Your community is lucky to have you Eric, you’re a good mechanic and a great person!
I appreciate that!
I agree their lucky to have you. Your labor rate is great compared to what they charge In my area, which is well over $100 hr. My mechanic is also very good and a very good friend of mine and his labor rate is very good also. You do a fabulous job.@@SouthMainAuto
I second that
For me as long as I being watching SMA anything being fixed on a vehicle at sma will be saving you money!
Stevie Wonder can see that 😄
Nice job as always 👍
You are a hell of a mechanic. I love your videos. I worked at a dealership many years ago and things have really changed. Even when I worked at that dealership I had a self employed mechanic work on my cars. I never take anything to a dealership unless it’s warranty work.
Now you should have a video showing your shop expenses for an average six month period. That would shock some people that think everything is “too expensive” . Great content as always!
I assume it takes about $100 per hour to cover all that. But, how the dealerships justify their exorbitant charges is beyond me!
@@0rnery Most dealerships I have been into have all sorts of extra employees and a grander looking place than most brick-n-mortar or mom-n-pop type repair facility. All those extra people and amenities cost money and you, me, the customer pays for it. The taxes and mortgage or rent on the property is all paid for by the customer. There is not much magic or mystery to it if you have ever run something as simple as a lemonade stand at the end of your driveway or girl scout cookies or whatever. One might think that more people should understand this... (Business and Marketing have been the top college major in the USA for decades) but they don't or they forgot.
@@utidjian Hah! It would be one thing if the exotic Dealership experience yielded competent diagnosis & repairs. But, we see all too often, mom & pop shops get the job done correctly after Dealership fails, despite having specific tools and knowledge of how to repair their own products. And, they get it done for a fraction of the Dealership's price.
Dealerships ought to be paying for their exorbitant overhead with car sales, not when their customers are between a rock and a hard place at the mercy of their shop.
Dude you can't get more honest than showing everyone your estimates. Totally reasonable price too, I think she would struggle to find another automotive shop cheaper than that.
Worked as a mechanic for 30+ years and i'd be happy to pay you to work on my vehicles anytime.
Remember skilled work isn't cheap and cheap work isn't skilled 😏
Great motto
Many people know the price of everything and the cost of nothing.
Ditto! 👍👍
Anyone mad at that estimate is a dum dum cause that is cheap and his shop needs to make money to stay open. I know some places it would of been 1 hour diag each concern for diag easy or not and can't blame those places either as they all need to be profitable to stay in business. Running a shop is far from cheap and easy. And we all know the government likes there chunk of anything made. Very reasonable SMA
You, my friend, are what all mechanics should strive to be.
Thanks for showing the estimate. Now, my wife has a better idea of the value of the DIY repairs I perform. And, many of those are made possible by channels like like yours. Back in the day, I had to struggle along with Chilton, "Motor" and $150 service manuals. As complicated as new cars are, your videos are a godsend! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
>>> "Now, my wife has a better idea of the value of the DIY repairs I perform." Heck yes to this! Me too! There is a saying: A man's value isn't known till he is gone.
Lucky you, I need to replace all 4 shocks because they are leaking and tie rods because rubber is gone. "Does it really need to be done?"
Lucky you, I need to replace all 4 shocks because they are leaking and tie rods because rubber is gone. "Does it really need to be done?"
Yes, to save extra wear on tires apart from a better ride.
If you apply the logic you see in SMA videos to all repairs then all you need is a factory manual, forget Haynes and Chilton.
Mrs O has a wonderfully delightful face. Delightful to see her assist.
Great price sounds like a honest reasonable mechanic.
Eric, You were very thorough in your investigation into her complaints and I understand that you need to get paid for your time because once you give her your estimate she may let her brother do the work.... I also think your estimate for the repairs was very inline with what it would cost in most areas of the country (unless her brother is doing the fixin, then it might cost her more in the long run). Keep up the good work there at SMA...
Was the "loud exhaust" actually not -be- a bad muffler or bad wheel bearing, BUT the almost extinct "Muffler Bearing"?
You should really consider proof reading your comments before actually posting them.
You do realize that muffler bearings are real, right?

Here are your problems Lady and I will fix them. Honest and to the Point. You da man! Great Job! Thank You for another great Video!😊
I’ve always worked on my own cars. Watching Eric has helped me hone my skills quite a bit.
Glad to finally see a SMA repair bill detailing parts & labor. I know automotive tools & equipment are very expensive, so if they want a honest tech like you to stay in business they better just pay up. YOU ARE WORTH EVERY PENNY!
That suction cup removal of the taillight was genius. I'm gonna have to start doing that since some taillights can be a real bear to remove.
I was pissed off at first because I am changing my leaky water heater, so I watched your video, which was very satisfying, which ofc made me very happy. Thanks, Mr&Mrs O. Best get back to water heater.
When I was first in business fixing RVs and mobile homes, I had a lot of people asking me to justify my hourly rate.
They didn't want to hear that they were paying for experience or that I have bills to pay or that I'm in business to make a profit.
Eventually, I just told them that if they didn't like it, that they didn't have to have me work on their units and they were free to look for someone else to do the job.
After that, I never heard anything more about justifying costs!
Apparently, there wasn't anyone else competent enough to do that kind of work.
I've never justified my price. If someone started giving me grief over a price I just sent them down the road. Those types are always more trouble than they are worth.
My responce used to be (retired, thank God!) "What do you do for a living, and do you negotiate your prices?"
That usually shut them up.
Similar story for me. Several decades ago I was in a hospital break room and saw an invoice laying out for some work they just had done on a Xerox copier. I was surprised to notice they were charged a higher hourly rate for copier service than my company charged for me to work on their MRI !
I think the problem is people equate the rate to an hourly wage - and it's way more then they are making. They don't think of it as paying the shop. (Rent, light, heat, Mrs. O, general business expenses, etc.)
Very true! We usually inform people that we don't compete on price, we fix the work done by those that do though.
I have always preferred DIY. You are helping us all out Mr. O.
Thumbs up on your estimate, Eric. That is certainly a fair price. I hope I'm wrong but I felt a 'red flag' going up when I saw that fuse laying as it was. I don't want to point a bad finger at a previous repair shop either. I just hope someone wasn't trying to take advantage of this lady.
I'd say the dealership certainly was.....
The previous shop probably already determined it needed a new fuse. But if they left the new one in then it would have been fixed for free.
The first thing I thought was does the horn go off in the middle of the night?
I think many people underestimate the time a proper diagnosis takes, the expertise is what you are paying for. Anyone can write up a BS estimate that doesn't address the actual problems, or "Parts-Cannon" the customer with things they don't actually need. In fact that wheel bearing - most shops would have said "you need all four wheels done" and not bother with quoting just the one that is the problem.
Good honest mechanic, great vid Eric as always!
I was in a Ford dealership some years ago and i overheard two technicians conversing. One told the other the window switch did not work. But tech could replicate the problem. Response, change the switch and charge the customer. These folks give your industry a bad name and has led to my distrust of almost all mechanics or better yet, parts changers. Glad you're not in either of those categories. Keep up the great work and thanks for watching, sorry. I meant thanks for showing
For some of that stuff I wonder if it's a local reporter is checking garage integrity. Other shops may have said "You need an expensive clockspring to fix the horn. The no-start is because you need a new starter. ..." SMAR legit diagnosed the problems as a fuse and fob, ODM, turn signal bearing etc.BTW, what happened to Mrs. O's face? :)
Don’t forget blinker fluid that they told her she needed 😂 I honestly think it’s a dealer as Eric mentioned she was taking it to. It’s the good old dealer scam where they keep her coming back for more money trick. They fix one thing and sabotage something else to fail for continued customer return for more business/ money. There is a lot of mechanics out there that do this to women mostly and a little bit to men who have no mechanical knowledge. Sad but so true on this one with women.
Eric, you the guy! Fix everything and save the gal a bundle! Best outcome that can happen!
Hey, if you're happy and the customer is happy, well then... I'm ecstatically HAPPY!!!😃😃😃
Amazing job Eric! 👍👍
Me too
Two hrs of my door rate is more than your labor on the invoice😂. Your community is lucky to have you and your business.
Sounds like that customer was happy even before you started the repair. Who thought you can make someone laugh with an estimate like that. You did well Mr. O!
If I ever called my wife “ old girl” you would read about it in the news, and please if you wouldn’t mind pray for my eternal soul ! Lol you caught a bolt of lightning with this gal Mr. O !
People would be so lucky to have you as their mechanic and I wish I had an SMA in my neck of the woods because I would be a customer for life.
We get this same crap happening in Australia & the poor honest mechanic has to cop all the backlash. So Eric there is plenty of honest mechanics like you out there, very rare also!
Excellent video as always!! I just wish SMA was in Louisiana, I would be a customer for life! You are the best, hands down!
Hey Eric
Long time viewer here from England and this is one of my favourite so far as not only does it show off your excellence in well thought through diagnostic....
But it shows the other side of what most customers only see..... the invoice...
Absolutely nothing wrong with any of your prices or rates etc.
Love the clearness of the invoice.
Sod the haters in the comments, those People forget that you can source stuff cheap on the internet, but they forget you'll be waiting for it to arrive and that vehicle will be taking up space and time. And if it's wrong you'll be waiting again for the correct part.
Your local supplier may be dearer but the customer service they offer you is what you're paying for.
Keep the video's coming and a few more estimates or invoices please.
Kind regards
Chesh
Thanks for showing us the repair estimate. My wife is now a little more understanding when I "need" to buy a new tool to do our vehicle repairs and upkeep.
Another point of possible interest to you: The 2014 Subaru I used to own would set off the passenger seat belt warning if my cell phone, (ONLY when I had it plugged in and charging), was laying in the right spot on the seat. (Evidently near the sensor.) There was nothing else on the seat. I hope maybe this helps you sometime. Crazy huh?
This happens to my son’s 2020 VW Tiguan. He keeps the seat belt buckled on the passenger seat when driving with his cell phone on the seat.
I appreciate your openness and think with your skillset to be charging what you do is a bargain. I'd rather have you work on my car than any dealer even if you were more expensive
Excellent upload! I'm always impressed with your methodical and patient diagnostic work. 🧐
The way you narrate as you go through the process really drives home the massive amount of experience and knowledge you have. This can only come through years of hands-on work combined with constant study and research of the ever-changing operations of modern automotive systems.
There is no shortcut to this level of service. It takes 10's of thousands of hours of your life...
And what is your time worth? It is TRULY our most valuable and precious commodity, as we have an ever-dwindling amount of it and it cannot be replaced once it is spent. NO ONE has the right to ask you to JUSTIFY your price for your time. If they do, then they have determined that your time has no value unless it can be 'justified '. That's arrogance and ignorance of the highest degree. I don't work for, or do work for, those kind of people anymore. My life and work has been the better for it ever since. 🙂
My motto:
"This is the 'price' (estimate) I have put on my time. You are free to take it or leave it, but I will not 'give' you anymore of it explaining why."
Thank you again for sharing. 🙏
The nickel part is fine when you do it yourself, because you can replace it again later when it fails. When it is your livelihood, the time involved doing it again free of charge under warranty isn't worth it.
I got a parts cannon break. For some reason the parts catalogs got changed, and the listed part no longer fits. With no replacement, I had to find the actual problem. 😊
I know back in 2009 the right part was in the books since I had to buy the relay back then, and it fit. It was the same symptom, but was the fan connector, not the relay this time.
That’s the great thing about this channel, not just great content but the up front and honest work that’s done. You’re a good man Mr. O! ( and a lucky man to have Mrs. O! ). Thanks for another great video! 👍🏻👍🏻

Amazingly GM still puts modules directly expose to salt puke.
To be fair this is about a 15 to 20 yr old car at this point

Electronics can be packaged to be completely impervious to water. GM just doesn't care to do that because then they can charge you almost $600 for parts alone. Look at the fuel pump modules on the GM trucks that Eric has routinely shown us. It's clearly a choice to do these things.
I’m mobile locksmith and I charged 150 whenever I have to program something with GM sps. I’m glad my prices aren’t that far off
I think it is a set up car by some agency to check you abilities and integrity for car repairs. No doubt they will find that YOU pass with flying colors. great job
my first thought.
Then they wouldn't have had him fix the car if it was.
Which kinds of agencies perform these checkups? Sounds like useful info
Here in the UK the DVSA has been known to use a “mystery shopper” car that has known defects and present it to an MOT testing station for an MOT test/inspection to see if they are honest and actually know the pass/fail criteria of the MOT test
State of California Bureau of Automotive Repair will send out undercover cars to the SMOG test stations to test the abilities of the SMOG technicians.
another great video, also did like the cost breakdown as well,, wish you where more local to my area,we have some real ding dongs here in alabamaaaaaa
Thank you for showing the estimate. Being a 1 man shop, the hardest thing I do is estimates. I would happily pay for a coaching group with you just sharing your estimates sometimes!
I am surprised at your labor rates and really appreciate you sharing that too. We havent seen labor rates that low for probably 10 years here in Atlanta.
Thanks for the video Mr.&Mrs. O. Always look forward to them.
The honk can be turned on and off when you lock the doors.I always turned mine off because I find it absolutely ridiculous that people are honking their horns every damn time they lock and unlock their doors!....Imagine this woman is COMPLAINING that she cant wake up the neighborhood when she unlocks her car....How awful!...You can hear it lock and unlock...you dont need to tell everyone within a quarter mile you are locking and unlocking your doors!.
When you find a good mechanic, you learn to just be happy with the estimate because you know that quality work is being done! I do almost all my own repairs, but I also have a good garage in mind when something comes up that I'm not smart enough to deal with, and they've learned that I generally don't even blink at their estimates now - I just smile and ask when they think they might have it ready for me to pick back up.
Thanks for another great video Mr & Mrs O. Not too difficult to win the job when the dealer is twice the price for half the work. Thanks for being honest and trustworthy, there are not enough people in the world like both of you.
a wasp sting on the backside of your hand will puff it up so it doesn't leave marks when you punch her.
Reasonable charge and that is because you know how to troubleshoot and fix the issues
Eric I ran across something a few months ago I had never saw, I'm a full auto tech in a manufacturing plant so if I get it in my bays it was never good to begin with. Ac wasnt cooling on an acadia, checked all the fuse and relay was blowing but compressor wasnt kicking on ohmed all the wiring from the compressor back to the fuse box and climate control mod and found nothing. As I was looking at the dic the temp outside was showing -34 degrees and I thought that was strange because I'm inside a plant so got out the trusty MDI and a laptop to check codes found nothing, went into ambient air temp sensor and it had a recalibrate function so recalibrated it and wallahh, didnt know if you had saw that before in the field but I hadnt in the plant. It thought it was too cold to kick the compressor on, wierd man. but getting parts is pretty easy for me, usually have plenty of them and the cars are clean and that makes thing alot easier too, good vids man I watch them all the time, keep up the good work.

Pulled fuse so it doesn’t honk when using remote start, or when he locks it after coming back home.
A customer can always say no to an estimate and go to another shop, which is apparently what this customer did after getting the dealer's estimate. Eric's labor prices seem fair, he uses quality parts because he has to back them if they fail. He's upfront about diagnostic costs. I would love to have such an honest and fair mechanic to rely on.

A really good video, thoroughly enjoyed the invoice portion. Puts everything in perspective. One question though, do you live and die by the Labor Guide ? I know it is all about the money, that’s why we work, but you have always struck me as a person that uses the guide as just that a guide. Modifying as you see fit.
It's very interesting to me to see the costs associated with this kind of diagnosis and repair. Thanks for sharing that info! The ''missing' fuse did seem a bit like a setup at first, but it all made more sense when it was disclosed that she'd had the thing at the dealer before bringing it to you. No doubt the previous diagnostician removed the horn fuse in order to test the security system and simply forgot to reinstall it. It would be very interesting to see a written quote from the dealer!
Lookin' forward to Part Ii!
only thing I liked about a dealer repair is they left the temp sensor box under the hood, so at least I know they changed it. The job was free, they did it while I was buying a car, and thought I was trading it in. LOL

I bought a new one of these when they first came out, Tiger Woods drove the same brown Enclave as me. Should have known as a technician not to buy first year models. This thing fell apart in my hands over the course of a year. It was in the Buick shop seven times. My salesman encouraged me to seek lemon law protection. I patiently let them fix it and then traded it in for a GMC truck (didn't want them to pass the problem to someone unsuspecting). It was better but now I am firmly a Toyota and Lexus only fan.
What makes you think it wasn't out on the lot straight after you traded it?

mrs o isnt a disgrace
She's all dolled up here today. I caught a side mirror peek 😊
I worked at a car dealership back in 1972. When estimates were given to customers that were so ridiculously high, it was referred to as a "don't want tax". That means the dealer service did not want the job. Usually, this was because it was too much of a pain in the ass and took too long to do. They preferred jobs that were relatively easy and quick to perform so they could get them done quickly yet charge the full book cost. A good example was something like a heater core replacement. These jobs were always "don't want". Another tactic, if the customer still wanted the work performed was the "sunshine treatment". That was when the car would be left outside in the back for weeks telling the customer some part wasn't available. Either the customer would take the car somewhere else or eventually, they would fix it at an exorbitant price. Not saying they still do this but it was SOP back then at that dealer. If you needed brakes, an alternator or radiator something like that, no problem. If it was much more involved? "Don't want tax".
On the key fob, I've found that usually it's crud/carbon buildup on the connector pad under the conductive rubber of the button. Popping it open and cleaning the contact surface with a Q tip and isopropyl alcohol takes about 5 minutes and almost always fixes the issue.
Did Sweet Project Cars teach you that? 🤔
@@jimh.412 Probably not since I've been doing it since the 1980s and I don't know that channel.
@@John_Ridley So you say? Keyfobs didn't come out until late 80's early 90's.🥱

I'm a person who has mostly owned old cars and fixed stuff myself, so 1300 bucks for such small problems seems insane to me. But in the context of a pretty new car and comparing to dealer prices while using OEM parts, your estimate seems extremely fair. I always get the cheapest parts and usually it's fine, but sometimes it's not, it's my own cars. As a mechanic it makes the most sense to use known good parts.
Carquest premium, wagner & duralast gold stuff is fairly priced & good quality. Dorman is questionable depending on the part.
I lost my shop during coof. Watching this and back seat driving while you repair stuff makes me REALLY feel the need to get back in the game
That's the Devil whispering in your ear! I love working on cars except when I'm actually working on them... and the cars get tougher to work on every year. Was kind of weird about the whole fuse thing. Thanks for the vid again.
Honda dealership told my wife the "passenger airbag disabled" light was because the car thought her purse on the passenger seat was a small child - it's a safety feature, not a problem. She asked if they were sure? They were. Was the light on when they looked at it just now? It was. Where's my purse? (crickets) She didn't even have her purse with her - in the passenger seat or otherwise - and there was nothing at all in the passenger seat.
Great video. Loved your notes on the estimate. I have always wondered what the 'money variable' is on a lot of the work you do. Another item people should keep in mind re price on parts and labor is that you are giving customer a guarantee on the parts and the great work you do for the repair. I have commented before, and will say it again. I really wish you worked near where I live (Oregon). I would use you for all my repairs. Oh and Oregon does not have a rust and salt issue with their cars. My 2000 Sienna is still running great, without any rust issues! Have a good day. Thanks for posting.
