Hello to all the viewers of this (again) great video of Chris: please note that when you bolt the body panel back on, it needs some alignment. Please make sure that it doesn't get damaged when opening the door.

Its VERY important to install the red positive cable first when reinstalling and last when removing. Lessens the chance of an explosion from the battery. It happens and its not a pretty feeling.
Keep up the great vids Chris and Happy New Years!

When I'm hooking up booster cables or a charger I always put the black one on first and take the black one off last

Very nice video! The battery side terminal bolt is actually designed to be used with a 5/16" wrench, which of course is close to 8 mm. Special ratcheting wrenches with an insulated handle for use with side terminals are available (only $3 at Harbor Freight). To more easily access the bottom bolt of the body panel, the service manual recommends loosening the rocker panel below it by removing two screws near it. Then you are less likely to chip the paint with the wrench.

Thank you. It's good to know that some people still speak SAE 13mm is 1/2". 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, and 1/2" is all you need on most classic American cars.

Best video ever for new C4 owners. Also show how to take the roof off. These are things I wish ,y dad had shown me before he passed (I have his 96 now as my secondary car...and his 76 as my third vehicle).
I luckily was able to learn about the battery from the corvette Ben when he had an 85 video series, and the top was much harder to find out.
    Great videos, keep it going!

My side panel isn't notched out! I had to take the bolt all the way out after trying for a hour. I'm thinking of cutting the hole out like most others are so next time will be easy. 1984 c4.

Funny that people criticise certain engineering decisions. A lot goes on when designing a car, specially from scratch like the C4 was. Things change and adapt as the car “evolves” and then comes a new generation

Your tip about the necessary tools for removing the battery was great. I’d like to see a short video regarding what other tools would be necessary for doing basic side of the road stuff. No room in a C4 so I know it can’t be much! Ie. adjustable wrench, 7 and 10 mm wrench/socket etc.

  • @thomaschadwick4699

Much easier to use a 1/8 allen wrench instead of the T-30 when the wheels are still on the car.

I replaced the battery in my 86 by removing the cruse control unit and it's bracket and lifting it out the top. fewer bolts and didn't have to take the fender panel off.

That top bolt for the side panel that you remove in order to get to the battery is why I bought a 10mm ratcheting wrench. Which actually has come in useful for other 10mm bolts on the car.

The former owner of my ‘87 put a stock battery in it with the terminals on top. It’s got adaptors on the cables. Where I live OEM type batteries are way more expensive.

Happy New Year ! Just a quick tip , if you did remove that bottom panel bolt to get it back in you need to drop the rocker panel for access to reinstall it . Not to big a deal .

Wow. Great video. I would have thought the battery would come out after the backside of the fender well was removed. Interesting. The GM engineer that design the bottom with that screw should be sent back to school. Had tonchange my c7(2017) battery a few weeks ago & I thought the removal from the hatch was tuff!! I did replace the standard battery with an AGM (duracel - yes they make coppertop batteries for cars too). More cold cranking amps, don't have to work about spills as it is a sealed battery + it comes with a 4yr free replacement). Happy new year to all !!! Here's a thought, someone should make a aftermarket tray that slides out to remove the battery🤔

Hi guys - any idea what the piece is called that the battery bracket bolt screws down into? When I put my bolt into hole it doesn't screw down. Like a nut is missing but I'm not sure what part that is to search for. Anyone know? Thanks!

  • @smokinC5

Gm engineering smh. I know this is a c4 video, but you c5 guys need to change your battery if it a lead acid battery with a red top or like it. The main computer sits under the battery and if it leaks you are in for one hell of an expensive problem. Happy new year chris!!

C4 Targa top removal requires a ratchet anyway, so having a few spare sockets stashed in the car isn't a big deal. (Not that I recommend driving the C4 with the top removed, it shakes like a bowl of Jello when you do.)

I have an '88 C4. Had it since '89. I've replaced several batteries. Your procedure is good...but I don't mess with that bottom bolt. The panel will bend outward far enough for the battery to slide out and then back in.

DO NOT REPLACE THE BATTERY WITH A OPTIMA BATTERY THAT HAS BOTH TOP AND SIDE POST !!! There is a brace that will hit the positive post and burn the car . Optima will tell you it works well it doesn’t .

It’s like Mr. Rogers works on cars you’re a bit late to the party with this one. I don’t mean to be too critical but I do believe you set out to buy a C4 but not a garage queen and that is exactly what you bought this car needs absolutely nothing I don’t know what do you expect to teach anybody that we haven’t already learned by the thousand other videos on RUclips
