I've visited his grave and life sized statue in Alton. You think you can tell yourself what it might be like to see a 9 foot tall human being but seeing just how big he was in reality is mind boggling.
My mother (1926 - 2019) grew up in the same neighborhood of Upper Alton (Illinois) as Robert Wadlow and went to the same schools, although were not in the same grades. He was never treated as a freak in his home town and was a gentleman in every respect. Mom told me that Robert never failed to say Hello and chat with her in the neighborhood and he dealt with his disability as best he could. My father and my paternal grandfather both worked for International Shoe Co. in nearby St Louis (Missouri) which made his shoes.
I don't believe that your mother was born in 1926 and lived to 2019 I'm sorry statistically people barely don't live past 93 but if she really did that's really cool
We need more of this kind of videos by Guinness. More of the narrated back stories behind the records, how they’re possible, who are the people behind them etc
Random fact: Male neanderthals stood on average 5’5” while female Neanderthals were 5’. Having to hunt predictors bigger, faster, stronger, and more dangerous while meat eating dinosaurs could eat you an an appetizer. In comparison that’s like you going up against a giraffe (which resembles a long neck dinosaur then a chicken does) or an elephant or a hippopotamus (hippo) without any guns just a spear, a slingshot, maybe a torch, and any other weapons you/ they crafted at that time.
My father met Robert Wadlow back in 1938, Robert was appearing in a parade in Illinois at my fathers hometown. After the parade , Robert met with the people who attended. Robert signed a photograph of himself for my Dad of which I still have today. Enjoyed this video!
I owe a lot to Robert Wadlow. When I was 11 and then 12 I was constantly reading the Guinness book of World Records and came upon his story. I must have reread it dozens of times, noticing in particular his height at his various childhood ages. He was taller than me at age 12, but only by a few inches. The book claimed he had Gigantism, which led me to my doctor and saying I think I have Gigantism as well. Here I was, a 12 yr old girl and I was already 6'4". The last inch I grew happened over only 6 weeks. I went to my Doctor who laughed at me saying " You're tall because your father was tall.". My father was 6'5" full adult height and male...how much sense does it make that I would "naturally" be 6'4" at age 12 and female ??? My mother had to raise her voice quite a bit with this Doctor ( wondering still if she got her medical diploma off a cornflakes box ) so finally this doctor did consent to take some bloodwork on me. Well, a couple days later, now I was being called in for an Xray of my head. Jee whiz, well the blood work was this, a test of my growth hormone level. Normal was ( I don't know what units they were using then ) 0-5, iffy was 5-10, and here my result was 42.5...suddenly the doctor wasn't laughing anymore. The Xray was reviewed by an endocrinologist at the local University and in the pituitary area there was a hazy area all through it, indicating a tumor. Guess what, just like I guessed, I had Gigantism. I went through hell and back with about 30 CAT scans, piles of Xrays, blood tests, poking, prodding etc etc and then the hell surgery ( that would take pages to describe the painful hell that was ) to remove the tumor through the back of my sinuses. If it wasn't for Robert Wadlow's story getting me on the right track of what I had, I would have grown goodness knows how tall and had no life. An extra special THANK YOU to Dr. B.K. Weir who did the surgery under a microscope and it never grew back.
This is sad because he still hasnt stopped growing when he died, just imagine how much taller he couldve grown, Robert wouldve for sure topped 9 Ft tall
He really couldn't feel his feet and legs anymore. That's what ultimately caused his death, the braces he wore rubbed on one of his ankles causing a blister. Since he had little to no feeling in his legs by the time he discovered it, it was too late and infection set in. Doctors did all they could for him but due to the time period they didn't have the proper equipment or technology to save him and he died from the infection that ravaged his body. It's sad and unfortunate but at least he will always be remembered and admired due to his size and friendly nature.
@@williamwallace4080 the funny thing is, in the photo he gets measured in, and every photo that was taken of him, he was standing straight, but wasnt able to stand as tall as he possibly can because of his legs, so personally i think he was probably 9’0 or 9’1, in his height it also said he was 8’11 1/2 so he definitely is 9 fr he just couldnt stand as tall as he can

Neil Fingleton's the tallest I've met with no known condition contributing to his height; I learned from him never to compete with a true giant in a drinking game - the boy could sink those pints in seconds, like he was taking a shot!)

John Middleton was a knight born in 16 th centuary Apparently he was 9 ft 3 in/2.82 cms, or 10 cms taller than robert He was probably the only person we ever known to reach over 9 ft, but that is only people we know of, trough history there might have been people that are taller than even him but we will never know
@@Vuk3 I'm pretty sure it's been concluded that Middleton wasn't even 8 feet tall. he was somewhere around 7'6 or 7'7. No doubt extremely tall for the time but the 9+ feet claim is greatly exagerated.
An infected ankle might not have been a death sentence for most people in 1940 either, but because Robert could barely feel below his knees, he didn't notice his until it was too late to be treated.
I have been so fascinated with things like this, and I really admire Robert Wadlow for his tall stature. I saw in an article once that he absolutely hated when people called him bad names, associating him with the circus. But nonetheless, I have heard he was an incredibly sweet, charming, and very well-dressed man. He was also so well-spoken. So sad he passed away, but for the time he lived, he changed the world.
I once met a guy that was 7'4 he was on my plane ride home to Orlando. I myself am 6'4 already tall for a person. Standing next to him was like standing next to my dad when I was 8. U can't fathom the size of someone that big they are massive.
Impossible, his bones, especially his knees can't even handle his own weight. But imagine if he's athletic, he would be: 1. The fastest man ever 2. GOAT in any contact sport 3. Scariest bodybuilder of all time
@@hblrochris7508 you can't say that it's impossible for him to even hold his own weight and talk about him being a bodybuilder your contradicting yourself
Robert's record will never be broken. Imagine if Robert could have lived to just 30 Robert would have reached 10 feet tall. Simply amazing growth rate that could not be stopped medically at that time.
Note a giant over 8 feet tall could not perform any strength training as person would immediately suffer s heart attack. Human heart isnt built to maintain true giant, over 8 feet, stature past age of 35, if u add weight training in mix 8 footer or over dies immediately from heart failure. Any person over 8 feet is either walking w/ clutches, in a wheelchair or in very rare case full leg braces that are extremely uncomfortable. Robert didnt want to use crutches I think because that would have made him appear sickly or entirely unhealthy. But if Robert would have used crushed there would have been a chance for him to live 5 more years to the age of only 27. In those extra 5 years Robert was averaging growth of 2 inches per year w/o very possible growth spurt. There would have been a viable reason to have officially measured a 27 year Robert at 9 feet 10 inches tall. In order to attain that age of 27 at almost 10 feet tall Robrrt would have had to accept a life of mostly not going out on tour but almost always being bed ridden which is not offer any quality of life that he did have until Robert died at 22. Imagine Robert is only person who could have possibly approached 10 feet in height. 9 feet in height will never be approached again.
The majority of the tallest people who've ever lived have suffered with an overactive pituitary gland causing the continued growth. These days this kind of issue can be easily cured but there are still some folks in the poorer regions of the world where getting help is much more difficult. Being very tall has so many negatives on the human body which is such a shame for people who aren't able to get help early on in life.
I was more impressed at the world's tallest wrestler Jorge Gonzalez aka El Gigante aka Giant Gonzalez of Argentina who stood 7 foot 7 and a quarter inches. Nobody in wrestling or Argentinan history have ever matched his height in the ring. Sadly he passed away in 2010 due to complications with diabetes.
Andre the Giant had a difficult time living at the size he was, and he wasn't even 7'6", and he lived in the mid-20th century. I can't believe how hard it had to be for Robert. Great video. I have been following Robert Wadlow since I first saw his picture in a Guinness book from the 80's. Some of the footage you showed in this video is completely new to me. Kudos.
Robert took care of himself the best he could, while Andre had more fun in overeating & drinking cases of beer at one sitting. That is why they both had most different body sizes at the time of their passings. Still do respect them both.
Fun fact: Robert was from Alton Illinois. The first four letters in the name of that town spell the word (tall or high) in Spanish. I think you're wrong, I think eventually there will be someone to break that record, but probably long after we're all dead.
Väinö Myllyrinne (27 February 1909 - 13 April 1963) was a finnish giant In 1962, just a year before his death, he was measured by doctors at 2.48 m (8 ft 1.5 in). He had a 290 mm (11.4 in) hand span, the greatest known.
@Cassandra Rodén ft From Russia With Metalheads sad... but then u also have an advantage, u see the world way way better than we do.. I'm 5'5 but im 14 so ill prolly go to 5'10 or 5'11
Robert is my favourite record, I've been fascinated for over 30 years about him. I've even made a life size statue a work with his name around his neck, my work mates are amazed how tall he was , rather than say 8 11 its easier to just look at that height, he also had biggest hands and feet ever.
Yes, it's unheard of to die from a metal brace to his knee all the way down to his ankle to help him walk, but the metal brace give him an affection that killed him at the age of 22 years old on July 15th, 1940.
I thought about this a lot recently, but it's actually quite common. The same sort of thing led to Christopher Reeve's death. If you can't feel a part of your body and you develop a sore or blister, all it takes is a day or two for it to be infected, and only a few more days after that...septic. In Wadlow's case, I'm sure that his massive size complicated treatment. It wasn't as if it was the dark ages. They had antibiotics in 1940. I mean it was penicillin, but they had it. But someone that large would massively complicate the dosage needed. Which is why they probably switched to blood transfusions. He had circulation problems as it was, so any sore that he got on his feet was going to be a pain to treat anyway. Even today people die of sepsis if you don't catch it super early. It was a complicated situation. Unfortunately it took his life. If he had lived, he would have definitely eclipsed 9 ft.
That highlights from the doctor’s report are so bizarre. By all accounts Robert was intelligent, kind and very concerned about being tidy. What was that doctor up to?
1:48: Actually, the tallest woman that's ever lived was a girl named Trijntje Keever who grew to 254cm (8'4"), as far as I know properly measured, until she sadly passed away at 17 years old. This means that she was taller than Robert Wadlow at 17, so realizing that she could've rivaled his height is crazy!
It was a long time ago so we don't have much evidence and few documentation on her actual height so it was left out because she's only allegedly that tall, no actual proof, meaning it wasn't scientifically measured and documented
She may have made it to 8’9 maybe, women stop growing before men. Although very possible she could have been over 9 feet if she lived longer . Wish there was a documentary about this or something.
@@j.h.4711 It was like 400 years ago, no actual proof, no pictures, no videos, etc so first off, it wasn't even sure that she is that tall, second there was no camera so of course documentation was impossible and painting is unreliable
his existence proves that it isnt impossible for someone like Goliath to have actually existed historically. its only a one inch difference. i just find that neat
Well, Goliaths height at 6 cubits and a span is like 11.5 ft so way beyond Wadlow. But also, it's likely just an exaggeration since the older copies of the bible say that he was only 4 cubits and a span, or 7 ft 10 inch. Stories get exaggerated over time.
@@josaphcj7199 yeah, because they were based off the size of a forearm and people were different heights at different times. In older copies of the bible it was 4.5 cubits and that was when cubits were shorter. In newer copies it was 6.5 cubits and that was when cubits were longer. So the difference is even more exaggerated.

Fr
He would have died from many other health problems before reaching ten feet. Heart, ankles, blood pressure....etc.
How we know it won’t be broken there’s a man 8,3 right now so it’s possible

The majority of the tallest people who've ever lived have suffered with an overactive pituitary gland causing the continued growth.
These days this kind of issue can be easily cured but there are still some folks in the poorer regions of the world where getting help is much more difficult.
Being very tall has so many negatives on the human body which is such a shame for people who aren't able to get help early on in life.

Amazing video. What pisses me off so much about the whole story is that such a stupid injury led to his death
We'll remember Robert as an awesome giant and his Dr as... I'd rather not say but they both will be remembered for who they was in life ❤
That highlights from the doctor’s report are so bizarre. By all accounts Robert was intelligent, kind and very concerned about being tidy. What was that doctor up to?
That's why having too much can become a curse.
There’s a statue of him in Copenhagen. When you stand next to it you get a much better idea of just how tall he was.
Excellent video. Solid research. Great Presentation. Thank you.
@@angelerror4086 Yeah, I didn't see anyone question it online, weirdly enough, so I always assumed she was truely measured
Well if she was measured she would have been known as the tallest human. I have never heard of her.
@@baxterwilliams2170 cubits had different values during different times
@@josaphcj7199 yeah, because they were based off the size of a forearm and people were different heights at different times.
In older copies of the bible it was 4.5 cubits and that was when cubits were shorter.
In newer copies it was 6.5 cubits and that was when cubits were longer.
So the difference is even more exaggerated.
