every African-American could experience this kind of purging. We carry 400 years of trauma in the bones and in the blood. Many times, the violence within some (not all) of our communities is the merging of pain, passion, trauma and anger. Thanks for sharing your experience. I would love to experience this ceremony, but honestly I’m afraid of what would come up and come out!

Hi Dr. Cooke. My name is Adrian Cuerva and I’m a psychologist from Australia. Your healing story was so powerful and I am honoured to have heard it. Thank you so much for sharing. You probably already know this, but the psychotherapeutic process you described is identical to imagery rescripting, an experiential technique used to confront trauma memories. Your story is a testament to how useful such techniques can be even during the maelstrom of a psychedelic journey. Thank you again and I look forward to watching more of your videos.

I have recently completed a 4 night ayahuasca retreat. I am very similar to you, trauma-wise. The caretaking, "overly empathizing," lack of boundaries, bending over, lack of connection to emotions (especially anger). The way you described your childhood self, just like me. "Well behaved" but in reality, traumatized. Raised by a narcissist as well. Always justifying and overly seeing other people's side while not giving myself the love I need. I've done a lot of hard work to try to heal myself, ayahuasca being the most profound and powerful mindblowing experience.
While it was a super powerful experience, I mostly experienced crazy galactic, aliens, god connection, multiple dimensions type of experience. I didn't get a chance to go back into my childhood past which was my intention. Maybe the next ceremony or 2, I'll get there.
Thank you for sharing, it was great hearing this experience from someone so similar to me in psychology.

Wow, that's amazingly similar, thank you for sharing. The reason i didn't focus on the visions in this video because they were also of aliens, space ships and other dimensions that didn't seem to relate to the emotional breakthroughs. I'll cover that in next week's video though.

When the student is ready the teacher shows up. Gratefulness to you for such an eloquently told experience. I was listening and realized how much of what you said began to ring true. I got to the part when you were an infant and that you were sorry for your existence and tears began to flow freely. As a grown woman, this is the first time I've been aware of any such feelings. Those tears came from a deep place. Im the first adopted of 23 siblings. Growing up I chose to "be good, keep quiet and keep moving" vs the alternative. I do appreciate my upbringing and the family I was raised in. My birth mom has lived a very difficult life and she made the right choice. Your video showed me that I have been carrying so much of her pain and indecision of giving me up as well as feelings of guilt and shame that I'm still "not good enough" or worthy because I've not done enough in my life to repay her for the gift of life that she gave me. Clearly these are some disempowering beliefs! I learned more about myself in 21:11 minutes, then I ever did in therapy. Thank you for the insight. Time to process it and let it go. Maybe plant medicine is in my future 😉. Thank you again, I wasn't expecting so much insight from a RUclips video? It's a cool world we live in that we are able to learn, share and connect in this way from anywhere in the world. Much love and peace to you.

It's his interesting to see how many people have had similar trauma, I know only to well what it feels like to grow up under a narcissistic abusive person, though each story is individualized, the trauma is similar for sensitive empathetic children.
And it's not an easy pain to transmute it's evasive and deep. I have not done ayahuasca but I can see how it goes into those layers that we generally can't access easily. When the time is right I may give it a try, even though I think I've done a lot of the work to clear it. There may still be some of the weight in the background. So thanks for sharing this it gives insight, all of us deserve to be free of trauma.

      ꧁ayahuasca꧂
is not a Psychedelic. ayahuasca is a muddy slurry of many compounds, some of them being hallucinogens. Sadly, most humans confuse the hallucinations they experience from poisonous drugs with the Visions and Revelations they receive from the Psychedelics.
The Psychedelics DMT and sometimes 5-MeO-DMT are the Psychedelic found in that “witches brew” of a tourist trap sensation known as an ayahuasca ceremony. It would be much better for a human to ingest the Pure Psychedelic Molecules, always. ayahuasca is the quintessential act of “drinking from the Cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons”.
Of course the human body recognizes ayahuasca for what it is, poison, and the human body in harm reduction mode causes most humans to reject and eject it. Not before enough has been absorbed to cause hallucinations and very distorted and corrupted communication with God (the DMT and/or 5-MeO-DMT). The sham man explains the vomiting as purging your poisons/toxins, bad spirits, etc. The truth is that your body just rejected and vomited that concoction you were given. We have been shown that it is always better to ingest the Pure Psychedelic Molecule.
The Psychedelics have clearly shown that the humans on the earth right now referring to themselves as a shaman do not know Who God is and is not teaching the Psychedelic’s ways and Laws, but rather, a combination of their own mind’s folly coupled with the ridiculous teachings of the other humans who still belong to the world of darkness.
False prophets of jerusalem = all the humans who purport to teach about the Psychedelics but don’t even know who the Psychedelics are.
At least the sham men use the proper noun to name themselves:
      sham
      /SHam/
      noun
      1. 1.
a thing that is not what it is purported to be."the alleged teacher of God is a farce and a sham"

Similar:

      Opposite:
the Truth
the genuine article
About all of the false teachers of my Parents in Heaven Who are all True Psychedelics:
“Horrible things have I seen in the prophets of Jerusalem
They follow false gods, they lie, they abet evil doers
Till not a soul will repent
For the prophets of Jerusalem have spread profanity
      Over the whole land
This is the warning of the Lord of Hosts
Never listen to what the false prophets say
They fill you up with idle hopes and tell you fancies of their own
      Not anything the Lord says
All will be well they repeat to people who scorn what the Lord says
No harm will come to you they tell the folk who follow their own stubborn minds
Which of these prophets ever saw the council of the Lord?
Which of them ever heard or grasped a word of the Creator?
I never sent the prophets yet they ran
I never spoke to them and yet they prophecy
If they had ever stood within my council - and heard a word of mine
They would have made my people turn from evil ways and evil deeds
Am I a God at hand and not a God far off?
Can anyone conceal themselves out of my sight?
Do not I fill Heaven and earth? the Lord asks
Will they never give over these prophets of falsehood?
Who preach their own illusions - and would make my folk forget my name?
By the dreams they tell each other as once their parents forgot me for baal”

Very moving story. Thank you so much. This resonated with me. In my first Ayahuasca ceremony the theme presented to me was that of reconnecting with my inner traumatized child that had been in hiding for some time.
Maybe 8-months later I was endulging in a drink, maybe in a little too much, and I had this insane flashback where I heard the screams of a child and the vision of an angry adult (me) drowning the child in alcohol.
This theme of inner child is something we can’t take lightly.

People with your courage and that survived such an abusive amount of suffering and turn out to be good and so honest and wanting to heal themselves and others is what makes me believe in humans and gives me all the truth about God existence. I m happy that you choose Portugal, I m from Portugal and I imagine how happy and loved you ll be here. All the best and all the love for you and your partner. Grateful for this video.

Not gonna pretend I've gone through the same direct level of trauma that you have, but I can relate to the feeling of irrelevance and pointlessness. I'm from Margate in Kent which is also a shithole, and I was raised in a very oppressive religious cult that stunted my emotional and social development, so a lot of what you say hits home, even if more on an indirect level. Very well articulated video, appreciate it bro.

I silently cheered too, in my mind, by hearing you letting out the roar, the empowerment, the coming in, or integrating back into your body. And no you certainly don´t give an impression of being a psychopath, by your vision of you striking down the abuser with a bat. You clearly show a understanding of, that the abuser have their own story, who have made them into who they are, and that they themselves need help. Which reminds me of a quote that goes like this: "Those who are the hardest to love, are usually the ones who needs it the most". (From the book: Way of the peaceful warrior, by Dan Millman).
The vision of you striking down the abuser with a bat, is a symbolic action, and representation of what you needed the most. Someone who could stand up for you and protect you from harm, and by doing so in your vision, you thereby embody and integrate yourself, from a perspective of the you, in your present form (from an cognitive adult space) to the representation and perspective of the child in you, who once experienced what you did (from a childs lacking cognitive ability to understand and comprehend, what was happening). This is where true healing take place. It would actually not be unusual for someone in your position, to have had the feeling and urge, to completely annihilate that abuser into oblivion.

      Juliana Cordero 🙏
      ꧁ayahuasca꧂
is not a Psychedelic. ayahuasca is a muddy slurry of many compounds, some of them being hallucinogens.

Similar:

imposture
fraud
feint

      Opposite:
the Truth
the genuine article

I can relate so much to your trauma! Obviously no two people share the same experiences. But the part about the narcissists, boundaries and the symbolism in the vision of enforcing those boundaries - I could relate so much!
The problem is that I've done a lot of reading on this and I do indeed understand all this at an intellectual level, but I don't feel them. Not at a visceral level. My body and conditioning is not in tune with what I know. I believe what you experienced through ayahuasca was that exact transition. I hope to be able to attend a retreat like this sometime soon.

That sounds spot on, it was definitely a process of leaving behind the rational mind and integrating it at the level of animal intelligence, so that my body felt intuitively how it was okay to respond before my mind could talk me out of it (that's the conditioning that keeps one trapped in the traumatic dynamic). I'm so glad it was helpful!

Thank you Dr James, your story has touched my heart, for I also have experienced childhood trouble. As an adult I would always speak to people as children acknowledge adults (yes sir, no sir, never speak unless spoken too). It took me many years to finally accept the person I am before seeing others as my peers. Now I make an effort to engage others using their name instead of a respectable child like version of myself. I am curious if some of the depression and anxiety I still experience can be explored through this drink you are describing. Thanks and have a great day. 👍

      Jada Douglas 🙏
      ꧁Consciousness꧂
DMT and 5-MeO-DMT are two of the Molecules that comprise a human’s Consciousness. All True Psychedelics are the Molecular Structures of Pure Consciousness. The human body synthesizes it’s own Consciousness (the DMT & 5-MeO-DMT found in humans). The human body then metabolizes the Consciousness that it is producing. The amount of the endogenous Consciousness that the human body is able to metabolize depends on many factors. The less pollutants, poison & other contaminants present in the body will result in the ability to metabolize more of the Consciousness that body is producing. Likewise, the more pollution, contaminants and poison a body has inside of it the less Consciousness it is able to metabolize. Here is a list of some of the most common poisons that humans ingest regularly which interferes with a human body metabolizing the Consciousness that it produces, as well as any Consciousness that is ingested from external sources:
alcohol, nicotine, sugar, caffeine, amphetamines, dissociatives, tranquilizers, flouride, and a plethora of other drugs are just some of the substances that interfere with humans metabolizing their own Consciousness.
“Even the priests who regularly come near to the Lord must purify themselves”.
      (Exodus 19:22)
The following substances are NOT Psychedelics:
      mdma
      ketamine
      salvia
      kratom
      dipt
      pcp
      datura/jimson weed
      dxm
      There are others . . . . . . .
Any True Psychedelic will proclaim this Truth if you ask Them.
The following substances are True Psychedelics - They are Alive, Omnicient Living Beings of Light:
      DMT
      5-MeO-DMT
      LSD
      Mescaline
      Ibogaine
      Psilocin
      Psilocybin
      THC
      DPT
      DET
      Muscimol
      There are others . . . .
So if a human can achieve 100% purity within their bodies, with zero contaminants or pollution (an unattainable state in these current bodies) and managed to metabolize 100% of the endogenous Psychedelics that their physical body is producing (DMT & 5-MeO-DMT), that would be the limit to how Conscious that human can be. In order for a human to become more Conscious than this, they must put more Consciousness into their physical bodies. You must put more Molecules of Consciousness inside of your physical body in order to attain a Higher level of Consciousness. When you ingest Psychedelics you see Them that you just ingested, not some doorway or window or a “portal” to somewhere else or some entity somewhere else. When you ingest LSD, the Light that you see is the LSD Themselves, very Beautiful Living Beings of Light. When you ingest DMT, the Entity you see and hear is the Living Light Beings DMT Themselves. The same is true for All True Psychedelics.
There is this part from Scripture:
“They are the Eternal among things that pass away. Pure Consciousness, of Conscious Beings. The ONE who fulfills the prayers of many. Only the wise who see Them in their Souls attain the Peace Eternal”
      (Katha Upanishad)
The Physical Body of Consciousness is The Flesh of God. The Flesh of God is the True Communion Entity (the Eucharist). The Flesh of God (the Psychedelic) is the Fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and evil. Our Bodies truly are the Temple of God because God the Psychedelic Lives within it.
      As Saint Paul says:
“We are only the earthenware jars that hold this treasure, to make it clear that such an overwhelming power comes from God and not from us”.
      (2 Corinthians 4:7)
This part explains why the human body is the Temple of God - because God Lives inside of the body. So whether or not a person is ingesting Psychedelics, every single human’s body is God’s Temple because DMT & 5-MeO-DMT Live within it. Anything you do to hurt or harm your body you do to harm God’s Temple. This understanding is a good Foundation, a good step towards a person Knowing God and being able to stay with Them both in this Lifetime & afterwards.
“O just Creator, though the world has not known you,
      But I have known you
      And these have known that You have sent me;
So have I declared, so will I declare
      Your Name to them,
That the Love with which you have loved me
      May be in them
      and I in them”.

Your background is similar to mine (parental narcissistic abuse), and your purge experience was also similar to mine.
Prior to the purge, I was plagued with awful, heavy emotions, which conjured up memories of my mother ragefully screaming at me "IT'S YOUR FAULT!" .
But then came the purge, well, there was four purges in total.
Like you, my diaphragm shot up and I purged on the exhale, however, the diaphragm stayed up.
I was gasping for breath, trying to suck air into my lungs, then I purged again, three more times.
    Each time, gasping for breath.
I could feel that I was suffocating and that consciousness was ebbing away as my vision faded.
Similarly, I roared like you did.
But what followed this was truly horrific, an experience that I will never forget.
At the moment the purging stopped, looking back, and describing it now, if felt as though my soul had just broken.
I can only describe it as the point at which someone has experienced such physical and mental torture, that the soul splits open to let out its light.
It felt like something had snapped. It felt at the time, that there was no coming back from this, I was done!
My mouth hung open, as I started into nothingness, limp and lifeless on the floor.
Over the next hour or so, my faculties and analytical mind started to come 'back on line'.
I was able to categorise the feeling, and could see how it relates to child abuse, and how subconsciously, it can be passed down the generational line, encoded into acts of rage and depravity.
Each act, laying a seed, which grows in the dark, only to be manifested as further acts of abuse, both to the self and others.
Although this reasoning and understanding gave me context, why it thrust me into such a horrific experience when (as far as I know), I haven't suffered any kind of sexual child abuse, is something I really don't know.
It still left me feeling quite numb to this day.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I have been considering doing this but have been nervous. My eldest daughter who was only 31 died on the 8 May, 2020. It was suddenly. She had addiction issues and was in a very abusive relationship. The person she was in the relationship with contributed to her death. I just can’t move forward.. I’m living with guilt and regret for not doing more, or not doing enough. My soul is heavy and I feel I have nothing to look forward to in life. I have another daughter Lisa, who I love very much. And I know I have to be strong for her. She has high functioning autism. My daughter Sarah who died was very close to me. We were friends and mother and daughter. She was my confidant, and sometimes became the mother at times when I was unwell. She looked out for me all the time and told me always she loved me. I miss her dearly and don’t know how I am to continue with my life. Maybe this treatment would help me. I am worried about the fear within me while doing this. I would really appreciate your comments. Thank you! Diane

Going to a 23 days retreat that includes yoga, meditation and dieta in Peru next week. My own work is similar to yours, I started with underground MDMA therapy, mushrooms and now working with Ayahuasca. I have worked 3 times with Aya now before leaving and I had similar visions with the feathers on the skin and of course re-experiencing the trauma, allowing anger is very important in my opinion, because it allows these energies created during self-abandonment to be transmuted into a sense of pride. I find that the self-therapy "internal family system" is synergestic with psychedelic therapy. If you don't know about it, it is a proces for meeting the cognitive parts inside us and re-parent ourselves. Check "Self-Therapy: A Step-By-Step Guide to Creating Wholeness and Healing Your Inner Child Using IFS, A New, Cutting-Edge Psychotherapy" if this process interests you.

James, well done - such a calm, erudite and clear narrative of the power of the healing plants. On a personal note - your journey wuth narcissism is very similar to my own - boy you made me laugh with the baseball bat story! Many many years ago on my first attempt at a 'hug your inner child' exercise, I was appalled to find my 5 year old self taking a baseball bat to my adoptive mother.! I was horrified. Narcissusm was not a topic either clearly defined nor openly spoken about at that time. As a child of narcissistic parenting I had no concept of healthy boundaries nor what constituted abuse. Needless to say, I went on to marry a narcissist. Years of therapy and self work were a first step in the healing process, but the power of the healing plants has been exponential. Fast forward 20 years and I now hold space and facilitate shamen journeys - something I could never have conceived as a disempowered adult child. I'm delighted to see more and more westerners realising the wisdom behind this traditional healing process. Long may big pharma be kept out of the loop.

Im a psychologist & during college experimented with LSD, Psilocybin, Mescalin, MDMA & DMT. I didnt use these substances in a recreational way by going to a music festival & so forth. I was very curious on the neurological impact of these chemicals & their effect on consciousness, specifically the introspective nature of the experiences - for a psychologist it simply doesnt get better than that. I think they played a substantial role in my studies & provided insight I would never have been able to get without their use. It totally transformed my perception of consciousness & made me a better psychologist overall. When I read about Jung's concepts of the "Anima" & "Animus" (male & female energy) & discover a female entity in a psychedelic experience i know im talking to a part of myself that is hidden from view in ordinary consciousness & it puts Jung's concepts into perspective. Of course theres no way that we can objectively know if Jung was correct, but the fact that males tend to engage with female entities they perceive as mother earth, female energy of the cosmos or whatever & females tend to experience male entities they perceive as a god of sort is fascinating & exactly what Jung spoke of. Without psychedelics we hamper our understanding of ourselves & cannot develop our theories fully

@@tiaan7032 Thanks for your unique and interesting perspective. I found what you wrote fascinating, even that part about Anima and Animus. Your patients are lucky to have someone like you who goes the extra mile (literally) to help patients. We could all use someone like you.

@@amylee9 I explained it pretty poorly due to being youtube comment & writing it in 20 secs or so, but you get the point. Research Jung's Anima & Animus its very interesting & there are many psychology videos on youtube delving deeper into the nature of Jung's concepts as observed during psychedelic states. Lets just say its no coincidence males tend to have more encounters with female entities & females the opposite

That's interesting. I wonder if that mother-father perceptions have anything to do with the vital energies we have. In Eastern spiritual traditions it's said the male and female essence come together at the conception and they reside in the lower chakra (female) and top chakra (male) thereafter until our death when they merge in our heart and leave the body from there. It would be interesting to see if the perceptions (earth-god) Jung wrote about have anything to do with the energy gender polarity.

with people like you and the caliber of your intention we can factually change and return to our natural ways of being.
i appreciate and i have savored your video intimately.
in a way, my wet dream for our collective was to hear open minded key professions to try connecting to their reality of Self.
i say professions because i get a sense that neuroscience is one of your authentic flow masks which you use to relate to the rest of our masks or games as i like to call them. when all games connect, they realize the amplitude of bliss embedded in what we call God's Creation, although even this does not bring honor to what life really is.
sending toruses of love and gratitude, irrespective of our linear time :)
