@@FrenchViking466 I guess many of us are, also curious to get to know different people and cultures. Ours is a pretty remote country, and foreigners are somewhat out of the ordinary here, especially in the more rural areas. So often we can seem awkwardly quiet, shy, or sulking, at first at least. But wait 'til you get to know us, or offer us some booze and it's a different story, hehe. But yes, good people are always welcome, especially if they love and respect nature, and want to participate in our small country.

Good treatment for mosquito bites is the common Plantago major's (finnish: Piharatamo) leaves. You take a leaf and rub it between your fingers or hands until it becomes darker green and mildly more stickier. Then just put the leaf on top of the bite and it should work in few seconds taking the itch away and helping it heal faster. You can find those in any common yard as it likes to grow on grass and easy to recognize because of its big leaves that hug the ground. It also works very well on stinging nettle's stings as those he will run into when spring comes. I have known this from a small kid and its still surprising when I tell someone to do it and they don't know about it at all.

It happens again when I go to another region in the country. Apparently, there are different kinds of mosquitoes (and no, I don't mean gnats. That's a different creature).

Swedish is a national language mainly on paper, but in reality, you will get by much better in English. Swedish is widely spoken only on very specific areas, typically some small municipalities on the West coast. A typical, average Finn doesn't really understand Swedish, because there is no need to. But he/she typically will understand English to some extent.

    • @jaakkoohable
      @jaakkoohable 4 месяца назад +2

This is indeed true, at least from the viewpoint of this eteläsavolainen who did an RV trip to the west coast a few years back with my family. We planned to stay the night at a quaint little campground in a small village along the coastline, and I had to break out the Swedish I had learned in school some 25 years ago, as we quickly found that the nice lady that I asked driving instructions from, as well as the campground host, only spoke Swedish. They were very welcoming and hospitable, and the small wayside campground by the sea was amazing, so it was a nice experience. It did feel a bit like being abroad for this family from Eastern Finland, where no-one speaks Swedish. Even the street names aren't given Swedish names, which is typical for many other areas in Finland.

The average Finn understands Swedish only if he has to, and he will, because every school child learns the other domestic language . Well, there are some towns too with Swedish majority speakers. Swedish language is the tie to the Nordic community whether we like it or not.

I love to see, that you have find your calling in Life and that you do not pursuit the typical "more money - bigger Car - bigger and more expensive house - holidays in exotic and expensive places - high valued Job Role" thinking they will get you happier and that other people would respect them more - it's a Rat's Race! Instead you enjoy every second and every physical task needed to be done and also take joy in learning how to do them. That's the way most people in Finland use to live, but nowadays it's running after money and wealth. Sire, you and your wife have figured out what is the meaning of Life - KUDOS! Even though I do not personally know you, I am proud of you two! (oh yeah, I'm a Finn and I love your English pronunciation, it brings back memories of how most people spoke in England, nowadays most speak with more ugly dialect or way!) Keep on following the path you have found, it clearly makes you a rare happy human :)

I love that Mossy is beneath the White-thorn tree. That video is where I found your channel. I love myth and lore and I'm disappointed that those videos were not more popular because you are a wonderful storyteller. ❤Love the sweater (jumper) and Mossy calendar. Best wishes to you, Angela, & Juno (Juneau?). Love the end song, it's perfect.

I really enjoyed your videos telling the folklore stories, I am surprised they weren't popular. I will be 61 this year, time flies. My husband's saying to me when I was down about a patient dying was, 'life is terminal we are all dying one day at a time.' Although, he is correct, mine is I have to live until I can't. Glass 1/2 full or 1/2 empty I suppose.

Firstly, I adore your doggy Christmas sweater! My best friend has had 7 Border Collies throughout her life, and they are something special. Your philosophy resonated with me when I watched one of your early videos. I sometimes wonder if there is a type of genetic memory for things like farming and love of the land. One of each set of grandparents grew up on a farm, while the other two were city dwellers. I took a chance and purchased an additional lot next to my suburban home (an older, semi-rural area until recently). I love having the space. Since I retired, many people tell me I should travel, or take up some trendy sport or hobby, when I all I really want to do is fix up my old house and create a beautiful garden where I can grow food and flowers, and enjoy a refuge from the stress of the modern world. I would definitely enjoy watching some storytelling videos featuring legends of Finland, but I have to admit the Irish tale holds a special place in my heart. Cheers!

I didn't know that Moss died last spring. He was such a great dog and will never be forgotten. I'm quite sure he will make his way to the fairyworld🙏We all must move forward and things change in our life. Now you are a dad and your responsibilities have changed. A new country is a perfect start and i'm so excited to watch your new videos to come.

I recognize your house/"know where your postbox lives" in the nicest way possible. Language can be a sore question here but immigrants usually get a free pass. Swedish shares plenty of words and grammatical constructions with both English and German and both of you could learn it by mistake if you hear enough of it. There's quite a strong agrarian identity on the Island so I think you will fit right in. No pressure and best of luck.

Thanks for another lovely update- have been watching for years, remember Moss as a puppy and your journey transforming you place- all those heaps of trash you dug up and lugged away, mushroom hunting in the forest, all of it, and I cried when I heard of your losing Moss. Also wondered about the song, but your voice is so distinct and have listened to it for so long that I realized it was you. Greetings from NY and WV in the usa, my mother was a tough old Viking who died here at 100, my father a lifelong love and admiration for Sibelius and Finland- he volunteered to bring over, oversee the assembly and test fly Brewster fighter planes that were given to Finland by the USA. Joppa Karhunnen was his lifelong friend, he taught them to fly the Brewsters against the Russians, and they were wonderful, intuitive and fearless pilots.

Nice video looking forward to seeing Finnish food culture from the garden. Would recommend cleaning and sorting the fishing gear in the shed and looking into Finnish food culture related to smoking fish. Have seen some cool mini sheds deployed for purely this purpose and know some culinary experts you can connect with around Turku if smoking 🐟🐠🐟 tickles the pallet...and yes sometimes us Finns can sound rude and super direct... IV been kicked out from bars in Europe doing simple things like: could I please have a pint of your finest ale sir translated directly to Finnish: Olut 🍺😂 with optional kiitos

Hello! I think with your ambitions and goals in mind, you've moved to absolutely to the right country. As you probably know and been noted many many times, we Finnish are worker nation. We work hard for our living and our vacation times we work even harder (liberating stuff at our summer cabins, yards etc.) And living of the land is a national trait that everyone has. Even in high density cities where people live in apartment buildings, we still get the urge to grow something: herbs, cherry tomatoes, chilies etc. (hopefully not cannabis like my upstairs neighbor LOL).
Personally, I think I was on the 6th grade in elementary school when my friend and me decided that we're gonna spend a week in the forest, and we did. We had no food or anything with us but we already had the knowledge back then how to live in the wilds so that was a no problem for us. Returned back to home well fed and happy after a week. :D (just a reminder story how early we can start living in the wilds).
I hope that you will enjoy (sometimes anger gets shit done tho) the labour and challenges that face you here but it's definitely possible. Love seeing your updates about your life and challenges, keep up the good spirits and work! 😊PS: Oh and I cannot wait for you to experience the early spring/summer mornings here, that is something special!

On a side note, I loved your whimsical folklore videos! Maybe trolls live on your property! Perhaps you could post a permanent note at the top of the comments about your song at the end. Unending questions, advice, and nosiness is the price you pay for letting us all see you the way you live. 🤣The Finns sound like nice people and I hope you try hard to learn the language, as it's the right thing to do. Hi there, you two! Regarding bubonic mosquito bites: I'm an errant Brit as well, and moved to Korea almost 20 years ago. Those first few months were terrible for mozzy bites, they came up like huge welts, and itched like crazy; but in time your body will adapt to it. After almost 9 years in Korea, I moved to southern India, where the mozzy bites continue to this day. I barely notice them now. May the Force be with you.

I actually see your move to Finland as a huge step forward, all the experience you gained in Ireland, will stand you in good stead in your new home. I feel you grew a lot, and that enabled you to go into a relationship with Angela and to add your precious Juno to the mix. How can anyone see that as a backward step? Do you choose to not use insect repellent because you dislike the chemicals? I too LOVE both the calendar and the folklore series, can’t understand why others don’t. I feel like crying when I see your video. I grew up in the 50´ in the shadow of the war with the Soviet Union and in the shadow of rich Sweden. We were the paupers of the Nordic countries. looked down upon especially by the Swedes. Who would like to move to Finland??? No one. And now we are just as rich and wanted as the rest of the Nordic countries. I am so proud and I am so happy that we are wanted... Finnish is for sure the hardest language in the world, but it is possible to learn because it is so logical. And when you know Finnish you can be proud! I am myself a Swedish speaker so I know what I am talking about.

Few Germans can hide their German accent, but hers is almost undetectable when speaking English, and for the few Finnish words we heard, it is clear that she is doing well at the pronunciation and accent. However, her beloved husband still has some work to do in that department! :-) Nevertheless, the healthy, outdoor lifestyle clearly keeps him looking young!

I think you've picked the right country. Finland has an attitude of "do it yourself unless you legally can't" - I've learned so much about plumbing, electrics, car maintenance, and carpentry since I moved here from the UK. And although the Finns may be somewhat dour and uncommunicative, they certainly perk up and start talking when you ask them for advice on maintenance work.

Interesting Video - I was born in England - with Irish parents - I felt exactly the same - but the opposite - I lived in the UK for decades - but I always felt like an Irishman living in another country - you never quite fit in - even with a solid London/Cockney accent! Nurture vs Nature - so many different twists! It's truly amazing
