The Subject-
Like ‘Hind’ and ‘Hindu,’ ‘Barahman’ (Brāhmaņa) is also a celebrated term in Persian literature. Beginning from Firdausi the Persian poets have used ‘Barahman’ to represent a wise person who is always in the quest of knowledge. Hafiz invokes the wisdom of ‘Barhaman’ along with the Ideas of ‘Hakim’ to save the world from destruction. In classical Persian poetry this term has been used to bear multifaceted poetic nuances. There, it mostly represents a lover par excellence, having piety of love and integrity with his beloved. In a limited sense, though it means a specific group in India, in a broader sense it stands for all Hindus and sometimes Indians as a whole. The following verse of a Persian poet of Shahjahan’s court Chandrabhan ‘Barhman’ encapsules many hues of this term-
برهمنی که دلم را بسوخت می گوید
برو برو ز تو بوی کباب می آید
(The Brahmin who burnt my heart, says- "Go away from here, you are smelling like Kabab!")

Dr. Farzaneh Azam Lotfi (Ph.D. in Urdu Language, Literature and Culture, Jawaharlal Nehru University) is Associate Professor and Faculty Member of the Department of Ancient Culture and Languages, University of Tehran and Head of Asia Research Center, University of Tehran. She is an Indologist, specializing in comparative study of Iran and India in the fields of art, philosophy, religions, mythology, language and literature. Dr. Lotfi has published more than 30 articles in Persian, Urdu and English languages, in national and international journals. She has also authored 8 books in the field of Indian studies.
