Watch the statistics in the video "Country alcohol consumption comparison."
In Europe the highest alcohol consumption countries are: The 1st Moldova. The 2nd Lithuania. Tge 3rd Chechia and the 4th Germany.
Finland's alcohol consumption is in the middle of Europe. For instance Russiaa, Latvia, Estonia, Hungary, Romania, Belarus, UK, Ireland, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Andorra, Cypros, Serbia, Poland, Portugaletc. Are ahead of Finland.

In Finland we have quite a small group of heavy drinkers who are responsible of the amounts of alcohol consumed in Finland. A majority of us are eather average users or those who drink sometimes or not at all. It makes me sad to hear over and over again that we finns are always or mostly drunk. I don't drink alcohol at all, not because its a problem to have a glass sometimes but because I don't see any point with it. I prefer a mug of coffee instead.
But I'm glad to hear you like Finland 😊

@@stinak7924 I think the general statistics about the Finnish drinking is that about 10 % are heavy drinkers that consume about 50 % of all alcohol. Besides in 2023, 12% of the population, 10% of men and 14% of women were non-drinkers. I am always sober, so I belong to a small minority, but my friends don't drink much even beer whatever we do.

Interesting, thanks! About Finns and alcohol: Finns actually consume less alcohol per head than the Germans, French, Brits, not to talk about the eastern Europe. The alcohol consumption has been declining for many years now, especially the younger generations drink less these days. But yes, there still are Finns who like to drink. About the Russian language: I don't know where in Finland you live but rather few native Finns speak Russian, it has always been a rare language at school. Russian speakers make the largest immigrant group in Finland, though, many of the them live in eastern Finland. Finland has received around 60k refugees from Ukraine, some of them speaks Russian, too.

Almost more Ukrainians than Russians over here now(I live in Espoo) and very few can separate the language if you don't speak a Slavic language. Was in the store when one fin reacted to some Ukrainians as they would have been Russians. Even I sit on the train staring at people that looks too happy and speak a slavic language, but they usually have some kind of symbol if they at least support Ukraine so then I stop.
Yes I worked with a Russian guy for years but he supported Putin so it kinda made me think differently about him.
Can't say anything else than if you are from Ukraine then wear your flag because we kinda carry an anger towards our mutual neighbor(then also a Russian carrying the colors of Ukraine at least shows sympathy or has to hide behind Ukraine, both goes for me).

@@amadeuz8161 sounds like you are doing/attempting some passive variation of ethnic profiling purely based on observation of people expressing joy/happiness, Slavic language and if there's a symbol, yet you don't care if it's genuine or virtue signaling, you don't care who these people are, their origin, opinions etc. because you already made up your mind, did I miss anything?

@@snekbaev If you know something about the history between Finland and Muscovia then you do understand why a Russian taking shelter here while their messed up country destroys homes and families in Ukraine. So if they are here taking shelter while their country rapes, kills, loots, razes... then they better wave the Ukrainian flag and high.
My point was that it is hard to separate a slav from a slav so when they speak a slavic language it sounds for me as a slavic language so if they are Russian they are not welcome except if they clearly show support for Ukraine or more important show that they are against their own country and what it is doing.
So you now trying to twist something out of it, there are a lot of saying about Russians here but none of them tells of a Russian changing or thinking they have done anything wrong.... So when Russia return Karelia, Kola and Ingria. Asking for forgivness from every Ingrian still living today for what they did then that day we can start to talk about origin and opinions. Happily those Ukrainians and Belarusian moved into my grandmothers lands, like if they would be pure they wouldn't take that land or even their relatives today live on it becuase it is not theirs! So you feel sorry for those bstrds, I am waiting for the day when I can honor my ancestors and hunt the muscovian kind in the Uralic forests that strech all the way to the Pacific.
So you go read the real history of the Ural Altaic peoples and the Slavic ones and then come again to me and say I should show respect to a Muscovian.

I don't agree that Finland is a difficult country to live if you don't drink alcohol. In day to day life, alcohol is not present in any way. People often drink milk with the food instead of wine. Water, soft drink and juice are also popular drinking options. If you are invited to a cocktail party, there is always a non-alcoholic options, since somebody has to drive home, and most people are responsible enough to not drive under the influence. The hosts are aware of this, and always provide alternative drinks.
So you could easily live without alcohol if you want to. Though Finland does consume quite a lot of alcohol per capita per year. That is because when finnish people drink, they really drink. It is unbeleavable how much some people can drink. Occasionally it breaks the newsbarrier how somebody was over 3‰ drunk. I think I would be dead if I was that drunk, but those people must be at least semi-professionals to develop a tolerance like that.
Even those drinking parties is acceptable to participate sober, by being the designated driver. So even that part of society is open if you don't drink alcohol. I try to think of a place where you couldn't, but even the vine of the sacrament in the church has non-alcoholic option provided. If there is a situation where you have to drink alcohol, I cant figure one out, so please help me with it?
Actually what is much more difficult drink to avoid is coffee. That is everywhere, several times each day, and you are viewed as a difficult person if you request something else. It's even baked into the language, breaks are often calked coffee breaks, if you don't drink coffee you are an outsider. If you ask someone to come with you to a date, you often ask if they would want to have a coffee with you (even when neither of you actually drink coffee) Sometimes in events there is a tea option also, but again you are a second class citicen, having just hot water and then having to brew your own tea, and then have to figure out what to do with the thrash. There is an option to make a readily made tea that anybody could just take, but that is rarely an option, the messaging is that the event is primarily a coffee event, tea drinkers are lucky to have anything at all as an afterthought.

Okey, must admit Tea isn’t an easy drink in that sense, but still... I wonder how British people find it here? Although I myself do like coffee too except if I’m offered a non-grease milk with it 🤦‍♀️. And for the evening visits I bring my own non-theanine teabag with me 😂. "A lot people speak Russian" is pretty relative and perhaps even subjective perception. In Finland, about 1.5% speak Russian as their mother tongue, in cities like Helsinki (2.7%) and Lappeenranta (>4%) there are relatively more speakers, but not many percent.

Not even close, even when you dedicade your whole life to work. I actually think its easier to achieve pretty decent (upper)middle clas life in Finland, with just basic effort and lots of free time and benefits.
One thing with money and Finland is modesty. You see people around you, while missing out totally how good life they live. There is lots of hidden money in Finland, but when you dont see all the richness, cars, mansions, white parties, yachts you think it means richness dont exist. I'm super scared of walking on ice, I definitely don't do it unless I've prepared for everything. So many people drown every winter, for example one Winter at least seven people drowned in my municipality (with a population of 130k). There's this super scary cartoon thing they showed to us as kids called "Varokaa heikkoa jäätä!"
Finns are the worst when it comes to respecting water. For example, when I was 18, me and my friends went on an island cottage to party. Beforehand we all agreed that no one would go swimming when drunk. During the party, everyone went swimming while super drunk, and when I asked them "what about the promise?" they just got super angry at me and kept swimming. It was pitch-black too, so if someone would have got themselves into trouble, there would have been very little we could do, because the visibility was 0, and we had no flashlights or anything like that.
So the lesson of the story is: if your Finnish friends do reckless stuff regarding ice or water, don't follow them - remember: Finns are completely suicidal when it comes to water. Just look at our 'Midsummer bingo': people guess how many people are going to drown on the day of 'Midsummer' also known as 'Juhannus'. One Midsummer (year 2016), nine people drowned.

      1. Yes some people fall through the ice and drown, some experienced too because its a shock. Many times its also old people that have done this their entire and they know, so when the heart aint as stong anymore the shock is enough even if they have pulled themselves 100's of times before from the hole. The other group is people seeing other people on the ice thinking the ice is as thick in every spot and have no clue about the waters. So ignorant people thinking we that ice fish drill holes every 10m do it because we are searching for fish or then they see a drilled hole and think someone has been there not understanding that the ice changes very fast and that holecould be a marker for the fisher not to go further out/closer to the current. Of course we have daredevils but they are usually prepared for falling through the ice when they skate on like 1-2cm thick ice(I have been ice fishing on 4-5cm thick ice and it bends).
      2. The swimming drunk aint that horrible or dangerous, its the jumping and diving that is dangerous if you are too drunk and if its dark outside without moonlight you might not know whats up or down. I have been swimming drunk for almost 40 years and only once when my friend pushed me from was it 3 or 5m I almost didn't find the surface but then remembered that I will float up so that gave me the direction. If you aint a good swimmer then you should not swim while drunk becuase you become even worse but someone with a brain understanding water it aint dangerous. Most that drown during midsummer is drunk people using a boat(most of them, one year a bunch drove like 30 knots into a concrete pier the guy at the front being ready to jump on land with the rope) or very drunk people falling into the water already having problems walking on land.
So yes they both are dangerous things even when you know what you are doing but so is crossing the road!

Some people drown when they get a cramp in water, I stretch because when you are 100m+ out its kinda hard to swim back, just learn to float and move like a bobber in the waves. You go under but you float so you will come back up. You should always respect the sea and never in my life have I driven a boat drunk or been in one if the driver is drunk. There is a huge difference in going for a swim drunk and falling into the water drunk. You do notice your condition and how faar out you can go from the shore. Sauna, beer, sausage and swimming is a must on midsummer but drivin a boat drunk aint.
So still most that can swim and drown do it because they suddenly ended up in the water when drunk, some die before hitting the water like the ones that drove sober too fast under a bridge not understanding that waves exist(was a experienced driver that forgot everything sober)or they had some kind of health problem from a cramp to heart issue or even lung issue.

To speak Russian is not common as has been mentioned already. The language people speak most after Finnish and English is Swedish. Almost everybody should speak it, because it's compulsory to study it at school (though in reality, people often speak it very badly if at all). That compulsion is interesting because nobody seems to know why. Of course, there are all kinds of official explanations and popular beliefs, but none of them really make sense. And the bottom line is that it's stupid to learn another small language which is already furthermore spoken as a mother tongue by more than 200 000 Finns. It's hard to come up with a more useless subject. My humble guess is that the main reason is that many of the wealthiest people in this country have Swedish as their first language and they identify often as the Finland's Swedes. There has always been the risk that they move abroad with their money. The state tries to assure them that Finland is their home, too, and their language is considered highly important.
