In addition to wearing a helmet, several other tips from my years cycling in Canada: 1: when it's REALLY cold, don't cycle. You might be warm but your daughter might freeze. In Canada, parents cross country skiing and hot, had kids in the pulk who got frostbite. 2. Don't cycle at a speed where you sweat. If you need to fix a flat tyre, you will get very cold. 3. Make sure the clear plastic screen on the trailer is down. Your daughter doesn't need gravel flying up in her face ! 4. Always use long mudguards. You don't want a gravelly bottom 😁 5. Screws in your tyres gives massive grip in snow & ice. 6. In very cold weather, put a pair of socks down your codpiece. Frozen gooseberries aren't a good thing. 7. Store the battery indoors. Happy trails 👍🏻
Just to add to 5. You don't need to resort to DIY solutions like that in Finland. Studded bike tires are readily available and similar in price to regular ones.
"Pulk" originates from the Finnish word "pulkka." Interestingly, in Finnish, "pulkka" refers to a sled meant for downhill use. The sled pulled behind while skiing is called "ahkio".
Yes the coMent about childdren not moving thus being cold is point on. Especially small ones in suits like starfish. Bette a ’sleepingbag’ setup where arms and legs are with the body
I was wondering about studded tires as well, but with tires that wide and gnarly (and likely running at a relatively low pressure), and with MB's cycling experience, I think it's probably easy to get a feel for how safe/hazardous it is. There are likely some local cyclists to touch base with as well.
The roads seem fairly straight, with few major curves. The minimal traffic is also a real plus - I'd be most nervous when passing cars could reduce 'maneuvering options'.
Good point about making sure your child stays warm! It could be that the bike isn't used that much for pre-school runs in the dead of winter, but that still leaves a good 8 months of useful service, and potentially a full 12 months for grocery runs. Just the enjoyment makes it an attractive option for both, when feasible. You can imagine going into town to pick up a few things, just for the fun of it.
When the temperature is well below freezing even the ice has friction. What comes to babies and cold, well, Finns put babies for a nap outside often even when during winter. It's a matter of proper clothing too, but of course there's limits. The southern archipelago is a mild area compared to the rest of the country so these extremes are rarely exceeded there.
The go-pro HAS captured the beauty of the landscape. Not being familiar with Finland--I hope you will occasionally take us out and about in your new country, in all seasons. I really enjoyed this little bike journey, and getting a peek at the lovely countryside. Would love to see more! Thank you ♥

Homeschooling is very rare in Finland, since our school system is so fair to everyone. Basic education is very high quality here.
Well... It depends. We got shit schools. Small regional school do often suffer from lack of funding and lack of... well kids... but being close to a big city allows for broader range of education opportunities. Hell when I was in Lukio we had people come from far as Salo to Turku, because we had a specialist school. They took the train to downtown and jumped on a bus, it was like just an hour. They were the only one who reliably had all the school work done, because they did it in the train.
I think they mentioned that Angela is doing a residency in TYKS; I don't know if Salo trains station has park-and-ride, but it would be really convinient since trains stop in Kupittaa. PLenty of people come from Salo region to Kupittaa commuting with a train.

Make sure to be seen by the cars, use reflective gear, lights and a harness - aiming at the look of a cycling Christmas tree 😂 better safe than sorry, you know!
And keep sn steady eye at the thermometer- when it’s close to 0 C it’s very slippery and water on ice is a “stay at home” weather. Survived a lot of winters in the Swedish countryside on a small moped so I’ve had my share of accidents and,of course, I’ve learned from them;)

When there is ice on road, just use tires with spikes. It´s not different than in summer when you have proper gear. It doesn´t mean you need to be in jail. There is no bad weather, only wrong clothes etc.
High vis does nothing against cars. It is good for court, but does not do anything in practice.

I got an electric bike when I had a commute of 12 km during one winter and the public transportation would have taken about an hour. A bit over 30 minutes on my bike was much better option, even though it was a cheap model with 250W engine and low-capacity battery. I just took my charger to work and charged the battery there. One of my best purchases ever.

Freezing temperatures treat your body completely differently depending on other weather conditions, so one should always take care and not just stare at the numbers.
As a side note, I also cycle all the everyday transport I need to do as I don't own a car or a license. The finnish late winter road truly is no joke.
yes, perfect weather is rare-ish. For me in Estonia, that might be 1x in 2 weeks?
I live on the coast of Helsinki and it's always windy. -15°C feels a lot colder here than -30°C in eastern Finland. But on the other hand it's bearable in the summer and there is zero mosquitos compared to the millions in Lappeenranta.

Thanks for the journey. I'm about to turn 80 and live in New Zealand. My maternal grandfather was born on the island of Vanoxa in the Kimitoon archipelago and we took a ferry from Dalsbruk. Admittedly we visited in August but I can imagine well the roads you travelled. I envy you the opportunity to live in South West Finland. Enjoy.
i'm from rural finland, and one of my fears is a head-on collision with a self-styled rally driver on a narrow country road. there's hardly any traffic, yeah, but that brings out the daredevils. had a couple of close calls in my time with gas sneakers drifting around road bends right in front of me. stay safe!
Indeed, and those archipelago roads are particularly unsafe in summertime, as drivers rush to the ferries. They dare to overspeed, because in case a police patrol comes to one of those islands by ferry, it is reported within seconds on local social media groups.
you can hear rally drivers coming in enough time to get off the road when you are cycling with out headphones in your ears.
I agree. I wouldn't dare to walk or cycle in rural Finland and even less with my daughter. I have been living almost always in central Helsinki and here drivers respect at least pedestrians. When I moved to Lappeenranta and tried to walk to the center with my dog we almost died. I had to wrestle my dog into 1 metre of snow when cars were driving just centimeters from us at 100km/h. I have never in my life been so scared and after that I understood why everyone came with a car to the dog park. Moved back to Helsinki and got rid of my car. I didn't hate drivers before, but after living in Lappeenranta and being forced to use one on every trip I started to hate them and their cars. If I ever see an american pickup truck here and happen to have a takeaway coffee, It's going to hit the windshield. Those things are just designed to murder pedestrians.

I ride most weekdays in Canada. My cut off is -20c. I usually wear a buff around my neck , that if I get really cold can pull over my mouth and nose. I also wear special cycle hat under my helmet. Have happy and safe rides. ❤

Whenever you find the time, you should take a winter trip to Oulu just to cycle and see how a city can design its infrastructure for bikes even with near Arctic climate.

No way. This channel was recommended to me during my visit to Galway and now you are living near my home town! And my mom is a preschool teacher in that exact preschool.
The bike ride really shows the beauty of the landscape, great job on capturing it! Also reminds me a little of all the stories about "how our parents used to get to school" which is a common joke here in Finland! Definitely cool approach to replace a car with an ebike.
Few tips: You can try avanto (hole in the ice) in Kokkila during winter if you're into that. There's also a free to use ice rink at the local school. With that bike you may also want to check out the national park at Teijo which offers some great bike trails and "laavu" rest stops.
During summer there is live music during weekends at Lossiranta next to the ferry (our family bar). Also lot of small places around the island that open for the summer. Great place to explore!

I lived my childhood in Kokkila and youth in Vartsala,, and oh boy this brought nostalgia to my heart! It's an absolutely beautiful place to grow up and the memories of me cycling those same roads as a child to go swimming, oh man. Hope that Juno gets all the same experiences in her life and learns to love that place as much.

I don't own a car, I ride my e bike to work and back (18km) every day and around the year. I save a lot of money this way and if I need to go further I'll just take a train. Studded tires are great for riding on ice and they are pretty simple to switch, at least in my bike. If there's rain or snow I use ski goggles, super useful since I also wear glasses lol. Great video!

Also motocross glasses are good for winter biking when it's snowing. Without glasses, snow hitting your eyes gets quite uncomfortable!

That was a really cool video. Your ability to adapt is just remarkable. I am often turned off by the sponsored content on RUclips, but that was SO creative. Looks like the best e-bike on the market ... definitely want to click and explore. I was going to buy an e-car, but WAIT ... why ? Just buy a bike and the trailor and set a trend to the grocery store. I am nearing retirement and time to show those kids a thing or two ? Great food for thought. All the best !

I'm in southern Ontario Canada and -14 is too cold for me😂. Not all Canadians enjoy the cold 🥶 though a sunny day like yours in this video makes it much more tolerable and sometimes quite enjoyable and beautiful. Loved going on the ride with you ... amazing!!
Hello! I moved to Finland almost 2 years ago. Using a bike daily and not owning a car. Something you might be happy to know is that it is always a pleasure to ride in Finland. But also, be very careful to inspect your brakes. Disk brakes and their pads will tend to absorb some of the dirt from the slushy snow, especially on this type of weather we currently have (flirting around both sides of 0°C). They can start squealing and can come to not brake at all when they get a bit hot once they have absorbed some of it. Some techniques such as sandpaper and acetone for removing the glazed parts of both the disks and the pads work quite decently. But after cycling years in Paris, even under the rain, I discovered this issue this winter. The dirty snow caries much more of these oils and particles.
Otherwise, I discovered you when you announced moving to Finland, and I am hooked. I like your way of thinking, telling your stories and can’t wait to see more of this project!

You were spot on with your observation of keeping a good cadence when pedaling! 👌
One of the most common mistakes made by ebike beginners is setting the assist to max and the gear into a high (hard) gear and then crusing along with a very low cadence, letting the motor do the work. The problem is, that the high gear uses the smallest cogs (of the cog cassette in the rear) and this wears out the small cogs and the chain in no time. The small cogs have only very few teeth. For the smallest, only three or four teeth are in loaded contact with the chain at any given time. If you were to constantly put a lot of load on just those few teeth by doing low cadence + high assist + high gear, they‘d be worn down soon. And then you get chain slips (and usually need a new cassette of cogs). Better to reserves those high gears for when you go fast anyway (i.e. down hill). But ride with a middle gear and a higher cadence on flats, and match the gear to that, just like you noticed yourself.

Hi there. Word to the wise for essentially Arctic living: I hope you have a plan to keep your daughter warm in the wee trailer. Children loose body heat much more quickly and she will not be moving in there to keep warm. I live in Canada and I know winter all too well. Better to prevent than try to remedy a horrible accident. A source of heat is essential. A snowsuit won't be enough.

Please wear a helmet 😮. Wool will not protect your brain if you fall. And as a person who regularly bikes in snow I can tell you, you will fall eventually. Also your daughter should also wear a helmet in the trailer. I point this out with the best intention at hart.
Couldn’t agree more. Friend recently came off bike and his helmet was only thing between him and death/serious injury.
Thankfully he mentions getting helmets in the end.

Such an informative video on how you have solved your essential travel necessities in a way that obviously happily satisfies you. My self an electric biker now for about ten years understand your wise choice. Bicycles electric or not are the best. Wait until spring, then summer it will be even more enjoyable. Great video and very nice bike! Late winter in finland is beautiful time, it's almost like you are waking up from hibernation when you feel the warmth of sun after long cold winter. And the summer is just so much more enjoyable :D
If you're planning to ride a bike during late winter or spring, I'd definitely recommend getting studded tire to at least front wheel. Something like Schwalbe Al Mighty 26x4,8" should be pretty good, though a bit expensive. That thing has 328 studs per tire! Running on wet ice without studs will be going to be an adventure... The real test for traction is when it's +1..+2 °C for a day or two after long freeze. Any tire will have acceptable traction when it's -5 °C or colder.

Hallo there. I live in a cold climate too. And I'd recommend, instead of thick hats, go for hoods, whatever overcoats, ets. you should choose but with hoods. With, in that case, a way lighter hat on you will still have the fool measure of the sense of space around you and can hear all the small but vital sounds of your immediate environment. And your head could still breath.

Kokkila is real nice in the summer. Great place to live, used to spend some time there and swim at the dock as a kid. Well winter as well, should be a public sauna there still.

What a fit man you're going to be, not that you weren't already, but whew! Despite it being a smooth ride with the electric assistance, you will live to a 100 at this rate. Even light exercise is powerful!
Great video! I got my e-bike few months ago, I would definately recommend studded tires or at least front tire. You get a good grip without studs when its -14 but around 0 it can be really slippery on those rural roads. Water on ice is the most dangerous thing...

Great video! My partner and I enjoy your videos very much and we’re looking forward to more to come. As an avid cyclist myself I was very excited to see a video about cycling in Finland, in the winter. I cycle to and from work every day here in Helsinki/ Espoo and it is such a contrast to what my life was like in the US. I wanted to make a suggestion about tires. I don’t have a fat tire bicycle so I’m not sure how stable they actually are but may I suggest that you look into studded tires. I use my 2.1 inch studded tires on my mountain bike and I’m quite impressed with how confident I feel on my bike. Keep it up and I look forward to the next video.

Everyone who bikes more uses a helmet here in Finland. I use it also for a short 1 kilometer road to shop nearby. It is written in law that you must use it. At first it was for the children and later on to adults. So it is "a must" though polise does check it only when scools begin at August and sometimes again at May. Be aware of that.
I just loved this video, your new location is spectacular, looking forward to seeing it in every season. The bike is fabulous too, I expect you and your daughter will thoroughly enjoy those daily trips to school and back.
I ride a fatbike all the time. At -25c you can still go hour and a half in proper kit, the condensation becomes a problem after that instead of the cold. Because the roads are so flat here, a lot of people cycle to work. School kids ride year around too.

Hahahah I can't believe I'm watching this! I have been thinking about using an electric bike, but live in Michigan, and wasn't sure that was possible, and here's my "friend" Daniel who taught me about permaculture showing me how to ride in the snow. I admit, I had to watch you first take off peaking through my fingers, because when I first rode an electric bike on loose gravel, I wiped out pretty bad. Now I know what to expect when the motor kicks in, and hopefully this bird will fledge too! Great description of what it feels like when the motor kicks in. Hi Daniel, Perhaps check the handlebar alignment. It may be the angle of the GoPro, but i noticed that it is very slightly angled towards the right. Not being completely straight will cause you to make a lot of micro adjustments on the front wheel, which will sap progress and may be a bit tricky in snowy conditions.

In Finnish there is no "black ice" on those roads. That is just ice and snow. We have a special term, polanne, which means like compressed, frozen mixture of snow and ice.
Black ice or "musta jää" in Finnish means thin "black" or basically transparent layer of ice on black asphalt, so that you can't see it. It mostly happens in late autumn, early winter, before there is snow, but the temperatures go below zero long enough to freeze the surface of the road. Mostly it happens in the night, when there iclear skies and some source of humity nearby. So it is common on bridges and roads close to the lake.

Just in case...Here in Finland an electric bike does not have an actual maximum speed, but according to the law, the electric motor can assist pedaling up to a speed of 25 km/h. When this hourly speed is exceeded, the assistance must be switched off. Don't get fines for speeding 😂😊
It can be worse than fines. The e-bike can then be classified as a moped, and as a moped whose traffic insurance has not been paid. I don't know how things are now, but in the past, if you were caught driving a non-insured vehicle in Finland, you had to pay 10 years worth of traffic insurance (liikennevakuutus) in advance.

Hell my suzuki pv was 80cc with top speed of 120kmh :D Rural Finland has different rules, a 6 months could go by and you didn't see a single police car.

I was wondering about this too when looking at their bikes, just to be sure, would you need to get a limiter here or is just flicking the switch off enough? Like if police test the bike and it can go over 25km/h you're fucked right? like when they can test your moped etc.
@@TheLazyFinn Difference is that if you see moped going +50km/h you know it's tuned. But if you see bicycle going +25kmh they have absolutely no idea if he is using motor or muscle. I can cycle 40km/h on my road bike easily.
