I made this for a 9yr old and a fussy 6yr old. I thought my 9yr old would go into a food coma 😂 my 6yr old ate about 80% even though she doesn't enjoy mash.. the tasty sauce made it all delicious! It's a heavy meal, prefect for a English winters day

I make something very similar using leeks, onion & garlic sweated, with cheese sauce & grated cheese on top of potato. I have been known to make a pastry base & topped with potato mash too.
Thanks for the receipe -it is a favourite of my sons now.
I tried this last night. I think I used too deep a dish as the mash I had left was barely enough to make a top and was wafer thin. I also had issues with the mash being sticky, making it hard to smooth out but that might be due to the previous issue and I was compacting it too much.
I also think I added a little too much water so I had to cook it off for longer. Also, and this is just me, I’d probably use 500ml milk next time as my filling was a touch too runny. That’s my fault though.
Despite all that, it still tasted damn good! The apple adds a discreet sweetness and the whole thing is hearty and warming. Will try again for sure!

Since I'm not fond of apples going to try this with fennel instead for a sweet element. It goes so well with sausages too.

In the oven as I type... The mashed potatoes caused massive issues and I had to plead with them to not stick to the paper but they were having none of it. 30 minutes until it's ready and already smells lovely! Can't wait.
I neevverrrr cook recipes, like to do my own thing, but this one looked so good. I made it :D Can't wait to eat it!!
