I would love to put Dr. Jason Fong and Dr. Longo together for debate their point, it’s so confusing for public…… one say fasting is great, the other says fasting is bad. I guess we the public has to use our own judgment to decide for our own health because we don’t know who to trust !!!
I don't think they disagree that much. Fung says fasting is good for losing weight and diabetes. And Longo seems to be very in favor of long fasts. Like 5 days minimum. It's just that a lot of studies in the last years seem to correlate longevity/less health risks with earlier in the day meals. You can still fast for 16h if you eat earlier. I just don't see how, I hate eating too early and then being in like a state of "eating" for the rest of the day. Much easier time to just not eat early, have a coffe and enjoy food way more in the evening. Going to bed on a completely empty stomach after like 8h fasting feels awful to me.
@@Bankai90 I totally agreed with you, it's much easier to fast in the morning especially i do my physical training in the morning with empty stomach rather then busy digesting the food, and have no problem to finished my dinner by 7pm which it really worked for my daily schedule. I never tried 5 days fast and i don't think i will ever get to that point, however, all the experts has their reasons and theories,but in the end we have to decide what fit in our life stye, Genetic background, health conditions ...........one doesn't fit for all ! @@michellechang2538 I actually did a 11 day fast. He mentions it here with sth. along the lines of "show me just one way to get brainpower up as with a fast" and that is soo true. Going over 3-4 days fasted is like a almost chronic state of good cocaine dose xD. The mental clarity is sth. you'd NEVER feel on a day to day basis, No matter how much sleep or how clean your diet is. Agree with the rest you said tho, feel the same :D
I found it weird, not only because there are dozens of researchers pointing out to the benefit of fasting (skipping breakfast) but specially for the fact that it can be any breakfast, sugary, loaded with carbs etc , still would be better than skipping breakfast, that sounds really odd
I have never been much of a breakfast eater. I like my coffee, with cream and sweetener (2 drops Now stevia). But I have had a weight problem since puberty. 🤷♀️ When I intermittent fast, I find it easy to go til afternoon. I have recently started to try and fast from 3pm. Much harder for me. And once I eat in the am, I start becoming food focused for the rest of the day. 😞
I agree. I think the evidence on skipping breakfast being an issue isn't that strong compared to Satchin Panda's work on eating in a shorter window. I think Dr. Longo goes to protocols that have zero negative associations, which in a way is good, he's not slinging snake oil.
There is a huge amount of literature about the benefits of fasting by practitioners who have supervised thousands of fasts. Some examples: books by Herbert M Shelton DC, Dr John Tilden MD, Paul Bragg, Isaak Jennings MD and many more
I've seen those studies that eating earlier is beneficial. I just don't understand why I feel so much better skipping early and eating late. I try again and again to eat in the morning, but I always feel worse due to it.
I think what Longo, Sinclair and others are saying is the Intermittent Fasting (not eating for 12-16 hrs/day) helps the body go into Autophagy, which has been found helpful to the body. Just as our ancestors undoubtedly did no eat every 3, 4, 5 hrs/day. Out modern way of eating greatly contributes to high sugar levels, leading to diabetes and cardiovascular disease (the main causes of early death today).
@@victoriap4335 don't know if u listened to Longo but he seems to be pretty much against the idea to call any fasts under 70h even "fasting". He also seems to belive that fasts under 3-5days likely don't even raise autophagy or any benefits at all. He's probably on the agreement with Rhonda Patrick that fasting for like 13h is great, anything more won't benefit you all that much. While prolonged fasting (5days+) is what you should strive for for benefits. All latest studies(over last 3-5years) seem to not be able to find any major benefits from time restricted eating, those seem to come mainly from a kcal deficit. While simultaniously studies show adverse effects when we start consuming foods later in the day. Even during short eating windows. People like to treat weight loss as a benefit, but it's not a health marker these people are looking for. That's why they seem to belive high protein and low feeding window is kinda like cocaine. Effective for weightloss, sadly not effective for health according to the data.
Same here. Personally I really don’t care about these studies because I feel soo much better and my body like it when I skip breakfast. I am more of a lunch and dinner person. I have tried both ways, skipping dinner and eating early breakfast and lunch. It’s much more difficult for me to actually fast at afternoon. But the other way around, my body just loves it, I can even eat foods which coused bloating and gas before, now skipping breakfast or sometimes eating it more later , I can also eat these foods. And I feel fine and no bloating. I found this guest very odd anyway. 🙄
@@birgitk6518 I have bloating when I eat vegetables and apples, but I can't live with both, breakfast is not an option for me, as I can't eat and don't have appetite, when I push myself to hv a BF I feel lethargic as well as I can't get satisfied and pass my dinner, Dinner is an important to me, because I feel hungry after 17 o'clock! I guess I have medical issue with bacterial overgrowth but I refuse to take antibiotics! Thanks for share.
So skipping breakfast may not be the best idea after all and the 16/8 as well as other fasting protocols may even be seriously dangerous to your health. So Jason Fung is wrong and Valter Longo is right? Or vice versa now I'm really confused.
I never ever skip breakfast always have a good healthy breakfast and then I eat my last meal around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon. I also follow Langos fasting mimicking diet once every couple months
He is vague! Why is skipping breakfast dangerous? He doesn’t really explain. He’s just saying it’s dangerous. He recommends a 12 hour fast which isn’t a fast, (most people already do that while sleeping)
I like to eat when I wake up but that might be after a 4 day fast. I do need to master refeeding cause I don’t do that right. I’m only 75 so I’ll catch on to it.
One centenarian couple in one of the documentaries about centenarians in Italy shared their daily routine and they have their first meal at noon and last meal at 6. If you get up not too early (say 9) have a meal at noon is not much different from having a breakfast in the morning at 8 or 9 as someone gets up early (say 6). His has been repeating gallstone as one of the bad things for not having breakfast. Why these two situations would be very different? What he has been repeating in various interviews about how bad it is not having breakfast doesn't make a lot of sense if you think about individual situations such as how early you get up and how late you go to bed. In this video: "They have lunch at 12 in the morning and dinner at 5 in the evening every time like that since 64 years ago". I don't know where you found this guy, but his research is contrary to most others in the field. I believe longevity has more to do with genetics than anything else. I have done intermittent fasting for over 3 years and my found my numbers to be great and my weight to be balanced.
"this guy" 🤣😅😂. Valter Longo IS the field of longevity. It is well known that skipping dinner instead of breakfast yields better results. That doesn't mean skipping breakfast is without benefit. For most people skipping breakfast works better due for cultural/social reasons. But skipping dinner is better. Stop listening to "Dr" Berg and maybe learn a little from actual scientists in the field.
IF may work for someones but for me it was a total disaster. I ve never had weight problems before but after stopping it (because it messed up with my digestion and hormones) I couldn t return to my normal weight. So if you are a healty, young woman proceed with caution. My eating window is now 8am to 6/6.30pm and works great for me.
Isn't breakfast just breaking a fast? So why would "skipping breakfast" be bad? You just start eating when you're hungry. A lot of people, myself included, don't feel hungry when we wake up. My first meal of the day might be as late as 5pm, but usually between 2 and 3pm. (just not hungry and busy), then I eat a big high fat carnivore meal, or two medium sized carnivore meals. I'm good. I feel good to just eat when I'm hungry. I dont believe in "brekfast" but breaking a fast I believe you can do at any point in your day. Telling people "skipping breakfast is bad", is very dangerous. Imo.
Could be related to circadian rhythm? I know there’s some research saying it’s better to eat earlier in the day rather than later. But I’d prefer it to not matter too. I naturally am not hungry in the morning and prefer to eat more later in the day when I’ve done everything and can relax, so intermittent fasting with skipping breakfast makes the most sense for me and I love it.
@@rizumu1 same here. I'm not a morning person. I start feeling hungry at about 2pm average so I just go with it - but I don't eat at night. I don't eat past 8. Its just what works for me 🤷🏾♀️
Actually when you look at todays death rates. SAD is far from being the worst diets eaten. Asia, or rather a lot of Hindiusm countries do over 3x as bad as the SAD diet atm. Overall it seems that the biggest issue seems to be using cheap seed oils and wheat/sugar.
Dr Valter Longo disappoints people who love to hear good news about their bad habits. There are too many on the internet that do tell people good news about their bad habits to the detriment of those who believe them.
Adding suger to your coffee is a bad habit, eating grains/beans that have toxins that are deleterious to humans is a bad habit. This guy just echos the American heart foundation mantra that has lead to the cardiovascular disease epidemic the only difference is he has added a Ramadan fast into the mix.
The evidence clearly states that skipping breakfast IS beneficial for you. Do you think humans had something to eat everytime they woke up back in the days? do you even think they had lunch ? no. Your body is used to it and even things like Autophagy only kick in strong when fasting.
I think at the end of the doing what works for your body is best. Some people do fine skipping breakfast and some don’t. You just have to listen to your body. If you feel fatigued, and experience low blood sugar then break your fast. Over time fasting is supposed to make you feel energized and if your body is overwhelmed you might not see the benefits.
I think is a very balance interview, Dr. Longo is a very smart man. He's approach is about balance.if I have a late dinner full of protein and fat, I sleep bad and I'm not hungry in the morning. So a balance dinner before 8 o'clock works. The 5 days fasting mimicking diet change me in positive way.my tipe 2 and high cholesterol go down to almost normal.

Interesting how what he says counters so many other experts in this field. He also gives off the vibe that he's not someone that can be trusted to tell the truth. Similar vibe to the mainstream media, the governments of the world, etc

I think he does that intentionally to provoke a different view on fasting. Been following Longo for several years now. He seemed to be very upset about the notion to call 16-48h without food "fasting". He seems to belive that's "time restricted eating", since actual fasting (5days+) seems to give tremendous body benefits. Yet 16h-22h doesn't seem to do that in such a manner at all. So maybe it's a way to stirr up that, hey IF isn't as great as people want you belive. Since it's not really fasting. I did hang out for awhile in very dark forums online with very sick people, and usually people who fasted under 6days never seemed to benefit from anything. While almost everybody who went above 6 days(and some way longer), seemed to always get sth out of it. But still, how he talks here is quite shady. Dodging stuff left and right
All his work is evidence based with meta studies. If you read his book he is very cautious and will not present anything without evidence as he says you rightly would loose credibility and all the years of research would be discarded.
According to 5000 yrs old ayurveda one should eat when sunrises and end at sunset so basically its 12 to 13 hrs and one should not drink too much water Proud to be indian
Intermittent fasting is not for everybody. After hearing about IF back in 2017 I've tried it (14/10) for over 6 months. I am a breakfast eater but somehow it was very easy for me not to eat until 1 pm. In the beginning I felt great but after a while I've started facing digestion problems and my digestion before was always perfect ....like a Swiss watch. Then I've suffered a hormonal imbalance. Trying to understand what the issue was, I've stopped IF. My digestion was working properly again, my hormones balanced but I've gained weight without changing anything to my diet. And I was never have problems with gaining weight. It was that 1.5 to 2 kg that I couldn't lose. So if you are a healthy, slim, young woman with a fast metabolism like mine BE AWARE. Now a day I eat within a 10-hour window. I have breakfast at 8am and an early dinner at 6pm and feeling great. I've also incorporated FMD (twice a year) in my life. But my metabolism is still slower now than it was before IF. Dr. Longo is one of few scientist that I admire the most (together with Dr. Satchin Panda, Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Guido Kroemer and Dr. William Li).
Hi, this was very eye opening. Now I am the one who has been on a yoyo lifestyle unfortunately. I am 60 yo, I have arthritis, osteoporosis, no thyroid. I have tried IF but then hit a plateau last year and my weight went up 10 kg. Is the Fasting mimicking diet something I could look into? Thank you.

I have his book The Longevity Diet and also was on the Prolon diet of his. Then went full on keto for a bit - now back to Intermittent Fasting. Sometimes it is OMD. I would love to know if there is a similar goat cheese like in Sardinia - the blue zone. Found this: Drink goat’s milk. A glass of goats milk contains components that might help protect against inflammatory diseases of aging such as heart disease and Alzheimer’s. Drink a glass or two of red wine daily. Sardinians drink wine moderately. Cannonau wine has two or three times the level of artery-scrubbing flavonoids as other wines. Moderate wine consumption may help explain the lower levels of stress among men.
I couldn't listen to this guy long. His info is so contradictory to what DrFung recommends who has a practice and sees first hand results of the patients he has helped heal diabetes in his clinic. I wish you would get guests on to debate their theories and findings. Why does it matter if you eat in the morning. Isn't breakfast breaking a fast.

I think that yes, 16/8 could be fine, if you eat early. Say you have breakfast at 8, that means your last meal would be 4 in the afternoon. Or you could enlarge your eating window just a bit to 14/10: breakfast at 8, dinner at 6 in the afternoon. That's still time restrictive eating - and it makes more use of knowledge of what the body does with food at different times of the day. Calories late in the day, goes straight to the fat stores. Calories in the morning get used for activity.
Why is it so confusing when people want to be healthier and have been baffled by two or more scientists saying different types of things all together. I started eating twice a day breakfast and dinner, and after 7 pm, I don't eat anything. I do resistant training, so I need that protein and energy . I have my first meal around 11am and then 5pm . Later I go to the gym for 1.5 hours and feel great .
What about autophagy with fasting and extended fasting? What about the dawn effect and why the human body does this? Sugar is highly addictive and ultimately poison in the amounts we injest it in our modern diets. Not to mention that as humans, we didn't get to where we are today, biologically, by having sugar everyday. Leaving this important aspect of it out of the equation negates his "advice" on having 5 grams a day being harmless. Eggs, the complete food, are harmful eaten daily? What? Etc. Etc. With all due respect, his book may be prophetic and his research ground breaking. But the doctor's message here is wishy washy and muddled. Dhru streamlined it as best he could. He appears to be an "everything in moderation" kind of person. Understood now. Not a very useful interview IMHO. No disrespect intended.
By law, according to the USDA, the egg industry “needs to steer clear of words like 'healthy' or 'nutritious. '” For a food to be labeled “healthy” under FDA rules, it has to be low in saturated fat (eggs fail that criteria) and have less than 90mg of cholesterol per serving (even half an egg fails that test).
Interesting when Dr Longo talks about the yo-yo effect of diet at 28:00 being worse than not having done anything at all. Yet ,earlier in the video talks about the summer effect where in a prehistoric time we would have eaten a lot to accumulate fat then to lose the same fat when there was scarcity but in our modern society we no longer have this opportunity. Can anyone explain then the logic?
Meta studies are often wrong. Why? 1. Let's say there are 1000 studies about breakfast. 341 are in favor, 250 neutral and 409 against breakfast. You take the 341 who are in favor of breakfast! Then you write an article: A meta study of 341 studies shows that breakfast is beneficial! 2. By active choosing the participants for a study you can influence very much the study! F.e. you admit only people who like breakfast and have no health issues. You admit only people who do not like breakfast and have health issues. You admit a mix of them. .....Many more possibilities! 3. The qualitity of he study! Gold standard, anecdotal, blind, double cross, time of wash out, placebo group ..... 2. and 3. explain why studies financed from the food industry contradict studies from tax payer financed studies. Same goes with pharma ...
How many calories does Dr Longo recommend per day ? In his book the Longevity Diet is 800 calories per day, but the FMDiet meal for day one is 1,100 calories ( I believe ) ~ anyway that’s confusing. So when you’re not fasting ( or mimicking ) how many calories does he recommend per day ? I ask because he says chronic calorie reduction is unhealthy, and the US government recommends 2K calories per day. So 800 calories per day might be chronic under eating ? I’m not trying to be argumentative but need clarification on this. Ty
Wrong. The FMD is on the First day 1100 cal. and then from day 2 to 5- 800 cal. In his book he recommends on a normaly diet (longevity diet) 1,700 to 1,800 cal. a day for a sedentary woman of normal height (5,4 inches).
Longo recommends 7day waterfast every single month till you're healthy. I wouldn't call others ones that much more extreme xdd. But yea Longo follows the current data very strict. And ppl can't rly accept that XD
By Mr. Longo’s standard, when does our window for breakfast close? Is the breakfast period determined by the clock(like MacDonalds) or measured from the time we wake up. When is the separation between breakfast and Lunch?
If you're not hungry then of course don't eat it. What he's saying is that if you're going to skip a meal as many people who do intermittent fasting do, it's more beneficial to skip the evening meal instead of the morning meal. That being said, your breakfast can be at 11 or 12 etc. If you're not hungry until then.
Or maybe he did it on purpose.. probably the fda is after him since he is so popular.. so he is just playing it safe .. most of his followers are smart and they know that that fasting is extremely beneficial so people will do the fasting anyway!:-)
What do you think Dr. Longo would recommend for people like myself who are allergic to nuts? To just eat seeds, EVOO, and salmon as part of the “healthy” fats?
He is weird ..we can't calculate everything in life with his studies. I know my mother never ate breakfast..she used work in yard cooking ..type of activity through after noon then have lunch ..in India .. people used to do weekly religious fastings ..she is always skinny no over weight..i do fasting now ..I eat couple meals in the evening and I feel good ..I do workout before eating..but moderate workout..and some low intensity runs sometime ...I think. For sure i can say eating breakfast slows me down ..and makes me lazy ..I feel lot better without it .
For him to say that skipping breakfast breakfast and fasting longer than 12 hours is the cause higher mortality and all these chronic illnesses is ridiculous. It’s a biased view based on his observations and whatever these “epidemiological studies” he believes are valid. Also, he doesn’t seem to think quality or content of food matters. Calling people and asking if they have breakfast or not and then what-following their longevity or health issues? It’s very unclear. How is that scientific? It’s like a marketing survey. Personally, I’m not for or against breakfast. In an ideal situation, it may be best to have mid morning meal, then a late afternoon/early evening meal, skip a late dinner or have a light dinner. But I personally do not eat more on days I may not eat that much earlier in the day. In fact, once I get started, I tend to eat more throughout the day. Curious to see his data…he just throws these numbers out of a hat.
His concern about no breakfast is the amount of bile floating around in the gut with no fat to digest. Bile is like battery acid. It's strong and causes damage to the gut that then increases the risk of colon cancer. This is why high fat diets and alcohol are risky for colon cancer. Alcohol digests as a fat and increases bile. He's seen metastudies prove this over and over. I don't eat breakfast right away either. I eat 2.5hrs after waking. I am not hungry prior and just can't. I'm hoping it's close enough.
what about celery juice for breakfast? I take my vitamins with this food. Also, can be lowering temperature of environment to, say 73-75 degree, make impact of fasting more pronouncing?
People associate breakfast with the morning. I hate the idea of waking up in the morning just to eat breakfast only to go back to bed. For me, a normal time of day for breakfast would be around noon time. And then people call it lunch. So by most people's standards I skip breakfast everyday. But I am breaking the fast which is the definition of breakfast. And what is normal breakfast food traditionally, is full of sugar which I avoid totally.
I’m done. Everytime I watch a video on this channel someone has studies to back up something completely different than the “expert” in the last video. All I keep doing is cutting foods out then later re-adding it or buying “superfoods” and none of this is actually getting me anywhere. I think I’ll stick to plants and omega 3’s and stop taking advice from people who don’t have it figured out yet :/
I've done his FMD but I find it weird that anyone should talk about it as a ketogenic diet never of the large amount of carbs in it. There rice flour in the soups! The nut bar is super sweet. What the diet is, is low protein not low carb. And $150 for 5 days is ridiculous. Just fast. It's free. But if you do Prolon, put 1 T of apple cider vinegar in the soups to prevent the explosive headaches from that rice flour. It's their chief complaint... The headaches. You're welcome.
So, I take it, he still thinks fasting is good. But, thinks if u skip a meal, maybe u shouldn't skip breakfast, that is assuming that u aren't eating high carb sugary processed foods for breakfast
The use of mainly fats with less carbs and protein, I assume balanced in some ratio, to mimic fasting state, might work. I'd like to hear from more people who have tried it.
I have tried this a couple of times. Maybe the sudden keto state might stress people a bit because with a high fat mimicking diet one gets into deep ketosis. 5mml but when has the Longo fat mimicking diet, it is slightly more carbs after day one, Keto level hovers around 1.5mml and sometimes not at all, but feeling of stress I found to be less on Longos method
Dr. Longo has a conscience and wants to help people. Pharma doesn't have that filter. All he has to do is look at the experts in virology and listen to what they're discovering regarding the vaccine. I hope that the longevity diet and FMD can mitigate the damage. 15% above normal all cause mortality is huge...
This is so frustrating! Lots of current centenarians did NOT have healthy lifestyles. It seems the primary positive lifestyle effect they experience is never getting significantly overweight, always exercising, always staying engaged with life and having a strong social structure. Even in blue zones the VAST majority of people do not live to be over 90. Why don’t they? They pretty much eat the same diets. We need more information. I’m not convinced that skipping breakfast which is the easiest way to reduce meal frequency, is a dangerous lifestyle choice. Other than the fact that a few centenarians eat breakfast, where is the human data? Scientists are missing something. They are exaggerating the blue zone effect when most people in blue zones don’t live to be 100.
I despise when they use animal studies and compare them to humans. I live science, but I always thought it was ridiculous. Makes zero sense. Also… skipping breakfast works for me. Saved my life. 🤷🏽♀️

i love how calm and smart these men are. Calmly asking and answering, no dogma, no hatespeech, wonderful ! BUT ! At no time did they even MENTION the microbiome, the single most important feature of human health...in relation to fasting, i would say, like walter, need more research, microbes can go into hibernation during times of no food, but ! they live in the intestine where they are at risk of getting pooped out if they start napping ? this is just me being layman and using logic, i have zero science to back this up, BUT microbiome needs attention,thats why i consider breakfast : FOOD FOR MICROBES ! feed the good guys in there, you dont need a meal, you need pektin (eat some applepeels) inulin (cheap supplementusually from chikory root), OMG i will drop the bomb : lactose ! Lactose is the favorite food of sooooo many beneficial microbes, eat some skyr if you fear fat from animals, its like 0.1% fat. So, breakfast for me is skyr, applepeels and a scoop of inulin "sweetened" with cinamon, blend it and gulp it down, yum !!! akkermansia and the entire bifido-family will send you greetings :p ...

I keep coming back to this interview. In a healthy person fasting glucose should not drop too low as fat will be metabolised maintain the levels within the correct parameters. I’ll stick with Jason Fung.

I just don't see how, I hate eating too early and then being in like a state of "eating" for the rest of the day. Much easier time to just not eat early, have a coffe and enjoy food way more in the evening. Going to bed on a completely empty stomach after like 8h fasting feels awful to me.
@@Bankai90 I totally agreed with you, it's much easier to fast in the morning especially i do my physical training in the morning with empty stomach rather then busy digesting the food, and have no problem to finished my dinner by 7pm which it really worked for my daily schedule. I never tried 5 days fast and i don't think i will ever get to that point, however, all the experts has their reasons and theories,but in the end we have to decide what fit in our life stye, Genetic background, health conditions ...........one doesn't fit for all ! Going over 3-4 days fasted is like a almost chronic state of good cocaine dose xD. The mental clarity is sth. you'd NEVER feel on a day to day basis, No matter how much sleep or how clean your diet is.

I found it weird, not only because there are dozens of researchers pointing out to the benefit of fasting (skipping breakfast) but specially for the fact that it can be any breakfast, sugary, loaded with carbs etc , still would be better than skipping breakfast, that sounds really odd

I have never been much of a breakfast eater. I like my coffee, with cream and sweetener (2 drops Now stevia). But I have had a weight problem since puberty. 🤷♀️
When I intermittent fast, I find it easy to go til afternoon. I have recently started to try and fast from 3pm. Much harder for me.
And once I eat in the am, I start becoming food focused for the rest of the day. 😞
I agree. I think the evidence on skipping breakfast being an issue isn't that strong compared to Satchin Panda's work on eating in a shorter window. I think Dr. Longo goes to protocols that have zero negative associations, which in a way is good, he's not slinging snake oil.
We need more studies. IF is new and people will need to be followed for years. Blue zones are a mystery.
There is a huge amount of literature about the benefits of fasting by practitioners who have supervised thousands of fasts. Some examples: books by Herbert M Shelton DC, Dr John Tilden MD, Paul Bragg, Isaak Jennings MD and many more
I've seen those studies that eating earlier is beneficial. I just don't understand why I feel so much better skipping early and eating late. I try again and again to eat in the morning, but I always feel worse due to it.
I think what Longo, Sinclair and others are saying is the Intermittent Fasting (not eating for 12-16 hrs/day) helps the body go into Autophagy, which has been found helpful to the body. Just as our ancestors undoubtedly did no eat every 3, 4, 5 hrs/day. Out modern way of eating greatly contributes to high sugar levels, leading to diabetes and cardiovascular disease (the main causes of early death today).
@@victoriap4335 don't know if u listened to Longo but he seems to be pretty much against the idea to call any fasts under 70h even "fasting". He also seems to belive that fasts under 3-5days likely don't even raise autophagy or any benefits at all. He's probably on the agreement with Rhonda Patrick that fasting for like 13h is great, anything more won't benefit you all that much. While prolonged fasting (5days+) is what you should strive for for benefits.
All latest studies(over last 3-5years) seem to not be able to find any major benefits from time restricted eating, those seem to come mainly from a kcal deficit. While simultaniously studies show adverse effects when we start consuming foods later in the day. Even during short eating windows.
People like to treat weight loss as a benefit, but it's not a health marker these people are looking for. That's why they seem to belive high protein and low feeding window is kinda like cocaine. Effective for weightloss, sadly not effective for health according to the data.

Same here. Personally I really don’t care about these studies because I feel soo much better and my body like it when I skip breakfast. I am more of a lunch and dinner person. I have tried both ways, skipping dinner and eating early breakfast and lunch. It’s much more difficult for me to actually fast at afternoon. But the other way around, my body just loves it, I can even eat foods which coused bloating and gas before, now skipping breakfast or sometimes eating it more later , I can also eat these foods. And I feel fine and no bloating.

One centenarian couple in one of the documentaries about centenarians in Italy shared their daily routine and they have their first meal at noon and last meal at 6. If you get up not too early (say 9) have a meal at noon is not much different from having a breakfast in the morning at 8 or 9 as someone gets up early (say 6). His has been repeating gallstone as one of the bad things for not having breakfast. Why these two situations would be very different? What he has been repeating in various interviews about how bad it is not having breakfast doesn't make a lot of sense if you think about individual situations such as how early you get up and how late you go to bed.
In this video: "They have lunch at 12 in the morning and dinner at 5 in the evening every time like that since 64 years ago". I don't know where you found this guy, but his research is contrary to most others in the field. I believe longevity has more to do with genetics than anything else. I have done intermittent fasting for over 3 years and my found my numbers to be great and my weight to be balanced.

For most people skipping breakfast works better due for cultural/social reasons. But skipping dinner is better. Stop listening to "Dr" Berg and maybe learn a little from actual scientists in the field.

IF may work for someones but for me it was a total disaster. I ve never had weight problems before but after stopping it (because it messed up with my digestion and hormones) I couldn t return to my normal weight. So if you are a healty, young woman proceed with caution. My eating window is now 8am to 6/6.30pm and works great for me.

Isn't breakfast just breaking a fast? So why would "skipping breakfast" be bad? You just start eating when you're hungry. A lot of people, myself included, don't feel hungry when we wake up. My first meal of the day might be as late as 5pm, but usually between 2 and 3pm. (just not hungry and busy), then I eat a big high fat carnivore meal, or two medium sized carnivore meals. I'm good. I feel good to just eat when I'm hungry.
I dont believe in "brekfast" but breaking a fast I believe you can do at any point in your day.

Could be related to circadian rhythm? I know there’s some research saying it’s better to eat earlier in the day rather than later. But I’d prefer it to not matter too. I naturally am not hungry in the morning and prefer to eat more later in the day when I’ve done everything and can relax, so intermittent fasting with skipping breakfast makes the most sense for me and I love it.

Dr Valter Longo disappoints people who love to hear good news about their bad habits. There are too many on the internet that do tell people good news about their bad habits to the detriment of those who believe them.
Adding suger to your coffee is a bad habit, eating grains/beans that have toxins that are deleterious to humans is a bad habit. This guy just echos the American heart foundation mantra that has lead to the cardiovascular disease epidemic the only difference is he has added a Ramadan fast into the mix.
The evidence clearly states that skipping breakfast IS beneficial for you. Do you think humans had something to eat everytime they woke up back in the days? do you even think they had lunch ? no. Your body is used to it and even things like Autophagy only kick in strong when fasting.
I think at the end of the doing what works for your body is best. Some people do fine skipping breakfast and some don’t. You just have to listen to your body. If you feel fatigued, and experience low blood sugar then break your fast. Over time fasting is supposed to make you feel energized and if your body is overwhelmed you might not see the benefits.
I think is a very balance interview, Dr. Longo is a very smart man. He's approach is about balance.if I have a late dinner full of protein and fat, I sleep bad and I'm not hungry in the morning.
So a balance dinner before 8 o'clock works. The 5 days fasting mimicking diet change me in positive way.my tipe 2 and high cholesterol go down to almost normal.

I think he does that intentionally to provoke a different view on fasting.
Been following Longo for several years now. He seemed to be very upset about the notion to call 16-48h without food "fasting". He seems to belive that's "time restricted eating", since actual fasting (5days+) seems to give tremendous body benefits. Yet 16h-22h doesn't seem to do that in such a manner at all. So maybe it's a way to stirr up that, hey IF isn't as great as people want you belive. Since it's not really fasting.
I did hang out for awhile in very dark forums online with very sick people, and usually people who fasted under 6days never seemed to benefit from anything. While almost everybody who went above 6 days(and some way longer), seemed to always get sth out of it.
But still, how he talks here is quite shady. Dodging stuff left and right
All his work is evidence based with meta studies. If you read his book he is very cautious and will not present anything without evidence as he says you rightly would loose credibility and all the years of research would be discarded.
According to 5000 yrs old ayurveda one should eat when sunrises and end at sunset so basically its 12 to 13 hrs and one should not drink too much water

Intermittent fasting is not for everybody. After hearing about IF back in 2017 I've tried it (14/10) for over 6 months. I am a breakfast eater but somehow it was very easy for me not to eat until 1 pm. In the beginning I felt great but after a while I've started facing digestion problems and my digestion before was always perfect ....like a Swiss watch. Then I've suffered a hormonal imbalance. Trying to understand what the issue was, I've stopped IF. My digestion was working properly again, my hormones balanced but I've gained weight without changing anything to my diet. And I was never have problems with gaining weight. It was that 1.5 to 2 kg that I couldn't lose. So if you are a healthy, slim, young woman with a fast metabolism like mine BE AWARE. Now a day I eat within a 10-hour window. I have breakfast at 8am and an early dinner at 6pm and feeling great. I've also incorporated FMD (twice a year) in my life. But my metabolism is still slower now than it was before IF. Dr. Longo is one of few scientist that I admire the most (together with Dr. Satchin Panda, Dr. Andrew Weil, Dr. Guido Kroemer and Dr. William Li).

I think that yes, 16/8 could be fine, if you eat early. Say you have breakfast at 8, that means your last meal would be 4 in the afternoon. Or you could enlarge your eating window just a bit to 14/10: breakfast at 8, dinner at 6 in the afternoon. That's still time restrictive eating - and it makes more use of knowledge of what the body does with food at different times of the day. Calories late in the day, goes straight to the fat stores. Calories in the morning get used for activity.

Why is it so confusing when people want to be healthier and have been baffled by two or more scientists saying different types of things all together. I started eating twice a day breakfast and dinner, and after 7 pm, I don't eat anything. I do resistant training, so I need that protein and energy . I have my first meal around 11am and then 5pm . Later I go to the gym for 1.5 hours and feel great .
What about autophagy with fasting and extended fasting? What about the dawn effect and why the human body does this?
Sugar is highly addictive and ultimately poison in the amounts we injest it in our modern diets. Not to mention that as humans, we didn't get to where we are today, biologically, by having sugar everyday. Leaving this important aspect of it out of the equation negates his "advice" on having 5 grams a day being harmless.

By law, according to the USDA, the egg industry “needs to steer clear of words like 'healthy' or 'nutritious. '” For a food to be labeled “healthy” under FDA rules, it has to be low in saturated fat (eggs fail that criteria) and have less than 90mg of cholesterol per serving (even half an egg fails that test).

Interesting when Dr Longo talks about the yo-yo effect of diet at 28:00 being worse than not having done anything at all. Yet ,earlier in the video talks about the summer effect where in a prehistoric time we would have eaten a lot to accumulate fat then to lose the same fat when there was scarcity but in our modern society we no longer have this opportunity. Can anyone explain then the logic?

341 are in favor, 250 neutral and 409 against breakfast.
You take the 341 who are in favor of breakfast!
Then you write an article: A meta study of 341 studies shows that breakfast is beneficial!
2. By active choosing the participants for a study you can influence very much the study!
F.e. you admit only people who like breakfast and have no health issues.
You admit only people who do not like breakfast and have health issues.
You admit a mix of them.
.....Many more possibilities!

Gold standard, anecdotal, blind, double cross, time of wash out, placebo group .....

How many calories does Dr Longo recommend per day ? In his book the Longevity Diet is 800 calories per day, but the FMDiet meal for day one is 1,100 calories ( I believe ) ~ anyway that’s confusing. So when you’re not fasting ( or mimicking ) how many calories does he recommend per day ?
I ask because he says chronic calorie reduction is unhealthy, and the US government recommends 2K calories per day. So 800 calories per day might be chronic under eating ? I’m not trying to be argumentative but need clarification on this. Ty
I did just find an article on NIH MedPub that said one blue zone group of centurions ate 1,100 calories per day.
Wrong. The FMD is on the First day 1100 cal. and then from day 2 to 5- 800 cal. In his book he recommends on a normaly diet (longevity diet) 1,700 to 1,800 cal. a day for a sedentary woman of normal height (5,4 inches).

What he's saying is that if you're going to skip a meal as many people who do intermittent fasting do, it's more beneficial to skip the evening meal instead of the morning meal. He is weird ..we can't calculate everything in life with his studies.
I know my mother never ate breakfast..she used work in yard cooking ..type of activity through after noon then have lunch ..in India .. people used to do weekly religious fastings ..she is always skinny no over weight..i do fasting now ..I eat couple meals in the evening and I feel good ..I do workout before eating..but moderate workout..and some low intensity runs sometime ...I think. For sure i can say eating breakfast slows me down ..and makes me lazy ..I feel lot better without it .
For him to say that skipping breakfast breakfast and fasting longer than 12 hours is the cause higher mortality and all these chronic illnesses is ridiculous. It’s a biased view based on his observations and whatever these “epidemiological studies” he believes are valid. Also, he doesn’t seem to think quality or content of food matters. Calling people and asking if they have breakfast or not and then what-following their longevity or health issues? It’s very unclear. How is that scientific? It’s like a marketing survey. Personally, I’m not for or against breakfast. In an ideal situation, it may be best to have mid morning meal, then a late afternoon/early evening meal, skip a late dinner or have a light dinner. But I personally do not eat more on days I may not eat that much earlier in the day. In fact, once I get started, I tend to eat more throughout the day. Curious to see his data…he just throws these numbers out of a hat.
His concern about no breakfast is the amount of bile floating around in the gut with no fat to digest. Bile is like battery acid. It's strong and causes damage to the gut that then increases the risk of colon cancer.
This is why high fat diets and alcohol are risky for colon cancer. Alcohol digests as a fat and increases bile.
He's seen metastudies prove this over and over. I don't eat breakfast right away either. I eat 2.5hrs after waking. I am not hungry prior and just can't. I'm hoping it's close enough.

what about celery juice for breakfast? I take my vitamins with this food. Also, can be lowering temperature of environment to, say 73-75 degree, make impact of fasting more pronouncing?
People associate breakfast with the morning. I hate the idea of waking up in the morning just to eat breakfast only to go back to bed. For me, a normal time of day for breakfast would be around noon time. And then people call it lunch. So by most people's standards I skip breakfast everyday. But I am breaking the fast which is the definition of breakfast. And what is normal breakfast food traditionally, is full of sugar which I avoid totally.

I’m done. Everytime I watch a video on this channel someone has studies to back up something completely different than the “expert” in the last video. All I keep doing is cutting foods out then later re-adding it or buying “superfoods” and none of this is actually getting me anywhere. I think I’ll stick to plants and omega 3’s and stop taking advice from people who don’t have it figured out yet :/
I've done his FMD but I find it weird that anyone should talk about it as a ketogenic diet never of the large amount of carbs in it. There rice flour in the soups! The nut bar is super sweet.

So, I take it, he still thinks fasting is good. But, thinks if u skip a meal, maybe u shouldn't skip breakfast, that is assuming that u aren't eating high carb sugary processed foods for breakfast
20-30 g of nuts rotate the type. (This is a tiny amount ppl weigh it until you know how much is optimal)
The use of mainly fats with less carbs and protein, I assume balanced in some ratio, to mimic fasting state, might work. I'd like to hear from more people who have tried it.
I have tried this a couple of times. Maybe the sudden keto state might stress people a bit because with a high fat mimicking diet one gets into deep ketosis. 5mml but when has the Longo fat mimicking diet, it is slightly more carbs after day one, Keto level hovers around 1.5mml and sometimes not at all, but feeling of stress I found to be less on Longos method
Dr. Longo has a conscience and wants to help people. Pharma doesn't have that filter. All he has to do is look at the experts in virology and listen to what they're discovering regarding the vaccine. I hope that the longevity diet and FMD can mitigate the damage. 15% above normal all cause mortality is huge...

This is so frustrating! Lots of current centenarians did NOT have healthy lifestyles. It seems the primary positive lifestyle effect they experience is never getting significantly overweight, always exercising, always staying engaged with life and having a strong social structure. Even in blue zones the VAST majority of people do not live to be over 90. Why don’t they? They pretty much eat the same diets. We need more information. I’m not convinced that skipping breakfast which is the easiest way to reduce meal frequency, is a dangerous lifestyle choice. Other than the fact that a few centenarians eat breakfast, where is the human data? Scientists are missing something. They are exaggerating the blue zone effect when most people in blue zones don’t live to be 100.

BUT ! At no time did they even MENTION the microbiome, the single most important feature of human health...in relation to fasting, i would say, like walter, need more research, microbes can go into hibernation during times of no food, but ! they live in the intestine where they are at risk of getting pooped out if they start napping ? this is just me being layman and using logic, i have zero science to back this up, BUT microbiome needs attention,thats why i consider breakfast : FOOD FOR MICROBES ! feed the good guys in there, you dont need a meal, you need pektin (eat some applepeels) inulin (cheap supplementusually from chikory root), OMG i will drop the bomb : lactose ! Lactose is the favorite food of sooooo many beneficial microbes, eat some skyr if you fear fat from animals, its like 0.1% fat. So, breakfast for me is skyr, applepeels and a scoop of inulin "sweetened" with cinamon, blend it and gulp it down, yum !!! akkermansia and the entire bifido-family will send you greetings :p ...

One big plant-based meal per day; ideally around 3-5 pm.

I keep coming back to this interview. In a healthy person fasting glucose should not drop too low as fat will be metabolised maintain the levels within the correct parameters. I’ll stick with Jason Fung.
